I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is great: 024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I know I regret going to urgent care everyone is getting bumped ahead of me. Genuinely just saw someone run into their appointment,an actual run ,with their bottle of pop.

bipolarbunny · 05/08/2017 10:54

Oh @Lemondrop99 so much crying...! Just from sheer exhaustion of body seeming to be staging a war against me.

Ended up having big row with OH because he wouldn't promise to keep his phone charged while away for weekend even though doc had just said if anti emetics didn't work then it could be IV drip time! A lot of sobbing after that. My OH seems to swing between being the most helpful man on earth to the most insensitive, it's so frustrating!

Happy wedding day Blue!!! X

thingymaboob · 05/08/2017 11:09

@user1471462428 I work in urgent care and they will not understand or probably be able to treat hyperemesis as it is nurse led and they will not have much experience of it. Some urgent care places will not have IV antiemetics. Hyperemesis is not suitable for urgent care, I'm afraid so one of two things will happen-
1- they'll assess you and tell you to keep taking your meds and send you on your way
2- they'll send you to emergency department

If you haven't been seen already, leave and go to emergency department. Sometimes the emergency department is the right place! Ketones of 4+ needs IV drugs and fluids and you'll probably be admitted. Urgent care is only suitable for a pop in and pop out situation.

user1471462428 · 05/08/2017 11:46

Our Urgent care is GP led and on reflection was the biggest waste of my time ever. He said he didn't set much store by ketones but would go by my BP which was low. Ketones still four and I'm on a ward. Really fed up. Feel like people don't listen or understand. They sent me to the wrong ward then just overheard a nurse saying she's going send me home as I don't have any ketones/ I haven't even done a sample yet Confused.

thingymaboob · 05/08/2017 13:12

Ah right. The urgent care centres around here are all nurse led. There is so much pressure for people to go to urgent care instead of A & E but hyperemesis is appropriate for A & E when you don't have direct access to hyperemesis treatment units or out of hours.
Don't leave until you've given a sample.
I work in urgent care and when I was really unwell I called my GP to tell them I was thinking about upping my dose of ondansetron. I was triaged by the surgery nurse practitioner (who I've worked with before) and she didn't have a bloody clue! She told me I couldn't up my dose (which was utter bollocks) and advised crackers and ginger.

Pippanippa · 05/08/2017 14:06

user your experience sounds similar to when I visited my GP a while ago with high ketones after a terrible few days during the heatwave. It was truly the lowest I've felt. They weren't bothered about ketones, didn't even take a urine sample, my BP was ok so I got sent home with the ginger and acupressure advice. I cried a lot that day. Hope you get help and meet someone sympathetic there today, it's horrible when you go at your lowest for help and then don't get it. Flowers

DeadDoorpost · 05/08/2017 14:24

Another overly emotional wreck here as well. Spent hours crying last night over a series of things. Had the thought of overdosing which he never happened before so that set me off, as did the idea of DH buying me lingerie for our wedding anniversary because I wouldn't feel attractive in it while pregnant..

cherries I also used to throw up when I had a cold. I was throwing up anyway, but I had a 6 week cold during my 1st trimester and so whenever I went to cough up phlegm I'd then also throw up afterwards. Or the coughing would set me off vomiting. If you're not on medication speak to your GP about it and see if there's anything then can do to help ease it. I had to have 4 different tablets before finding one that worked well and long enough for me. And don't feel bad about lurking, nausea is a pain in the ass and often worse than vomiting anyway.

Good luck blue and congratulations!

justtheonethen · 05/08/2017 16:38

user you poor thing. I hope they have you hooked up to the drip now Flowers
It's horrible not to be believed.

Sorry to all the other sufferers, this is bloody tough.

daffodil actually the only time I've felt well was when I had iv ondansetron and metoclopromide together. Maybe that's the answer. They didn't say anything about mixing them though.

Mustang27 · 05/08/2017 19:18

Oh god everyone is having it so shit right now. I'm so sorry it's like this. Why arent we those happy, make up, hair done and glowing pregnant ladies I see everywhere it's so bloody unfair.

thingymaboob · 05/08/2017 19:30

Yes @Mustang27 it's so unfair!

Anatidae · 05/08/2017 19:32

Well sickness levels down a bit but had another bleed today :(

I've been spotting on and off for a week. No idea what's happening, but doesn't look good. Quite heavy today. Just want it over with if it's going to happen :(

DeadDoorpost · 05/08/2017 20:10

@Anatidae have you spoken to anyone about it today? If not I'd get it checked out to put your mind at rest

Ameliablue · 05/08/2017 20:28

Does anyone else get a tightness across their upper chest when the nausea is really bad or before vomiting?

Anatidae · 05/08/2017 20:38

Yes I called the medical Advice line we have here. They suggested going in next week for a check, there's really nothing they can do at the moment. Told me to take a few days off and take it as easy as I can

Not sure what to tell work. They're utter shits about this sort of thing and I was demoted after my last pregnancy.

amelia yes I did. Please do mention that to you doctor. Most likely it's muscle strain, cramp and acid, but they should check your heart as well. Cardiac issues in women don't present the same way as in men. Don't panic about it, but do mention it and get them to have a little check.

Natsku · 05/08/2017 20:47

I agree, surely its worth asking the doctor/midwife about Anatidae even if they usually are hands-off in early pregnancy.

A bit of good news for us - apparently women that suffer from HG have a slightly reduced risk of dying from cancer! Found that out when I was trying to look up max dosage of doxylamine as the pharmacists here are convinced I can't take more than one a day but it seems they are wrong
www.uptodate.com/contents/treatment-and-outcome-of-nausea-and-vomiting-of-pregnancy/abstract/159,160

actually the only time I've felt well was when I had iv ondansetron and metoclopromide together. Maybe that's the answer. They didn't say anything about mixing them though

I did think before that mixing them together would make sense as the former causes constipation and the latter diarrhoea so they should balance out... though I suppose it doesn't actually work like that in reality.

Natsku · 05/08/2017 20:49

oh cross post, sorry they won't check you out now Anatidae seems a bit crappy, they could at least do a ultrasound to see what's going on

Ameliablue · 05/08/2017 20:50

Thanks anatidae, I'll mention it at my next appointment. I don't remember it from previous pregnancies but it has been quite sore this time.

Ameliablue · 05/08/2017 20:52

That's awful about your work anatidae. I hope the bleeding stops and everything is ok.

Anatidae · 05/08/2017 21:01

I think they probably will next week natsku - it's been on and off for a week now. They are very hands off here. Interesting paper, will save that for a read when I feel better.

Thanks amelia - my work do not have a stellar record with this. Which is ridiculous given the legal protection we have here, but it seems that big companies do what they want. Hope it's nothing serious - it's probably 'just' all the strain from vomiting but it's something you should get checked anyway

Natsku · 05/08/2017 21:04

Funny the difference between our neighbouring countries - here they're quick to do checks and are quite hands on from pretty early (my first midwife appointment was at 7 or 8 weeks)

Anatidae · 05/08/2017 21:08

Health service is under a lot of strain here - big population increases in the urban areas and most of our services are creaking. Even since I moved here I can see the difference.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/08/2017 21:34

Sorry manic day out so havnt replied

Big un mn hugs to all. Hg is awful and when feeling so sick and tired and can't keep food/liquid down so also dehydrated and hormones everywhere

Some days you will cry and feel down. If oh is absent have you any family or friends you can call to come round

@blue hope you had a lovely day

To the lady who was bleeding - sorry can't name check as on phone - please go and get scanned at epuc

They will put your mind at rest. How many w are you ?

Anatidae · 06/08/2017 06:54

They won't scan - I've asked. I'm not in the uk and healthcare is very hands off here.

user1471462428 · 06/08/2017 08:21

The good news is that the nurses are lovely. Had 2 litres of fluids, still have 3 ketones left and have a UTI again. Think I'm stuck in for tonight as well. I've met two women with hyperemesis too.

Mustang27 · 06/08/2017 09:06

User I'm so glad you got fluids!!! Oh those poor women. I wonder if it's getting more common or just more talked about and acknowledged as the awful condition that it is.
