I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is great: 024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Really I avoid it like the plague as I find i have reacted badly too it and pickled onions in malt used to be a favourite. Yeah they say that but I'm so nervous of cross contamination id rather if I was going to gluten myself go all out and eat something I know is going to make me ill. Not that I do that often as I tend to regret it instantly lol. Plus it's not worth my hair falling out and stuff.

Oh my god Nat that's horrific is there anything you or drs can do to help prevent it or is it a just hope for the best situation.

Natsku · 15/08/2017 09:10

There's quite a few things previously on the no-no list that's allowed now like wheat starch but with the caveat that very sensitive coeliacs should still avoid, sounds like you are one, luckily I'm not.

I don't know, I have an appointment with the OB at around 22 weeks which is around when it started last time but now I'm thinking I should make an appointment sooner to ask about it. I know logically it can't be as bad as last time because I had appendicitis too and obviously can't get that again but still don't know how much of the pain was due to the kidney and how much to the appendix (which also got some interesting comments by the surgeon!)

LucindaE · 15/08/2017 09:14

Natsku That sounds awful.
Daffodil Thank you, and it's nice to have you back too. I do hope baby doesn't prolong the Grand Entrance as long as did HaichM;s, and you will soon be coming up the drawbridge of the legendery Pink Castle. She has now been officially welcomed there.
Ouch! Oh dear, but I have to laugh about the beach ball bellies inviting toddlers to take a bounce...Grin
I actually had a look at that illustration on the last square of the old Snakes and Ladders board from where I got the idea when I went to stay at my brother's place in North Wales and it was not as dramatic as I remembered, but that is a youngster's sense of mystique for you, I suppose. Melleebacca I hope you soon arrive!
star and everyone how are things?

DeadDoorPost Unfortunately, babies do seem to enjoy arriving in the small hours. Let's hope yours arrives at a reasonable time of day.
Waves to Mustang and everyone...

It's weird Natsku as I'm totally fine with oats though and others who are mega sensitive can't go near them. Meh it sucks im glad you can enjoy some stuff without worrying.

Oh god they thought I had appendicitis at 26 weeks it was awful turns out it was just really bad ligament pain. I can't even imagine how awful that must have been I could cry even thinking about it for you. Yeah I can imagine like large uterus isn't bad enough Blush drs seem to have no tact button.

Natsku · 15/08/2017 13:21

It is weird, I react to (non-pure) oats even though I'm generally not sensitive (never had any symptoms apart from anaemia before I was diagnosed)

Appendicitis was really horrid, and I just read that sometimes when they remove the appendix they leave a stump which can become inflammed again meaning another bout of appendicitis! Though I'm pretty hopeful that they didn't leave any bit of mine because they needed to examine it afterwards as it had a couple of tumours on (benign thankfully) and was oozing bacterial slime.
I have a midwife appointment next week, think I'll ask them to arrange a sooner OB appointment.

Natsku · 15/08/2017 13:22

Been having horrible cramping pains the last two days but both times they ended with the need for the loo so don't reckon its anything to worry about but did start me thinking about all this again.

Crownandheelshigh · 15/08/2017 14:26

Hello everyone!

So as much as I'm suffering today and have spent most of it asleep/throwing up, I have decided to try the juice from canned fruit to see if that helps. Do I drink it in one go, sip it or?

Hope everyone's ok?

I don't normally join these things but I'm so glad I did this one xx

justtheonethen · 15/08/2017 14:32

crown I think try sipping it. If I drink anything too quickly it sets me off!

Natsku · 15/08/2017 14:44

Definitely sip and see if it stays down.

Crownandheelshigh · 15/08/2017 16:55

Trying to sip it and it seems to be staying down.

All I want is mash potato but I'm too scared to eat anything anymore 😔

LucindaE · 15/08/2017 18:17

Crown I'm hope the juice of tinned fruit helps. As others say, sipping slowly is the only thing. Glad that this thread is helpful.
Natsku Mashed potato sounds surprisingly healthy for a Hyperemesis

diet!

I found mashed potato with gravy was good. The gravy added salt to a bland carb, it was a good combo.

Crownandheelshigh · 15/08/2017 19:16

Attempting mash potatoe and gravy!

At least I'm fancying something rather than not wanting to eat anything. Xx

Mustang27 · 15/08/2017 22:23

Hey crown got the meds posted today. It's first class signed for! I'm sorry if that's a pain didn't want them going missing though. I just said they were pregnancy vitamins I couldn't take as they always ask. I'm hoping they make it too you asap.

Crownandheelshigh · 15/08/2017 23:13

@Mustang27

That's fine not a problem!
I really appreciate it and no not a problem being signed for as I'm home 90% of the time anyways!

Yea I used to post things for an old job and they used to ask me all the time lol!

Xx

LucindaE · 16/08/2017 10:53

Hi everyone,

Just after some thoughts from those who are going through this...

I've been signed off work for 4 weeks now with mild HG. I was on cyclizine but it didn't work, was still being sick and it had a very strong sedative effect which was v unpleasant! I stopped taking it and was managing without any meds just about. Week 12 I felt like I was getting better and got my hopes up. I'm now 13+5 and it's getting progressively worse again, basically on a dry food diet now and drinking any amount of fluids is a challenge. Been getting cracking headaches which I'm wondering is to do with being a bit dehydrated? I'm meant to be back to work next week but I can't see myself feeling up to it. It's a hospital based job and patients will be cancelled if I don't go back just to add to the pressure and guilt trip Sad

I was very sick in last pregnancy but it did stop 16-17 weeks.

Just wondering what you would do? Stay off work a bit longer and hope it passes soon. Go back to GP for more meds? Have many of you been signed off work for a long time?

justtheonethen · 16/08/2017 12:56

pheasant I would go to the doctor asap and get better meds. Cyclizine was same for me. I do take it at night now to sleep as ondansetron seems to keep me awake. I would also get signed off for longer.
I'm a teacher so I get the guilt! Ultimately you come first.

thingymaboob · 16/08/2017 13:03

Hi @BluePheasant. I would get signed off for longer and keep badgering them about drugs. Show your GPS the RCOG guidance so they'll know they need to up their game! I would not have survived the first trimester without ondansetron

Oklahoma · 16/08/2017 13:11

Hi Pheasant welcome to the club no one wants to be a member of.

Cyclizine doesn't help many people with HG it's quite good taken at night in combination with other drugs though. I would go back to your GP and ask for some stronger drugs. The second round drugs to try are metoclopramide and prochlorperazine (also known as stemetil). The best of the antemetics is ondansetron but it's quite hard to get prescribed it in some areas as many doctors are reluctant due to cost. All of these are safe in pregnancy. As for being off work. I'm currently 26 weeks and have been off work since week 4. In my first pregnancy I was off work for the entire time too. You have to take care of yourself and the baby. Trying to go back to work will only make you more sick, much better to recover and then get better sooner. You'll only end up going in to work and then having to go home otherwise.

HaichM · 16/08/2017 16:28

Hello everyone, thank you for your congratulations. I think we're doing OK here, he seems to be feeding and sleeping quite well, and he loves cuddles. I'm so enjoying not having that horrible taste/after taste in my mouth and having everything taste as it should! I'm sure everyone will be pleased to know that all my Hg symptoms left as soon as the placenta was out. Hospital toast after delivering Jacob was the most delicious thing!

Crown: I found that spooning the juice or the juice and fruit of the tinned fruit, peaches especially, really worked for me, rather than sipping it.

Pheasant: I agree with asking for meds and perhaps staying off longer as being back at work and busy/stressed can make things so much worse.

Take care everyone and remember, you can do this!

BluePheasant · 16/08/2017 17:52

Thank you for replies. Definitely right about resting. Boring as it's been, I've spent all day on the sofa and have felt much better. Yesterday I dragged myself out for a pretty long walk with DD and DH as didn't want to miss out but was so sick all day so couldn't really enjoy it anyway!

This thread reminded me of liking tinned fruit in my last pregnancy and have asked DH to pick me up some tinned grapefruit. Can't wait Grin

Congratulations Haich, enjoy your new baby and being able to eat nice food again!

LucindaE · 16/08/2017 17:59

BluePheasant Welcome. You have alerady had great advice from current sufferers. I so agree, do get signed off for longer. Guilt is understandable, but you and baby have to come first and it is very difficult to keep on working with this and makes the symptoms so much worse. Do ask for additional and or stronger meds, as others say. If the surgery are reluctant to give them try the 024 7638 2020 Pregnancy Sickness Support line. They will ring you back with excellent advice. As you are a veteran, I don't need to say my usual spiel about have you got kesostix from a chemists to test for the early stages of dehydration and do you find the juice of tinned fruit, flat full sugar coke and ice lollies any good for bearable liquids? Some swear by cuppa soup or slices of frozen melon.
HaichM Lovely to hear from you. It is so good that like 99 per cent of suffeers, your sickness went with the placenta or within hours!
Great advice from all.

Lucinda - keeping busy here. And getting way sick of all the messages asking me how I am. When I had my head in the porcelain god all day, every day, I didn't get as many messages as I did yesterday! Told hubby, every time someone asks, they go to the back of the baby announcement contact list! 😂

Pheasant (there's lots of blues) - you need stronger meds. As a second pregnancy, it may last longer and be worse, because you're older than the first and you've got another child to care for. Just keep resting.

Haich - yay for a good newborn. Hope you're getting heaps of rest and feeling amazing.

BlueeSpottyTiger · 16/08/2017 20:17

Blue Yumm 'Tinned grapefeuit' i could just eat that! Jealous...Envy hehe!
I'm on my 4th week being signed off too.
Luckly my dr just signs me off for 2 weeks at a time, i didn't even visit her or speak to her this week and she signed me off because i asked the receptionist👍

Hope everyone is doing okay xxx
