I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Must wait 3 weeks till my nhs one

Anatidae · 11/03/2018 17:05

I’ve had three scans (one early private, one before they’d prescribe me ondansetron- she said she thought it might be twins) and the 12 week one.

Have felt pretty awful today. Nasty stabby round ligament (?) pains when I lift stuff and I can feel my hips going on top of the nausea. I’m a wreck.

Foodylicious · 11/03/2018 17:21

Sorry to hear that ana
Not necessarily related but I've pulled my back/side.
Still feel like I've got lots of pulled muscles from wretching and coughing (I sometimes find I can stave off a wretch with a controlled cough)

LucindaE · 11/03/2018 17:38

Anitidae I am sure you look lovely - a Goddess figure -not as you describe. Sorry to hear of appalling symptoms.
hotchocolate It's a shame you didn't get offered a scan. Ten weeks is often the worst bit for sufferers, particularly after several admissions like you have had, so take heart. No wonder you feel tired; moan away - that's what this thread is for. Gentle cyb er pats on offer from me for you and for all suffering badly. Great explanation on ketones from Bored. I too, had to laugh overMustang's joke over 'onsies'. I used to pee myself to the point where I became an expert at whipping off the knickers as the retching started - lucky I didn't forget and do that outside the house.
nails I think men could only cope with a day a fortnight - very gallant of all OH's who would like to change places.
Foodylicious Mother Hen is fine: I got a lovely mothers' day present, too. I hope everyone is having a bearable mothers' day evening...

My little boy just choked. Completely frightened the life out of us.

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 11/03/2018 18:56

Foody I had 4 private scans with dd! 3 were early pg when I wood suddenly have a couple of days where I felt ok and thought things were going wrong so would quickly book a private scan and one later on for gender scan. It really helped give me w bit of motivation as to why I felt so terrible, and, let’s face it, feeling so rough it’s nice to have something to look forward to.

Choc I hope the meds keep helping and you don’t end out in hospital again, will keep fingers crossed.

Step in the shower to sit on sounds genius, I’ll remember that!

I spent today delimeacaling the shower (it looks so much better now) and went for a jog yesterday. Tried to appreciate as much as possible that soon these could be impossibilities for ages.

Hot choc is he ok now? I remember choking on bacon as a child and my mum had to give me a huge back slap and it really scared me.

Anatidae · 11/03/2018 19:37

Ayay hotchoc is he OK? Are YOU Ok?

Ds has gagged a couple of times and my heart nearly stopped.

LucindaE · 11/03/2018 20:28

hotchocloate That is really frightening. Awful for you on to of everything else. What a day!

Hi he was ok soon after thank goodness but it was very very scary. He didn’t go blue or anything but it was a struggle to dislodge the bit of food that was stuck. I thought at one point I’d have to call an ambulance because we couldn’t seem to do it.

nailsathome · 12/03/2018 08:38

I'm glad he's ok now, it is very scary hotchoc

Lucinda* was your Mother's Day calm and peaceful?

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 12/03/2018 10:32

Hotchoc that must’ve been awful.

How is everyone this wet Monday?

I’m wishful thinking here. I may be 8 years older than last time I was pg but I’m a fair amount slimmer and a lot healthier in diet and physically than last time. Please tell me this could make a difference in how sick I get —I know it won’t and it’s only wishful thinking—

Boredoftryingusernames · 12/03/2018 11:16

Yule unfortunately the odds are that you get it again, but I have met 2 people lately that had severe HG in first pregnancies and we're fine in their 2nd ones, so it is not a given! One of them waited 8 years between pregnancies too. At least mentally you can prepare for this time. If you are in better physical shape I suppose that can only help (although a few people on here has e commented they have purposefully put on some weight pre-pregnancy as they have had HG several times and knew they would lose lots!).
Hotchocolate how are you today? Hope your little one is ok too, very scary.
Foodywell done for getting into work last week, not surprised it took it's toll. Hope you are ok today.
Nails hope you are feeling a bit better too.
Anatidae hope you aren't too sore, miserable to get other complications on top of HG!
Lucinda glad you had a lovely Mother's Day!

hotchocolate86 · 12/03/2018 11:48

Hi I’m feeling very green but I’ve managed to eat and my ketones are fine at the moment so I guess not too bad overall. I’m scared I’m going to be sick though as it was so horribly acidic last time. I’m very glad my little boy is ok. Thank you for all the good wishes for him. It wasn’t a fun experience.
yule I did read that there is some hope for HG not being as bad if you are in a healthier condition when you fall pregnant but I don’t know how likely that is.

Haneggsandchips · 12/03/2018 12:08

Hello,

I've just been signed off work with hypermesis and feeling quite down about it.

I find if I lie in bed all day I'm not really sick and the nausea is just about manageable but if I start trying to do anything it flares up and then I'm sick after everything I eat.

I'm only about 6.5weeks and doctor seemed surprised it had started so early. He also helpfully told me it was likely to be at its worst between 8 and 12 weeks, which is filling me with dread that it will get worse before it gets better. Is that everyone else's experience?

LucindaE · 12/03/2018 15:16

Haneggsandchips
Welcome What meds has the doctor put you on? Unfortunately, it is true that the first tri is the worst for most people. It is very boring lying still, but the best treatment is rest and anti emetics (and a good anti acid). Don't despair; it gets a lot better for almost everyone later on. Do invest in some kesostix from a chemists to check for the early stages of dehydration - the role of ketones is complicated, but these are a good way of checking that hospitals take seriously. Some liquids and foods that have helped. Ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, flat full sugar coke, Elderflower water, soda water, Lucoazade, fizzy orange, orange squash, orange juice, Dr Pepper, Robinsons fruit drinks, and sips of chocloate milkshake, maybe soya. Foods of a sort include cornflakes and mashed pototo, nibbles of chips and crisps, cuppa soup, slices of melon and mango, cheap ice cream and jelly.
A lot of people are able to get through the bad bit where they are mainly bed bound, if they can't face the printed word, through watching films, listening to audio books and the radio, and for my part - I suffered so long ago I wasnt on the inernet - I read 'War and Peace' and a lot of translations of Zola!

hotchololate Thank goodness for that. Much sympathy. It is very hard to keep calm in such circumstances. I didn't find the first aid course I went on wonderfully helpful about dealing with choking in babies and toddlers - though it may have improved thse days. Sorry you feel bad again. That wasn't a very long window of relief. To repeat myself, perhaps this is the worst bit.
Yule It does make sense that the healthier you are, the less devastating its effect on you. How badly you get it in pregnancies does seem to vary and not follow a pattern. I have known several women on here escape it, or escape getting it badly the second time.
MaryLou242 was one.
Bored and nails Thank you for Mother's Day good wishes. My daughter now being 23 and working in Manchester these days, I had a quiet one besides nice presents.

Lucinda can you add me to the list please - 4th September.
Han sorry you have had to join, the early weeks are really miserable. Rest really is one of the most helpful things. Hope Lucinda's great advice helps. Also worth looking on the Pregnancy Sickness Support website for great general advice including meds and stuff for partners/relatives. They are really lovely (and helpful) if you ever need to call for advice.

hotchocolate86 · 12/03/2018 18:28

Hi han sorry you’ve had to join this thread but hopefully you will find it a great source of support.

I’m glad you had a nice mother’s day lucinda. I hope everyone else did too.

I’m pleased to announce I’ve had a reasonably good afternoon with much less nausea. I think it’s partly because I was able to go to bed as my son had a nap so we had a couple of hours in bed today.

I truly don’t know how any of you are doing anything! I was bed bound and certainly housebound for almost all my pregnancy so just the fact there are some of you out and about and doing stuff is incredible to me. Hats off.

Han hello! I agree with Lucinda’s point about reading books etc. Every day for me was hard to get through and I spent my tine mostly lying in bed as any movement made it worse. I watched a lot of tv and played rubbish computer games to waste the time away until I could feel up to pottering around the house a little bit.

Foodylicious · 12/03/2018 19:17

han I was signed off last time from 6 -12 weeks and was only able to go back because I started meds at 11 weeks.

I was worse to start with this time but started meds about 3 weeks ago and am now not nearly as bad as I was last time at 10.5 weeks which is what I am now.

So I will be another one recommending medication early if you Can. It can stop it getting too severe.

I am knackered today. Been breathless on and off last couple of weeks but I have asthma and OH and LO have had coughs so put it down to that.
But today I am breathless sitting still and it's obvious when I talk so will be off to docs in the morning I think.
Inhalers haven't improved it .
Had this last year and a course of steroids sorted it in no time so fx!

Haneggsandchips · 12/03/2018 19:56

Thanks for all the welcome and advice. Doctor talked about medication but steered me away from it a bit as was saying how the trials aren't as large as with other drug trials, so we agreed to go with rest at the moment and then review medication in a couple of weeks. He also thought I'd be offered an early scan at my booking in appointment, which would be some small silver lining I guess.

I've most been lying in bed watching TV this afternoon. Struggling with reading which is annoying. Think a Netflix or Audible subscription will be in my not too distant future.

Hope you get the asthma under control Foody.

Oh and my EDD for the list is 1st November.

Boredoftryingusernames · 12/03/2018 20:44

Definitely worth reading about medication on the Pregnancy Sickness Support (PSS website) to reassure yourself Han. There are many options that are considered safe, it's just that nothing is 'licensed' as it is unethical to test on pregnant women. Many women have taken the various options so there is actually a lot of data. The first line drugs work best if taken before the vomiting gets too bad, so waiting until you get worse may not be the best thing if you are already really poorly. Maybe give the PSS people a call, discuss your symptoms and see what they say?

Foodylicious · 12/03/2018 21:03

Also han why did the Dr think you might get an early scan? I haven't heard of anyone getting an early scan on the nhs unless there are clinical worries.
Might be different in your area though

Natsku · 13/03/2018 07:54

Oh no Hotchocolate glad he's ok now but must have been terrifying! Choking is my biggest fear with small children, DD got a coin stuck in her throat when she was a toddler and her airway closed up when they removing it, was horrible :(

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. When I look at baby sleeping so peacefully and looking so sweet I almost think I could do this again so I need to check this thread to remind me not to!

Foodylicious · 13/03/2018 08:18

Well asthma is still pants so far at the walk in.
At least 16 people were already queing outside when I got her at 7.50 though!
Might be some time...
