I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
//sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
//cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I was thinking we needed a new thread, but we've got twenty-three posts left, so it should be OK until tomorrow pm.
IamSerious I am so glad you saw a GP who took you seriously. That melting drug would be buccastem. Hopefully the meds will help you dramatically, but if they don't help enough, don't hesitate to go back.
AllAboutTheCake How are you today? Great advice from MotherofPearl. It's always awkward when you feel ill and the weekend is coming up. I hope that was a glitch; there has been a nasty virus going about.
Blondes Good luck with work on those days.
MissJuliet Are you out of hospital most of the time now? It's great that you manage to remain cheerful when having to be fed by tube. That is dramatic.
lizzy Sorry, I managed to get your name wrong before. How are things?
Glad you are feeling a bit better.
happydaysYou cleaned the WHOLE HOUSE? My goodness; that makes me feel so lazy! I so agree that SleepymrsE was a trooper. I hope the vomiting is going off for her. If not, then it will; but it's very difficult, when breast feeding.
SpecialStains Thank you so much for coming on with such an encouraging message.
Lucy How are you? I hope you aren't suffering too badly. I was concerned when last you posted.
I hope everyone is coping today. Waves to all.

Hi Lucinda , I'm good thanks. Saw the doctor again & now banned from any more immunisations. No flu jab for me.
Started NCT last night & back again tomorrow, all seems very real suddenly! Wasn't really what I was expecting (the NCT, that is), think I've listened to too many rumours. Still working on Konmariing the house. Will get there eventually... hopefully!
All okay with you?

Happy feel free to come & clean my house whenever you want 😉

Quiet on here today. Cake, how are you today? Lucy, gosh, NCT already - that does make it real!
Hope everyone else is having a tolerable time. DD2 and I both have nasty colds which is boring.

Morning everyone, just a quick check in from the magical pink castle (lucinda you may need to explain that to the newbies) Thank you all for the congratulations message. Will try and catch up with everyone once things have calmed down a little. Getting used to life with a toddler and newborn is very tiring and hard but the good news is the sickness and nausea have now stopped! Hurrah. Was still being sick at lunch time on Thursday but after one last big vomit session suddenly it lifted. I had some jam on toast and a cup of tea, 20 minute snooze and hey presto! Still getting some heartburn at night but much better too.

Not to share too much of my birth story but like ikkle, I had to have an enema as being bunged up from the ondansatron & iron tablets (which I still have to keep taking for a while) was preventing DD from descending. 20 mins from giving the enema to DD being born.

I hope everyone including those who have just joined manage a restful weekend. Those trying to reduce meds... I was still taking 2 cyclizine, 2 ondansatron, 1 omeprazole (& 2 iron tablets) til the end of my pregnancy and DD is perfect. Don't try to be a martyr if the pills are working, keep taking them.

Also, hoping rae is doing ok... Not heard from her in a while. You're now top of the list I think so that should be a bit of a boost.

How lovely to hear from you, Sleepy & as for the news on the vomiting... 🎉🎉🎉!

I skipped a dose yesterday morning as thought I was a bit better. Mistake. The doctor is hopeful that it might be easing off a bit though & I do think he might be right.

Couldn't really sleep from feeling so dreadful & have to be up for the NCT soon. We are learning about birth positions today & I'm having a planned c section, so not the end of the world if I keep having to rush off.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Hi I'm new. I've been lurking for ages but I was managing but I'm not now. I'm now 12 weeks pregnant and have felt particularly ill this week, I'm not sure what's going on. Anyway, I'm wondering, how do you know when you need to be admitted for a drip? I've got some ketostix and they've been 2 or 3+ all week even though I'm not vomiting. I just can't tolerate food or drink very much at all. Ive never been admitted before and I've never had raised ketones before (I don't think). I just feel so unwell and like something is really wrong which is a bit weird to start at 12 weeks. What do you all think? Is there anywhere to get advice on a weekend, just 111?

redjumper Welcome. Defintely go to A and E if your ketones have been measuring so high all week. They usually admit at 3+ and if you are struggling to drink enough fluids, even without vomiting, you can end up very dehydrated and from what you say, you probably are. Probably, you'll need admitting but will defintely feel better for being given fluids and probably prescribed meds (I take it you've been managing without)?

Thank you so much for your reply Lucinda. The ketones are now measuring 1+ which I hope is a sign of an improvement rather than just variation. I feel just as unwell though with a headache now too. Thanks for the A&E advice which is good to know if they get so high again. Urgh this is such a horrible illness, especially now I'm at the point of really worrying about my health!

redjumper I'm glad the pesky ketones are down again. But you sound as if you need meds, and it would certainly be worth making an appointment at the GP's.
How do you find ice lollies, flat full sugar coke, ice cubes, elderflower water, soda water or chocolate milkshakes? Those are just a few of the drinks people have tried. Some find nibbling on crisps or cheap ice cream good, too...

Thank you again! This is the first time I'm getting any sensible advice, the midwives and GPs seem very disinterested and uninformed. I am trying to hold off the meds but I do have a prescription for cyclizine if I need it. It's just I was under the impression that they don't do much for nausea- vomiting hasn't been a problem for me. Do you have a view on this? Also, this week I have had diarrhoea so I'm hoping that I'm feeling this bad because of a stomach bug rather than the pregnancy sickness getting worse. I can't see why pregnancy sickness would get so much worse out of the blue in week 12 other than a stomach bug?? But maybe it has and maybe I will take the meds??

LucindaE · 08/10/2016 16:45

redjumper It is true that some find the meds help the vomiting rather than the nausea; some find they help both. If you aren't vomiting, maybe they would help the nausea? I am glad that the medics at least prescribed cyclizine just in case. I understand your reluctance to take meds, nobody likes taking meds in pregnancy, but cyclizine has been proven safe for several decades - at least since the 1980''s, I think. It could be a bug, as there is a nasty one going about with sickness. It's true the general pattern is for the worst suffering to be earlier, with things peaking round weeks ten to eleven, so you may well be right.

Welcome Redjumper. Your case sounds similar to Autumn's, who IIRC hasn't really been vomiting but has been so debilitated by nausea that she too has had ketones because she's unable to stomach fluids. I wish I could remember what medication she's on. I'd try the cyclizine to see if it makes any difference for you. As Lucinda says, it is extremely safe. Do keep us posted.
Lucy, how did NCT go? Glad to hear that both you and your doctor feel there may be an improvement.
Sleepy, lovely to get your missive from the Pink Castle! So glad the sickness has now lifted and you can just enjoy the blissful newborn phase.
Yes I'm also concerned about Rae, I hope she's OK.

MotherofPearl and SleepymrsE Ah, yes, the Pink Castle, I'm so glad that SleepymrsE has arrived here at last. To explain that strange term - when I was a kid we had a Snakes and Ladders board. The last square, when the game had been completed, depicted a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a horrible version of that board game - manage to eat, and the sufferer feels she's climbed a ladder, but then you have a bad day and you feel that you have whizzed down a snake to before where you were before, I came to call the end of the Hyperemesis Horror 'The Pink Castle' which all eventually reach.

I am feeling a lot better today but that's with not taking the tablets I felt they were making me worse and giving me a really sore head I've actually managed to eat and drink and enjoy a meal so that's a start hoping will ease as the weeks go on...10 weeks Friday xx
