I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hotchocolate at least the hell of a shower is over for you now! I remember on one of my worst days making myself shower and clean my teeth, and then having a really horrid retch and vomit that made me wet myself - back to square 1!
I am managing the showers this week though without vomiting after - keep positive, things will get better!

hotchocolate86 · 24/02/2018 13:13

I haven’t cleaned my teeth for two days Sad Just the thought of the toothpaste makes me heave. I can’t even tolerate my mouthwash as the mint flavour is too strong. I am hoping so hard that it doesn’t get any worse than this.

bitzy12 · 24/02/2018 13:19

@hotchocolate86 someone mentioned to me about using a child's toothpaste when a normal one is too much.
My daughter uses Sainsbury's own children's toothpaste, it's strawberry flavour I think. Not strong at all and I managed to feel a little bit fresher. Worth a try if you think you can manage it x

Boredoftryingusernames · 24/02/2018 13:43

My husband got me some children's mouth wash as no alcohol and much milder, helped just to have a rinse when I couldn't brush.

hotchocolate86 · 24/02/2018 15:24

Thank you bitzy. I just used my sons strawberry toothpaste and it was so much better. I still couldn’t brush for long but at least my teeth feel a bit better and my mouth is fresher. I will also try and get hold of a children’s mouthwash. Thank you for that suggestion bored.

Oh dear, about those weight losses! SleepyBadger I so agree with others, I am sure you said you had theee Hyperemesis pregnancies before, so why they are keeping you on weaker drugs is a puzzle. Expense, I suppose. Great advice from Bored. Poor you, though, having the same awful weight loss. I hope it eases a bit for both of you, asap. And poor hotchocloate, h alf a stone already. bitzy and hotchocloate It is so true about kids toothpaste, especially strawberry, being much more bearable. Plus a small, soft toothbrush.
Sometimes I used to give myself a mouth rinse of bicarb. of soda in water - I probably sholdn't have, as its salty - but it did help clean the teeth.
Somebodys Much sympathy over OH being so annoying and purposely - I can't help thinking - ineffectual about mundane tasks. It is amazing how many men, while quite good mechanically, become inept when asked to use a washing machine. Wink
Foodylicious Most people find it really is the only thing that helps, lying down, when at their worst. I hope things get a lot better soon, and you can indulge yourself and actually move about.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Congrats to Orange

Sleepy that is unacceptable, you must drag yourself back for more meds - horrible as it is to get dressed and leave the house.

I think (fx) that I've turned a corner, now at 16 weeks. I've gotten to this stage where I have, what I have personally dubbed 'digestion pains'. Do you veterans know what I mean? When you've eaten something, then immediately after you get stomach aches, and if you go lie down, you don't vomit. My mother thinks I'm insane when I say 'I'm not feeling so great, I'm digesting" but that's what it feels like to me, the stomach is working hard at something, and it only happens after I eat. Today I did not vomit once the whole day. That must be a record since the HG started. I ate a tin of sardines and some tomatoes, and I can hardly believe they stayed down! Of course this is only while on ondansetron, afraid to play around with the meds. My GP wants to wean me off, but the last time I tried I relapsed so badly.

hotchocolate86 · 25/02/2018 10:12

endora I’m so glad you are feeling a bit better. I hope it lasts for you. My hospital allowed me to stay on ondansetron for my whole pregnancy last time. You should definitely fight to stay on it if you don’t feel like you can come off it yet.

LucindaE · 25/02/2018 14:26

Endorra I join hotchocolate in my congratulations. Happy news.
hotchocloate I hope not to bad today, and everyone...

SleepyBadger · 25/02/2018 16:50

Bored - yes this is the 4th time I’ve experienced the horrors of HG. For the last 3 days I’ve barely been able to get out of bed other than crawl to the bathroom to vomit or retch in a heap on the floor. I asked my GP what the next steps would be if the cyclizine didn’t work and he just shrugged and said ‘nothing more we can do really, plus it’ll be over by 12 weeks you’ll be fine...’ 😡. If they don’t prescribe anything else or admit me for IV drugs and fluids I don’t know what will happen to me. I’m ashamed to say I’ve had a real low today and told my DH I didn’t think I could carry on. This baby is so loved and wanted but I’m feeling so weak. I know I need to be stronger or I’d never forgive myself x

Boredoftryingusernames · 25/02/2018 18:05

Oh Sleepy pleased don't be ashamed, it's just because of how utterly terrible HG makes you feel, with the added strain of worrying how it is affecting everyone else in the family while you are so incapacitated. It's completely normal to not be sure if you can carry on. You are amazing to have got through 3 HG pregnancies before, with some actual help (rather than what your GP told you last time....) you'll hopefully start feeling it is at least manageable again.
You really, really need better meds, and as you are vomiting so much they would work much better if they are injected to start. I'm sure I sound like a broken record, but if GP can't/won't help then go to hospital (or if there is any chance of someone taking you go tonight?).

LucindaE · 25/02/2018 18:08

SleepyBadger This is outrageous. Do phone Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 and they should be able to advise you how to get meds. Don't despair. Meanwhile, surely you must be dehydrated? You are the expert, but is your urine dark and skanty or your skin dry? Have you got any of the famous kesostix to hand? At this stage, it might be that you have to bypass this GP with this awful attitude, and go to A and E for fluids.

OP posts:
hotchocolate86 · 25/02/2018 18:08

Hi sleepy please try to get yourself to the hospital if your gp won’t help. It will certainly help you to get some fluids and iv mess inside you I think.

I think I will be back in the hospital tomorrow as my ketones are 2+ again and I’m feeling pretty rotten today. I’m hardly managing to drink anything.

Boredoftryingusernames · 25/02/2018 18:13

Hotchocolate sorry you are feeling rubbish again Sad. Hope they can sort you out with a med combination that helps more if you do have to go back in.

hotchocolate86 · 25/02/2018 18:14

I hope so although I’m not sure what else they can try. I’ve seen they might be able to up my dose of ondansetron so that might be an option. Thank you for the good wishes bored.

nailsathome · 25/02/2018 18:39

Sleepy it does sound as though you should be going straight to a and e. Drs seem to be very uneducated about hg.

Hot choc sorry you're still rough.

For those who have come out the other side, does it gradually fade or is it instant? For the last 2 days I've been a little less nauseous and indifferent to food rather than being actively repulsed by it. I'm not counting my chickens but could this be the beginning of the end? I'm 20 wks. Still having dreadful dizziness though.

hotchocolate86 · 25/02/2018 18:58

Hi nails in my last pregnancy I stopped being sick by about 12 weeks which was amazing. I had about 3 more weeks of exhaustion and bad nausea and then I just felt mildly nauseous until I gave birth. I never managed to come off the ondansetron though. If I stopped taking it or tried to cut down I’d start being sick again.

LucindaE · 25/02/2018 20:09

hotchocolate Really sorry you feel bad again. I hope they work something out.
nails Most sufferers start to feel quite a bit better between weeks 14-20 -and even the unlucky ones who suffer throughout never feel so bad as earlier, so that makes sense. Compared to those who have been on here before expecting twins, you have suffered for quite a long time - so hopefully the turn around will be soon.
SleepyBadger How are you?

Congratulations to orange. I am pleased that your sickness has gone now.

Anatidae · 26/02/2018 08:17

Poor sleepy - doctors like that need a good shake - very poor indeed.

I’ve got an appointment tomorrow and midwife also rang me to say I’m quite anaemic and need to start on iron. In a way I’m feeling good about that because it’s a defined ‘thing’ and I can treat it.
It also explains why I’m having palpitations and can’t get up the stairs without panting and feeling dizzy! I’d assumed it was just general knackeredness. Iron levels were tip top last time so I hadn’t considered it.

Has anyone felt much better after getting iron levels up? Is a liquid better to keep down than a tablet?

Foodylicious · 26/02/2018 08:33

I should think the tablets Anatidae
The iron solution if foul.

Foodylicious · 26/02/2018 08:35

Make sure you mention the coffee ground vomit Anatidae, it could be the cause of your anaemia

Anatidae · 26/02/2018 08:42

Yes I certainly will :)

Mw has suggested a liquid I think - I’ll talk it through with the doc tomorrow. There has t been any repeat of the old blood in the vomit and on the phone they didn’t seem too concerned at a one off - I have been having nose bleeds at night (it’s dry as the Sahara here!)

I’ll see what they say. I do hope they will sign me off another couple of weeks - I don’t feel up to work at all. Fingers crossed

Natsku · 26/02/2018 08:58

Do they have Maltofer chewable iron there? That's what I took when I had trouble getting the right dosage with the liquid one. Absorbs better than the tablets and stayed down just fine. The weird chocolate flavour wasn't nice but I just sucked on a pastille afterwards to get the taste out.
