Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

i must be ignorant too as i like Konor and Konnor, who cares what other people think, my dd is called Leonie and i can't get personalised items off the shelf, i have to order them-that was the whole point of not having a Kommon name!

Uki · 07/07/2007 11:57

THE TREND at the moment is to spell names differently, all kids will be spelling their names from now on and they learn early.

The other day at the park i was chatting with 2 kids one called Katie and another called Zack

(at least that's how I'd spell them) although as they told me their names they also spelt them CATEY and ZAK.

that's 2 examples in a sea of millions IYKWIM

LadyEvenstar.... just spell it with a K, although i do like the double nn

Uki, I think I am settled on 2 n's now lol at least I got my way on the K with dp lol

oh by the way, i'd probably go with 1 N, as i had to pay 50p extra to get dd's door plaque done the other day because she had 6 letters instead of 5, but hey, i'm a cheap skate

DoubleBluff · 07/07/2007 12:08

I don't like 'unusual ' spellings. If you like the name just give the name as it is.
Georgia not Jorja
Benjamin not Benjamyn
My Dh is martyn ' with a y', everyone gets it wrong.

edam · 07/07/2007 12:10

Karl is a genuinely alternative spelling, though, I think - German? Whereas Konor is just made up. Admittedly some Americans got there before you but they do have a habit of coming up with Krazee spellings of ordinary names.

Sorry but the K will give the impression that you can't spell and can't look things up, either, or couldn't be bothered.

I have it the other way round, my name is spelt correctly but most people use the boy's name spelling even though it is only ever used as a girl's name these days. Spend my life telling people it's XXXX not XXX. Very irritating.

edam · 07/07/2007 12:11

AND it's a bit insulting to Irish people, really, to take an Irish name despite not being Irish and spell it wrong. If you want to take a name and mis-spell it, use an English one, since we are living in England.

unknownrebelbang · 07/07/2007 12:15

Princesspowersparkle, I'm a Vikki, rather than Vicky/Vickie or whatever other variation and much as I like it, it's a pita at times, because everyone spells it wrong.

And it is Vikki, not Victoria, but apparently it's naff lol.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 12:16

oh please insulting to the irish....not even going there

Some names look right spelt incorrectly. Konnor does not.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2007 12:18

And if you don't want people to rip your name choice to shreds, don't post on Mumsnet asking for opinions, we're notoriously harsh

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 12:18

SD, I like it though..... a lot of names don't look right if they are not spelt the usual way...doesn't make the person who named the child wrong..again it is down to personal choice i think

OP posts:
TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 12:19

lmao SD, so i have been told

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/07/2007 12:21

Look on the bright side, if you can handle Mumsnet opinions you'll be able to handle Real Life ones...

NKF · 07/07/2007 12:22

LadyEvenstar - were you surprised by the responses? Once you've named your baby, nobody will say anything. It's just at the thinking stage and if asked, people comment.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 12:26

NKF, I was never going to change it from K anyway, it was only whether 1 or 2 N's.

SD, ohh I think I can handle myself lmao had plenty of experience dealing with peoples opinions lol

OP posts:
NKF · 07/07/2007 12:26

No, I understand that. But were you surprised that so many people didn't like the alternative spelling?

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 12:31

If i am 100% honest, no but i wasn't bothered by that. I guess I can be stubborn when i have made my mind up. But as i have said many times each to their own...... Originally i wanted to call him Vaughn but changed my mind to Konnor

I'm finding this whole thread hilariously insular. It takes it for granted the op's ds will spend the rest of his life in England...

My parents gave me a very ordinary name for the country I was born in. Unfortunately I left that country as a teenager and have spent the rest of my life spelling my name and having it drasically mispronounced. For all you fans of John and Peter, they would have this problem in just about any non-english speaking country in the world.

fwiw, in most latin countries they would tend to spell it with one n rather than two.

JeremyVile · 07/07/2007 12:48

Which latin countries would they be then?

ib · 07/07/2007 12:53

Countries where the language is Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese, I think. Definitely Spanish, not 100% sure about the rest.

Sarahjct · 07/07/2007 12:54

That's the funniest defence I've heard so far! I know we're fairly mobile these days but surely it's going with the majority to assume a person born in the UK will stay there rather than go elsewhere as most of us do stay here.

And quite what that's got to do with anything I'm not quite sure. The OP asked for opinions and she got them. It looks daft with a 'k' no matter how many n's there are. And, as it's a made up name it'll look daft whatever country he ends up in. Unlike Karl which is a legitimate spelling in Germany etc, Konnor is only a legitimate spelling in the US and only since 2003...her call.

So many people name their children for themselves and not for the child. Shame.

JeremyVile · 07/07/2007 13:01

I'll have to take your word for that as i have never come across the name Connor, whatever the spelling,in Spain at all.

If indeed it is spelt that way in Spain then perhaps that would be because the of the pronunciation, as the empahasis wouls be on the second o rather than on the nn.
