I just went to the toilet, wiped myself and there was bright red blood on the loo paper Sad I had an eight week scan yesterday and everything was positive!! My period wouldn’t be due for another five days ordinarily. Absolutely panicking and no idea what to do - can anyone help?

Don't panic. I bled with 2 out of my 3 pregnancies and all was fine. Try to relax and see if it stops. Are you in any pain? No pain is a very good sign.

tacosplease · 21/09/2019 20:45

No, I’m not in pain. Just absolutely terrified. Do I just need to wait and see what happens? I have my first midwife appointment on Monday morning at my local surgery. I just can’t believe this is happening the day after my scan Sad

Does anyone know how I can tell if it’s a miscarriage at this point? Fearing the worst Sad

I went to A&E with very heavy bright red blood at 9 weeks with my first. Everything was fine and she's 15 months now. Bleeding doesn't mean miscarriage. If there's no pain with it, then don't panic for now and go to appt Monday or a&e if the bleeding doesn't stop

Joopy · 21/09/2019 21:38

This happened to me at 10 weeks, a tiny amount of red blood and it was fine. The best thing to do is put a pad on just in case, try to keep busy and not worry about it, talk to the midwife on Monday.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 21/09/2019 21:40

Was it an internal scan? They might have irritated something and that’s what’s bleeding. Hoping all is okay for you X

tacosplease · 21/09/2019 21:57

Thanks for the reassurance. I don’t actually have any pads in the house (I’ve always used tampons!) I’m in bed but not sure I’ll sleep tonight. I’m just counting down the hours until I see the midwife on Monday.

It was an external scan so that can’t be the cause unfortunately. I wish it was!

I was bleeding at 11 weeks.

Baby is now 7 months old. Please don't panic.

Missbdhfc · 21/09/2019 22:21

Happened to me at 12 weeks. I'm now 34 weeks and touch wood, all is well. It might be to do with cervix or position of the placenta

tacosplease · 21/09/2019 22:56

The thing is I had a scan yesterday and it sounded like everything was in the right place. I was even listening to the baby’s heartbeat! I’m just praying the bleeding has stopped by the morning...

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 21/09/2019 23:10

Ok calm down if you possibly can. A heartbeat was a really good sign and a little bit of bright red blood doesn't change that. Rest, fluids and wait and see is all that can be suggested. Chances are everything is still fine.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 21/09/2019 23:15

I had a fairly scary bleed at 9 weeks. Convinced myself it was all over. EPU scanned me on 3 days later and all was absolutely fine. I'm currently 30 weeks and he's just grand so far. They couldn't see any reason for the bleed and the sonographer said that once they've seen a heartbeat you're chances are much better. Easier said than done but try not to panic. The fact that you've had no pain is a good sign. When I did have a MC a few years ago I had a lot of cramping and clots.

tacosplease · 22/09/2019 03:38

Thank you. I just got up to go to the loo and there’s still some light bleeding.

A few hours before it started we told DH’s immediate family about the pregnancy as we had felt so reassured after the eight week scan. I really wish we hadn’t now.

I’m just hoping that when I see the midwife on Monday she will be willing to book me another scan - do you think she will and if so, how long does it normally take to get an appointment?

I had scary bleeding from 12-19 weeks but baby was fine. Hope you are ok.

coastergirl · 22/09/2019 03:58

I had bleeding until about 10/11 weeks in my first pregnancy. Had a couple of scans at the EPU. He's just started school at 4.5 and drives me crazy on a daily basis! I remember seeing a poster on the wall when we were waiting for one of those scans, about miscarriage rates at certain gestations once you've seen a heartbeat. Chances are pretty good for you. I had my second little boy 13 weeks ago and had a similar experience. Some people just do bleed during pregnancy. If it helps at all, I had a miscarriage in between my two boys. Once the bleeding started, it never stopped or slowed down. It started out light and got heavier and was confirmed with blood tests. I hope you have a good outcome.

gonewiththerain · 22/09/2019 04:00

Try not to stress as there’s not much you can do now other than try to sleep. I bled during pregnancy for weeks on and off it was heamatoma (sp) something. It was just a bit of blood now and then but very worrying every time.
Find out how you access the epu in your area and then arrange to be scanned on Monday. Some are direct access, others via gp. Here it’s via gp and I explained to the receptionist and the gp phoned me back and booked an appointment at the epu.
How quickly you get an appointment depends on how busy they are, it should be within a few days. I got one the next day.
I have also had a miscarriage and that went from a little blood to a lot of blood and severe cramping very quickly.
Try not to worry bleeding in pregnancy is very common.

soontobemummyof3 · 22/09/2019 04:33

I had bleeding in my previous pregnancy, bright red, clots, it was absolutely terrifying, I was around 7 weeks and I thought the worst, I had one bleed, and then another a couple of days later whilst waiting for an early scan, it was so so scary and I spent that week whilst I waited for my scan basically just crying. The midwife I spoke to said to me that bleeding in early pregnancy is very common but not normal, any bleeding should be reported, but bright red to brown, clots no clots, cramps / no cramps are all common in early pregnancy. I've just had my twins 3 weeks ago, the bleed for me was not a sign of miscarriage and just one of those things ! Good luck OP, the fact you've had a positive scan is a good sign x.

Peachee · 22/09/2019 05:28

I bled thick red blood on 3 occasions in the first couple of months. I'm now 28 weeks and everything is and was absolutely fine. The cervix can be a little bit tender at this stage so can get irritated easily. Also lots of blood is rushing to that area of your body in early pregnancy. See if you can contact early pregnancy unit or your midwife.

DandyLyon · 22/09/2019 05:49

I had heavy bright red bleeding at 13 weeks. Everything was fine. They said it was so common. I was sure I was miscarrying because that's what you assume when you're bleeding! But they found no cause and it didn't happen again for the rest of the pregnancy (though they said it might). Bleeding doesn't necessarily mean something bad is happening. I hope everything goes well for you OP Thanks

Landlubber2019 · 22/09/2019 06:00

Flowers fingers crossed, I found my miscarriages very painful so I hope you are comfortable and this is a blip x

Jent13c · 22/09/2019 06:08

Did they see anything in your 8 week scan at all? Mine was private and the sonographer spotted a haematoma and noted it on the sheet in a bit of a scrawl and didnt tell me. I was pretty horrified at 10 weeks when I passed a lot of fresh red blood as in all over the bathroom floor and I passed clots too. I went to EPU and it had been the haematoma and the baby was kicking away quite happily. I would contact your EPU, mine were happy to do a scan right away for me. Sorry you are going through this...its pretty traumatising.

tacosplease · 22/09/2019 08:41

My EPU is closed until tomorrow, but it says that if you have bleeding and/or pain over the weekend you should go to the emergency department. Is that A&E? Do you think it’s worth me doing that or should I wait until my appointment with the midwife tomorrow morning? I just went to the loo and there’s still light bleeding (though a bit less than yesterday I think?), but I’m not in pain.

BellyButton85 · 22/09/2019 08:44

I also had bleeding at 9 weeks and our beautiful little one is 3 weeks old now and perfect. There was no explanation for it, just one of those things. All will be fine I'm sure 😊

BellyButton85 · 22/09/2019 08:48

Also when I bled it was about 1am and I'd had a scan just days before. I had an outpatient maternity phone number on the front of my maternity file and I called them. I didn't tell them I'd had a scan just days before incase they just brushed me off so when I called they booked me for a scan the next day. When the sonographer looked at my details she was like oh I'm surprised they allowed you a scan when you only had one days ago...hence the reason I didn't tell them and just let her noticed when I was on the sonographers bed. I presume they'd have let me go on my not-so merry way and just said hope for the best if I'd have said over the phone about my previous scan
Best of luck

The cervix can be a little bit tender at this stage so can get irritated easily.

Thanks. I was a bit constipated yesterday and am hoping that could be something to do with it - although I didn’t start bleeding until about five hours after I went to the loo.
