Technically you can never tell the sex for sure. I know many people who have been told one gender and have had the other. They are about 80% reliable (baby could be in an odd position, they could be hiding their genetalia a little etc). Some trusts will have higher rates than that. Mine has 90%. Although on DC1 we had a scan at 20 weeks, another at 22 weeks (she wasnt in the right position for measurements at the 20 week one) and another private 3d one at 30 weeks and we had the gender confirmed at each one so we were pretty sure she was a girl.

SqidgeBum · 17/05/2020 11:23

They usually can tell a gender at 16 weeks if the baby is in the right position.

Addler · 17/05/2020 11:27

There's a place in Mitcham that still allows partners to attend private scans, and the price is much cheaper than window to the womb as well. It's called Peek-A-Baby. We had one just before 11 weeks for DP to see and will probably do the same if they're still not allowing partners at the 20 week scan. But that's nearly two months away for me!

MeandSpud · 17/05/2020 11:45

Hi all,
I've been reading this thread for weeks (which has been lovely, by the way! :)) but have only got round to signing up today!

Sqidgebum, I'm a teacher too and haven't been to school since 18th March and when schools reopen I will be continuing to work from home. Guidance recommends that pregnant people work at a 2M distance from others, and as I'm a reception class teacher, there's not a chance in hell of that happening! So I will be continuing to work on home learning, plus planning for those teachers who are in school, from home. I'm aware my headteacher has been incredibly supportive and I'm very lucky, but I would also hope all headteachers would respond in a similar way! It's definitely a conversation you should be having with them now, to hopefully put your mind at rest.

While I'm here, do any of you lovely ladies suffer with hypermobility and has it become an issue yet? I'm finding I sleep well on my side until about 3am, after which I wake up every half an hour or so and have to change sides, because my hips, knees and back are in agony - they literally feel like they are burning! I'm only 14 weeks, so wasn't expecting to be in this much pain so soon, so I'm wondering if my hypermobility is making it worse than it would usually be at this point?

MrsAJKA · 17/05/2020 11:56

@SqidgeBum Hi, I’m a primary school teacher and all the pregnant teachers at my school have been told not to come back on June 1st and to carry on working from home. Speak with your head and get more clarification as you shouldn’t be going in as government advice is that all pregnant women should be working from home.
Here’s some guidance

@Addler you must be quite close to me. I went to that place in Mitcham for an early scan with dd2. It was great. I’m now wondering if I can persuade Dh that we need to go for another scan. He isn’t that bothered about missing the 20 week one as it would have been tricky with childcare anyway.

SqidgeBum · 17/05/2020 11:59

Oh thank you @MeandSpud and @MrsAJKA for the information. It's great to know how primary schools are approaching it. My HT is an extremely lovely woman and does her best for her staff so I am hopeful she will let me wfh. That's a great weight off my shoulders. I will speak with my LMs next week to get more solid information from them.

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/05/2020 12:35

@wannabebump yeh it is something to be aware of. DH is T1 diabetic so we’re actually quite hot on low blood sugar in this house, it’s just never usually me that needs to think about it!

@sqidgebum I was told my midwife at booking in that they expected the same procedures around partners to be in place for 20 week scan. It’s sad but tbh we’re not precious about finding out together. DH doesn’t feel like me hearing and then telling him the sex is much different to us both hearing from the sonographer. What matters is us finding out.

I am aware how often it can be wrong though, I think we might look at additional sex scans together later on if they’re doing them, we’ll see. Ultimately we’re most concerned about the baby’s health which is what the scans are for, knowing the sex is just a nice to have

Baby fine at scan this morning, waiting to see doctor. Thanks for your support ladies. Anyone who's had bleeding in Pregnancy it would be great to hear from you as I'm struggling with it xxx

Hancock2020 · 17/05/2020 13:02

@anon5555 so glad all is well for you.

I've just had a cry in the kitchen because I didn't know what to have for lunch lol 🙄 gotta love these hormones

HarrietM87 · 17/05/2020 13:22

@anon5555 I’m so glad all is ok. Not the same as you as I’ve had only one episode, but I had a big bleed at 10.5 weeks that filled the toilet and was followed by a day of cramps. Baby was fine and no reason found for it. Dr said he thought he could see the remains of a blood clot in the uterus which may have been full and caused the bleed. I’ve had 3 scans since the bleed and all fine. From research it’s fairly common and the only issue is if there’s a clot/sac (called a subchorionic haematoma) that’s bigger than the baby. Even then it just needs extra monitoring. Have they told you if you have that? Sometimes referred to as SCH?

HarrietM87 · 17/05/2020 13:24

I found out the sex of my baby from the harmony scan. They say it’s 99.9% accurate but I think that’s just because they can’t legally say 100. If you get told you’re having a boy from that there’s no way it’s wrong as it’s impossible that you would have male DNA in your blood otherwise!

It can actually be harder to tell the sex from later scans as the baby is more squished in there - best time is 16-24 weeks.

Fouryearslater · 17/05/2020 13:44

TMI warning...

Piles 😳 anyone else suffering? Mine are exacerbated by the constipation (itself a side effect of the morning sickness pills) but by god I’m uncomfortable today 🙁

anon5555 · 17/05/2020 14:17

Hi @HarrietM87, thanks for sharing that is helpful and glad it's going okay now. Yeh that's what I have, and it's smaller than the baby so that's good news. The doctor I spoke to was really supportive and I feel in a bit better place now, just need to accept this as normal and try to live normally despite the bleeding. Xxx

Clove20 · 17/05/2020 14:44

@fouryearslater I am suffering from piles, definitely worse when I've been on anti sickness tablets due to constipation. My prescription finished a few days ago now, and the difference is immense!

SMcG1 · 17/05/2020 14:45

Hi @MeandSpud I have hyper-mobile joints but even though I have a Beighton score of 5 I’ve never really had any issues with it except if I have been on my feet all day then I get a lot of hip pain and the odd time the joints in my fingers lock up if I apply too much pressure. Pregnancy doesn’t seem to have made it any worse but as I previously had little issue with it I don’t really expect it to be a problem for me this soon. I’m a bit worried about nearer the end of the pregnancy though. Did you have any issues with your joints before?

Fouryearslater · 17/05/2020 15:12

@Clove20 I can barely sit down today 😔 I’m trying to wean off the ondansetron but struggle without it.

Clove20 · 17/05/2020 15:18

@fouryearslater

I miss the ondansetron it was a life saver! I am struggling with nausea but not actually throwing up anymore. My GP was reluctant to prescribe me any more.
I'm also suffering from GERD. I was really looking forward to feeling better (and the second trimester) but I still feel horrific!

Have you tried anusol to ease the piles and also sitting in a warm bath helped me

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/05/2020 15:27

@HarrietM87 yes the DNA in blood thing is meant to be very conclusive - I’ve seen a few things about this test which tests just for sex but I’ve then heard mixed results?

Has anyone else seen about this test?

Fouryearslater · 17/05/2020 16:27

@Clove20 anusol yes. Might try a bath later.

I’ve started being able to manage one ondansetron every other day but worries the nausea will stop me managing fluids again and ending up in hospital again. So it’s a tricky balance.

FireflyGirl · 17/05/2020 16:27

Sorry you're suffering so badly, @Fouryearslater.

Ella's Kitchen (baby food brand) do a prune pouch, which I've seen recommended to help with constipation.

Glad everything went okay at the scan @anon5555

That test doesn't have great reviews on TrustPilot @BuffaloCauliflower, and lots of reviews on Amazon saying the results were wrong.

For the price, you might as well book a private scan and get to see baby again!

MeandSpud · 17/05/2020 16:28

@SMcG1 I was originally diagnosed due to problems with my wrists, but I've had a fair bit of pain from my knees over recent years (a lot of back problems too, but I'm not sure if the two are related). But pre-pregnancy I'd take some painkillers and get on with it: it was so rarely a major issue that I didn't even think to mention it to my midwife during my booking appointment. If I was in my third trimester now and had a big bump, I'd fully expect it, but I never would have imagined being in so much pain this early on!

Fouryearslater · 17/05/2020 17:09

@FireflyGirl I’m on some pretty heavy duty laxatives and even an enema didn’t do much the other day 😳

Pinktruffle · 17/05/2020 17:29

@anon5555 I'm so pleased to hear your scan went well. I've had a couple of bleeds during the pregnancy and found it really difficult to cope with mentally - especially when it would stop and then restart. I'm still quite fearful everytime I need to go to the toilet (which feels like every 20 mins at the moment). I've had a previous miscarriage so I found it quite triggering and had to speak to a maternity counsellor about it.

I found it reassuring to know that bleeds are common and on most occasions, baby is fine once a healthy heartbeat has been detected so I would just reassure myself with that. Look after yourself and take it easy

HarrietM87 · 17/05/2020 19:21

I said harmony scan above but obvs meant harmony test - it’s a blood test not a scan!
