My parents live 2 hours away and I am hoping to take the baby up for Christmas. I'm due end of November so I'm a little worried about having to stop every half an hour but needs must I guess. I would be gutted to miss Christmas with my family. DH's family don't celebrate Chrostmas at all but it's always been a really big deal for my family. When my brother found out I was pregnant, the first thing he asked me was if we would still be able to come up for Christmas! The baby will also be my parents first grandchild.

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 11:35

I would definitely go @Pinktruffle. I took my daughter to ireland when she was 7 weeks. We stopped on the way to the airport, and then from doubling airport home to my parents. You just factor in that extra time. It's worth it to be with family.

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 11:36

Dublin, not doubling. Obviously 🙄

littlegem84 · 18/06/2020 11:50

@BuffaloCauliflower I'm leaning towards the mountain buggy duet because it's slimline and our house is old and awkward so I want something I can easily get in the house without collapsing but I think I'm going to have to find somewhere where I can try my son in the other seat and make sure he is comfy.

@OurLittlePumpkin also a fiat over here. However DH does have a bigger car but I'm aware in the first year I'm the type of person to go out and about and keep busy so will want to drive out myself on mat leave. In terms of prams I need to go try some out but we ideally do want a pram good on country walks as well as city which tends to make them a bit bigger. I've YouTube videos of people fitting the m&p ocarro and icandy peach as examples into the boot but you do have to take the wheels off. Having said that this video of removing wheels does make it look incredibly easy! (I think one of them you take both back wheels off and the other just 1) I think there is plenty others that will fit too but just 2 we are looking at at the moment.

@HarrietM87 I think that's a really good point regarding covid- I also would much rather be isolating now in pregnancy than with a new born so have to look at the positives. I am hopefully nct classes may be face to face though in sept/Oct 🤞

HarrietM87 · 18/06/2020 12:04

@PinkTruffle hopefully won’t be the case for you but my son wouldn’t have sat quietly in his car seat for any length of time as a newborn anyway (he would only sleep on me). You’ll probably find you’ll need to do feeds and nappy changes etc on the way anyway so won’t be a massive inconvenience to add a couple of stops in on the journey.

HarrietM87 · 18/06/2020 12:07

@littlegem84 we used a mountain buggy duet for our nanny share - it’s good! Barely any wider than a single pram amazingly and I liked how the babies are side by side. My son and our share partner were similar ages so we didn’t want the set up where one was above the other and the lower one couldn’t see anything. The seats are fairly narrow though so worth trying your older child in them. My son is a very large 2 year old and still fits in fine.

Pinktruffle · 18/06/2020 12:18

@harrietm87 I had said that it DH, we will need to stop for feeds and changing so at least one stop would be needed regardless of how long the baby can stay in the car seat. One of us will sit in the back with the baby and I think the car seat we are looking at reclines so hopefully that can take a little bit of pressure off the little ones back.

We will have to wait and see what baby's sleeping habits are like! That and the actual birth/staying in hospital are the bits I'm most worried about. I'm not good when I'm tired. I keep wondering if I should get my mum to come and stay!

BuffaloCauliflower · 18/06/2020 12:25

@littlegem84 they look great, I haven’t seen those before

CheshireKitCat · 18/06/2020 13:28

Hi all
New on here, due 24th November, so it's lovely to join you all Smile

I wondered what your views are of NCT classes? I wanted to go to them but shocked at the cost. What do you reckon?

Becca65 · 18/06/2020 13:33

@Murphy1999 I was prescribed aspirin from 12 weeks onwards, as a precaution due to my mum having pre-eclampsia

Murphy1999 · 18/06/2020 13:36

@Becca65 I got prescribed it from 12 weeks on too because off how small my little one was the first time, but I was in told I have to take one table a day and now I'm out on too two a day, and they said they might need to up it again but I haven't physically seen anyone and that was all done over the phone

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 13:36

@CheshireKitCat I did them on my first. Utterly and completely useless practically, and they were obsessed with labour, as if you dont need any advice about what happens when the baby actually comes, but I made great friends that I still talk to and meet now.

SMcG1 · 18/06/2020 13:43

Does everyone have a way to contact their midwife directly? I have only been given the number for the community midwifes and I’ve never been told who my midwife is.

HarrietM87 · 18/06/2020 13:45

@CheshireKitCat I found my NCT classes pretty useful...maybe depends on the person leading it. We had sessions on the birth (all kinds of birth from home to planned c section, and different pain relief options), feeding (breast and bottle) and the basics of baby care like bathing and safe sleeping and changing nappies. I think you can get all or most of that from the free NHS ones run by most hospitals, but the best thing about it for me was the friends I made. They are all really local to me (which I guess less likely to be the case with the hospital ones) and we all had our babies within a 10 day period. We met up once a week on mat leave and it was amazing to have a support network of people at exactly the same stage as you. We still message on our WhatsApp group daily and nearly everyone is now pregnant with baby 2!

Murphy1999 · 18/06/2020 14:39

Hey everyone looking for some advice, my works planning on opening mid July and it's a cafe/restaurant and really skeptical about going back especially with this virus, with my job we can't physically social distance!

littlegem84 · 18/06/2020 14:49

@CheshireKitKat I'd echo the same as above. I wasn't fussed about NCT as I'm from a big family and didn't think I'd learn much but my DH was really keen (there hadn't been a baby in his family for 30 years!) so we went. I met the most phenomenal group of people and we are very close now. It's lovey to see all the babies growing up together.

CheshireKitCat · 18/06/2020 16:37

Thanks @littlegem84 and @harrietM87
I was really hoping it would give me a new network of mums at the same stage as me. I'm an older mum having had a long 8 year journey trying to conceive so all my friends had their kids 10+ years ago. It would be great to meet others at the same stage we're at even though I'll be the old lady of the group! I guess it's just the luck of the draw who'll be there.
I'll look into it again. Thanks!

HarrietM87 · 18/06/2020 16:41

@CheshireKitCat I had my son at 31 and was the youngest in our group by a few years. The others ranged from 35-40 and 2 were IVF babies. But age doesn’t matter!

I think because of the expense of the courses (though NCT does provide assistance with fees for those on lower incomes) people doing the courses tend to be a bit older on average, but prob depends where you live too.

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 16:46

@CheshireKitCat I was 27 having my DD and I was the youngest by miles! The average age was about 35-38. I think my NCT friends thought I was insane for having a baby in my 20s. I am now having my second at 29. They think I am doubly mad now 😆😆 I think if you did an NCt course you would find many mothers near your age

Becca65 · 18/06/2020 17:11

@Murphy1999 I'm on 150mg a day. They put me on it, and haven't had any blood pressure problems so far, so I assume I'll just stay on that dose. No one has reviewed it, in fact I have to explain again at each appointment now why I was out in it in the first place - I don't think they're planning to review or change it unless I have any problems of my own.

Becca65 · 18/06/2020 17:13

I've just looked on NCT site, is it usual to not have any class at the location near you at any one time? The ones for my due date are all really quite far away, and there's nothing for those that are close that are when I'm due?

Becca65 · 18/06/2020 17:14

I'm interested in it for the network side of things so closest would be far better

SqidgeBum · 18/06/2020 17:19

I had to go for the next town over as they had none available in my town, but it's only a 15 minute drive. Maybe email them and see if they have another one scheduled.
