Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

now VAUGHN or VAUGHAN I like

bookwormmum · 07/07/2007 13:15

I read an author once who complained that his name didn't translate into Italian very well and he used to automatically spell it out - he was called Tim .

If you take into account how different names sound in different countries, then you'd never name anyone as it's probably impossible to find one name that fits all. I worked with a girl once who was born in South Africa (she only came into England as a teenager) and we could spell her name but as for saying it...!

ib · 07/07/2007 13:20

I did mean it would be spelt like that because of the pronunciation. The emphasis would not be on the second o unless there was an accent on it.

JeremyVile · 07/07/2007 13:23

The point is, its not really a name used in Spain is it?
And if somone there has used it as a 'different' name for their child, then a Spanish person would only ever pronounce it that way - accent or not.

TutterJane · 07/07/2007 13:25

it may be spelled konnor, somewheer, by some people

but most will assume tis a wacky re-spelling

which imo is Not Good

if you must, then Connor

Oblomov · 07/07/2007 13:33

Some people are so selfish and love bringing misery to their children. oH well, so longs as YOU'RE happy with it.

wheresthehamster · 07/07/2007 13:34

Haven't read all the posts so apologies if I am repeating but if you want to spell it with a K then you need a different spelling to the C version like Konar or Konnar.

houseofhormones · 07/07/2007 13:42

I have an name that was originally a boys name but is now mainly a girls name. It is spelt how girls spell it today and I am always having to spell it out or correct the spelling, it does get annoying

My son has a name that has 2 spellings (valid ones, very old name) It would appear his way is not the norm and everything is addressed wrongly

Why mess with perfectly good names?

edam · 07/07/2007 13:54

Me too, hoh (re girl's name). Irritating, isn't it?

houseofhormones · 07/07/2007 14:39

very! wouldn't mind but it is quite mainstream now, you'd think people would have worked it out by now

roisin · 07/07/2007 14:49

I used to think my dislike of 'unique' names, and unusual spellings was irrational and pure prejudice.

But it really does seem to reveal a great deal about you and your parenting. IME at school the most charming and pleasant children are called traditional names like John, and Sarah, Rachel, and Eva; and the top sets are also full of Michaels, Louises, and Heathers.

The nightmare sets, and some of the most challenging children, have the least traditional names, and the quirkiest spellings. (Sorry, can't give examples in case of identification).

Did you know that given a list of 200 names of unknown students, experienced teachers can identify the top set and bottom set with astonishing accuracy!

My siblings all have very standard names, except the youngest, his name is spelt with a K where it should be a C. Why my mother chose to put a K we will never understand, but it has blighted him for years at school, and only now, at 16 is he getting used to it. Please use Connor

tribpot · 07/07/2007 14:56

Blimey, roisin, I was privately thinking Konnor (or Konor) sounded rather chavvy but I wasn't going to go as far as to suggest either (a) TLE wasn't a good parent because she can't (or rather, won't) spell or (b) baby Konnor/Konor was a bit thick.

Misdee · 07/07/2007 15:07

roisin, where would nicoles, laurens, serenas be?

and what about Dixie?

hehehe.

Karl is an acceptable name, i persoanlly know two Karls and two Carls.

But Konnor, looks wrong, and Konor even more so.

there are loads of Connors at dd1+2 school as well.

well for a start Konnor is not born yet and as far as spelling goes I can spell the name Connor but I like it spelt Konnor. simple as that. And what a load of rubbish that the spelling of a name determines the childs intelligence.

Just on the trendy Irish name topic, my sister's friend here in Canada just named her child Aislinn (pronounced ASH-linn) but she thinks you're to say it AZ-linn!

skerriesmum · 07/07/2007 15:10

I mean, even Ashlynn would be fine because then people know how to say it.

heavy · 07/07/2007 15:35

cannot believe how harsh some people are being over this! the question was one n or two? bet you wish you'd never asked love!

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 15:37

Heavy it just saddens me that some people have to get personal. As you rightly stated the OP was 1 or 2 N's.... I guess it shows peoples ignorance.....oh no thats me that is ignorant for spelling a name slightly different...oh hum

Roisin .

"Did you know that given a list of 200 names of unknown students, experienced teachers can identify the top set and bottom set with astonishing accuracy!"

I really hope that this was written tongue in cheek as otherwise anyone with a slightly unusual name (or spelling of that name thereof) is doomed before they even start.... what happens when more than one child in a class possesses the same name? Are they automatically bracketed together???!

Twinklemegan · 07/07/2007 17:58

Ay joost thart ayed spel thins diffarant todae. (only kidding)

Seriously though, I'd go for just one n as then at least it might look like a foreign version and not just like you can't spell .

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 18:06

Sorry, I have a Connor, people want to spell it Conor, Coner, Conner. If you have it with a K it will be harder for your son

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 18:09

roisin FWIW my Connor is in the top set at school!!
