All this talk of fish, I need to make a fish finger sandwich now lol

Crumpettes · 26/04/2020 12:54

Could I please be added to the Facebook group? I remember someone posted ages ago about how to join but I can’t find the post anymore.

I'd love a Big Mac! I wonder if we'll still want them when Macdonalds finally opens' hoping it's just a first trimester thing.

Meat free burgers have been sufficing but you just don't get that juiceyness I'm craving. I didn't fancy meat or dairy at all until MS kicked in and now I just crave cheese, cream cheese, beef burgers, fried chicken, fish and chips... I know the baby doesn't 'need' it with all the vitamins we're taking but if we're craving it, it's maybe good for our mental health and head space?? 🙏🏼

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/04/2020 13:03

@Chuckem15 that’s the thing, I think emotionally I’d feel worse if I ate it. Why should an animal have to die just because I fancy something?

HarrietM87 · 26/04/2020 13:05

I can highly recommend the Linda McCartney veggie burgers - so delicious!

AnxiousLady1 · 26/04/2020 13:09

For McD lovers -if you can get your hands on them, the Quorn chicken nuggets are exactly like McDonalds ones. Quorn sausage rolls are also great. I think the Greggs vegan sausage rolls use quorn.

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/04/2020 13:15

@HarrietM87 yes they are bloody good! But I fear what I’m after isn’t possible in a meat alternative

@AnxiousLady1 they are very like McDonalds one, the crispy nuggets, I buy them all the time. The more processed the product, the easier it is to replicate. It’s things like proper roast meat that are harder. I think I’ll be cooking the Quorn roast today though. Roast dinner?

ACatCalledLola · 26/04/2020 13:18

The quorn chicken nuggets are amazing. I’ve been craving them for weeks but can’t get hold of any.

ACatCalledLola · 26/04/2020 13:21

@Chuckem15 and @Crumpettes I can’t find the link but if you pm me your email address I will add you or @littlegem84 has the link. It’s all completely secret.

AnxiousLady1 · 26/04/2020 13:22

@ACatCalledLola It's strange. I have been able to get hold of very little Quorn products. When I'm able to get an online shopping I order I always add Quorn in, and every time the Quorn products are the only things missing that are not substituted. There must be some real issues with the supply and demand.

ACatCalledLola · 26/04/2020 13:36

@AnxiousLady1 my local Waitrose have some in the fresh section so I’ve been able to get escalopes and slices. I got some of their fish less fillets in the frozen section last week too but that was absolutely all they had. So annoying!

AnxiousLady1 · 26/04/2020 14:06

New question - I think this might have been mentioned before, so apologies if this is the case! Is anyone else struggling with grey roots during lockdown, and if so, are we allowed to use root touch ups? I know there's some stuff out there about not dyeing hair during pregnancy, but assuming a root colour is okay? Recommendations welcome! Haven't coloured my hair myself in years but have been getting highlights professionally for 5 years for the greys that started creeping in! 😬

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/04/2020 14:28

@AnxiousLady1 it’s fine to dye your hair when pregnant, only issue is the colour make take differently due to your hormones, but it’s not harmful. Touch your roots up!

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/04/2020 14:30

I’m feeling properly glum today. Woke up feeling really sick, then I’ve been super lethargic and dopey all day, plus feeling more hormonal than I have - hormone surge? Worrying again for baby, will it ever stop?! I just want them to get here safe and well and I can’t really control that at all. 😕

ACatCalledLola · 26/04/2020 14:57

@BuffaloCauliflower I’m feeling very similar. I’ve snapped at Dh and the dc and cried because the cat was sick all over the floor. I can’t snap out of it. I’m also so tired I can barely lift my limbs which doesn’t help. I’m feeling so anxious about my scan next week so hoping it’s a hormone surge. Presumably an increase in hormones is a good sign that things are progressing?

Just popping up again to say some cravings can be based on real deficiencies. If you're generally craving dairy products and meat, then make sure you're having plenty of calcium, protein and iron sources in your diet (if you don't want to give in to the cravings for ethical reasons). Weirdly, chocolate craving is also a sign of iron deficiency. Obviously if you're craving something that is a source of "comfort" usually, that's more likely to be a psychological need than a bodily one.

I'd be interested to know, people who are craving meat, have you had your blood test results and has anyone looked at your iron levels? Iron deficiency is extremely common in pregnancy - the pregnancy tablets that have iron in are often not well absorbed - particularly if they also have calcium in as calcium blocks iron absorption. If iron levels are normal then try to increase your protein intake (beans, peas, pulses, lentils, tofu, soya products and Quorn products are all good sources as well as more traditional dairy and meat). It might help take the edge off the cravings.

Oh, and feel free to tell me to go away with my unsolicited advice if I'm sounding too preachy - I want to be helpful but I know with MS and cravings it's much much easier to say these things than do them! Grin

mrsAndeke · 26/04/2020 15:24

I have some Quorn products that I just can't eat, if anyone would like them, (based in northolt happy to give social distancing) I was pescatarian since January but my midwife suggested that I do back to mean for iron and other nutrients as I didn't really understand the diet enough to make sure I was getting everything I needed!

ACatCalledLola · 26/04/2020 15:48

@Anothercliche I’ve been craving milk and dairylea. I don’t usually have milk although have fortified alternatives but I’ve been drinking it a lot to satisfy the cravings. I had assumed I was lacking calcium.

Anothercliche · 26/04/2020 16:15

@ACatCalledLola yeah that's just the kind of thing I'm talking about. Some surprising sources of calcium: cannellini beans, sesame seeds (so tahini is also rich in calcium, which is used to make hummus), whole almonds, leafy greens like kale and bok choi, tofu (it's usually fortified), and figs. Not that I personally want to eat any of those things right now when cheese on toast would also do the job Wink

katsnmouse · 26/04/2020 17:11

@ACatCalledLola can i join the facebook group too?

ACatCalledLola · 26/04/2020 17:17

Pm me your email @katsnmouse and I’ll add you.

Rolly123 · 26/04/2020 17:18

Milk has always been my favourite drink (I am such a child!) but I actually can't get enough of the stuff at the moment.

Just logged on here and everyone is talking about food. Is anyone else suddenly ravenously hungry??? All of today I've just been wanting to eat... have kept it fairly healthy but it feels like like nothing will hit the right spot. Having steak this eve (rare to eat red meat for me) and hoping that might sort it out a bit.

Have also had loads more energy today - house is cleaner than it's been since January, and have been gardening as well. The energy makes me feel a bit worried about the baby. Either I'm moving into second trimester or it's gone...

Glendaruel · 26/04/2020 18:09

Ice cream is my vice, but all this talk of McDonald's is making me miss it!!
