Hi all

I've been away from this thread, and the intetnet, for a little as as well as helping at times it also plays to my anxiety.

So, we had our scan a week ago, I was 12+4, bub wasn't playing and for the camera but he measured about a day behind. Not overly happy with that as last pregnancy measured behind before m/c but . . .

Prior to this pregnancy I had a hysteroscopy which picked up a septate uterus, this was treated at the time, however there is links between sepatete uterus and an incompetent cervix (weak cervix, can deliver from 14 weeks) and also links betwern recent gynae surgery and the same. I saw a consultant who said she'd book me in for checks at 18 & 22 weeks, I expect since read the Tommy's guidelines that say cervical measurement should be every 2 weeks from 14 weeks! Does anyone know if this is something I can get checked privately? Or if I canget a cervical stich done privately?

Also, I'm now just over 13 weeks, today I've noticed a heavy watery discharge, is this something I need to be worried about? In my head I'm linking it to the incompetent cervix. Midwife has already said she doesn't have knowledge around IC, and I can't get onto my GP till next Friday.

Brenna24 · 24/11/2017 12:26

Hi Zaa. Good to hear that they scan went well and baby was being difficult - somehow to me that always equates to being a fighter. Being one day out is nothing to worry about - the measurement is quite subjective and depends a lot on exactly where you draw the line. I am 5 days behind where I think I should be and apparently conceived 4 days before having sex for the first time that month. But I am not worried as baby had his or her head right up against my uterus and she was struggling to pin point exactly where the measurement should be from. I have no idea about the IC, but I am pretty sure a private place should be able to measure it on a scan - maybe you should phone a few and ask around.

I told DH I was going to have a quiet day in and do some housework. Nothing exciting. Do you think he will notice that there are two large dogs in here there weren't here this morning? Grin My friend is looking after them and had organised someone to take them out at lunchtime, but her downstairs neighbour got in touch to say they were howling the place down and upset. My friend asked me if i had time to pop in for an hour, however I offered just to have them here for the day.

I'd live a day looking after a couple of large sloppy soppy dogs :)

The large hospital I am seen at has just one person (a fetal medicine consultant) who can do cervical length scans, so I imagine it's something quite specialist and that the usual private scan places won't offer it but it's worth a try.

Brenna24 · 24/11/2017 13:03

They are utterly gorgeous and a riot. The male loves cuddles and lying in bed, the female loves squeaky tennis balls. Which my house is full of. So I have one snuggled into me while I listen to the other one rampaging around squeaking things and occasionally bringing one to be thrown. Grin Heaven.

zaa I wouldn't try and get a stitch done privately, they are not without risks (and need to be done under GA, spinal or epidural, which I did NOT realise!) I think anyone doing them without evidence of a short cervix or funnelling (or previous IC-shit as it is to hv that as a reason) would have questionable ethics

I am having cervical length scans fortnightly-requested by consultant when i saw him at 18 weeks, so started at 19 weeks until 26 weeks. Was terrified prior to 1st one, but it looked ok. You can get done privately for sure, it is a TV scan, but pretty quick. Maybe try to speak to midwife again, or book private scan asap for reassurance? Mine was done at scanning clinic by the same tech as did my 12 & 20 week scans

Ekphrasis · 24/11/2017 14:45

Zaa glad you had a good scan though I understand your worry. I noticed general discharge hugely increased after 12 weeks so it probably just that. I think the rise in oestrogen and progesterone is the cause.

Regarding achy bumps further up the thread, lot more cramps achy feelings today but kicks also so I do think it’s quite normal.

zaalitje · 24/11/2017 15:37

I can't afford to wait for evidence of IC though, as that will mean losing this baby, it will be loss number 4 and this one is ivf and we can't afford to try again!

It just worries me that guidelines say fortnightly from 14 weeks and they're not bothering till I'm 18 weeks, 5 weeks away.
I asked if theyd be part of scan and onsultant definitely said only person to do them wad X in fetal medicine and that it would be one at 18 and one at 22 weeks.

zaalitje · 24/11/2017 15:59

hotcookie can I ask if your scans are for the same reason as mine?

Brenna24 · 24/11/2017 17:48

How about asking your IVF clinic if they can do the scans? I am sure if they see any thinning, the consultant in the NHS will be happy to take a look early and put a stitch in.

My ivf was done abroad.

I did try a couple in the area one only sees their patients, the other wants me to pay £400 for an initial consultation before they'll consider scanning me.

I'm reconciled in some way to losing this one. I've just survived the first trimester and now this, it's one trial after another, I feel all these obsticals (we went through so much to get pregnant) means I should take the hint that I'm not meant to be a mum.

It probably sounds so wrong but there's some consulation in knowing at least I'll hold this one, however tiny.

hotcookie · 24/11/2017 19:35

zaa our local private scanning place does cervical length scans (baby scan studio or similar name) so do look.
I have a probably septate/bicornuate uterus (have had no treatment) but am having cervical length scans due to a previous LETZ treatment. Please pursue a private scan or badger your midwife. Its not that specialised-its just an internal scan. Mine didn't start until 19 weeks though. If you feel you are losing fluid (I agree with other posters tho, the amount of discharge is sometimes scary) then go to epu and they can do a scan and get you a stitch if you need it. I really hope you don't have any problems Flowers

zaalitje · 24/11/2017 20:16

At risk of sounding defeatist i dont think there's any point in trying my midwife, she was disinterested when I called after my booking appt to mention septate uterus and hysteroscopy, as it hadn't come up at booking appt. When I asked about IC then she said she didn't really know much about it.
When I had my sub chorionic bleed and thought I was m/c I was told I needed to stop getting stressed about little things.

I'll try the private scan places, thanks, I didn't think they did diagnostics, but there's no harm in asking. Fingers crossed

Ekphrasis · 24/11/2017 20:35

I’m sorry zaa - I wonder if your gp would be of more use?

Ekphrasis · 24/11/2017 20:35

They could arrange a scan perhaps?

hotcookie · 24/11/2017 20:49

zaa whereabouts are you? I use one to one midwives www.onetoonemidwives.org/midwifery-services.htm and my midwife is lovely, and they have arranged all my scans. It's still funded by the nhs but is a much more personal service with a named midwife. Otherwise I agree with Ekphrasis, try your GP, they should be able to refer you to epu who i imagine can do a scan (when I bled in my 1st pregnancy my community midwife dismissed me, but my gp arranged an epu scan the day after I spoke to them-I couldn't get hold of MW). Also google suggests ultrasound direct do them (@£89) and they seem to have branches everywhere.

MsJuniper · 24/11/2017 20:50

@zaalitje when you say a watery discharge I have had loads of watery stuff during this pregnancy, it has made me think I'm bleeding several times and I've had to change knickers. Or is this like soaking through pads?

@AnUtterIdiot thank you for the tip, I hadn't thought of that. Although my levels are more like 6+ so maybe too high to salvage. I'll give it a try tonight though. My other readings have been really erratic, mostly under 7.5 but occasionally I get a really high one. I am a bit upset about it as I feel like that scuppers any chance of a natural birth. I know it isn't the be all and the end all but it feels so unfair that when I had the mcs my body went through a textbook labour.

BlueeSpottyTiger · 24/11/2017 23:12

I'm really stressed out!
I'm having alot of pains and cramps which are spreading all down my legs. I've been for a meal and when i got home i was dreading having a wee and seeing blood.
There is no blood but I'm actually in pain, I've had period cramps in my other pregnancies but nothing like this. I don't know what to do! :( i feel like I'm just waiting to mc again.

UnicornsandRainbows1 · 25/11/2017 04:23

@BlueeSpottyTiger That's no good, is there any way of getting checked out over the weekend? I can't remember how many weeks you are currently.

Ekphrasis · 25/11/2017 07:51

How are you this morning @BlueeSpottyTiger?

Like mrsj, zaa, a few times I thought I’d started bleeding with the discharge. Also, reading your post again, when you say Tommy’s say to check from 14 weeks, is that based on the nice guidelines? There can be local guidance but if you could find the nice guidelines on line, printed them off and spoke to your gp, they might be able to contact the hospital to discuss your concerns.

I know that the sonographer at the ultrasound direct I had for the harmony mentioned something like “we should be able to see baby well today, unless you’ve got a (not sure terminology) uterus” so I got the impression it could get technical if needed. She had dashed over from her job at a local hospital too so I felt she knew her stuff. To be fair though, if it’s nice guidelines, I’m not sure you should pay.

Your midwife doesn’t sound very nice or empathetic.

BlueeSpottyTiger · 25/11/2017 09:24

I'm only 6+3. I'm not having cramps now and no blood came but i am having pains across my whole uterus area and tightenings so I am thinking i may possibly have a uti, because i had tightenings last time i had one around this time!?
I'll ring the doctor on Monday morning.
There is no way i can do anything over the weekend xx

Brenna24 · 25/11/2017 09:42

If you think it is a UTI, you could go to the out of hours over the weekend and get it sorted Bluee. I hope it is that simple and easily sorted and you get seen.

OP posts:
Ekphrasis · 25/11/2017 09:48

@BlueeSpottyTiger, I had one the minute I became pregnant, it’s why I tested so I could mention it for abs (I’d had one 2 weeks earlier) . I rang out of hours as it was a Saturday morning and was given an appt at our local hospital as I said I thought I was pregnant. The dr was great, dipped wee and confirmed I was pregnant and gave me a longer course of the pregnancy safe antibiotics. I would absolutely make a call and try to get seen ASAP.

Ekphrasis · 25/11/2017 09:50

The dip confirmed a uti which I was surprised about as my wee was almost water!

They could confirm or rule out a uti, I think it’s important to get treated ASAP.

I know with my first pregnancy I had quite ‘hot’ aching pains across my lower tummy a lot in those first few weeks too.
