We’ve gone for the NIPT which is a blood test. It’s £250 and is more accurate that the combined screening they do with nucleal fold thickness and bloods and age. I’m getting it done at 11+2. It analyses the placental tissue in your blood stream so it’s pretty accurate. With my son I was 1 in 21 from NHS screening and from then I got the NIPT test. Had I known about it before I’d have gone straight for that.

Trousersareoverrated · 20/10/2020 11:35

Did you get the NIPT test on the NHS when you got the 1 in 21 bloomety?

Totally agree it’s entirely up to everyone to do what’s best for them.

bloomety · 20/10/2020 12:14

No, they don't do it on the NHS, only the test where they sample the amniotic fluid, which has a small risk of miscarriage, so I opted for the blood test.

Trousersareoverrated · 20/10/2020 12:32

Ah ok. Yes that’s why I’ve declined the testing - because I wouldn’t go for the further tests that carry a miscarriage risk so I would rather not have the stress of knowing I was a higher risk for no reason. I didn’t know about this NIPT though - certainly something to consider.

bloomety · 20/10/2020 13:11

No I wouldn't go for it either, no matter how small the risk. Yes just google NIPT testing. I'm going to a private ward St James in Leeds which is probably why its a lot cheaper than most of the private places that do them. The one they do is the Iona test.

bloomety · 20/10/2020 13:31

I'm feeling really worried. I carried some heavy shopping from the supermarket to my car. I thought the only risk was to my ligaments and bones because they're looser in pregnancy, but now I have googled it, there's an increased risk of MC carrying heavy things Sad

Trousersareoverrated · 20/10/2020 21:47

Please don’t worry bloomety. The risk is tiny. I’ve never stopped myself carrying anything heavy (I moved house when pregnant last time) and I’m constantly lugging my 2.5 year old around.

Catisa · 21/10/2020 03:59

@bloomety Just monitor how you feel in the next days, surely if you feel ok there is no reason to worry. I guess the advice is there not to do it regularly or not to do things that you were not doing before being pregnant. I think many times the trick is there, if you were doing that before, your body is kind of used to it, it doesn't represent any sort of challenge. It's like with exercise, you can go running etc if you were doing it before. This is my opinion.
I read what you all say regarding the NIPT, it's a really good point, we are considering it. We'll probably take a decision once we get the results of the 12w scan, see what level of risk we have etc.
How is the week going for all of you? As you can see on my side a bit of insomnia Smile

lucymagoo · 21/10/2020 08:11

I'm having a truly awful time this week. Last week I was starting to feel better and thought I was past the worst of it and then yesterday was my worst yet. It feels like the worst hangover I've ever had x10 😭

Catisa · 21/10/2020 08:32

@lucymagoo oh i am so sorry to hear that! Hold on!

bloomety · 21/10/2020 08:52

Thanks everyone. My recurrent miscarriage consultant rang me on Monday and asked if I wanted a scan on Thursday. Music to my ears! I’ve graduated to the antenatal department now instead of the EPU. That will settle my mind. It’s at 8:45 tomorrow morning.

@Catisa yes I did used to do that before so you’re right. It’s not new.

@Trousersareoverrated I have a 2.5 year old too. Tiring isn’t it?!

Oh no @lucymagoo. What are you at now? I’m 9+4 and I’m not feeling as sick as I was.

lucymagoo · 21/10/2020 10:30

Oh good luck @bloomety! I'm 9+3 from LMP but my early scan dated me further, which adds up with my short cycles/positive digi test at 8dpo. So I'm more around the 10 week mark. Hoping it goes soon I started a new job the week before I found out so I am not making the best first impression

mouldygrapes · 21/10/2020 11:34

Bless you @lucymagoo, I’ve been feeling tentatively better for a couple of days so was hoping there was light at the end of the tunnel. I’m 9+5 today. Hopefully this is just a temporary flare for you and it gets better.

@bloomety - good luck with your scan tomorrow, exciting!

bloomety · 21/10/2020 15:55

@lucymagoo oh no! I was wanting to get a job, as I'm a SAHM Mum now, but I can't as now as I'd feel guilty because I know I'm pregnant. If I hadn't have known then it would be a different story. Have you told them yet?

Thanks @mouldygrapes. Im glad you are feeling better. I am too although weirdly I have gone off coffee. Thought of it makes me feel sick. I'm in starbucks with a tea. I never thought I'd do that!

lucymagoo · 21/10/2020 15:58

I just sent my boss an email @bloomety to explain why I've been MIA the past two days. He said congratulations and then said to catch up later this week. Hopefully all fine and understanding I made to sure include that I'm not up to my potential but hopefully will be in a few weeks

mouldygrapes · 21/10/2020 16:40

We’re nearly at the end of the first trimester - just a few weeks to go and hopefully we’ll all be feeling better!

@bloomety I’ve gone off coffee completely too, and tea! Used to drink so much of both.

Just had to get stroppy with the antenatal clinic to actually find out what TF is happening with my appointments. I’ve had no notifications at all; and only know I have them booked as I work in the same Trust and was able to check the system.
They’ve confirmed that booking will be by telephone and they’ll explain the rest of the appts then

bloomety · 21/10/2020 17:20

Have you not had your MW appointment yet @mouldygrapes?

Yes coffee is really making feel like I’m gonna puke.

lucymagoo · 21/10/2020 17:32

Same! I normally love coffee and can't even smell it currently

hereforallthehelp · 21/10/2020 17:44

I've been quite sick these past couple of weeks but haven't been sick since Friday so fingers crossed I'm on the other side now. Can't stand the thought of coffee! I'm 9 and a bit weeks - 2 to go until my NHS scan - eek!

RustyCat · 21/10/2020 17:49

Oh I am not envious of you guys going off coffee and tea. It'd break me if I did, I have cut back and I am having decaf tea or coffee but not had any aversions yet thankfully.

2 weeks today until my scan too woo! I honestly cannot wait!!

mouldygrapes · 21/10/2020 17:58

@bloomety no, booking is a week today. Apparently this hospital does them between 9 and 11 weeks but I know lots of you have had them earlier.
My scan will be at 12+5, they said they do those between 11 and 13+6

bloomety · 22/10/2020 11:50

Oh well not long to wait @mouldygrapes. I had mine at 8+6. My scan is at 11+3 but thats only because I needed it asap so I could get my NIPT. They wanted me to have the dating scan first.

Well the scan this morning was great. Little munchkin was floating about and kicking, we looked again and he's flipped upside down!

The Dr gave me a scare though saying it was 8+5. I said I'm 9+5, thats terrible! She said "oh no its just because I havent managed to measure the whole baby because of the way it's lying, and the scan isn't showing it all in one. I thought she'd have been better not measuring then! She then tried again a few minutes later and I was 9+4, which is a day behind what I was 2 weeks ago but from googling (I know!) apparently it's normal. She also could see the placenta forming which is on the side of my uterus. I'm pleased about that as with my son it was anterior(front) and meant I couldn't feel movements until much later on.

I've got my 12 week scan a week on Tuesday. I will relax a bit more then.

I've thought of getting a home doppler. I had one with my son and I found it really reassuring before I could feel movements.

RustyCat · 26/10/2020 08:32

I've had a wave of nerves hit be today. I have my 12wk scan a week on Wednesday. First scan of this pregnancy and I will be going on my own.

How's everyone else doing?

Bea11 · 26/10/2020 09:17

@RustyCat I completely understand your nerves. I've got my 12 week scan a week on Friday and it's my first scan of this pregnancy too. It's not clear yet whether partners are able to go or not as we've just moved up a tier and so I think it may be changing back to no partners as it was during lockdown.
I've had bad news before in scans with previous pregnancies and I honestly don't know if that is helping to prepare me or just making me more on edge!!
Will your partner be able to wait in the car for you, so at least you have someone nearby? I know it's not the same but it may help to know they're just outside.

CharlieD2020 · 26/10/2020 09:49

It's such a tricky time to be pregnant isn't it. Sorry your partner can't go to the scan @RustyCat. Hope your partner will be able to despite the rise in tier @Bea11

At the moment, DH can come to our scan, which is two weeks away on Wednesday. Cases are edging to Tier 2 status here too so hoping that doesn't change. Just so want the good news from a reassuring 12 week scan and then be able to share news more. Feels a secretive time
