5 weeks Pregnant

Hi all,

I am only 5 weeks pregnant (due 24th of July) with baby number 2! All went well last pregnancy (appart from horrific morning sickness from 6 - 23 weeks)

I have seen a few old threads with Ladies asking this question but would be nice to have some reassurance from other Mums to be on how terrifying the wait to 12 weeks is!

I'm so scared something goes wrong every time I go to the loo I'm checking for blood and any pains in my abdomen i feel I'm convinced something bad is happening 😭 x

It really has flown in! So exciting! Judt wish it was under better circumstances. Who would of thought we would be having pandemic babies! No I went at 39weeks with my first but I just have a feeling I will go over this time. Oh that is not long at all. 8 weeks then a few weeks your yourself before the baby arrives treasure it lol xx

I know... could never have predicted this situation! It's crazy! I know its quite early but I was wondering what kind of bags to take to the hospital. Did you have one for you and and one for baby? And what kind of bags? Just like a holdall or a small case? I've been thinking a lot about this 😂 And also what did you take to labour in? With this situation theres so many thoughts going through my head its making me second guess loads! Xx

pottypotamus · 13/05/2020 08:06

Hello ladies, glad you're doing well during these crappy times.

I'm on annual leave now and start mat leave next week. I couldn't hack working from home full time and also watching my 2 dc.

@JackGordonsMummy I'm 30 weeks on Thursday too! I have my GTT this morning, although received a call telling me I'll only have one set of bloods taken and can leave, no hanging around for 2 hours! 😃

@hermionelodge I'm taking a cabin size case, one side will be everything for me and the other side for baby. In the past, I've just taken DH's travel backpack as my hospital bag with both mine and baby's things.

And both times, I took a long T shirt to labour in, first time it came off and I was just in bra. And second time, she came too quick to take anything off!

JackGordonsMummy · 13/05/2020 08:55

@hermionelodge are you in Scotland? Did you apply for the baby box? I took a cabin size case too... I packed for a few days just incase it did'nt go to plan and we had to stay in. We got out the next say so it wasn't needed thank goodness! I think I had
Maternity pads
Breast pads
paper/ disposable pants
2 night gowns
2 pairs of pyjamas
A going home outfit
A pack of briefs
Nursing bras so much more comfortable although I don't think I'm best feeding this time around.
Nipple cream (mine are so sore already)
Shower toiletries
Size 1 Nappies
Water wipes
A blanket
Tiny baby and first size (incase baby is smaller or larger than expected)
vests
Scratch mittens
baby grows
A tiny hat
Going home outfit as it's the summer I doubt they will need a snow suit lol.

I also have my expert midwife spritz for bits apparently it's a god send after giving birth especially if you have stitches.

Oh @pottypotamus
I forgot we are the same due date wonder who will go first!! Did you go early with your second? I've heard they are usually alot fasting at coming out... here's hoping haha! I am definitely anxious about giving birth again. Last time seems such a blur. Enjoy your annual leave I'm off too looking after DS although working would be a rest lol! I bet you feel the same especially with 2 DC! Xxx

@hermionelodge JackGordonsmummy's list is pretty much what I took in too. I also took a 6 pack of Aptamil newborn milk that come with sterilised teats (so no having to mess around with sterilising bottles). Just in case I had issues breast feeding.

@JackGordonsMummy I was induced both times, so don't actually know when I'd have gone naturally. It wouldn't have been before due date anyway. Established labour for me 2nd time round was only 35 mins! So fingers crossed, it's straightforward this time round too!

hermionelodge · 13/05/2020 09:42

@pottypotamus @JackGordonsMummy thank you both! That's so helpful. I was thinking I needed two bags then worrying how I would manage everything if it was just me having to go in in the beginning, or leaving and having to meet my partner outside the hospital! Cabin case sounds much more mabageable! My baby is currently measuring big which is slightly worrying so I've bought some newborn and upto 1 month. Oh yes I got that too and the peri prep to reduce tearing, who knows if it will work but I will I try anything haha. I have applied for the baby box, I'm excited to get it! Looks amazing and so much stuff available. Ah yes I had heard of those bottles, will definitely get a pack too just in case.

I can imagine having to juggle lockdown with little ones and trying to work would be so stressful! Difficult enough just with lockdown.

Wow, 35 minutes!! That's amazing haha.

I'm at the stage where I'm itching to get everything ready but I also want to wait a bit so I have lots to do when I finish work. Seems so soon but so far all at the same time! Xx

JackGordonsMummy · 13/05/2020 09:57

35 mins? That is amazing I really hope for a fast labour like that! I was in from Halloween 2017 and gave birth at 4.17am on the 2nd of Nov. I got a sweap at 39 weeks because of reduced movement and they discovered I was already 1cm. The contractions started after the sweap and I stayed in hospital as I had group B strep they had to put me on IV antibiotics. I was hoping to get tested again after 37 weeks as I'd prefer not to take the antibiotics if o don't need them. I think it gave my DS colic. However all the private places are closed due to covid and the NHS aren't offering a test. I really struggled with breastfeeding DS I stopped after 6 days he wasn't getting enough milk he was starving. We later found out he had a tongue tie which didn't help so I think I'm just going to bottle feed this time from the get go. I know I will probably change my mind when she is here because it's such a lovely bonding experience but I will take those bottles you suggested with me too! X

JackGordonsMummy · 13/05/2020 10:02

@hermionelodge I got the peri prep your bits too I really do hope it works the reviews on it are amazing! The baby box has lots of stuff you will need for the hospital bag like the Maternity pads, breast pads etc so wait until it arrives before you buy!

I am the same I don't want to have nothing left to organise the last few weeks. O am waiting on her sleepy head arriving I didn't have one with DS but heard they are amazing. Then I'm stopping buying stuff for a few weeks. I really do need to get her clothes. I've got lots of hats bows etc... I was hoping to be able to go shopping for it but looks like its going to have to be online. Xx

OP posts:
hermionelodge · 14/05/2020 07:32

@JackGordonsMummy that's a good point about the box, I never thought or that! I had the pads etc on my list so will hang off for now.

Yeah we are going to get a sleephead too, I wasnt going to bother due to the price of them but everyone raves about them! Aww bows are so cute! How lovely! If I have a wee girl she will definitely be getting all the little accessories! I know, i was holding off hoping we would be able to go to the shops but not looking likely. Although I dont want to buy too much as it will all just be neutral. We do still need to get some vests/hats/blankets. The trouble with online is you have to get on quite quick in the morning as by afternoon/evening everything in small sizes is sold out! It took me ages to find the plain white sleepsuits in newborn and 1 month! Xx

pottypotamus · 14/05/2020 09:56

Glad you managed to get some essentials @hermionelodge
It is a lot harder than just being able to pop in to mothercare.

@JackGordonsMummy
Yes I was told because it was second time around my body just knew what to do. They examined me at 8am and I was 4cm on the labour ward, so they wheel-chaired me down to delivery as quick as. And next thing I know I'm being denied an epidural because the baby's head is coming! Shock
At 08:34 my beautiful baby girl was born.

But first time like you, I was admitted for induction on a Wednesday and had my son after 2 hours of pushing and assistance from the doctor on the Sunday at 2pm. He just didn't want to come out!

WeeScottishWife · 22/05/2020 08:53

How is everyone doing? I'm 30+1 now and everything is starting to feel quite close!

pottypotamus · 22/05/2020 09:34

Hi @WeeScottishWife, it all starts getting a bit real once you hit 30 weeks doesn't it! On the home-straight! I'm 31+1 and had a growth scan yesterday. They weren't happy with the growth of baby as she's dropped from 15th to 5th centile in estimated weight so they want to see me for a growth scan every 2 weeks now.

I feel like I'll be in and out of appointments every week now because midwife appts will be every other week.

I'm expecting consultants to want to induce me earlier than 40 weeks, so will get a move on with preparing hospital bag and cleaning the house etc.

How are you doing?

JackGordonsMummy · 22/05/2020 09:43

Hey @weeScottishwife I am 31+1 today it's only 63 days till I'm due! I've got a countdown calculator on lol. I'm pretty much organised although not packed a hospital bag yet. How are you getting on? I'm so nervous I couldn't sleep last night thinking about going into labour x

OP posts:
JackGordonsMummy · 22/05/2020 09:46

Aww @pottypotamus how did the growth scan go? My first pregnancy my DS dropped centile but went back up by the 2nd growth scan hopefully all goes well! That's crazy to think you will have your baby girl in less than 9 weeks then! Hope you are well x

OP posts:
pottypotamus · 22/05/2020 12:46

Thanks @JackGordonsMummy
I know, it'll be here before we know it!!
Everything else was fine, it was mainly the abdominal circumference that was on the smaller size which overall brought the estimated Fetal weight down. I'm not too concerned about having a little baby, it's just they keep banging on about placenta failure, it's worrying me a little.

My goal for this weekend is to pack my hospital bag!! 😃

JackGordonsMummy · 22/05/2020 12:52

@pottypotamus they don't half like to scare you! Jeeezo! Well they are keeping a close eye on you so I'm sure all will be well ❤ that's good idea doing it this weekend. I think I need to order a new case had a look at mine and it's all scrapped from Rome last year x

JackGordonsMummy · 25/05/2020 14:27

Hey!
I had my midwife app this morning. Looks like my iron tablets aren't working the midwife basically called me a liar saying she doesn't think I've been taking them! But I have been taking them religiously 3 times a day since I got them back in the beginning of April. Anyway she took more blood if its still so low I need to get an IV drip iron transfusion. I'm so dizzy and tired and unwell like all the time hopefully it helps.

Has anyone else experienced this or the fact rhe tablets aren't improving their iron count? X

OP posts:
pottypotamus · 25/05/2020 14:35

Hi @JackGordonsMummy
I had this in my previous pregnancy, what a cheeky cow to imply you're lying!

In my case, I was taking ferrous fumarate which wasn't helping me at all, so I switched to ferrous gluconate which brought my Hb levels up so that the midwives were happier.

I've also heard iron in liquid form is easier at being absorbed. So things like Floradix and Spatone. I think some Doc May prescribe it too because it can be pricey.

JackGordonsMummy · 25/05/2020 14:43

@pottypotamus its ferrous fumarate I've been taking the 210mg.

I called my Dr after my appointment to speak with him over the phone as it really upset me her saying the onyleay this would happen is if I wasn't taken them when I have been! Grrrr! Anyway he said we need to wait on the bloods she took coming back in a few days.

Sorry for TMI but he asked about my poo I told him it was black and he said that means my body is absorbing it so goodness knows why it's not helping or improving my count. Thank you for getting back to me hope you are well d

OP posts:
JackGordonsMummy · 25/05/2020 14:44

*saying this would only happen

OP posts:
pottypotamus · 25/05/2020 16:15

@JackGordonsMummy
Yes my poos are very dark with the iron supplements too! Your body absorbs what it needs and the extra iron is excreted and makes poos darker.

I've been taking ferrous gluconate for about 12 weeks now and had some bloods done at 30 weeks. I'm hoping as I haven't heard from the doctors that my haemoglobin is at an acceptable level, so hopefully the irons tabs are working.

It doesn't help midwives being rude esp when we are at our most hormonal and emotional. I hope your levels go up in your bloods.

JackGordonsMummy · 04/06/2020 12:05

Hi everyone that's me 33 weeks today 7 weeks to go... it is flying in considering we are locked in haha! I need to get my hospital bag packed I will face asda with a face mask today to get new pjs and night gowns for the hospital for everything else I think! How are you all x

OP posts:
WeeScottishWife · 05/06/2020 08:52

I'm ordering bedding for the cot today, which feels exciting! Next step after that is to start gathering bits for my hospital bag.

I saw the midwife earlier this week & it looked like baby had grown a lot more than expected, so crossing fingers that it's not gestational diabetes, and things even out at the next check up.

hermionelodge · 06/06/2020 10:07

The time really is flying by isn't it! I have 4 weeks left of work and the countdown really is on! I'm waiting for my baby box to arrive which should be next week, then I will sit and make a list of what I need for my hospital bag and start gathering bits.

I'm definitely struggling this trimester, quite sore and feel sick and dizzy quite a lot. Had to get my random blood sugar done again as they were low at my 28 week appt so just waiting for those results back. I was meant to have a second growth scan at 32 weeks but they have pushed it to 34 now, I was measuring ahead too so fingers crossed baby has evened out! It's getting real now having to think about the actual birth part... unfortunately 3 people around me have had their first babies in the last month and all labours were pretty awful so not filling me with confidence! X

JackGordonsMummy · 06/06/2020 11:50

@WeeScottishWife hope everything checks out ok for you keep us updated!

@hermionelodge my baby box came on sunday! So exciting makes it so real! I have been feeling pretty much the same as you in a lot of pain and really dizzy. My baby is still lying breech hopefully head down by 36 weeks! My DS was head down pretty early so I wasn't as uncomfortable as I am this time!

Try not to worry about labour. I had a pretty easy birth last time compared to some of the horror stories I've heard however I'm hoping the same goes for this time. I'm not looking forward to it but at the same time I can't wait to finally see my baby. The pain all stops as soon as they are out. Just take whatever pain relief you can. I had morphine but it had been in my system for 4 hrs as I was waiting on the epidural but it was too late so effectively I did it with gad and air. It is a wonderful all be it painful experience try not to let others stories put you off x
