How long has everyone got now until their mat leave kicks in?

Mine starts on the 26th (due 31st). I have a week annual leave before this but it's half term so I'll hardly be relaxing, more chasing my 4.5yr old around the park! Hmm

I really wish I had time to take a couple more days off to relax at home but I'm snowed under at work :(

watersintheclouds · 22/09/2020 12:54

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt I start mine on 9 October at 37+1. Using annual leave first as I’ve only used 1 week since lockdown started and then starting formal mat leave on my EDD.

Fingers crossed you get some rest before baby arrives.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 22/09/2020 13:09

No rest likely for me but hey ho, I'll just have to manage without it!

1990shopefulftm · 22/09/2020 13:29

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt I took annual leave for august then started my mat leave at the beginning of the month, I possibly might be handing my notice in at the end of my leave so didn't see the harm in starting in early.

FirstSurprise001 · 22/09/2020 13:40

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt that’s annoying that physio didn’t work for you! They mentioned they may be able to give me a bump band depending on what course of action they think is best so hopefully that will help!

It’s officially my last day of work today!! Taking annual leave and then maternity starts! Can’t wait to just sit in my pjs and nest for the next 4 weeks 🎉🥰

krissy12 · 22/09/2020 13:45

I have got a night dress from boohoo and baggy pyjamas that I have packed for the hospital and think I will just go up in leggings and a baggy jumper.

I've been off work since 28 weeks due to covid restrictions because I work in a hospital it has been amazing being off and being able to get everything sorted but now starting to get bored

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 22/09/2020 14:09

I think if it wasn't for the fact I'm still trying to recruit my mat leave cover, I'd be off! The whole process is taking far far longer than planned. I may not get chance to handover at this rate. I'm quite stressed!!

DressingGown87 · 22/09/2020 14:14

@FirstSurprise001 glad they have refered you. Hopefully you will get seen soon, and it helps.

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt I start mine on the 12th Oct, my induction is booked for the 13th. I wanted to start annual leave and take two weeks, or Atleast one beforehand. But my boss has just sent me another 6 major jobs to do, feel rough today too, and my movements are reduced. Do you have any annual leave to give you a couple of days?

OP posts:
Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 22/09/2020 14:20

@DressingGown87 it's like work only just realise that you're leaving soon isn't it so they just dump everything your way! It's so annoying.

Have you called your labour ward about your reduced movements? Best to get that checked out.

I'm trying really hard to move stuff around and work my arse off to try and get at least 1 day off - fingers crossed I can!

DressingGown87 · 22/09/2020 14:26

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt I know, it’s like We’ve only just turned round and said by the way I’m off for 11months 😂 when in reality they've known since March.

I’m going to give them a call this evening if it doesn’t pick up. I’ve been awake since 4am, just feel sick.

Fingers crossed you can juggle something around, and your boss realises he needs to give you a break. I’m luckily that I am WFH so can just do the work as and when I want, but annoying it’s on my desk.

Sls668 · 22/09/2020 14:49

@DressingGown87 I find the minute I call and arrange to go in to be checked, baby starts partying again 🙄 but it’s always worth giving them a ring.

Is anybody else feeling a bit achey/crampy at the moment? I had a strange feeling last week where it felt like baby was about to just fall out(!) and then ever since I’ve felt a little bit period-y (only very mild). Is baby planning an early arrival or is this normal and I’m just being optimistic?

Flora20 · 22/09/2020 14:57

I've been on mat leave since the start of September, was supposed to be the end of the month but I didn't feel comfortable going back into school - and seeing the chaos that's going on, I'm glad I'm out of it! I've managed to get various preparations out of the way so glad I'm off actually, wouldn't have been able to do as much if I were still working.

@DressingGown87 Make sure you get checked out again, especially if you're feeling ill too. Hope you manage to get some time away from work before the induction too! X

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 22/09/2020 15:13

I had periody cramps for 2 days before i gave birth last time. looking back I'm not sure why I didn't think any more of it. Saying that it could just be general aches and pains and pressure of growing baby!

1990shopefulftm · 22/09/2020 15:20

@Sls668 i've aches in general and a lot of lower back pain but i've been putting it down to baby having less space to move in now.

DressingGown87 · 22/09/2020 15:25

@Sls668 thank you. That’s how I feel crampy, heavy, sick, tired. If she’s ready to come, I’m not, I’m exhausted 😂 that’s what she usually does, I’ve even gone to the point before of driving to the hospital car park (without calling) to see if that tricked her 🙈 and wearing the bands at home!

@Flora20 I’m not suprised you didn’t start the term, with the amount of colds and general panic in schools. Thank you going to (try) have a nap and see how it is.

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt that’s what I thought with the cramps, just her generally being heavy and shuffling down.

Freddie1987 · 22/09/2020 15:57

@FirstSurprise001 that's great you're being referred...hope it happens quickly! And yeah, fully expecting the hip pain to carry on for a few weeks post-birth, what with all the shuffling of your organs back to their normal positions!

I've been having the v mild period pains on/off too, midwife just said baby's head still needs to move further down into pelvis so you're going to feel more stretching/aching.

SophieJosie95 · 22/09/2020 17:26

Hi everyone, I've not posted in this thread for months!

I overcame my hyperemesis & Sialorhea at 17 weeks & I'm now 36+2, on annual leave & starting maternity on the 2nd Oct.

Little miss is due on 18th October. We've just had our maternity shoot photos back and I've really enjoyed my pregnancy (after being poorly that is!)

Ready for her to come now though!
Aside from going in for reduced movements three times, everything's been fine!

Hope you're all well (too long to catch up properly) it's nice to see familiar names from before x

BS9790 · 22/09/2020 17:46

Daft question 🙈 should you be concerned about a sudden increase in movements?
Everything states "any change to movements".... Feel a bit stupid worrying about baby moving too much lol... But it's been constant all day today, usually he needs a bit of prodding and poking!!

Mc3209 · 22/09/2020 18:17

1 more week until I finish work (AL first then mat leave). I am so ready. But of course now there is a mad rush to finish everything, so I am right there with you @DressingGown87 and @Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt

@Sls668 I've been having occasional mild period type cramp which weirded me out a bit. I am not ready for labour just yet!

@BS9790 that's a tricky one. I guess they do say "change in movements" so no harm in calling to ask them if they are worried.

Flora20 · 22/09/2020 18:20

@Sls668 Very crampy and achy with lots of pressure in my pelvis at the moment. I had a bath this afternoon to ease it a bit which helped, and baby seems to have moved around a bit which has made it a bit better again. I think it's just where baby is moving down and settling in - having said that I never felt like this the first time round despite her being engaged for a while before the birth! Personally I think mine will come early like big sister - but seeing as I'm only 35+4 it had better be another couple of weeks still!

Flora20 · 22/09/2020 18:24

@BS9790 I went in last week very much for a change in movements rather than a decrease because of the advice - the midwife didn't mind at all and said that even though everything was fine to go back in the next day if I still felt it was different enough to worry. It might well be something that you've eaten or baby has moved into a different position, but you might as well ring in for peace of mind...

BS9790 · 22/09/2020 19:30

@Flora20, did they put you on the monitor? Ive been in with reduced movements three times during the pregnancy, so feel a bit daft phoning for the complete opposite 🤣 the day unit is closed now so id have to phone triage.

Flora20 · 22/09/2020 19:43

@BS9790 Yes, I think it's a standard response to saying you're not happy about the movements! I think baby had just turned round so I was feeling movements regularly but they were much less powerful than previously, the midwife just said if I need reassurance it was fine at any time of day or night. She made a big point to me of saying to call at any time, if I was lying in bed worrying at 2am then just to pop in and they'd always check. You could ring and see what they say. X

DressingGown87 · 22/09/2020 21:31

I came and got checked, and she started having a party. Her HB was over 188 Bpm but then dropped to 150-160, which I think is high, but they aren’t concerned. Considering she’s not moved al day, I’m not impressed, but they said you should never question whether you should go in or not.

They say the cramps is just her moving down and the pelvic cartilage softening.

@BS9790 I think if your worried give the triage a call; they would rather you get checked than worry.

I'm not going on mat leave until next Friday when I'll be 38+5 😫 and in retrospect I wish I had taken more annual leave beforehand but my mat leave cover isn't starting until a week after anyway and I can't do that to my team. At least it's from home, but I'm so tired!!!
