Hiya peeps,

DP and I have once again had a discussion over spelling of LO's name...when he gets here lol.

We have settled on Konor Michal, Konor is my way of spelling it but dp says if it being spelt with a K then we should spell it Konnor, I say Konor.

Michal he won't even attempt to judge me on as it was my dads name....pronounced Mehal it is Polish.

Which way would you choose? I prefer Konor and dp Konnor...

I taught a Dylon once!

unknownrebelbang · 07/07/2007 09:56

Ah, xposted.

FlamingTomatoes · 07/07/2007 09:57

Dylon! PMSL!

ProjectIcarus · 07/07/2007 09:58

i wouldn't tbh.

my Dh had to pick up a prescription of vit k for dd (not registered yet) so the gp spelt the name her way.

the entire pharmacy was waiting for him coming in and snickering as the prescription was for

feebee.

Dh was mortified and despite instantly going"no no it's spelt Phoebe" they still judged and laughed.

He won't go in there now

cece · 07/07/2007 09:58

I know - how I said it Dylan all year I don't know!

ChippyMinton · 07/07/2007 10:01

Have only read the first few posts - TLE your own name is unusual, hence the need to correct spelling/pronunciation. But Connor is a popular name, spelling it differently doesn't make it unusual, or make it sound any different. Why not pick a truly original name, if you want you son to stand out from the crowd, rather than spend his life correcting people?

Agree that a middle name doesn't matter at all, as it's generally not used by people outside the family.

bookwormmum · 07/07/2007 10:03

Icarus - my dd is also a Phoebe and the amount of people who start off 'F I.....' before they see me glaring at them.

Obviously they never watched Friends (although she wasn't named for that) .

ProjectIcarus · 07/07/2007 10:06

playgroup spelt it Pheobe.

numpties.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 10:08

Chippy, I just like names that are spelt differently thats all.....But Konor and Konnor are varied spellings of the name Connor.

moopymoo · 07/07/2007 10:09

there are 4 connors in ds playgroup - no idea how they are spelt, just that half the class turns round when it is called! that sounds a bit judgemental , hey ho...i am very old- fashioned when it comes to names. each to his own , but often by trying not to follow the herd, you infact end up doing so.

harleyd · 07/07/2007 10:12

i like konor, spell it how you like!

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 10:14

Harley....THANKS XXXX

I don't usually get involved with things like this - each to his own and all that. But I'll make an exception here!

I've got an ordinary name and you'd be amazed at how often it gets misspellt. It makes you feel totally unimportant, as if people can't be bothered to remember and is totally different to having an unusual name that needs to be spellt.

All it makes me think of it those awful cab firms called Krazy Kars and Kwik Kabs. shudder

Apart from that, your son will be known because of his dodgy name and not because of the smashing boy he'll undoubtedly be. Let him make his own mark on the world, don't do it for him through something as naff as what looks like an illiterate spelling. Sorry, I know I'm offending you but I really don't mean to. I just think it cheapens what is a lovely name and you're doing it for yourself, not for him.

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 10:43

Sarah but it IS a variation of the name Connor....just like Karl is one of Carl....so how is it a dodgy name????????

OP posts:
Sarahjct · 07/07/2007 10:48

But you're using Americans as a source. No offence to any Americans here but they are notorious for strange spellings and 'unusual' names - how many girls called Brandi do you know in the UK? But you'll find loads there.

Conor is an Irish name and I doubt you'll find anyone in Ireland spelling it with a K.

It's not personal, I feel the same about Shevaun (Siobhan) and Neve (Niamh). If you're going to use an Irish name, spell it as it was intended. It's a lovely name but I agree with others. If you really want to make his stand out, give him an unusual name, not an unusual spelling.

I'm sorry, I know you must feel like everyone's flaming you and I don't think that's anyone's intention. It's your decision and he'll be a smasher whatever you decide.

JeremyVile · 07/07/2007 10:54

If you're just going to make it up as you go along then why not have a mixture of the two, KCONNNOR?
or CKONNNOR
or something completely different like KAUGHNNEARRE?

TheLadyEvenstar · 07/07/2007 10:57

jeremy because I am not making it up......

policywonk · 07/07/2007 10:57

Oooh, Jeremy, that looks like authentically crazy Gaelic spelling.

StarryStarryNight · 07/07/2007 10:59

Hi,

I have an unusual name, the other problem aside from having to spell it all the time, is that even though I spell it, officials still get it wrong. You would not believe the amount of trouble I have had with both Inland Revenue, Boots Opticians, doctors office as they have filed me under the wrong place. And to have to wait, either at a counter somewhere, or on the phone, while they go through all the possible ways your name could be spelt is simply irritating.

But worse is when Inland Revenue, or Tax credits, your bank, or even Oyster Card renewal wont talk to you because THEY do not have the name down the way YOU spell it! (Unless you already know how it is misspelt, so you spell it the way THEY spell it when you talk to them, now I have gone to the trouble of writing down each time I discover how some company or official have misspelt my name so I know for the future, bother that too!) This means having to go there in person with passport, proof of addresse, etc, or writing letters with copies of the above. It is exasperating to say the least!

It is actually i big hindrance and inconvenient for the child that has to once become a grown up and do grown up activities lumbered by such a name. To deliberatly name a child with a different spelling just "to be different" is a little inconsiderate.

If you want to be different, give him an unusual name, not just a normal name with a different spelling.

JeremyVile · 07/07/2007 10:59

you're not making it up?

What have i missed?

Princesspowersparkle · 07/07/2007 11:01

TLE- don't worry if people don't like it, at the end of the day its yours and your DH choice.
As for people always spelling it wrong- my name is Sarah and so a very common name, and I always get people asking if its got an 'h' or not, so its not just unusual names that get spelt wrong (at times I've even had it spelt with an 'h' in the middle- WHAT???!!)
At the end of the day all your son has to say when spelling his name is 'Its Konnor with a K' not exactly difficult. What about people called Vicky/ Vickie? Its not an unusual name and the spelling are both common so they'd have to spell it out all the time too.
Anyway- in answer to your original question I like 2 Ns.

isn't the rule that you want to add Dr, Prof and finally President to your child's name? President Konor?
Konor sounds like someone who would make an excellent rap star... but why not call him Conor and let him change it if he does go into the music industry.
i think that Michal, by the way, is a blindingly good name with your Polish heritage. to a british ear, konor sounds made-up, even if it isn't. Michal pron. Mehal sounds foreign and cool i think. and dishy...

Hulababy · 07/07/2007 11:06

I prefer Connor of all the spellings.

If you must have a K, prefer Konnor. I still think it just looks like it have been spelt wrong though, sorry.

Michael is different as it is a family name, and a Polish real name.

But your baby, your choice.
