I just went to the toilet, wiped myself and there was bright red blood on the loo paper Sad I had an eight week scan yesterday and everything was positive!! My period wouldn’t be due for another five days ordinarily. Absolutely panicking and no idea what to do - can anyone help?

Try not to panic, I bled throughout my pregnancy and I've just dropped my ds off at uni x

starflake · 22/09/2019 08:58

I had bleeding on 2 out of 4 pregnancies. I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant after having a bleed at 6 weeks. Had a scan at EPU at 7 weeks and turns out it was a subchoronic hematoma that caused the bleed and had already started to shrink & repair itself.

tacosplease · 22/09/2019 09:19

I didn't tell them I'd had a scan just days before incase they just brushed me off

Do you think I should not tell the midwife about my scan on Friday?

My nearest EPU is referral only but there’s another local hospital where it’s walk-ins on a first come, first served basis. I could just go there if I don’t get a referral.

As others have said bleeding in pregnancy is common. The placenta is forming and it burrows into the wall of the uterus which can cause cramping and bleeding in early pregnancy so try not to panic. When I've suffered miscarriage bleeding it was after the foetus had stopped forming (like weeks before) so you had a scan yesterday so be assured somewhat by this. My 11 year old now was a nightmare pregnancy as I had a massive bleed at 12 weeks that continued albeit slowing til a final stop around 5 weeks later - I was in pieces over that but it was all fine and she's a dream, didn't cause any
Damage or issue

Your midwife will help reassure you tomorrow - have an easy day, try to watch telly or take your mind away somewhere else
Good luck!

In my experience lovely, my local maternity unit has been great but I just knew with scans being so tight for time as they are that they wouldn't give me another one which in my eyes was the only way to truly see that my baby was okay. Just don't mention your latest scan unless they ask. Bleeding is more common than you think and majority of the time means absolutely nothing. Lots of hugs

Ginmonkey84 · 22/09/2019 09:52

I bled with all my pregnancy’s in the ones that didn’t make it I knew as it was quite painful. So no pain is a really good thing. As one of the other ladies said the placenta is forming right now and that’s a lot of blood vessels at work sometimes you do bleed with it. Hoping it starts to ease off for you x

Thanks again for the replies. I’m going to struggle to get through today - I’m just counting down the hours until I can have another scan. Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long. I will update when I can.

I had some bleeding, and abdominal scans set it off every time! 12 weeks tomorrow now. 🤞 for you!

keepingbees · 22/09/2019 14:32

I bled the day after my 12 weeks scan and my midwife wasn't concerned she said they have to press down quite hard doing the scan and it can dislodge some blood.
I also bled early in my next pregnancy and again no one was concerned, doctor said bleeding is considered normal in early pregnancy and only a problem if there's pain or it's heavy with clots.
I know you're going to worry but try not to stress too much. The fact you had a viable pregnancy with heartbeat seen just days ago is very positive.

tacosplease · 22/09/2019 17:04

Oh, that’s good to know - I thought it was just the internal scans that could set it off!

I still have the light bleeding when going to the loo, but it seems to have turned from red to brown now...

I'm sure you'll be OK op! Everything crossed for you, keep calm.

brookelopez · 22/09/2019 17:52

I had a huge bleed and massive clots about 4 weeks ago. I was 12 weeks. went to my emergency gynae/pregnancy unit and the baby was absolutely fine. I had no pain at all during the bleeds. before the bleed I had brown spotting for 2 days, then for another 3 weeks after it happened. all seems OK at the minute.

I have no advice other than hoping my experience settles your nerves slightly. I hope everything is ok for you and the baby.

BeanBag7 · 22/09/2019 17:54

Change from red to brown and lighter is a good sign, because it means the blood is old rather than fresh. With a miscarriage the bleeding would get heavier not lighter.

tacosplease · 23/09/2019 13:42

Quick update - I just had my first meeting with my midwife, who is lovely but wasn’t that reassuring about the bleeding! She said I should have called A&E over the weekend, but I didn’t think it was serious enough - and I presumed they wouldn’t be able to give me a scan in A&E anyway, which is my main concern. The baby was in the right place according to the scan I had on Friday, so I know it’s not an ectopic pregnancy.

My local hospital’s early pregnancy unit requires a GP referral and I might not get an appointment for a few days, but my next-nearest hospital does walk-ins without referral and opens again tomorrow morning.

Do you have to live in the hospital’s catchment area to access the walk-in EPU services or can anyone go? I’m hoping it’s the latter as I’m planning on going down first thing tomorrow...

The bleeding is still light, only happens when I go to the loo and it’s now a pinky brown colour. I’m still not having any cramps or pains.

Can you get a private scan just to set your mind at rest?

tacosplease · 23/09/2019 14:41

I rang the Fetal Medicine Centre and they said they recommend going to hospital when someone is bleeding. Looks like I’ll have to wait it out until tomorrow.

Ring your GP, say it is an emergency as you are bleeding and need to go to the EPU. You might not even need an appt you might just be able to pick up the referral slip,I have done that.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 23/09/2019 14:57

Or ring the EPU and ask ho to access the service.

tacosplease · 23/09/2019 17:47

I just went down to another EPU with an afternoon walk-in service (St Thomas's in Lambeth). The EPU wasn't offering any more scans today and there was a four-hour wait to see a nurse. I didn't think there was any point in not having a scan so decided to leave it.

I'll try the walk-in at my second closest hospital tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work, I'll have to book a scan via a referral from my GP, which could mean I'm not seen for a few more days.

Is it standard in London to have such long wait times at the EPUs? To be fair I did turn up at around 3pm, so quite late in the day. I'll be arriving at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

tacosplease · 23/09/2019 17:49

On a more positive note, the last three times I've been to the loo there's been no bleeding - so I'm really hoping that's the end of it. I think it's still worth getting checked out though just to put my mind at rest.

Anything in London takes a long time unless you go private. Sorry you are having a scary time. Chances are you will be fine 🤞 for you and little one ❤️

BusyDoingNothingx · 23/09/2019 17:53

I had a big bleed at 12 weeks which was bright red. I booked a private scan for that evening and thankfully all was fine. She said it was just one of those things. Is a private scan an option for you? Good luck OP, fingers crossed for you x

tacosplease · 23/09/2019 17:56

@BusyDoingNothingx I phoned the Fetal Medicine Centre this morning but they said they normally advise anyone who is bleeding to go into hospital unfortunately, as hospitals are better equipped if there are any complications. I'm just praying I get into the EPU tomorrow morning!

@tacosplease just a few days ago I had cramping and bright red bleeding exactly like a period then turned into brown blood with bits of clots, I went to A+E in case it was something more serious like ectopic! Waited ages and wanted to walk out as I knew it would be a miscarriage with all the bright red blood and cramps! Had a scan booked the next day and saw baby and heartbeat, was still bleeding bright red blood! Doctor said sometime there is no reason for the bleeding, could be cervical erosion or some times unexplained! Bleeding doesn't always mean a miscarriage so do not worry for now! If the pain becomes unbearable or the bleeding gets heavier, go to A+E. Let us know how you get on xx
