Does anyone have any book recommendations on newborn development / the first few months?

NaomiB79 · 09/08/2020 22:12

@MrsR87 I've had heartburn / reflux too as a result of pregnancy as never I've never had it in my life before! I find a glass of cold milk helps neutralise the acid and relieves my symptoms.

Hanrora06 · 10/08/2020 08:20

@confused107 that's exactly what I thought. I was literally clueless about pregnancy before I actually was pregnant. I knew nothing. So now I feel like obviously I can't know everything but I do want to know more, and so even if the midwives are like OK so it's not likely you can
have X, or you need to have Y, because of Z reason I'll understand what they're saying, and feel confident that's a good decision, or if not then I can feel it's totally fine to question further! I'm really enjoying the Positive Birth Book so far, really easy to read and lots of good information about labour in particular. It actually is making me feel better and more confident, which I guess is the point! And that's exactly what I thought, I've been passing on the basics of what I've learned so far to my husband and it makes me feel better to think he knows something about what's going to happen.

Hanrora06 · 10/08/2020 08:22

@Bobbieblu I don't! I'd love to hear if anyone else does though! The only thing I've found similar is the Babies series on Netflix, really really interesting, all about research and the development of babies up to around a year old. It covers loads of different topics, so I definitely would recommend that, there's 2 series now.

Bobbieblu · 10/08/2020 08:28

Thank you @Hanrora06 I’ll check out the babies series.

There is so much focus on pregnancy and the different stages and just don’t want the babies to arrive and be completely clueless. I’ve got an anti-natal class booked in September but keen for a book to refer to when I’m panicking post birth.

Kpm7 · 10/08/2020 08:46

Yes I feel like I need some knowledge. My mum bought me some think pads to use after giving birth as well as disposable knickers and breast pads. I assumed I would need breast pads but when I seen the others I rang my friend and said not sure why she did this. My friend said yes you will probably need them. Then it hit me like there is more to this than I think or know 😂

peachypetite · 10/08/2020 08:56

My friends have rated the wonder weeks app and said at times when baby was going through sleep regression etc they’d check the app and it would coincide with a developmental stage, sounds useful!

@Hanrora06 @Bobbieblu I was absolutely clueless with my first and only had 2 months to prepare as I was 7 months when I realised - I've said before sorry to repeat myself! I know every trust is different but I found the midwives in the hospital so informative and the information they left me with. I also found the community midwives who come round straight after the birth so helpful with how many clothes he should have on and how much milk etc. I think I lived on google for the first few months 🤣

I also got rushed in and had no hospital bag my friend had just given birth and brought me all her post - maternity disposable pad/knickers which were life savers - she also got me this after birth spray which was amazing!

They also do this spray for anyone struggling to sleep - especially in the last trimester

@nearlyamummyof2boys do you mean you didn’t find out you were pregnant until seven months last time? Shock

OP posts:
nearlyamummyof2boys · 10/08/2020 09:52

Yeah I've always had irregular periods and he was right up behind my ribs - I thought I was maybe 2 months when I went for a scan! The Sonographers couldn't believe it lol! It's so strange cause I had no symptoms that pregnancy at all! He was so hidden I couldn't feel any movement. But this pregnancy I have it ALL so now I understand why people don't believe me - especially now I can feel this baby moving around so much! 😂
I'm also so much bigger now at 6 months then I was at 9 months with my first it's so strange how all pregnancies are different!
But it's also why it's been so good on here as even though I have a son some of the early maternity stuff was all new to me 🙂
@peachypetite

nearlyamummyof2boys · 10/08/2020 09:55

But that's what I mean about having no time to prepare and being so clueless but you really do just adapt - we were lucky to have good people around us and we got lots of peoples old furniture and prams etc. Which is why I kinda want everything new now 🥰🥰

peachypetite · 10/08/2020 09:56

Oh my goodness what a shock!

@nearlyamummyof2boys wow I didn't know you found out at 7 months last time!! Amazing that you didn't have many symptoms though, and glad that everyone could help.

@Hanrora06 I also had no clue about pregnancy/birth/life with a newborn! I'm reading Hypnobirthing: practical ways to make your birth better, my husband bought it for me early on for us both to read so I thought I should probably get cracking now as I'm 5 months. It's also written by the founder of the Positive Birth Company and we are doing their online course in a few weeks so will let you know how it goes. ☺️

danielasummer · 10/08/2020 10:26

How far does everyone live from their chosen place to give birth? I've developed this fear that I won't make it to the hospital in time as we've chosen a hospital slightly further out than our local for various reasons, but now I'm panicking as it's 35 minutes away!

Kj1010 · 10/08/2020 11:10

We only have one hospital really and I'm bout 10 minutes away from it

Anni3getyourgun · 10/08/2020 11:22

@Bobbieblu - I lived by this book with my first DD. It tells you what to expect from baby from week to week for the first six months. Very reassuring and not prescriptive at all... Also you don’t have to do any chunks of reading, just a week at a time.

Also, hello everyone! I’ve just found this thread and been reading through. I’m 25 weeks with DC2, have a 2-year-old DD already Smile

Bobbieblu · 10/08/2020 11:25

Thank you @Anni3getyourgun I’ll check it out, but sounds exactly like what I’m after!

Bobbieblu · 10/08/2020 11:26

@nearlyamummyof2boys 7months!! That must have been the biggest shock.

confused107 · 10/08/2020 11:27

Wow @nearlyamummyof2boys what a shock! It's amazing how pregnancies can be so different

@Kj1010 I'm 30-40 mins so similar to you. In my very limited knowledge I don't think labour is normally that quick, so I haven't really thought about the distance before. More worried about my husband not being able to stay and getting back in time to be honest

In other news I found out this morning that a now not so little girl I used to babysit for is now a student midwife at the hospital I'm going to. Can't believe she cold possibly end up involved in our birth. She is still 8 and in a Disney princess dress in my mind. God I'm old!!!!

Kj1010 · 10/08/2020 11:37

@confused107 that's what Im worried about but will be holding on for as long as possible before leaving for hospital tbh will just power through

confused107 · 10/08/2020 11:43

@Kj1010 I'm still hoping restrictions will lift a bit by the time we need to go in but who knows!

nearlyamummyof2boys · 10/08/2020 13:32

Hi all I was going to start a new thread but thought I would try with you lovely ladies first!
We are about to get our first car! So was wondering if anyone with children had recommendations for a stage 1,2,3 car seat our boy is a big 11 month year old!

What's everyone gone for for their newborn car seats as well - I know it's been said before sorry!

Pinktruffle · 10/08/2020 13:39

We've gone for the Silvercross Motion which is suitable from newborn to age 4 (with various removable inserts). Its a fixed one though and not one that you can take in and our of the car easily so won't suit everyones needs.

lc86 · 10/08/2020 13:40

I loved the maxi cosi axiss for second stage car seat. I have bought the doona this time for newborn as it converts into a pram for school runs etc xx @nearlyamummyof2boys
