25 weeks waters broken - help

Can’t believe I’m asking this on mumsnet but...am lying in a local hospital bed, waters have broken, not yet in labour but cervix open a bit...local hospital have been trying for 2 hrs to find me a bed in a neonatal unit...they have found one at St Thomas’s but waiting to hear whether there is a bed for me. They have told me I might then have to wait another 2 hrs for an ambulance to transfer me. Has anyone ever used a private ambulance service? Any advice as to what I should be asking for / demanding? I am conscious that I could go into labour at any minute and at that point it will be touch and go for the baby who will need a neonatal bed. They have given me steroids / antibiotics etc.

Good luck Lola Flowers

I recommend the old desert island disc podcasts with people like princess Margaret. That was my v long induction anyway...

INeedNewShoes · 12/11/2017 00:34

It makes such a difference having a nice fellow patient to chat with in hospital. It helped save my sanity anyway!

Good luck OP.

I hope you managed to have a decent nights sleep...Sending your more non labour thoughts and plenty of bed rest. I hope all is okay x

toopeoply · 12/11/2017 03:26

Thinking off you op. I had mine at 26.6 weeks. Waters went a couple days before. You are in the best place, they will do everything they can to keep you pregnant, but even if that doesn't work, the care that your tiny baby will recewill be first class Flowers

lolacola1977 · 12/11/2017 07:35

Still here but getting quite strong Brixton hicks so maybe today will be the day...trying so hard to distract myself and tell this baby to stay put! Just wondered, people who stayed in a long time after waters breaking, how much moving around (or not) did you do?

Good Luck Lola Flowers

My waters broke at 19 weeks and my cervix had funnelled, I stayed in hospital on bed rest for ten weeks to make it to 29 weeks.

Upside down for a time. I got up twice a week for a shower, other than that just to go to the loo but only after I had been in for two weeks and was more stable.

I wasn't in the UK at the time so my treatment was probably quite different.

Rachie1986 · 12/11/2017 07:46

How scary for you OP. Thinking of you and hoping baby stays put. Stay positive xx

GreyTree · 12/11/2017 07:55

Not been in your position OP so can only imagine how frightened you must feel. Sensing you 💐 and hugs x

Hi, I had a baby in Jan 2017 at 26+5 72 hours after my waters broke. I was going to have him at Chelsea and Westminster but was transferred to Queen Charlotte's. I am glad the baby is steroid mature as it makes a huge difference to outcome. Do ask about mag sulphate as well (reduces the risk of cerebral palsy). I am not going to pretend having an under 28 weeker is an easy ride but read up as much as you can so you are prepared. And once the baby is born, do consider expressing breast milk as soon as possible. In preemies it makes a big difference.

And don't be alarmed by that Guardian article. The stats on 26/27/28 weekers is a lot better today AND it sounds like the baby is a decent weight. 28 weeks and over 1 kg in weight really makes a big difference in outcome.

Finally my son was born at 26+5 weighing 961 gms. We had a smooth neonatal stay and he's 10 months old and causing havoc and meeting his milestones and exceeding them. So keep the faith!

LuchiMangsho · 12/11/2017 07:57

PS I was transferred because although ChelWest is a Level 3 unit they didn't have enough cots.

Xoticdreamz · 12/11/2017 07:59

Good luck , sounds like you are in the best place possible.

ladymelbourne1926 · 12/11/2017 08:05

Hi just wanted to send you good wishes and positive thoughts. I posted on here (under my old username) when in hospital with my ds2 who ended up being delivered at 24 weeks to the day, the support was a huge help to me, my ds1 was born also at 26 weeks. Both are now happy and healthy, currently eating breakfast.
You are in the best place.
Everyday counts and the fact you are made it this far is great, those steroids etc would have had a proper chance to reach your baby.
My ds2 had steroids, antibiotics and a mag drip on board and they made a huge difference to him, he actually had a smoother recovery than ds1.
The very best of luck x

I have an older child with asd so not much resting was possible i had to go to hospital 3 times a week for scans/trace and bloods to be taken. The good thing about waters is they constantly regenerate of course the downside is you constantly leak when moving worse when standing or sitting from lying. I once had to borrow trousers from bil as i didnt ran out and he had some in his gym bag.

lolacola1977 · 12/11/2017 09:07

That is all really encouraging, especially hearing of your children who are doing thinks like eating breakfast! I can’t imagine that at the moment...Braxton Hicks seem to have subsided, at least for the moment...25 + 4 today!

MsJolly · 12/11/2017 09:16

Keep going! Thinking of you x

lolacola1977 · 12/11/2017 11:27

Ok, after feeling positive I am now feeling v stressed and worried as Braxton Hicks coming back again...any positive stories about your children doing normal things after experiencing this, gratefully received! Also feel dreadful leaving my own kids and freaking out about the labour as haemorrhaged after an ectopic pregnancy last year...so....all in all, not quite so chipper today!

I’ve been there. 26+4 and my DT held in until 27+2. Life completely stops until they get home (due date for my DS, 2 weeks earlier if DD). Your DC is already bigger than my DD was (she was 825g at birth). My labour felt like Braxton Hicks until some thought to look and saw I was already 6cm!! Keep nurses up to date and time them!!

That was almost 3 years ago. They are currently fighting over a phone 🙄. Some long term issues but haven’t we all!!

Thinking of you. Flowers

lolacola1977 · 12/11/2017 11:56

Thank you, that is amazing to hear, just want the Braxton Hicks to stop...everything is just going round and round my head....trying to focus on my Carol Dwexk growth mindset book but is easier said than done!

@lolacola1977 have you asked the midwives for some paracetamol? Might help ease of the braxton hicks, or certainly worth a try x

lolacola1977 · 12/11/2017 12:26

No, good idea, just saw consultant on his rounds who was rather downbeat and very factual, I am hoping that is just his manner as the others have been much more positive

Thoughts with you. Whatever happens you're in the best place. Take care OP.

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 12/11/2017 13:59

Best wishes op, hope baby manages to stay in there for another while Flowers
