25 weeks waters broken - help

Can’t believe I’m asking this on mumsnet but...am lying in a local hospital bed, waters have broken, not yet in labour but cervix open a bit...local hospital have been trying for 2 hrs to find me a bed in a neonatal unit...they have found one at St Thomas’s but waiting to hear whether there is a bed for me. They have told me I might then have to wait another 2 hrs for an ambulance to transfer me. Has anyone ever used a private ambulance service? Any advice as to what I should be asking for / demanding? I am conscious that I could go into labour at any minute and at that point it will be touch and go for the baby who will need a neonatal bed. They have given me steroids / antibiotics etc.

Thinking of you OP. Hope baby stays where he/she is for a bit longer Flowers

stabbyjoe · 12/11/2017 14:07

Good luck op it’s a tough position to be in

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 12/11/2017 14:09

Good luck OP, you should definitely have a read of the thread someone posted about the woman who's waters broke in America, it is a brilliant read with a very happy ending!

A friend of mine had a very premature baby and he's absolutely perfect...! (And the tallest 5 year old I've ever met!)

Have you asked about mag sulphate?

Ollivander84 · 12/11/2017 14:16

I helped deliver a baby over the phone that was 26 weeks and 1lb 8. I have a lovely card and some photos of him in hospital and after at home Smile
I was also prem, not by as much. Am now 5ft 10 Grin

I gave birth to my daughter at 29 weeks at Kings, four years ago, waters breaking at 28+5. She was 1.2kgs, in neonatal unit for 6 weeks and 6 days. She had a smooth ride in the NNU (in hindsight).

I wouldn’t walk too much if I were you, my DH was intent on getting me ‘fresh air’ and I am convinced it set things in motion.

One of the other posters mentioned expressing. The nurses will have you expressing soon enough after birth. Kellymom.com is a good resource about breastfeeding and expressing, but the lactation nurses are great, not sure if they’re still the same, Jude and Jude.

Get your husband to get some micro nappies and cotton discs (the flat make up ones, the cotton balls stick to the bottom), the nurses will ask you to get some for baby. My husband came back from Sainsbury’s with the newborn size but that’s too big, tell him to look out for micro nappies.

It will be a little while before you can dress your baby but, if you feel strongly about this, like I did, then make sure you do it first and Let them know otherwise there is the risk they’ll do it themselves like they did with me! They have a stash of small baby clothes btw in case you need some.

And if you are fed up with hospital food, there’s a great little cafe on Denmark Hill called Love Cafe, great for stocking up on healthy juices and tasty sandwiches (and great strong coffee).

I’ll think of you when I walk past, taking my healthy 29 weeker to Ruskin Park and if Dr Bhat is your neonatologist give him a big hug from me. X

Thank you everyone, there just seems so much to think about / not think about - is baby moving enough, what is my BP doing, have I got a temperature, are the Braxton hicks turning into contractions etc etc..think I need to try and get a really good nights sleep tonight if I can, although the evening still seems a long way off! Will definitely check out the café if / when I get out of here, am fantasising about a bath with a glass of wine and a seaview!

You must be going crazy with boredom and worry! Can you get DH to bring you some books. Might help pass some time. Definitely get him to bring you some proper food. Hospital food has no redeeming properties and will not sustain you (well it will but I'm sure the lack of nutrition in it makes people take longer to get better). DH brought me in porridge for breakfast and lots of vegetables for lunch. It helped so much.

Thinking of you Flowers

Another wave from here. You are doing really well. I’d second the staying put as long as pos. send dh out for food if peckish (there also used to be a Nando’s at clerkenwell green). If you have enough data downloading episodes of in our time by (saint) Melvyn Bragg tends to be my coping strategy to get through long hospital days and nights

Lily2007 · 12/11/2017 16:52

Glad to hear you are still there and not in labour. I would just try to rest as much as possible, doctors will be monitoring everything and other than rest isn't much you can do. They are amazing with prem babies so she'll/he'll be in good hands.

lolacola1977 · 13/11/2017 05:16

Just to update you all. Baby delivered at 3.14 today, a little boy...all looked as good as could be expected when he came out, we are just waiting now while the doctors work their magic...he cried a little bit, of hon can imagine a newborn lamb, and seemed to be trying to breathe a bit on his own. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers now as we have the long wait til we can see him and hope to goodnesss he is in reasonable shape...

Congratulations! The doctors will really work their amazing medical magic.

I don’t know if kings hospital are part of the ‘octopus for a preemie’ programme? If they are, have a look into the amazing benefits that they offer, if not, maybe try contacting octopus for a preemie and seeing if you can get one for your son. Flowers

minmooch · 13/11/2017 06:51
