I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I made it through my morning at work. Back to back meetings has meant it's gone really quickly so that's good. Just trying a sandwich and ready salted crisps. The beige diet will hopefully work wonders again!

Re: drinks, have you tried flavoured milk? I have been able to tolerate strawberry milk since earlyish in the pregnancy and I know a lot of the others found chocolate milk was ok too. Other than that I'm no help as its all about the sugary drinks.

light, thanks for the list. Now special has had her baby, and ickle's came very early I'm wondering if I'm now top of the list. I remember joining this thread around 7 weeks pg and thinking it'd take forever to get to the top. Now it's getting scary that it's getting closer although so looking forward to my nights being disturbed by a newborn and not by sickness.

happydays00 · 18/08/2016 18:05

sleepy glad you made it through work ok, did you manage to get some rest this afternoon? Sounds like you are top of the list now and it will be here before you know it!

light February seems a long way off too but you know it will fly, especially with Christmas in between too!

I survived the spa day (only sick once) and had a lovely massage followed by afternoon tea. Sadly I don't think the afternoon tea is going to stay down much longer. Currently lying in front of a fan feeling very hot and bothered and apparently looking very pale. Joy.

Wonder how special is getting on with her new arrival and if she is enjoying some nausea free days.

Still no news from hues - really hope that she is doing ok!

Waves to everyone else!

happydays00 · 18/08/2016 18:23

rae what about you? Have you managed to get any rest at all? Have your guests left?

MotherofPearl · 18/08/2016 18:34

Mulb, if you like melon might cucumber be worth a go, especially if you're not fancying sweet things? It has a high water content. I'm afraid I could only tolerate pretty sweet drinks. I was a big fan of the chocolate milk Sleepy mentions. and also lemon barley squash made up with a LOT of ice, or very cold sparkling elderflower. Are any of those sounding like they have potential? Sometimes HG felt like an ongoing quest to find the ideal drink and food, a quest that was never fully satisfied!
Sleepy, hope you're feeling restored by that beige food after your busy morning?
Happy, glad you survived the spa day and hope that afternoon tea stays put. I hated that feeling before being sick, when you know it's just a matter of time!
Light, thanks for updating the due dates list. 28 Feb is always dangerous potential for 29 Feb, but luckily 2017 isn't a leap year! Grin Mulb, do add your due date if you'd like to. It can be nice seeing yourself moving up the list, as Sleepy says.
I can hear DS misbehaving as he waits for story time so I'd best crack on!

RaeSkywalker · 18/08/2016 21:37

Sleepy really hope you have a better night tonight! And yes, I believe you are top of the list. I also joined here early on (about 6 weeks) and remember it feeling ages away... It still kind of does, but it's edging closer! Starting to think about having to get the small human out of me now 😁

happy glad that you managed to enjoy yourself a bit. You're very brave- I've had a spa day voucher to use with my mum since Christmas, and keep cancelling because I'm too scared to go with HG! We're going at the end of the month now (hopefully).

R.e. Drinks; I am also all about the sugar. Chocolate milkshake mainly. Small sips of lucozade sport when really bad. I've also had flat lemonade and I know that flat coke is meant to be good. If you want non-sweet, how about just sucking on ice cubes? I also found that this meant I could keep some fluids down.

I'm ok today thanks happy- guests are gone so I'm on the sofa in my pjs. One more day at work before the weekend! Had a chat with him this morning and said I just can't cope with this agin whilst pregnant- it's lovely to see people but I need to be able to lay about if I want to. In other news, DH has just eaten his own body weight in sweets-and is moaning about how sick he feels 😂 😂 😂

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/08/2016 21:51

Can I gatecrash and ask a bit of advice please? I feel a bit of a fraud being here, as am sure I am not feeling as bad as all of you. But, I am really struggling and thought I might get some good advice here. Pregnancy number 2. With ds I was very very nauseous for about 16 weeks, but learnt how to manage it, and as long as I ate mainly carbs every hour or two (max) and had plenty to drink, it was tolerable. This time, the nausea was awful again, once I realised it was pregnancy related, I start with the regular cards and it helped, but it's take a turn for the worse the last couple of weeks with me struggling to even feed ds, clean him up, and me being sick several times. Can anyone suggest what might help if regular carbs aren't working? Thank you.

RaeSkywalker · 18/08/2016 21:54

Hi Notta, sorry you're suffering. Are you managing to keep fluids down?

happydays00 · 18/08/2016 22:07

Hi notta to echo rae the doctor told me (to an extent) not to worry too much about food but to focus on staying hydrated with fluids. I couldn't tolerate much food at all in those first 3 months and survived mainly only tinned fruit and small amounts of beige food (crackers, bread, rice, mashed potatoes). It's horses for courses though really so I would just try and find what works for you. A lot of second time mum's on here have said what worked for them first time round has had the opposite effect this time round so perhaps you're in the same boat?

rae so glad to hear you've done some lounging - hope you feel better for it! To be honest, turns out the spa day was stupid and not brave and am paying the price for it tonight with a lot of vomit (and a lot of tears). I really hope yours ends better! Also feeling particularly restless and agitated now so worried it's going to be a sleepless night Confused

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/08/2016 22:14

Hi rae, yes water is best. And in the middle of the night, milk. Sometimes Pepsi max is good too. Fluids are OK really. And as i said, I'm not really in the right place here but was hoping for advice on how to feel a bit better. I don't want to eat anything. I feel crap if I do eat, crap if I don't. I can't live on crinkly salt and vinegar mini 'chedders' i don't think!

RaeSkywalker · 18/08/2016 22:30

Glad you're managing to drink notta.

I generally find that carbs are the way forward- I know you're already doing this, but what kind of carbs are you trying? Have you tried rice cakes, or cereal? Potato still makes me very sick, but I found Rice Krispies brilliant early on- I literally ate one or 2 (dry) at a time from a ramekin. Or dry cream crackers? How far along are you? I wouldn't worry about variety, especially early on- it's just good if you can eat (and if all you can cope with are mini cheddars, so be it).

Lots of us on here are fans of milkshakes (I like chocolate).

Finally- if this is affecting your quality of life (and it sounds like it is), please see a Dr and ask for help. Sickness is worse if you're tired- I'm guessing that you might be more tired this time around because you have another child to think of! There are medications which are safe for use in pregnancy and can take the edge off things.

RaeSkywalker · 18/08/2016 22:32

Gawd happy I'm so sorry. Nighttime scares me, it's somehow always worse when you know that most of the people you know are asleep and you're up feeling awful! I've cried a lot at bedtime recently Blush Hope you get some rest tonight Flowers

MotherofPearl · 18/08/2016 22:32

Notta, welcome and sorry you're feeling so rubbish. Most of us on here are (or were) on medication in order to be able to eat and drink reasonably normally, but the medication does little or nothing for the nausea ime. You don't say how often you're sick? If salt and vinegar crisps and mini cheddars are staying down then stick with them. I lived on ice lollies for weeks at one point, and a former member of the thread, Eallison, grew her baby on a diet of Fanta, tinned peaches and chip shop chips! You just have to go with what you can stomach. Good luck!

MotherofPearl · 18/08/2016 22:38

Rae, I think you're so right to ban houseguests for the rest of your pregnancy. You just need your own space and time.
Happy, I do feel for you, vomiting and crying after what was meant to be a nice day. It seems so unfair. Hope you manage to have a restful night, especially in this heat. I'm really struggling with the heat and I'm not even PG!

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/08/2016 22:40

Are any of you breastfeeding with medication? Ds is 1 and still bf. I'm not sick loads, and have not been sick today, but then didn't really eat til 8pm. I haven't got hg, I know that, was just looking for, i don't know really. A miracle I suppose!

I lived on ice lollies last time, had forgotten that so thank you.

And yes to tiredness. Ds hasn't slept through more than twice til 4am and I have a rotten cold keeping me up when he does sleep. Thanks for listening and your suggestions.

MotherofPearl · 18/08/2016 22:53

Notta, I'm not sure about medication and breastfeeding I'm afraid, but maybe worth chatting to your GP. Cyclizine is usually one of the first meds to try - it's been used for decades, very safe etc. Some find it very helpful but it can make you drowsy (although this usually wears off when you get used to it). Perhaps worth a try? Even if you don't have HG, if sickness and nausea are interfering with your ability to care for your DS and yourself, then I think you do need some help. Please feel free to stick around on here for support. Smile

LucindaE · 19/08/2016 13:04

Back and want to thank MotherofPearl and icklekid for doing such a wonderful job in giving advice and support. Thanks Flowers Star despite being busy with newborns and other LO's, you suffered recently and received conventional treatment and that is invaluable.
SpecialStainsCongratulations on baby boy! FlowersBrewStarCake So happy you now have your reward. You've made it to the fabled Pink Castle at the end of the Hyperemesis Horror.
Oddly enough, back at mother's/brother's place in North Wales, I found that old Snakes and Ladders board which had the pink castle at the end of the game which served as inspiration.
Welcome to NottaLotta. Sorry you are suffering badly. It must be so difficult with an older baby. There is a grey area between bad MS and Hyperemesis, and one can tip over into the other. Did you say you were checking on ketones with kesostix but it was OK? Like others, I can only recommend the juice of tinned fruit, flat coke, soda water, milk shakes, crisps, cheap ice cream, chips, and tentatively Lucozade and jelly (it can give bad heartburn but I always had that anyway) and I so agree about water melon. In fact, on another thread, someone advocated putting it through a food processor and freezing it in cubes.
mummymlb16 I second coke and crisps! A typical Hyperemesis diet, sadly. There is no possibility of eating healthily with this. It is always worth getting other meds if the ones you are on are ineffective.
Congratulations on good scan results for those who have had them, and much sympathy over migraines and feeling lonely when sick in the night.
Rae I am glad you've resolved against visitors. As usual, Mother Hen says don't overdo it.

Welcome back Lucinda! Was happy to be on here and will stick around as much as I can.
How is everyone today? Very quiet. Hope you got some sleep Happy?

Freshbreadandfaith · 19/08/2016 19:48

Congrats to special!

How is everyone?
I'm now 25 weeks. I'm expecting a boy, he is measuring big already! On the 90th centile!! I'm so huge you wouldn't believe it! Everyone I see thinks I'm already overdue!
Still on anti nausea meds. Very tired, needing to rest alot and suffering with discomfort and spd
I have been getting a sensation of like a peppermint burning sensation rising up in my oesophagus, is that reflux? What can I take for it?
My due date is 30th November xxx

MotherofPearl · 19/08/2016 20:53

Hi Fresh, gosh, 25 weeks already! And exciting to hear you're expecting a boy! Am I right in remembering that you already have a DD? Yes that sounds like acid reflux, and it often seems to accompany HG. My first suggestion is to get ranitidine. You can get it on prescription (and therefore for free), but it is also available over the counter as Zantac (or Tescos do a great own-brand ranitidine which is much cheaper). If you get it in a pharmacy get someone else to buy it for you as they may not sell it to PG women. Another benefit of the Tescos one is that it's on the open shelves! Grin If ranitidine isn't strong enough ask for a prescription for omprezole.

Sleepy you are at the top of the due date list!!

Fresh that sounds like reflux to me. I get it when I have milk, which is weird. Thanks for the reflux tip Mother, will tuck that away incase it's needed.

Notta and happy hope you're both ok today.

I'm shattered but stayed up to watch the hockey (DH and I are big hockey fans). The baby is going nuts from all the shouting at the TV Blush So, I'm feeling quite sick now, but it's entirely self inflicted. Will head to bed shortly. Have a feeling that I might regret the late night tomorrow!!

icklekid · 20/08/2016 06:13

Sleepy morning waves to everyone!

lucinda happy to help but didn't manage to pop over as much as I would have liked. Sorry about that- These newborns and toddlers demanding attention...shocking really!

fresh great to hear from you - I had a lot of people tell me I must be further on from very early. Smile and nod!

rae womens hockey? Definitely worth staying up for! What a great result.

notta no miracles I'm afraid however do try and eat- you need the energy. As others have said staying hydrated is most important but sounds like you know that.

happydays00 · 20/08/2016 06:52

Morning everyone,

A couple of very bad nights sleep for me - combination of heat and sickness I think but feeling in surprisingly good spirits today! Think it helps that yesterday I went for a look at prams and was shocked to find one that I like that fits in the back of my Mini, hoorah!

Am back to the doctors next week to try another antiemetic as after Friday's disastrous post spa day sickness I've decided that these aren't really doing much. I skipped the pills yesterday and felt the same levels of nausea and sickness but had more energy.

How is everyone doing? Waves to all

LightTripper · 20/08/2016 07:19

Hello happy, sorry to hear your pills have given up. What are you on at the moment?

Hi Notta welcome here! I would third asking your GP if there is anything you can try with BF. E.g. Cyclizine is an antihistamine and has been around a long time so there may well be some research on it.

I'm doing well. Being looked after by my lovely parents which makes me feel a bit guilty (my Mum just had her 80th birthday!) but yesterday was well enough to help with bath time and everything. But was lovely to be able to lie down while they did bedtime story etc. Felt like I was being read to as well! (About Emily Brown and "Standerley" rabbit, as my DD pronounces it!!) My sis (who gets sicker than me with pg) and her OH are coming for lunch tomorrow and we will have a big birthday celebration. Am going to try to make a tart this morning for it.

OH is in Greece. His friend who is going to the wedding may have missed his flight yesterday having got on the wrong plane (!!!) but he seems happy, and I suspect it will be good for him to have a few days off from household drudgery as it is quite full in for him at the moment!!

Hope everyone is doing OK and has a restful weekend lined up.

SleepymrsE · 20/08/2016 08:14

Morning all.

fresh that does indeed sound like reflux/heartburn. It was/is making my sickness worse. I'm on omeprazole which did work wonders for a while but more recently I've found it has got worse again and I'm back to swigging gaviscon at night as well. Def worth trying something though.

Welcome notta, sorry to hear you're suffering. It really is hard when you already have DC as you get very little time to rest. Are there others who can help with childcare? I did very little during those first few months and DS doesn't seem any worse off for it. I don't know about the breastfeeding question but if you speak to your doctor he or she should be able to give you info and hopefully there is meds that can help.

rae well done on making it through the week and staying up late last night. I spent yesterday sorting through piles and piles of paperwork that hasn't been filed away since we moved in 3 years ago. I thought it was an easy job but turns out by 8pm my back was wrecked. DH gave my back a nice rub but still sore today.

light good luck with the party tonight. It's my FIL's 60th party tonight. Being pg is a great excuse to leave early which I am sure we will do. Think I will be desperate for my bed at 10pm!

Welcome back lucinda, ickle and mop have been great in your absence. Hope all was ok at your mothers.

So, sickness hasn't been as bad as Wed night but still not great. Woken up with reflux making me cough/want to be sick. Had a few moments of sitting on the edge of the bed deep breathing. The beige diet does seem to be helping again though. Only 3 more weeks at work and at least then I can relax at home (as much as you can with a toddler) before little one makes an appearance.
