Has anyone ever been falsely diagnosed as miscarrying?

So Tuesday I had a scan which confirmed miscarriage following bleeding. I would have been 6 weeks.

I had a blood test Tuesday and one yesterday and my HCG levels have more than doubled. Nurse said this confirms I’m pregnant.

My head feels like it’s been scrambled!

Has anyone experienced this?

What a head fry. Are you saying HCG has doubled since the time ofthe scan when the miscarriage was diagnosed?

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 16:14

@TenShortStories

Yes. Bleeding started 9 days prior to scan.

Scan Tuesday with bloods. Scan confirmed no pregnancy. They said it’s all passed.

Bloods Thursday.

Call today - levels have doubled.

Oh wow, that is a royal head scamble.

Have they given you any advice?

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 16:16

I’m having another blood test tomorrow and depending on the results they’ll get me in for another scan.

I asked 3x and was hysterical. Nurse said she hoped they were happy tears and that I’m still pregnant.

I said I’d been on the gin and she don’t worry but don’t have anymore.

We’ve bought a plaque for a bench in the garden as remembrance and I’ve had time off work etc.

Fingers crossed xx

Boomclaps · 24/07/2020 16:31

My mum had this. Was twins. Too early to be picked up on early scan at first (6w)
On twin miscarried the other (my youngest dsis) is a gorgeous 21 year old who is probably as we speak on her way home from work with a bottle of wine!

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 16:31

Thanks Boomclap. I’m wondering if that could be it. I passed a big clot which I thought was the pregnancy. But I passed that on Monday.

This sounds crazy but could it be a new, second pregnancy? In other words maybe you did sadly have a MC but then conceived again just before your scan (too early to see anything)? If so then you'd just be a few weeks PG now, that could explain why hcg is still rising so rapidly. Either way, fingers crossed for you and sorry you had that experience x

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 16:52

It’s not impossible Umberta I suppose. I’ve not even stopped bleeding though?

OP posts:
HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 16:52

I was only 6 weeks though so not sure there was time for a second pregnancy.

YES!!! Blooming hell YES!!

She is now nine and changes clothes three times a day.

OP - positive pregnancy test. Went to doc for early scan ( I was very upset as I did not want another child). They did the scan and did not find a heartbeat. Did bloods and all had dropped away. He sent me home to wait for miscarriage. i was relieved. Went home, had cramps and period like pain. Bleeding etc but not heavy. Sure that was it. Moved country, and much later noticed a few things, did another test, found a doctor and the rest you know. Goodluck. A roller coaster for you.

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 17:05

HarriedHarriet. Omg it’s insane!

Ds’s nickname when I was pregnant with him was “bumblebee baby”. (Bumblebees can’t fly according to physics - except they can!)

Ds was an unviable pregnancy. Except he is 7 now and very very loud which makes me wonder if perhaps he was viable after all!

My story - bleeding at 6 weeks, had scan, holds sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat. Until a few months before if the average measurement was 20mm or more and no heartbeat then confirmed miscarriage. However there had been the odd case where a 20mm “miscarriage” turned out to be a viable baby. So they investigated and discovered that in about 1 in 100 that 20mm was viable. 21mm or over was never viable. But to be sure they changed the rule to 25mm. Ds measured in at 24mm. So effectively impossible to be viable but they couldn’t technically confirm miscarriage to me. But they told me it was. So they sent me home and I had to go back two weeks later to confirm. Got back two weeks later for confirmation. Scanner was backed up so they did all the “you’ve had a miscarriage - what do you want to do now” counselling with me first. Decided I wanted medical management, signed forms, discussed implications for future pregnancies. Went for the confirmation scan and found a heartbeat.

The funny thing was that we didn’t say “What?!?!? What happened? How can this happen! You said it was impossible!” We said “thank you so much” and left the hospital at almost a run. I think we subconsciously thought that if we questioned it they would change their minds!

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 17:17

That’s a crazy story too.

They literally saw nothing at my 6 week scan? Just a vacant womb.

crosser62 · 24/07/2020 17:21

No.
Always been correct.
No heart beat, no foetus see at all, after 6 weeks.
HCG levels raised, doubled even, but blighted ovum.
Very very strong pregnancy symptoms, very strong but a miscarriage nonetheless.

Sorry, but always two sides to consider, I do hope that it’s good news for you.
All the best.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 24/07/2020 17:22

Good luck Op. I really hope you also have a happy ending.

One thing to add is that I went a bit loopy (sorry - awful word but can’t think how else to put it!) in my pregnancy with ds. It seems carrying a baby that you have already grieved for causes problems. But it was very hard to admit to it because I felt that I should just be happy.!

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 17:22

I’m sorry to hear the crosser. I do expect that to be the case. Although the nurse reassured me I was pregnant. Which has left me confused? If she said my levels weren’t doing what they expected but hey, your scan was conclusive. But she didn’t. She said I’m pregnant.

I have been grieving this baby I don’t want to restart that.

I can understand that @Mumoftwoyoungkids my head is so muddled. Pregnancy doesn’t bring out the best in me anyway 😳

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 24/07/2020 17:42

Bleeding at about 8 weeks. GP examined me and said I had an open cervix and was miscarrying, and sent me to the hospital for a D&C.

A scan at the hospital pre D&C found a heartbeat.

The heartbeat is still going, more than 20 years later.

It was a bit of a mind-scramble to be honest.

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 17:49

That sounds so traumatic Grumpy. Thank god they scanned you first.

OP posts:
Dozer · 24/07/2020 17:51

Think would treat it that you still don’t know pending the next scan. Can be awful waiting. I don’t think the nurse should’ve said that on the basis of blood results only.

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 17:55

Agreed, thanks Dozer.

OP posts:
TenThousandSpoons0 · 24/07/2020 17:59

OP what are your hcg levels? It’s possible your dates are off by a week or two and so it was too early to see anything on the scan? And did you have a transvaginal USS?
Good luck!

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 18:06

I can’t remember what they are - but they had more than doubled. It is poss my dates were out. If they were though, would you not still see something even if they were a week out would you expect to see a sac at 5 weeks?

It was transvaginal.

I haven’t had sex since the bleeding started so can’t be a very, very early new pregnancy.

I wish the nurse phoned when I’d calmed down. I was so hysterical. Now I’m calm I have some many questions. Hopefully I can talk to someone tomorrow.

I had said to my husband that I still feel crap, tired, nauseous etc and was hoping to feel better. I’ve lost a lot of bloating - my clothes are fitting better.
