Hi everyone.
I noticed our thread was about to fill up, so thought I’d start a new one quick. Hope that’s not too presumptuous of me and have to say thank you to @Sheera1 for starting the thread.

As the title says it’s a discussion thread for any pregnant women who are classed as that bit older for a mum to be.

Copying our list over so we can keep up. If you would like to join please copy and paste the list, adding your own details in date order.

Really hope I’m doing this right! 🙈

Oh @AliasGrape congratulations!!!! What lovely news to wake up to. I came straight on here to see if there was any news from you Grin

Iris is such a beautiful name and I bet your wee girl is beautiful to match. Easier said than done but do try to rest while you're in there and recover. Definitely a good idea for a debrief to help you process what has gone on. Meanwhile enjoy those squishy cuddles with your new princess FlowersFlowersGrin

Frazzlerock · 31/07/2020 08:16

@AliasGrape what amazing news! Huge congratulations to you all! Iris is a gorgeous name and DP and I considered it ourselves as it was his grandmother's name. Beautiful! I bet you can't believe she is finally here Flowers Enjoy your newborn snuggles, and yes its a good idea to speak to someoe about your experience before you leave. I wish I'd done that with DS1 as I still don't really know what happened 15 years later. Get all the info you can and write notes so you can process it all when you're ready xx

stairgates · 31/07/2020 09:06

Congratulations Alias!! Irid is beautiful if you go with thatGrin I had a previous scary c/s experience with one of mine and know it helped to discuss delivery when I was ready to help put it into place, for now enjoy that gorgeous little thing!! Grin

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 31/07/2020 09:22

MANY congratulations!! @AliasGrape beautiful name! Seconding everyone who's mentioned a debrief. Emcs is traumatic - I had several panic attacks after mine and carry some affects of the trauma 19 yrs later. Don't be frightened to ask for one. I think sometimes (particularly the medical profession) are quick to say - "all is well now; off you go!"

The floor mat is made with super chunky yarn.

Frazzlerock · 31/07/2020 09:40

Oh I love both of those @onlyreadingneverposting8!
I'd love to make a floor mat so I think my next purchase will be some super chunky yarn! Did you get it from a pattern, or make it up as you go along? It's that lovely C2C pattern isn't it. I really must try that. I may have to copy yours Grin

I'm just dong the border now for the spotty blanket. That seems to be taking longer than I thought and I don't think I'm doing it quite right but hey ho, I'm sure it will be fine!

I've just reached the page in my 'day-by-day' preg book where they say I'm now in the week where baby can be born and survive Shock That's pretty scary. The book says its a huge milestone and I should be feeling relieved to reach this point, but I don't really feel that way. Surely a baby born in the 24th week would have all sorts of life limiting problems? Sad Still incredible to think about though. Makes baby seem so much more real.

Mysa74 · 31/07/2020 09:41

@AliasGrape @alias, congratulations on the arrival of baby iris sorry it didn't go as well as we all hope... I love her name by the way, I've been a brownie and cub leader for over 20 years and have never met an Iris, I love it Smile

Mine is an opposite story... Didn't get my pool, but equally escaped the dreaded stitches, so i'm happy with that Grin

I lost the thread so thank you for posting.

I had a check in with my midwife 41+1 for a possible sweep after turning one down at 40 weeks exactly. My first 2 arrived at 42 and 42+1 so didn't feel ready. Midwife agreed. She's lovely, really listened and luckily agreed with my logic.

Had a bit of the plug come away on s few of the days between the 2 appointments and a couple of painfree tightenings, one as I was leaving the midwife at 12:45. I had to go to the security office to change my work parking permit and bumped into a couple of colleagues so finally headed got home (10 min drive) at about 1355, 2.

That's when the pains started. I've been induced twice, so had no idea how these things are supposed to go, I'd been told the contractions build up gradually and it takes hours to get to the hospital stage, but mum had told me to let her know when things kicked off as she was having the girls. I rang her at 14.20 then the hospital as I wanted to cancel my 5pm appointment to discuss possible induction as I didn't think it would be necessary and they'd squeezed me in to a non existant gap, contractions pretty fast by then and after a few questions they asked me to go in.

I packed a few bits for the girls, my husband drive them to Grandma's and took me to the ward for a check over this was 15:10. DH had to wait out side until I was pronounced to be in active labour. They took me in, asked for a wee sample to dip if I could and joked (nicely) to avoid having baby in the toilet. That was the point it started to feel like pushing. She checked me over, said I was fully dilated and sent someone for DH. A couple of minutes ( less than 20 mins after reaching the hospital) baby Tabitha arrived all 7lb 15 of her Smile.

If you reached the end of my essay, thanks for reading, if not, nevermind, it's helped me straighten things out in my head Wink

How's everyone else doing?

Mysa74 · 31/07/2020 09:51

Forgot to say, I got all the way to the end without anyone one mentioning how ancient I was... Still don't understand how a baby at 42 needed constant threats of induction and early csections and emergency csections despite having my first apt at 6 weeks and never showing problems, where as a late discovery baby who slipped under the radar and had no screening tests and a dating scan at nearly 25 weeks got discharged from the consultant at 34 weeks... Despite me being 46!!!
I'm going to thank Covid Grin

PregnantPorcupine · 31/07/2020 10:02

That's wonderful news @Mysa74 ! Congratulations! Some great baby names on this thread too Smile

40+2 and still nothing doing here. I've been getting pretty emotional..lots of tears. Think I'm just terrified of the whole thing (birth + taking care of a baby for the first time ever) and really want to get on with it now. Curry for tea tonight 😂

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 31/07/2020 10:03

@Mysa74 many many congratulations! Another beautiful name!!

@Frazzlerock yep - just c2c again. So versatile and easy! I used Bernat pop bulky yarn - available on amazon and just worked until I was happy with the width and length. I used just short of 4 skeins with my mat measuring 40" by 32". The bulk yarn is very satisfying as it's so quick to work up but does make your hand and arm ache a bit!! Tempted to make another one in another colour way! 😊

Frazzlerock · 31/07/2020 10:15

Oh wow @@Mysa74 and I second that is a beaut of a name! And a lovely weight too. My two were so huge they looked like toddlers when they came out so if I had any choice in the matter, I would deffo go for an under 8lb to enjoy the cute little newborn stage! Certainly sounds like a hectic birth! But I bet you're so pleased little Tabitha is here Flowers

@onlyreadingneverposting8 I will get onto Amazon today. What size hook did you use?

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 31/07/2020 10:26

@Frazzlerock size N 10mm that's what bernat recommends so just went with that.

Frazzlerock · 31/07/2020 10:38

@PregnantPorcupine you're next! I remember how emotional and fed up I was when DS1 was 12 days overdue. People don't stop asking you if baby is here and all my pregnant friends due after me were having their babies and I was like, what about me!? Like the weather now, we were in the summer 2005 heatwave so I do feel your pain. Little one will be here soon. See if you can plan some stuff to do and give the old 'law of sod' a helping hand.

AliasGrape · 31/07/2020 12:20

Congratulations @Mysa74 I’m glad you had a really positive experience and I love the name Tabitha too. I have a good friend called Tabitha, she’s really cool and suits her name so well.

We’re still in hospital, gone from having the 4 bed room to myself last night to it being full now - babies everywhere!

Thanks for kind comments about the EMCS too. There were loads of positives about the birth too, not least how amazing my husband was and how truly lovely and supportive some of the many different midwives we crossed paths with were (and still are). I just didn’t get any of the things I wanted and pretty much everything I didn’t, except of course I got my baby safe and sound which is the bit that really matters. I just feel like I let her down somehow though, and it’s not helped by the fact I’ve not been able to feed her a drop yet so, because I had/have an infection and there’s a chance she does (waiting for blood cultures) the paediatrician wants her to have some formula to prevent dehydration. So I feel like I can’t do anything much ‘right’ at the moment but at the same time I know I’m being irrational and it’s probably exhaustion speaking more than anything.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 31/07/2020 13:59

@AliasGrape you've got everything right and are continuing to do so. Your paediatrician has recommended what should happen and you're following that advice.

Sheera1 · 31/07/2020 16:17

Congratulations @AliasGrape and @Mysa74. Two lovely girls and amazing names and birth stories.

Alias I didn't realise how tramatic I felt after mine and I remember taking till about 9 months to talk about it without getting really emotional. It was an emergency c section in the end too. The debrief sounds a great idea. I read in my notes that were left at my bedside by accident about 6 days after the birth (was in hospital for a week after) and it said DS was resuscitated! No-one had mentioned it to me at all. When they had my old notes this time round they have out significant fetal distress for DS on my notes! I guess they didn't want to stress me at the time but I think knowing what happened and talking it through would have helped. Please please don't get hung up on not having a vaginal birth or listening to anyone a out that sort of nonsense. What had to happen happened for the best for you both. I am willingly having a planned section this time.

So sorry to hear you have an infection. When they sent you home after your waters broke I was a bit surprised as know that can cause infections but what do I know really!

Glad you are well and safe and that we lovely babba will be yours to take home and feed all day soon ❤. X

Sheera1 · 31/07/2020 16:20

@Frazzlerock I just got that milestone at 24 weeks too. It is an odd one. I did read some articles and think although they might survive the quality of life thereafter can be devastating and awful for the child and parents as the child was in so much pain and so many operations etc. That being said I did see a success story where the wee girl is now 10 and you would never know she had such a worrying start to life. I thi k a few milestones a bit slower than expected but great otherwise.

I have been in the sea in Scotland today and hope it wasn't too cold for my baby!! 🥶😁

Frazzlerock · 31/07/2020 19:14

@onlyreadingneverposting8 I've ordered the Bernat pop bulky and a big fat hook. Went for the 'Omni pop' colour. Can't wait to get started now!

@Sheera1 how lovely to be in the sea on a day like today! 🧡

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 01/08/2020 06:29

@Frazzlerock liking the omni. Husband says he's now a crochet widow as I'm either crocheting or looking at yarn 🤣🤣 I was soooooooooo hot yesterday- made me feel quite ill! (Although that is my default feeling anyway!) 😬😬 @Sheera1 being one the sea sounds absolutely fantastic! My ice pack was a poor substitute 😄

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 01/08/2020 07:17

*in not one the sea!

Frazzlerock · 01/08/2020 08:45

@onlyreadingneverposting8 my DP can't complain because he has rekindled his love/hate relationship with RC cars so, while I'm crocheting, he's fixing/swearing at cars to be smashed up again! 😂

How's everyone this morning? Anyone got any weekend plans?

I woke early this morning as my back was achey. But I'm now back in bed just relaxing.
Is it hot enough for everyone? 😬

footprintsintheslow · 01/08/2020 09:51

@Frazzlerock I was awake at 3am till 5am so am now still in bed and hoping somebody brings me breakfast.

@onlyreadingneverposting8 I love love your c2c blankie. I'm currently using very thin yarn and that aches my one arm.

Crap sorry meant to copy paste a general update from my phone but have accidentally copied a long breastfeeding rant to my sister, complete with identifying details- going to try and get it deleted. Sleep deprivation and hormones hey?
