Does anyone want to come and play here? There's loads of space!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Do Mars bars count as snacks for maternity bag? I can't imagine anything pacifying me when I'm in agony, but nothing short of a Mars will even come close.

beansprout · 22/09/2004 16:40

Good point Bibi, to which my considered response would be: Dear God, if we aren't allowed a leedle nibble on a Mars bar when we are in labour, then just when can we? Eh?

Ok here, haven't leant back since my visit to the docs. Dammit this baby will turn if it's the last thing I do......

Bean are you sleeping on left side? getting down on all fours? my baby is lying on the right side and should ideally be lying on left, how do I get her to move over? there just doesn't seem to be enought room?

Bibi yes you are definitely allowed a Mars Bar as a snack! So have you finished packing your bag?

Toots · 22/09/2004 18:20

Mars bars are THE answer to stressful hospital situations. When I was seventeen and passed out at a bus stop (?) they were about to stitch up my chin when my mum arrived. I hear a nurse talking to her outside who told my mum it might be an idea to get something sweet as my sugar levels were low. My mum asked what kind of thing, then heard my plaintive wail 'mars bar!!!' from the stitching room. That's my gal, she thought.

Had my first day of maternity leave today. DD happy to leave for nursery which put a lovely sunny glow over the day. Spent two hours in bed and cleared through a bookcase. There is a lot to do, and if it's all going to take as long as it has today, lord help me.

geogteach · 22/09/2004 19:40

Florence I could be up for coffee and cake next week, what sort of day / time / location?
Have now washed baby sheets and towels and bought stuff for hospital bag, not packed yet obviously, but got speaking to women in Boots buying the same stuff who was due in 3 days and made me feel so much better. Skipped yoga yestaday and got to miss next week to take DS to hospital so that could be the end of antenatal yoga (if baby on time, in my dreams!)

piglit · 23/09/2004 09:11

Florence - Floradix is a miracle remedy! I've been taking it for a week or so and I feel loads better.

Bean - I agree with the wise meece. Your m/w will be better able to judge Beanie's position IMHO. Besides, I thought the Beanster had engaged - surely he can't do a 180 degree turn if he's engaged? I have a couple of good articles on the positioning thing - I'm more than happy to send them to you.

I have m'w appointment today (first one in over 2 weeks which seems a bit odd at 38 weeks) so hopefully I'll find out what db is up to.

I hope you all have a good day. On the chocolate front I have re-discovered the delights of twix bars.

florenceuk · 23/09/2004 10:46

Geogteach, I am free Wed-Friday next week, as that's the last week I have my nanny - then DS is going to her as in her capacity as a childminder 2 days a wk from October. So Wed-Friday I am highly flexible. What about you? Anybody else want to join in (although at this point in time, last minute drop outs may be likely!)

I will have to look for this Floradix. Very tired today because DH got up at 5am to go to Paris for business trip and also because I spend ages trying to get to sleep, waking up, going for urgent pee and then rolling over etc etc. But it's my second to last day at work so not highly motivated anyway!

BTW my chocolate bar of choice is a Twix bar - Mars bars are too much. Or a Magnum. One thing I did pack last time was a sports drink - Gatorade or something similar - as I found I didn't really feel like eating (and once I had the epidural, wasn't allowed anyway) but needed something to keep energy levels up. Somebody else recommended those bars which are just pure glucose (sugar?). Your DP can always eat them anyway!

Piglit, I have been having fortnightly mw appointments since 34wks - and will keep doing so up to 40wks I think.

Turtle35 · 23/09/2004 12:33

I am every two weeks also until 40 weeks. Piglit I think DB can turn in the pelvis, the problem with posterior is they have to do that turn before they can come out and that will delay/prolong labour so ideal position is back to front face down on the left side, my db is on the right side and I am trying to coax her to move over

Florence & Geoteach I would of like to have met up also but have plans Wed, Thurs and Friday - oh what's a Moose to do!!

I am favouring snickers bars at the moment but that seems to change on a weekly basis, twix is up there.

piglit · 23/09/2004 16:10

Good afternoon laydeez. My m/w appointment was fine. Db is 3/5s engaged and in the right position (phew). I suddenly had a massive attack of nerves when she told me that - this really is happening! Next appointment is the day after my due date.

beansprout · 23/09/2004 16:25

Good news Piglit!

Flo and g/teach - would like to meet upi but will be due in a matter of days by the end of next week. Am feeling very tired after local journeys but that can vary. Please let us know where you will be and I will certainly join you if i can.

Called the midwife and she basically said to keep up the all fours stuff etc and to try not to worry.....

Mars bars for me at the moment. Chocolate aside though, any recommended foods for labour? I thought Lucozade might be a good idea (on the glucose front) and then read that fizzy drinks are a no-no.

Finally - someone strongly advised me today to get a rubber sheet in case my waters break while I am in bed. Has anyone else got one or is this a precaution too far?!!!

OP posts:
piglit · 23/09/2004 17:32

I don't plan to do the plastic sheet thing. The chances of our waters breaking in bed can't be that high can they? Can they?? [Goes off to look at some scratch mittens instead of dealing with real db/labour stuff].

Toots · 23/09/2004 17:58

Plastic sheet. Yes. Oh God. Do we have to? I'm so tired. Can't I just buy a new mattress or house or something if that happens. Today has been one of the longest of my pregnancies, had to take car in for service about 8am and dd's been non-stop. Mostly non-stop adorable - but we accidentally walked the 2 miles or so home and I am soooo tired and grumpy, and really not very well with sore throat and headache thing. Thought I must have ridiculously high temperature, but it turned out just to be the heating coming on! Piglit - glad you are right way round, DD is saying 'turn, baby, turn', and 'mummy, do your exercise Now' which is very supportive and motivating, but baby hasn't turned one bit as yet.

Turtle35 · 23/09/2004 18:57

hmm I was thinking of the sheet protector thing too - was planning on purchasing one this weekend, think you can get them from JoJo or Blooming Marv for £20 ish - probably worth it if it does happen?

Toots TWO miles - are you nuts??? sorry but I couldn't do that prior pg!! (joking) I wish I had more energy these days but I found shopping in Peter Jones today a complete chore.

Have MIL arriving tonight from Ireland and will no doubt be completely shocked when she see the size of me. I am also hoping she doesn't want to do much over the next FOUR days as I just don't feel like doing anything but eating and sleeping lately. Do I have to be polite?? Please say NO.

Bellie · 23/09/2004 19:31

Hi all.

I have a waterproof matress cover which cost about £20 from a bed shop in town. However decided to go for it as we had a brand new bed/matress delivered about 6 weeks ago and the amount it cost I think it is £20 well spent!!
The only problem is that it does make me even hotter at night!! Didn't think it was possible but have found a way!
Turtle I don't think that you have to do anything with MIL - I am certainly with you on the doing nothing front!!

beansprout · 23/09/2004 20:33

Turtle - NO!

Am with you on the scratch mittens Piglit, will see you ar the relevant counter in John Lewis.
Toots - sorry you had such a long day, hope you are feeling better (turn baby turn).

Due date is 12 days away . How did that happen?!!!

OP posts:
florenceuk · 23/09/2004 21:26

Scratch mittens waste of time IMO. Waterproof sheet only worth it if you are really really worried about your mattress - after all, you can't protect your carpets/car/clothes, can you?

Turtle, shame you can't make coffee. I think a meet-up post birth but pre-Xmas will be in order. Geogteach/Beansprout, how about John Lewis or Peter Jones?

Bibiboo · 24/09/2004 10:37

What's this about waterproof mattress covers? Oh no . Maybe I'll get a 99p shower curtain from HyperValue and stick that under my sheets or would that be a little sweaty and grim?! hehe
Last day in work today ladies! I am SO relieved I can lounge about for a couple of weeks, although am having second thoughts about nursery and want to re-decorate now.
How are we all today? I am (needless to say) a happy girl.

Turtle35 · 24/09/2004 11:00

Oh Bibi, it's finally come around, you must be so pleased to finish up work, I have lots of admiration for you sticking it out as long as you have - well done girl (pat on the back).

The way I feel about the mattress cover is, I speant a lot of money on our bed and I would hate for it to smell if my water broke on it. So for me £20 is well worth it. Any thing else can pretty much be cleaned right? As a matter of fact just had a chap come around to give me an estimate on my carpets to have them cleaned next week.

We are going to a wedding next weekend and I am so huge, I can't really think of anything to wear, I DON'T want to go out and spend much money on a new dress when I am 37 weeks pg and will most likely never wear it again.

Any suggestions???? TBH I don't really want to go but my DH really wants me to go.

beansprout · 24/09/2004 12:18

Bibi - that's fab! Hope you get a good send off and enjoy!!
Turtle - Is it possible to hire smart mat. clothes? It would make sense for someone to tap this corner of the market? Sorry I haven't got any proper suggestions but would really urge you to consider if you are up to (and for) igoing at all. Is it far away? If you have to go, could you just go for a bit? It would be really, really ok if you just needed to rest and not schelp off to a wedding you know. Please take care of yourself at this stage of things.

OP posts:
Toots · 24/09/2004 13:12

Is it me, or are things suddenly moving rather quickly. Thought you still had ages at work Bibi, and obviously delighted that's not the case. Turtle - re: the two miles, I really think pg is physically harder the first time. Creaks, groans and shooting pains seemed much worse with dd. So if you're planning to do it again, a two mile walk might be a possibility. BTW I think you should greet MIL with 'Whatever' and turn round and go to bed.

Have had reflexology (free: from a student - getting it twice a week now, bliss) and osteo today. Osteo sorted shoulder pain and gave me TBT (turn baby turn) accupuncture. He is also up for trying diaphramatic release TBT maneouvure that I read about on Radical Midwives site - Bean, if you wanted to give him a whirl, let me know, although he is in Sydenham, sorry.

I am feeling much jollier and healthier today, and again, dd went off to nursery with no trub. Love to you all for a peaceful fun weekend.

Bibiboo · 24/09/2004 15:15

Turtle, try Ebay for a maternity dress/outfit for worry about Ebaying it or getting rid of it later on. Occasion wear never gets much wear anyway, so you're likely to get some decent quality stuff at a reasonable price. Good luck.

Well ladies, I'm off! Finally 37 weeks has arrived! But have pc at home, so will still be mumsnetting most days,

hugs to all for all your fab support and advice

geogteach · 24/09/2004 15:20

Sorry slow to get back, basically Wed, Thurs, Fri I have to pick up DS from pre school at 11.45 so unless anyone fancies 10am coffee in Croydon, or anywhere else I can realistically get back from i'm probably out.
Just been to midwife, not sure on position so another scan for me next week, ho,hum.

Toots · 26/09/2004 10:31

Would love to meet, but MUST batten down the hatches next week and get on with all the little things I keep not doing. Geogteach, hope things haven't gone wrong with db's position. How's everyone's weekends been? I felt hopeless yesterday, left dd to dp and swilled around feeling sorry for self and slightly sick. Today, all systems go. This seems to be a pattern - anyone else having good day followed by bad day?

florenceuk · 27/09/2004 09:16

Well, looks like it might be hard to manage a coffee unless I feel like going and spending fortune in Pumpkin Patch again! But we will have to try for post-baby, pre-Xmas meet-up.

Feeling very fat, stiff and uncomfortable - even though I've got officially 20-odd days to go, I just want it over and done with! I huff and puff just going up and down the stairs. Have horrible head cold which has disturbed sleep - DS now parked firmly in front of Cbeebies while I get on with essentials like Mumsnet. Have eaten all the chocolates I got as going away present from work! DH and I had argument over who was most stressed over work/baby/state of the study etc etc - not a great weekend!

piglit · 27/09/2004 09:31

Morning meeces. It sounds like we are all tired/stressed/uncomfortable. I'm so glad it's not just me - I've been feeling crappy all weekend. Poor dh is really busy at work but has done loads and loads of stuff to give me a break. I feel like such a wimp.

Ohmigod - due date is NEXT WEEK. What has happened to the last 8 and a half months?
