@Bettyhop congrats on that scan! Beautiful. Curious to know what other people think are essentials as well.

Teachermummy83 · 05/01/2019 19:06

@Bettyhop there is a thread somewhere about what’s necessary and never used - either in Pregnancy or ante-natal clubs? It has very different suggestions but also links to lists by a Mothercare etc. I’d planned to print it and score out the unnecessaries? There is just so much suggested, we won’t have room for the baby amongst it all!!!

Teachermummy83 · 05/01/2019 19:07

Oh, and congratulations on your scan, it’s a gorgeous picture!

EltzBee · 05/01/2019 19:54

@CrystalBlaze going to break out the emergency paracetamol.

Got dreadful cramping now as well, warming up a wheat bag :( praying everything is ok with bean.

Crossfitgirl · 05/01/2019 21:55

@sunshine1987 doing NCT for both friends and learning. I've heard it can create a vital support network. My friend said they looked after each others babies for an hour or two if they needed to do something, and was a godsend to have that support when she was going to job interviews and just needed someone to take them for a bit in the middle of the day. I also like having face to face, practical advice to prepare me for the birth and afterwards, and same for DH. Its not the same just reading from a book, I'm a better practical learner. The breastfeeding session included too... As I'm really worried about breastfeeding. Yeah for me it's worth it. It's totally personal though, it isn't gonna be right for everyone and you don't need all that stuff, you can get all the info you need online and may already have good support networks. So yeah it's your decision really!

@eltzbee I had headaches too. I found that when I felt crap, I didn't want to drink nor did I feel thirsty at all. Forcing some fluids down often made me feel better. It made it harder not feeling thirsty as I didn't realise I was dehydrated, but actually once I had a sip of some cordial I was always suddenly gagging for more, just couldn't stomach plain water so have to have cordial. Also a cool pack on the back of your neck and forehead... And lots of rest!

Crossfitgirl · 05/01/2019 22:00

@bettyhop top of my list is car seat, pram, cot or moses basket or whatever they sleep in to start with (I'm quite worryingly oblivious right now) ermm and that's it for the big stuff!
Is there tonnes more I've missed?
Obviously bottles and nappies and clothes and stuff. Is anyone getting a proper baby bath? I told DH we could just bathe them in the sink or washing up bowl 😂 not sure that would work though haha.

MrsEG · 06/01/2019 06:34

@bettyhop @crossfitgirl I asked my sister this, as she has a 7 month old. Told her to send me a list of the essentials only... who knew they needed so much stuff! She told me the below is the stuff she couldn’t live without. One thing she stressed was don’t get loads of clothes or toys - she said from 7 months on she had so so so SO many clothes/toys given to her from friends she was just overwhelmed with the stuff!!

  • Cot and nursery furniture
  • Car seat
  • Pram
  • Sleepsuits
  • Blankets, hat and socks (she had her baby at the end of May before the heatwave but still needed these!)
  • Changing mat
  • Nappies and nappy bin
  • Nursing bra and breast pads
  • Bottles/teats and breast pump, and steriliser
  • muslin squares and bibs
  • Moses basket
  • Baby bath
  • Baby monitor with a screen
  • Sling/baby carrier
  • Baby change bag (she swore by the backpack versions)
  • Water wipes
  • Baby thermometer
  • Nail scissors

Happy shopping!!!

MrsEG · 06/01/2019 06:35

@EltzBee Oh hun I really hope you’re okay. Crack on with the paracetamol and don’t think twice about calling your EPU if the pain is bad, they are wonderful and excellent at putting your concerns at ease.

ChaosMoon · 06/01/2019 08:04

Morning lovely ladies.
We did a big baby shop yesterday (or baby it just felt that way because some of it was so bulky...)
I spent lots of time looking at lists of "essentials" beforehand. This is what we've got so far.
Car seat
Cot (well, it's a Chico next to me)
Pram
2 small packs of nappies in size newborn and the next one up (planning to switch to reusable once home)
One sleep suit and a pack of vests (I want to buy more but I know DM has already started doing!)
A baby sleeping bag (is that what they're called?)
Oh and DM bought a charitable travel bath, though I'm sure a sink would be fine. It's what people used for 100s of years.

A friend has invited us round to raid her old baby stuff. Even things like breast pumps can be reused. We'll probably just replace the nipple attachment. I'm going to see what she has before buying anything else, but tbh, I think we have everything that's truly essential for the first day or two.

Oh and we also got a load of toiletries that I'll need post partum, but that's a whole other list!

ChaosMoon · 06/01/2019 08:05

Oh and we got water wipes too.
We all know I've forgotten things right? Stupid baby brain.

MrsEG · 06/01/2019 08:15

Hey @ChaosMoon I’ve posted the list my sister gave to me just above your post but sounds like you’re covered, especially with a friend letting you raid their stuff too - the dream!

ChaosMoon · 06/01/2019 08:19

I think it's going to save us a fortune! We may still have to buy the baby monitor, but by the sound of it everything else could be covered.

I'm also really lucky that some of my mummy friends have shared their research about prams etc, which has made things a lot easier.

CrystalBlaze · 06/01/2019 09:38

@Chaos we've also got a next to me! Are you planning on getting a cot as well or just having that for now?

I've also got a travel system and a couple of bits of clothes but that's it. Slightly overwhelmed by how much shopping there is to do!

@Eltzbee how are you feeling today?

ChaosMoon · 06/01/2019 09:59

Tell me about it @CrystalBlaze! I had a minor melt down in boots yesterday when DH went off list. I just didn't have the mental capacity to think of anything else! Fortunately it was short lived.

We have a really beautiful crib that's been in the family for a couple of generations, so I'll keep that downstairs at first. (New mattress, of course.) I won't get a proper crib until they're able to sit up though. I'm guessing it'll be needed at around 6 months.

sunshine1987 · 06/01/2019 10:06

@eltzbee hope you’re ok xx

Teachermummy83 · 06/01/2019 10:48

For those of us getting irganised, I’ve just noticed that Aldi have their baby event coming up - seems to have lots of bargains, but is it decent stuff or cheap rubbish? Love a bargain, especially with so much to get. I was planning an online order (store is 3 hours away!) so wondered about quality before I order as Returning will be a pest! Any recommendations on
things to grab or things to avoid?

CrystalBlaze · 06/01/2019 11:00

That looks good @Teachermummy! No idea on what is best to get though. Feel absolutely clueless really.

I didn't join a Facebook group when we were on the TTC thread as I don't really use it but was curious as to whereabouts everyone is from? I'm just south of London in commuter paradise but am an exiled northerner Smile

mrsof20118 · 06/01/2019 13:10

@CrystalBlaze south west here

So much for feeling better. Was exhausted last night and felt sick when I went to bed. Been heaving all day today (not been sick but been close). Maybe a lot of change going on around 10/11 weeks

EltzBee · 06/01/2019 13:56

@sunshine1987 @CrystalBlaze feeling a lot bettter today, the headache and cramps have, thankfully, gone for now. Feel a bit delicate, had DH bring me some crackers in bed this morning with a cup of tea. Sorry for being a panicker yesterday! It's all so scary isn't it, so glad I've got you ladies to talk to.

@MrsEG I will need to find out where the nearest EPU is, I guess that would be the JR as well. I've got my GP appointment tomorrow, I'll mention to her about the cramping as well. I'm still non the wiser what to expect tomorrow, I assume they'll add me to a list for the midwife appointment.

@CrystalBlaze I'm South Oxfordshire now, but I'm a Wiltshire girl at heart. We only moved here 18months ago to be closer to work on the train (prime commuter territory here too). I don't have any family nearby and only a couple friends here, so think we'll look at doing one of the courses to meet people at a similar stage closer to the time (fingers crossed).

What's the first things everyone noticed about their body changing? For me it's been the utter exhaustion, but I've also noticed my boobs feel heavy and bigger. I was surprised to notice any change in them so early!

ChaosMoon · 06/01/2019 14:41

So glad you're feeling better @EltzBee. And that your DH is looking after you. I hope that headache stays away, it sounded horrible.

It was my boobs first too. Although now I've lost track of all the changes!

I'm SW London @CrystalBlaze. Haven't done FB in years either, but wondering if I should start again as I keep being recommended different groups.

MrsLBear · 06/01/2019 16:30

I'm considering nct too for both meeting people and also to learn more first hand. I'm quite fortunate as both our parents live very close and also we have plenty of friends we class as family. Two of our close friends are also trying so hopefully they be in the same boat as us.

@EltzBee I have found my boobs are so so sore. I'm still very early but I feel like they will be first to change. I've yet to experience the exhaustion but I've heard it's madness how tired you can feel. Not sure how I'm going to cope some days at work when I'm not home until late and have been out the house since 7am.

MrsLBear · 06/01/2019 16:31

I'm still on holiday at the moment (in South Africa) and my cousin was telling me they do the first scan here at 8 weeks! I'm so tempted to get a private one.

MrsEG · 06/01/2019 17:16

@EltzBee Definitely worth finding out where your EPU is. They’re just wonderful for peace of mind.
My spotting carried on yesterday but at one point it was blood, and I panicked and went straight in. Of course by the time I got there it was gone and had stopped but they were wonderful with me, did a full exam and took blood. My HCG levels look okay and they’re having me back tomorrow for another blood test to check it’s rising as it should be. But without the EPU I’d have just been sat at home panicking. FX bloods all look good tomorrow. Staying positive! Refusing to get worried/anxious; it’ll do me no good. No blood since, either. All the nurses say it can just be one of those things, but it’ll be nice to have black and white confirmation tomorrow.

I’m in Manchester! Some excellent and some not so excellent maternity units here but I get three to choose from!

Crossfitgirl · 06/01/2019 19:44

Omg, you girls are so organised... I feel completely useless and have no idea even where to start! I haven't even asked anyone with kids already what I might need or for clues! I feel like I need to do some reading up on stuff! Like I knew car seats and cots and stuff... I have no idea about anything else!
I'm gonna have to call upon friends and family to see what they recommend too and maybe see if we get offered anything hehe.

Thanks for the list @mrsEg and glad all is OK with you, @eltzbee glad you're being looked after :-)

Thread is moving a bit faster now hey!

Also I'm from West Yorkshire whoever was asking!

MrsC87 · 06/01/2019 20:12

Evening ladies, checking in to say I have my 12 week scan tomo. I have no reason to worry but I am, don't think I'll sleep tonight!!
Sickness has eased but tiredness kicked back in. Been in bed for last 2 days with a cold and no energy!

I'm from Worcestershire.
Also I have started to look at things to buy.
Really want a snuzpod for bedroom and Moses basket downstairs.
Don't know where to start with prams. Will probably start looking in the shops once tomorrow is over.

Hope everyone is doing okay 😘😘
