What about Rueben a friends ds is called that, a little similar to Rufus, maybe without the connotation.

Or why don't you change a letter of two

suzywong · 28/06/2007 01:34

The middle names will have to be Chaka and Khan.
Just to amuse me

CristinaTheAstonishing · 28/06/2007 06:43

Not a dog's name at all, although DS (who had speech problems at the time) did call his friend "woof-woof". But that was his problem and now he can say it right.

Imawurzel · 28/06/2007 07:00

DH nephew, which i suppose is now my nephew is called rufus.he has dark hair.
it's different. Wouldn't choose it myself.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 28/06/2007 07:04

I think Rufus and dark hair is OK. Wasn't it Russel for red-haired?

Imawurzel · 28/06/2007 07:06

thats what you call someone with leaves on their head

theprecious · 28/06/2007 14:18

thanks all, I am not sure this has helped our decision making process but it gave me a good laugh.

I think we'll see what he looks like when he comes out.

Milo is another choice and that's being roundly abused on another thread!

Fido
Rex
Rufus
Rover

Spot the odd one out.

Ha - can't can you aye.

Now spot the odd one out
Fido
Rex
Rufus
Rover
Simon

See the difference!

theprecious · 28/06/2007 14:32

I can't call my child Simon!

(exbf's name).

Rufus is not at doggy as Fido or Rover.

How about Theodore?

I think defending it has made it want to call him it more.

This is deffinitely a proper name (and is on our shortlist if FCH Jr is a boy!)

FCH · 28/06/2007 14:36

As is Milo - perhaps I'd better start hoping for a girl!

doughnuts · 28/06/2007 14:37

I like Rufus Wainwright - so good name.

ThomCat · 28/06/2007 14:39

I wasn't serious about the name Simon btw!
It wqs just a jokey way of highlighting that I THINK RUFUS IS A RANK NAME AND BETTER SUITED TO A DOG!

binkleandflip · 28/06/2007 14:40

My dog was called Rufus...we called him Roo for short..

Judy7 · 28/06/2007 14:50

DS1 is called Kit - but no one has said that's a cat name. Although my mother still hasn't got over it.

norkmaiden · 29/06/2007 00:07

Thomcat - rank? Jaysus! Words fails me.

People have no farkin imagination. So Rufus conceivably sounds like woofwoof with poor pronounciation - better name the kid Jack then, right?

Precious it's a fine name, don't you bloody well be bullied into naming your son something you think is second-best. FFS.

norkmaiden · 29/06/2007 00:08

Kit is fabulous btw!

zookeeper · 29/06/2007 00:13

i know three Rufuses - they are all dogs. It does seem very doggy to me for that reason

Habbibu · 29/06/2007 00:14

Rufus Sewell lent me his CD player once. Thought I'd shamelessly namedrop...

fingerwoman · 29/06/2007 00:15

well rufus is on my list of names for the next baby, therefore it must be lovely.

duchesse · 29/06/2007 00:28

My nephew is called Rufus. He has red hair as well (Rufus the Red, ancient king of Britain or something. no?) I think it's a lovely name.

Anyway, my advice is don't go around telling people what you want to call your child, because almost certainly someone will have something negative to say about almost any suggestion. And life would be really dull if we were all called Mary, John Elizabeth and David.

duchesse · 29/06/2007 00:30

Also I think that people tend to give their dogs people names more these days. That doesn't however make any person name given to a name a dog's name, just a name worn by a dog. Just because someone knows a dog named something, don't mean it's a dog's name.

fingerwoman · 29/06/2007 00:33

I seem to know a lot of dogs called Molly. that's more of a "dog name" than Rufus

jennifersofia · 29/06/2007 00:38

No, but do you want to name your child after a singer with a really annoying voice?

doughnuts · 29/06/2007 16:26

Kit is great - my cousin's eldest is called that- he seems to get called Kit Kat and Kit Bag though !
