when it does happen they nod sagely and go 'oh yes.. this happens to 1 in 100 pregnant women'

(and why is it always 1 in 100)

I am awaiting your opinions before posting the bizarre things that occurred during my otherwise totally healthy pregnancies

Lots of nosebleeds.
Dribbling in bed and waking up to a drenched pillow.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. So bad I couldn't feel the gearstick when driving.

sweetkitty · 19/09/2007 14:06

SP bloody D

feeling that your fanjo is at your knees (only happened with the second one)
becoming incontinent (again second one only)
feeling like you can't breathe as theres a bum under your ribs
that if your first is early it doesn't follow that your second one will be

PotPourri · 19/09/2007 14:13

Weird cravings - I don?t mean for gherkins or something normal (although I did have that one second time round). But cravings for the smell of rubber, cleaning products and eating toothpaste. Yes, all true, and all 3 pregnancies! Varicous veins, not just on your legs! Piles, headaches, needing to drink about 4 litres of water a day. Certain smells making you want to hurl - not just in the three months. E.g. the smell of breath, or smoke. Not being able to get a full wee out when heavily pregnant, so you need to rock your pelvis a bit to release the last bit. HEARTBURN - no one tells you that you will be quite happily glugging gaviscon straight from the huge bottle, a thousand times a day, and at no time thinking - this tastes gross, I can't take any more. And yes, your feet grow in size, and if you are unlucky your ankles too - so you need to go and get new shoes, or wear sandals

The good stuff that people don?t tell you about either - your hair doesn't fall out as normal so you end up with lovely thick, shiny hair. How lovely it is to get in a big bath and feel all svelte and size 10 like - i.e. you don't feel all heavy and fat (and can't see your whale-,ike stature under the bubbles). You develop a real tenderness for other children - your own, random ones on the street (actually an upsetting one sometimes if you see the NSPCC advert by accident and then blub for hours). But I have felt such intense joy just watching and spending time with my children when pregnant. You get more assertive (angry, some might say) and stand up for yourself a bit more - well I did - had a real feeling of 'how dare they? I'm pregnant don't you know!'. You have every excuse to eat chocolate and not worry about getting fat, as you will anyway, without the chocolate - lovely. But finally, the biggest surprise I had about being pregnant, and more so having had a baby - there is a parents (very close aunties/uncles) club that I just didn't know about. So many people open up to you about their children or neices once they know you are one of them! It really improved lots of my relationships at work, it gives you so much more of a connection and respect for people who have shared such a precious experience.

Potpourri, lucky you feeling svelte in the bath. I feel like a whale! We've got a really small bath so the water/bubbles never come close to covering my bump or enormous breasts so they stick out of the bath getting cold!

Piggy · 19/09/2007 14:56

I developed a phobia about things in plastic containers. I couldn't stand to see food in any kind of plastic containers - e.g. the sight of a shop bought sandwich used to make me wretch. My secretary used to bring a packed lunch into work. She had to keep the plastic lunchbox hidden otherwise I'd throw.

I doubt anyone else is as weird as me...

hellish · 19/09/2007 14:57

My mum went blind for a day when she was pregant with me. My 2 year old sister and to lead her across the street to a neighbour.

MissTea4Me · 19/09/2007 15:08

I've posted this before, but I grew a chickpea-sized lump in my armpit, which my GP told me was an auxilliary nipple, random tissue stimulated by the hormones.

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 15:15

ewww. I might stop reading this thread now; it's making me nervous.

Jobi1 · 19/09/2007 16:11

missbumpy I'm the same - I've found laying a hot flannel over your bump and boobs helps keep them warm in the bath!

WotZyefilthyblaggards · 19/09/2007 16:45

I did not know I would walk around with cabbage leaves my breasts to ease mastitis.

Bodkin · 19/09/2007 17:06

Phlegm. I was hawking like a tramp all the way through mine.

Oh, and vvvs (vulval varicose veins). Totally grim. Thank god they went away within weeks of giving birth!

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 17:07

Goddammit, why did I click on this again???

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 19/09/2007 17:12

my fanjo lips went HUGE, they were dangling half way down my thighs. really.
two days after dd was born. voila, they pinged back to normal size. weird.

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 17:12

Noooooooo

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 19/09/2007 17:13

yeeesssssss

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 17:14

I think there is a really good reason why people don't tell you this stuff...

CapnBirdseye · 19/09/2007 17:19

Labial varicosity.

Other than that I was fit as a flea! Oh I did get those faint brown marks on cheek bones but they went.

Alfie72 · 19/09/2007 17:26

Erm my baby.... who has remained breech since seeing him/ her on the 12 week scan and never made any attempt to turn around. cheeky.

PurlyQueen · 19/09/2007 19:04

Well it's too late to change our minds about being pregnant

mumclaire · 19/09/2007 21:20

Oh Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Have noticed that my 'bits' seem to be dangling somewhere around my knees and was beginning to feel like a freak and trying to figure out how to ask mw without turning purple and looking like an idiot. Now I know its relatively normal!!

sazzybee · 19/09/2007 21:34

How much your nips hurt when you get cold - owwww! I mentioned it to a couple of people and they all said 'oh yeah, hurts doesn't it?' So wtf doesn't anyone tell you?

What you need to do to ease the pain (apart from massage them in private) is dangle them in a sinkful of warm water

Blandmum · 19/09/2007 21:35

My hair got darker, and has stayed darker. happened every time I was PG

Feenie · 19/09/2007 21:36

Ridiculously vivid dreams about ex-boyfriends who you wouldn't be seen dead with if conscious (shudders).

yelnats · 19/09/2007 21:38

Leaky boobs very early! While sat drying my hair one day my boobs started leaking really bad - didnt realise till I felt the towel soaking wet and noticed it was coming from my nipples - I was only about 23 weeks!
DD2 is 7 months and my hair hasnt stopped falling out yet - happened all the way through my pregnancies. Just hasnt remembered to stop yet.

Good things - slower hair growth on legs!

frangipan · 19/09/2007 21:38

acute sense of smell always crops up with me!! My mothers perfectly normal smelling house makes me want to vomit when I walk through the door at the mo
