Has anyone ever been falsely diagnosed as miscarrying?

So Tuesday I had a scan which confirmed miscarriage following bleeding. I would have been 6 weeks.

I had a blood test Tuesday and one yesterday and my HCG levels have more than doubled. Nurse said this confirms I’m pregnant.

My head feels like it’s been scrambled!

Has anyone experienced this?

Oh OP how worrying for for you,

I’m assuming that they’ve ruled out ectopic? As with doubling levels but no visible pregnancy that would be my main concern, not that I’m trying to worry you at all and I’m hoping they’ve already confirmed that this is not the case😊

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 18:11

I’m not sure they have ruled it out, no. That has been at the forefront of my mind too.

I’ve been feeling dizzy and had headaches right from the start, but I’ve said that. No severe pain.

My ovaries were scanned. How do they diagnose an ectopic pregnancy?

My mother was. She “miscarried” in the OBs office. It was the early 70s at a rural facility so all they had to go on was a physical exam of what was expelled. Nothing even went to pathology. When she turned out to still be pregnant later on, The doctor was never certain if he misjudged or if she lost a twin. .

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 24/07/2020 18:17

Yes, a friend's sister. She went in they told her she had miscarried, went for a scan before having the procedure to remove the pregnancy and the baby was fine. I don't think it's very common though.

ImagineRainbows · 24/07/2020 18:17

6 weeks is way too early to confirm a miscarriage. If the uterus is empty at that point it could simply be too early to see anything. HCG is a much better indicator.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 24/07/2020 18:17

Goodness, you poor thing. You must be all over the place. Bloods sound positive but not definitive. Until you have another scan I suppose all you can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I’ll be crossing my fingers for a good outcome for you.

PaquitaVariation · 24/07/2020 18:18

This happened to me and I was treated as if it were ectopic. I spent three weeks going in and out of hospital until the levels actually fell to normal. If they had continued rising after the first day they would have operated, even though they couldn’t see anything on the scan.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 24/07/2020 18:26

I would be pretty insistent on another scan op to see what's what. So horrible to be told you'd lost your baby and then ooops no sorry you're still pregnant.

ArthurandJessie · 24/07/2020 18:28

Sorry I've not read the other posts but this actually happened to me and I was pregnant with twins I bled ALOT like gushing blood and passed clots told I'd miscarried by a and e and then took a pregnancy test a week later still pregnant to cut a long story short went for 2nd scan they could see one sack and a pole I think ( hard to remember now this was last year ) and what they thought was a haematoma bled again went for another scan and it was twins

ArthurandJessie · 24/07/2020 18:29

Oh and even though it was twins my hcg numbers were never that high

HogDogKetchup · 24/07/2020 18:34

@PaquitaVariation what do you mean when you say return to normal?

OP posts:
otterbaby · 24/07/2020 19:04

Yep! Went in at 6 weeks with heavy bright red bleeding and was told there was a sac but nothing else, it was irregularly shaped and was a clear miscarriage. Drank a few glasses of wine over the next few nights. Went in 5 days later and the nurse scanning me told me that everything looked perfect and there was a baby with a heartbeat in there! I cried on the table. I'm now 30 weeks. The bleeding turned out to be a haematoma which was nearby to the sac and healed itself within a few weeks.

I hope it's good news for you x

LionLily · 24/07/2020 23:23

Yes.
(And I went on to have a d&c after the bleeding and was STILL pregnant. The hospital analysed the d&c results, didn't see what they were expecting to see and recalled me for a pregnancy test.). Very very stressful and worrying time.

He's 25 now and is loafing on my sofa watching The Shining.

Harriedharriet · 24/07/2020 23:25

OP - good luck. I did not read your post properly. I hope it works out for you.

I’ve know lots of situations where nothing is seen on scan at 4-5 weeks and then everything turns out to be okay. Also lots of situations where there is heavy bleeding and everything turns out to be okay. If hcg is doubling then more than likely it will be a viable intrauterine pregnancy but as PP have said, could be an ectopic, or could still be a miscarriage (occasionally hcg can still rise). The reason I asked about hcg levels is that you would usually expect to see something On TV scan if hcg over 1500 and certainly over 2500.
Generally a scan a minimum of a week apart would give more info (eg will see gestation sac at least) tho if it’s very early pregnancy you may have to wait longer to see a heartbeat.
Sorry - it’s such a difficult time I know. Fingers crossed for you.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 24/07/2020 23:33

Oh and I see you also asked about ectopic pregnancy diagnosis - sometimes the ectopic can be seen in the tube or ovary, but sometimes it’s still too small to see. Sounds like they’ve looked for that and they’ll look again on your next scan as well.

PaquitaVariation · 25/07/2020 00:34
@PaquitaVariation what do you mean when you say return to normal?
Sorry, it should have said until the hcg levels were negligible. Apparently so long as they were still above a certain level they couldn’t say whether it was an ectopic or not and I was still at risk of having it rupture. It took weeks and weeks until they would give me the all clear and said it was over. It was really very distressing at the time but we went on to have two children. I really hope you have a happier outcome, like lots of the other posters.

HogDogKetchup · 25/07/2020 06:29

@TenThousandSpoons0

Thank you. I think my levels are now around 1500 having more than doubled. I’ll ask today where this would place me in weeks.

HogDogKetchup · 25/07/2020 06:30

OMG @LionLily that was one sturdy baby! What a roller coaster!!!

OP posts:
HogDogKetchup · 25/07/2020 06:31

@TenThousandSpoons0 sorry just to clear, Thursday they were over 1500 but scan was Tuesday.

OP posts:
HogDogKetchup · 25/07/2020 06:32

I’ve written a list of questions to ask today.

Thanks everyone.

@PaquitaVariation

Oh crikey, were you in a state of suspense for weeks? 😞 sounds horrendous, I’m sorry you endured that.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 25/07/2020 06:47

So much good luck to you - really sounds like it might just be a bit early. Fingers crossed.

Any chance you know what your HVG levels were around about the time they scanned?? Sorry if i've missed that in the thread. 1500 according to google would put you inbetween 5-6 weeks... could you possibly be a bit later than you thought? I know sometimes they don't see a baby on a scan but i think thats when you're so early! Good luck OP!
