My little girl is 3 weeks and I'm also breastfeeding. There is no particular routine and it's different every day. Nights she feeds 3 to 4 hours, while days it varies 1.5 to 3 hours. I try to wait at least that 1.5 hours between feeds. The feeds last from 30 to 45 min. Sometimes I have even to unlatch her as she falls asleep and does nothing. What about other breastfeeding mums?

Loosemoose28 · 02/05/2018 04:39

At 0030 this morning my little lady arrived in the pool. Weighing in 8lb 11oz bang on 42 weeks.

Cramped all day. In denial until 7ish thinking something happening.

Decided I was overwhelmed and just about coping so went in at 1030 not break with contractions really.

Was in the pool by 1120pm.

Friend looking after me said stop holding it in Grin just give a good push will you... oh look hair. Hmm she was born half hour later. Small tear not needing sutures- on cloud 9 Flowers

Kirta · 02/05/2018 07:01

ilovesprouts · 02/05/2018 17:40

Still no grandson for me his mum is getting started off if he's not here by Sunday ☺️

HarryHarry · 02/05/2018 23:18

@Loosemoose28 Congratulations! We have our baby (2 weeks old today) at home for a couple of days before he goes back into hospital as they want to see how he copes. So far it's been tough - we spent last night lying awake listening to him breathing just to make sure he was OK. When he cries we're not sure if it's because he's in pain or if it's just normal. Also I am pretty much chained to the breast pump as they told me to do it every 2 hours without fail to establish a supply so my husband has to do everything for the baby. Don't know how I'm going to cope when he goes back to work!

amysaurus87 · 03/05/2018 10:00

Hi all, been off for a few days. Congrats on the new arrivals, hope you are enjoying newborn snuggles.

Been discharged from the community midwife as baby Joshua is above birth weight (this was Monday) so now just see the health visitor every 2 weeks.

I'm really struggling with breastfeeding, I'm convinced my supply has dried up or is at least drying up. Still getting wet and dirty nappies but he just never seems full, my nipples are in agony when he comes off the breast and I don't know how much longer I can carry on. I have a breast pump but I have no idea how often I should be using it, I'm going to visit one of the breastfeeding support groups tomorrow I just hope I can make it through today and tonight (baby Joshua is getting his BCG today)

The screaming from 11-4 continues, I've started to use infacol but I keep forgetting to give it to him before a feed. I think it might be because he is hungry, I feed him roughly every 3/4 hours during the day and he gets lots of sleep during the day as well. I try to feed him at night, but he's so agitated that I can't always get him to latch.

The lack of sleep is killing me and my hubby is now back at work so he needs to sleep, I'm just so overwhelmed by all of this and I have no idea what to do.

Kirta · 03/05/2018 10:11

Hi @amysaurus8
Don't know if this will help at all - I know everyone will have different views on it, but I express twice a day whilst I'm feeding on the other breast. I express at about 7.30am and 10.30am. 60-90mls each time. It works for me as I have much more milk at that time so it makes latching on easier and actually stopped my nipples from falling off I think!
One other thing that I was doing that I don't think was particularly helpful was pulling my boob back to check the latch every two seconds or to get him sucking again. This was only pulling my nipple out of his mouth ever so slightly, hence sore nipples again. The two pumps a day have helped. Also, I'm trying a very, very loose routine of keeping him awake at certain times by lots of playing and stimulation which has massively helped with the sleeping situation!

Loosemoose28 · 03/05/2018 10:16

AMY there is a thing called development leaps. Your doing great. You won’t be drying up and this is where we need to remember that new babies do just feed all the time regardless what our sleep deprivation says it is normal to feed feed feed (cluster feeding). Google development leaps too as they seem to feed more when having one.

I didnt sleep last night but mainly my own fault was watching her breath Confused
Xx

ilovesprouts · 03/05/2018 18:40

My sons girlfriend is getting induced tonight at 8 o'clock they said that's wen they will have a bed free ☺️

Bez9087 · 03/05/2018 23:10

Hope your meeting your grandchild soon @ilovesprouts

Yustynne · 03/05/2018 23:26

amysaurus I'm sure you're doing just fine. You said your baby is above birth weight so it means he is getting enough food. This is quite a good site how to increase milk supply if you want to: kellymom.com/hot-topics/low-supply/ To be honest, I'm not sure myself if my little one gets enough milk as she keeps crying straight after feeds. Regarding sore nipples, you are doing right going to breastfeeding support group. When I had cracked nipples, community midwife said my baby was latching incorrectly. She showed me a better latching technique. About sleep, if your baby sleeps all day long, then probably it is normal he will not sleep for some time at night. My little one does opposite: sleeps at night but then stays awake and cries all day long.
Kirta how do you stimulate your baby? I tried playing music, singing, holding in my arms or over the shoulder but nothing seems to stop her from crying.
Harry I hope you and your baby are fine.

kirta · 04/05/2018 10:23

yusty when we are trying to keep him awake in the day, he tends to be in his vest and in his bouncer/playmat. To be honest, we only try to keep him awake after 5pm so he will have a bath and big feed at 7pm and generally is down for the night bar 3 feeds at about 10.30pm, 1.30am, 4.30am and then up at 7am.
We do spend a while after feeds burping him and keeping him upright, as he was awake with some wind I think. As a disclaimer, I am aware I have a very placid baby! My daughter was almost identical.
Your LO will find her way soon. She won't be nocturnal forever (I know that's of little comfort now!)

forestftm · 04/05/2018 11:43

Hi all,

I'm a little late to the party on this one.

Had my little one 2 weeks ago.

Following a smooth pregnancy, had a difficult labour, several days in early labour, and then having to have assistance to deliver LO (suction, forceps and episiotomy), have not been able to breastfeed, but have been pumping, now topping up with formula, as finding it difficult/time consuming to feed and pump.

LO was born with quite a lot of trauma to the back of his head which made breastfeeding difficult and he is much happier having it from a bottle.

Physically and emotionally getting there, things are taking longer to heal than I thought.

AnnaMadden · 04/05/2018 12:35

Congratulations @LooseMoose...enjoy your newborn snuggles.

@Amy you won't be drying up hun. Fussing at the breast and cluster feeding is baby's way of putting their order in to up your supply...usually in preparation for a growth spurt or developmental leap. Go with it...settle down with snacks and a drink...It get easier. Sore nipples means poor latch so its good you're getting that looked at. In the meantime Google flipple technique to get a deeper latch. It'll be worth it x

kirta · 04/05/2018 13:02

Ooh I second the flipple!!

Strongarms27 · 04/05/2018 14:17

Hi all, congratulations to all new mummies!

Lyra had her harness off today so I've finally seen her toes, legs, chests and back! She's already kicking a lot and seems to be a little stunned by her new found freedom. We've not been able to establish breastfeeding at all so I went to a clinic yesterday where the tongue tie specialist nurse confirmed a slight tongue tie but said its affecting her quite badly. Despite bring referred by our HV two weeks ago, we've heard nothing so we've been referred again. It'll take 3-4 weeks though and theres no way I can carry on expressing that long, so we've booked in privately.

Hope your time with LO has been lovely harry

forestftm, I've been advised to pump only for 10-15 mins (double pump, hospital grade) so it's now a lot easier to manage. How long are you pumping for?

forestftm · 04/05/2018 14:43

@Strongarms27 I do 5 minutes per breast, as frequently as I can, some days are better than others due to appointments or LO etc

Strongarms27 · 04/05/2018 15:00

forestftm I know! Because we were at fracture clinic for three hours this morning, I haven't pumped since I got up. I worried the entire time I was there about my milk!
Are you taking fenugreek?

AnnaMadden · 04/05/2018 16:01

Be careful with fenugreek as it has been known to dry up supply in some women! I can highly recommend oats...I always have lots of milk on the days I eat oats!

amysaurus87 · 04/05/2018 18:33

So yesterday was a baaaaaad day. Joshua did not have his BCG as I forgot the red book and promptly broke down in the hospital, and told the midwives everything about how I've been feeling.

They have some support with breastfeeding, which has helped but I'm still in agony when feeding and his latch/positioning is fine (also told this by the breastfeeding specialist I saw this morning) so it looks like the issue is a tongue/liptie, just need to wait for a referral to get it corrected, though I'm not sure how much longer I can carry on, but I know if I stop breastfeeding I'll feel like I failed him, but it's getting to the point where I dread having to feed him

Strongarms27 · 04/05/2018 18:43

Oh amysaurus87 I know how you feel. I feel like I've failed Lyra in so many ways already: her broken leg, the failure to establish breastfeeding, the lack of information about the tongue tie... But you haven't and will not fail Joshua. The fact you feel so strongly shows that. A fed baby is more a happy baby - how that happens is irrelevant.

Strongarms27 · 04/05/2018 18:44

Thanks for that AnnaMadden, I've only just started taking fenugreek, so I'll keep an eye on my supply. I'll eat plenty of oats too! I love porridge Smile
