Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
//sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
//cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Wow- thank you for all of the advice ladies. It's really appreciated. The blood is bright red and flecked over the bike when it happens. I think it's just small blood vessels that have been irritated by all of the retching and nothing more sinister.
I haven't thrown up since yesterday evening, but then I haven't tried to drink anything either... I have been fast asleep all
Morning, I just feel so exhausted.
I have a little girl who turns one tomorrow, which complicates the admission. I'm going to try to drink something now, slowly and see what happens.
If I don't keep that down then I suppose I have no choice.
GP didn't test my urine at all, i might order some sticks as you suggest.

Huge congratulations sleepy that's fantastic news. I'll bet she's gorgeous Flowers

IAmSeriousAndDon'tCallMeShirley I'm dismayed that GP didn't test your urine. Do get some of the magic sticks . You can get them from any chemists - if you can arrange for anyone else to do that if you're not up to it yourself. Do you have dark urine, dry skin that won't spring back if you pinch it, a headache, or blurry vision? Flat full sugar coke is good, if you have any in, and ice lollies, ice cubes, soda water, elderflower water (I think because it's sugary) and anything you can stand.

I'd get yourself to the hospital now Iamserious as you sound like from your symptoms you are already dehydrated and drinking now might not be enough to get you back on track.

Also I can't remember who said it but a pregnant lady shouldn't be waiting 48 hours without fluids before it's classed add an emergency. That's far too long - ask any medic!

I'm 29 weeks now and even though I still vomit occasionally and battle with the nausea at least it's not constant now. Being tube fed means I don't have to try and keep forcing myself to drink which was pure torture. I wouldn't wish HG on anybody. Not even Jeremy Hunt!

Light tripper - that's what I meant. Drop one to take 2 - tho sorry your dropping means you are sick again

Now I darent drop ........

Mother. It's the only thing I can stomach 😢 so want a Pepsi Max and even a cuppa

Lucozade makes me puke

Ouch at filing

Iamserious change doctors. You need one that is supportive and will get worse as have child already so harder to rest /sleep

Yep the throwing up of yellow bile I rem well. Tho mine wasn't streaked with blood. That doesn't sound good 😢

If you aren't weeing you are dyhydrated and need to go to hospital ASAP esp as you haven't drank for over 12hrs

If you can't drink try ice lollies. The rowntree fruitier ones worked a treat for me when couldn't stomach anything in early weeks

As happy days said needs to get into your system. Think took a good week /10days for me and that was 3 a day of cyczline

Sleepy. Yah. Congrats 💓💓💓💓💓💓 I was told the retching etc of HG goes as soon as give birth ......

Ladies can I ask for those who got prescribed cyclizine did you find it made you go to the loo more like number 2? Sorry for too much information just wondering if that's normal? X

I'm not sure lizzy - possibly but pregnancy hormones always make me a bit loose so it's hard for me to tell the difference...

Blondes I dropped 3 to 2 without problem! It's just 2 to 1 that I seem to have rushed. Maybe just give it a few more days and then try if you aren't sure? I have been able to stay up later since I dropped my dose, though not sure if that's losing the sedative effects of the pills or just less sickness meaning I'm less exhausted!

I've been managing to eat a bit more so not sure if a mixture of that and the medication I know this is going to sound stupid but it's safe to take in pregnancy? Even tho it says on the instructions not too take I am so anxious about taking anything :( but I know I need it to help me just worried in case it harms the baby x

Just wasn't sure I don't even like taking paracetamol when pregnant so this is all new to me as my first pregnancy was straight forward just now sure If it's the medication or the fact I can eat a bit more that's upsetting my tummy.... doctors and midwife said it's totally safe but I just worry incase it harms baby x

Report
MotherofPearl · 06/10/2016 17:45

Lizzy, just to reassure you that cyclizine has been widely used in pregnancy for decades and is regarded as very safe. There is more information on the Pregnancy Sickness Support website (see link in Lucinda's OP). I took it all through my second pregnancy, and DS turned out just fine.

LucyHMK · 06/10/2016 17:59

Hello you lovely bunch of ladies- I have been overwhelmed by the amazing support.

After much faff and back and forth I eventually got to see a different GP who was really great. She took one look at me and said she wasn't happy.
She examined me (previous GP didn't at all) and said I needed to get this sorted quickly or would be in big trouble.
She got some metaclopromide out and gave it to me as an injection. She said it should take about 40 mins to work. Then have me a prescription for a different drug to dissolve under my lip later?
She says lf the injection isn't enough and I don't manage enough fluids then I will have to be admitted.

I'm grateful that she gave me an injection at the surgery- I really don't want to miss my daughters first birthday. Already suffering huge mummy guilt about the small age gap, and it 'ruining' our bond. Silly I know.

I really hope his helps so I can break the cycle. Xxx

Sleepy Congratulations on your little girl! FlowersEnjoy all the newborn cuddles, and I really hope the nausea ends soon. It's a good job these babies are cute!

Sorry to see so many new names on this thread. Excellent advice from Lucinda and MoP as always!

I'm doing well 7 weeks post hg life! Still constantly so grateful not to feel sick, and making the most of my extra 500 breastfeeding calories a day to make up for all the Cake I couldn't eat while pregnant. I even had my first roast dinner with gravy which the mere thought of would send me into a vomiting session! Just a few more foods to try out, and hopefully I'll handle all the Christmas food smells this year!

Keep on surviving. It's worth it. I didn't realise how much I would enjoy having a newborn!

Hi ladies,

Sorry for going silent for a few weeks.

Congratulations sleepy!

Waves to MOP Lucinda Rae and all.

After a few weeks of sickness under control and tapering down my cyclizine to 1 or 2 a day I've just had a shocker of an evening. Sick 5 times in last four hours and can't keep food or fluids down. Managed to keep a cyclizine down for 45 mins without vomiting so hope that's now in my system.

Just used a Kesostick and I'm measuring at 0.5 ketones. What's anyone's advice - should I ride it out over night and hope I feel better tomorrow and if not retest ketones then? Or is it worth giving the maternity unit a call now and seeing what they think? Don't want to overzealously take myself to hospital if not necessary (and I could wake up tomorrow and be ok) but on the other hand part of me thinks if I wait until the morning and it has got worse then it's more of an issue all around.

Report
Allaboutthecake13 · 06/10/2016 21:20

I should say, I am measuring on the second box on the diagram (the 0.5/memo/L) one which googling suggests is around 1 ketone?

Hi Cake, good to hear you've had a few better weeks but sorry to hear about your very bad evening. I'd keep an eye on the ketones - they usually only take action after 2+ or 3+. But if you feel very dehydrated and can't keep fluids down then I reckon contact them regardless.
Lovely to hear from you Special! Glad to hear you're enjoying time with your newborn DS. I do think a benefit (?!) of HG is that the newborn phase is sheer bliss compared to being pregnant - we aren't that bothered by sleepless nights and sore nipples after the rigours of HG!
Iamserious, I'm so relieved to hear that you've seen a different doctor and been given medication. Sounds like you've been prescribed Buccastem or its generic equivalent. Don't hesitate to try go back if you don't improve, especially regarding keeping fluids down. Hope you manage to enjoy your DD's birthday tomorrow.
Happy, stop that cleaning! Don't want you tiring yourself out and feeling sick.
Waves to everyone else - Lucy, Light, Lucinda and anyone impolitely forgotten.

Allaboutthecake13 · 06/10/2016 22:03

Thanks Pearl as always for your wisdom.

That was my thinking too - am just worried as currently not keeping anything down (even sips of water) but know my ketone levels aren't enough to worry the HCPS. Will maybe try and sleep, and review the situation in the morning.
