I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Lucy My goodness, that is severe! That's awful, when at one time the meds were working. The reason I distinguished between individual heaves and separate vomiting sessions is because it seems that most doctors count the heaves as 'vomits' I didn't realise that myself when suffering, and if you state you were sick ten times in the morning, they may count that as heaves, and not see it as being as serious as it is. I can't imagine why you aren't dehydrated. Mother Hen is quite anxious about you.

Hi, I found this thread last night and I'd would like to join please.

I'm 11+4 on metoclopramide after vomiting 10 times a day. The vomiting is mostly down to once or twice now (apart from odd surprise day of misery)
I don't know how women do this, I've wished every day away for the past 6 weeks. We are surviving thanks to parental help. The kids are eating crisps and I spend most of the time horizontal.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/10/2016 12:33

Lucy sounds awful :( mine is bad enough but moving compared to you. Did laugh about the cat (sorry)

Castle welcome and keeping still helps me

Lucinda didn't know that about heaves. I constantly heaved 4/12w the retching is worse then sickness - unless rice. That the worst thing thi last night bubs wanted a curry and so yummy eating it but Obv it returned 😢😱

I told doc when I was sick and didn't count the heaves

MotherofPearl · 02/10/2016 22:12

Just dashing on to welcome Castle to our ranks. Sorry to hear you're suffering. Did your GP prescribe the metoclopramide? If so, could you go back and ask to try something else that might be more effective? How old are your DC? Hope you have plenty of RL help and support?
Feeling worried about Rae. From your post it sounds like things have really taken a turn for the worse for you. Hope the spa days help to give you some rest.
Another day down everyone.

LucindaE · 03/10/2016 11:57

Castlefeck Welcome. Sorry I couldn't join MotherofPearl in welcoming you earlier, damned PC needed updates, which of course, jammed. I so agree with her, in my case it's a case of 'do as I say, not as I did' and ask for more effective meds. Also, grotesquely, as we were discussing below, one needs to emphasize the number of heaves to each separate vomiting session or the GP can underestimate how bad it is. Things will almost certainly get better; almost nobody suffers as much later on as they did early on. Glad you are getting some support. Have you got the magic kesostix, sorry, I couldn't work out if you were a veteran?
Blondes That staggering about and constantly heaving is probably the worst thing...
I'm a bit worried about Rae and Autumn and I do hope SleepymrsE isn't suffering too badly...

Hello all,

Just popping in to say hi and welcome to Castlefeck. So sorry about your hair Lucy that must be so upsetting. It's all the little things like the saliva and rhinitis and burst blood vessels and decaying teeth and falling out hair that really just add to the glamour isn't it? At least I have avoided the last one - did need a big filling after my last PG so hoping to avoid that this time. I have also found stealing my DD's toddler toothpaste in the evenings when I am worst is really helpful - it's much less strong tasting and less likely to send me retching.

I was also very interested to hear some Drs count each individual heave as a vomit, so if you said 6 times a day they might think you were really just sick once with 6 heaves making it up?? I don't think I've ever thrown up just once on that definition - it's always at least 5 or 6 individual heaves in any vomit isn't it? I've sometimes (rarely) retched just once, but "a vomit" is always a 5-10 minute joy of repeated little vomits IME. But I don't understand why they don't clarify if it's unclear what an "episode" of being sick actually constitutes.

Things are still slowly improving here. I've managed to take the drugs down again so I'm now doing 2x cyclizine and 1 x meto. Seems to be going OK so far, I think I'm feeling a bit worse but haven't thrown up so I think I will stick with this for a while, in the hope I can cut everything by 20 weeks (which is when I stopped vomming last time).

Only about 10 days until we are on holiday (again!), and then our 20 week scan once we are home. Feeling a bit nervous about that given my SUA, but there is nothing I can do about it so trying not to think about it too much.

Hoping others are seeing some improvement too.

MissJuliet · 03/10/2016 15:31

Hi everybody. I have severe hyperemesis gravidarum. I'm 28 weeks and have been tube fed for the last 3 months. It's been a lifesaver - literally. I spent the majority of weeks 8-19 in hospital. With my NJ tube and lots of medication things are much better. If I can offer support to anybody please let me know. I've even dealt with transferring myself to a different hospital to get appropriate care. I cannot recommend the charity pregnancy sickness support enough, especially their helpline. Please know you're not alone and however dark your thoughts - someone else will have felt that way - it's important to let people know how you feel and don't keep it bottled up. Xxxx

LucindaE · 03/10/2016 19:29

MissJuliet Welcome. Goodness, you must have had it worse than even any of the worst cases I have known on here. I am glad you are receiving adequate treatment now. So nice of you to come on to encourage others when you are so ill yourself.
LightTripper Try not to worry about the SUA - as you know, I had that too, and the consultant said that he always had a percentage of women with it, and abnormalities were rare. Glad things are improving a little.

lizzy7915 · 03/10/2016 23:11

Hi just looking for some advice I am 8+4 and have had bad sickness since 6 weeks I am getting to the stage where I can't keep anything down including water.... I've lost over half a stone in weight with not eating but it's the fluids that's worrying me? I've had a sore back all day and my urine is very dark pretty much orange.... I saw my midwife a few days ago she tested my urine and said was fine and just to drink Lucozade sport? Am I best getting in touch with her again or seeing my gp? They said they would prescribe me sick tablets just said it's part of pregnancy and to get on with it? Am I allowed to have the powdered sachets that hydrate you or is that a no no? Any advice welcomed thanks :) x

lizzy7915 · 03/10/2016 23:14

Wouldn't

happydays00 · 04/10/2016 04:57

Hi lizzy, welcome and sorry to read you are suffering so much. Some shocking advice from your midwife there I'm afraid. Get in touch with your GP as not been able to keep fluids down is not a normal part of pregnancy! Your GP will be able to prescribe you some anti emetics which should help (don't despair if the first ones don't work, there are several options).

lucinda, mop and the others will be along with some better advice than my insomnia addled brain can manage but in the meantime perhaps try sipping something very cold, or very hot, I managed to keep fluids down if they were freezing Flowers

MissJuliet · 04/10/2016 07:08

Hi Lizzy. At my early pregnancy unit you can just turn up to be seen - I'd find out if this is the case with yours then you can by pass the GP as it sounds like you need urgent attention if you can't even keep fluids down. For me personally anything fizzy makes me worse but everyone is different. If you need to wait to see your GP try ice lollies. I'm rather strange with my hyperemesis in that for ages I found eating easier than drinking. Watermelon is something like 90% fluid so that helped. If you feel really unwell with a pounding heart and feel out of it I'd go to A&E. Thinking of you xxx

SleepymrsE · 04/10/2016 08:42

Morning all, still no baby but I do have this stinking cold that has reappeared. Struggled to sleep last night with a sore throat and bunged up nose. Wish it would go away!

Hello to newbies. missjuliet you are a hero - coping with such a severe case of HG and still being in good spirits and providing support to others. I am in admiration.

Welcome to lizzy, you really shouldn't be fobbed off when you are unable to keep any fluids down. You require anti sickness medication. Please contact your GP today and get an emergency appointment. Tell them you have been unable to keep any food or fluids down for the last few days. They should prescribe something, likely to be cyclizine/promethezine as a starting point but as someone has mentioned there are others so if the first ones they prescribe don't work, please do go back. If your GP won't prescribe it can be useful to go to an out of hours clinic or if you can go to your nearest EPU. Carry on as you are with no meds will likely end up with a hospital admission for hydration. You will be feeling very low at the minute - and don't feel guilty of that as most, if not all, of us on here have felt that way at some point in our pregnancies. It does get better, and although it has felt like the longest pregnancy ever (esp when I couldn't move without throwing up), I can't believe I'm only days away from my due date. Once you get the right meds, you'll start to find a few drinks/foods that work for you. Often it's referred to as the beige HG diet. Lots of us have found flavoured milk to be ok. And as others have said, ice lollies can be helpful to get some fluids down. Don't worry about the nutrition of what you're eating/drinking - just eat/drink whatever you fancy and what works for you. These HG babies seem to do pretty well considering. As lots of HCP's say, they are very good parasites. When you are able to it is worthwhile trying the combined VitD and Folic acid tablets - they are much smaller than the pregnancy vitamins which very few of us on here could manage to swallow or keep down. Please stick around on here as it is a great source of support. Not many understand how it feels to have HG.

Hi to everyone else, sorry to hear of you hair loss lucy, hopefully it'll ease off soon and your hair will start to recover. Is it worthwhile speaking to a hairdresser to help with hairstyles that will cover th missing patch?

Sorry to hear others are struggling so much. happy how are you doing? I struggled to sleep last night but things haven't been as bad. Fingers crossed the PG insomnia gets better for you too.

rae worrying about you too. Please do take it easy at work. I'm sure I got worse in the third trimester because I was pushing myself too hard. I'm not actually too bad (despite the cold) now I've had a decent break from work to rest up.

light glad to hear things are improving a little for you. Hopefully time will go quickly for you now.

Waves to lucinda and mop and everyone else who I have rudely overlooked. Best get back to parenting DS who is currently sat watching even more kids tv!

Just dashing on to welcome izzy7915. I so agree with others, do make an emergency appointment with the GP's, with someone to back up what you say if you can, and emphasize how bad it is. I know too well how it's hard to fight your corner when feeling rotten. Do invest in some kesostix available from any chemists to check for the early stages of dehydration. If they measure 3+ ketones then you'll need to be admitted for fluids. In the meanwhile, can you stand ice lollies, sips of full sugar coke, ice cubes, soda water, elderflower water, chocolate milkshake,r jelly or cheap ice cream or nibbles of crisps? The midwife is seems to be confusing normal ms and Hyperemesis, which is like confusing a mild headache with a full scale migraine. I never heard that rehydration sachets are bad in pregnancy, I'm sure women on here have tried them.
SleepymrsE Sorry still no baby and a cold -and after that midwife promised that you would not go to term!
Waves to all. Back soon.

Thank you for the welcome,
im reading but stringing coherent messages together seems beyond me. I'm keeping food and water down now and sometimes don't feel sick.

Juliet your experience sounds horrific xxx

Lizzy that level of sickness isn't normal, good luck, I hope some tablets can help. I'm on metochlopromide which has helped.

MrsE hope your baby comes soon

Has anyone suffered with an upset stttomach at the same time as HG? I am just to add to the joy of pregnancy. I'm drinking like a fish now so not worried about dehydration, but it is draining.

lizzy7915 · 04/10/2016 10:31

I've managed some toast and some water this morning and staying down just now so will see how it goes today and if not I'll be making an apt :)

MissJuliet · 04/10/2016 10:48

Hi Castle - yes I've had the runs with HG too and so did my friend. It's really cruel isn't it! I think mine was overflow though from having been terribly constipated. Oh the joys of HG! For anyone who is not getting enough response from antisickness tablets, being put on steroids was a big turning point for me. Too many women aren't being offered them. Some women are choosing to end their pregnancies because of the hell of HG and are not being offered steroids first which is terrible. Things have to change. It's also awful that treatment varies depending which hospital you're under. I had one nurse tell me when I was in resus one time that everytime I vomited it put strain on my baby. This is an absolute load of nonsense! I also think the term morning sickness shouldn't be used anymore and should be replaced with pregnancy sickness instead. I'm at my best in the mornings! Sorry for the rant bit I feel so passionate about the fact that the treatment of HG shouldn't have to be such battle!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/10/2016 11:05
