I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hello All. So sorry to hear of all-round suffering. Reebok, surely this ordeal has to be over soon? Thinking of you every day. We started this awful journey about the same time, but I so hope it ends sooner for you.
Special, how was your appointment with the GP? Sounds like you're in a pretty bad way.
Sleepy, I think you had your 16 week appointment today - how did you get on?
MrsMonkey, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to ban houseguests until after baby arrives. I had my brother to stay for a couple of nights in March, which was fine, but after that I decided no more. It's too much of a strain. You need privacy for voms, naps, etc, and the last thing you want to do is extra cooking and laundry (all the towels and bed linen afterwards).
Ickle and Amys, you both sound like you're in terrible pain with hips/SPD type issues. It does seem that women with HG are more prone to this. I wonder if it's related to excessive pregnancy hormone production?
I've just treated myself to a pedicure at local beauty salon. It's not something I do very often, but my feet were so neglected and it felt like a beauty treatment I could tolerate. Just had clear polish put on but my feet look and feel so much better.
I think Icant is being induced tomorrow, unless baby is already out. I hope she won't be affected by the junior doctors' strike (although I'm sympathetic to the doctors). Hope she's OK.

SpecialStains · 26/04/2016 16:20

Hello,

Gp was ok, though running an hour late and I was only his third patient of the day! He must have had some complicated cases before me! He was a little hesitant to give me a repeat ondansetron prescription and gave me a little lecture on the safety of it before handing it over. Otherwise, he just wanted to take bloods, which I have an appointment with the nurse for to take them tomorrow. If I wasn't so worried about the culmination of so many things at once, I'd normally wait for my very lovely gp who has never lectured on ondansetron.

Reebok I'm so sorry you're still contracting with no baby. I wish I could wave a magic wand for everyone on this thread to make pregnancy and labour very easy for you all.

Icant baby tomorrow?! You are owed a very easy birth and a very good baby!

I've been freaking myself out watching one born every minute online. Dh says I need to stop watching it, as one episode did make me sit in floods of tears. Bah, I'm not suited to this pregnancy malarky!

SaraC8 · 26/04/2016 16:24

Hope everyone is keeping ok Confused I've been lurking and have posted once on this thread. I'm 16 weeks tomorrow and still being sick every evening so usually managing brekkie and lunch. I try and drink during the day but I know I'm not getting enough, I have mentioned it to the nurse when I had my scan and also to the consultant but she just said "it'll stop by 20 weeks" Sad I've had a horrible headache since last night and can't shift it, I got some ketostix but I've never used them and can't figure out which colour I am :-/ I figured you ladies will be experts and could help. Thanks in advance Smile

Hi Sara, sorry you're still struggling with sickness. To me that looks like +2 ketones, which isn't great. +3 and you'll need IV rehydration. I can't remember if you're on meds at all? The headache is likely a result of dehydration (same as poor Cola had yesterday). If you're struggling with liquids could you try sucking or crunching ice cubes? Or ice lollies?

Meant to ask after Nutty in my previous post. How are you feeling now?

Oh good grief, only meant to post once; kept getting error message! Apologies!

SpecialStains · 26/04/2016 16:40

Sara I think you should book a gp appointment for as soon as you can - if you call now they might be able to get you in at the end of todays sessions. If not, have you a walk in centre near you? Your ketones are high and the headache is not good. In the meantime, fluids and sugar/carbohydrates should help. Can you eat ice if fluids are a problem? Any fluids will do, even unhealthy stuff like coca cola!

Sorry you're feeling rough, but don't hesitate to get proper medical advice..

SaraC8 · 26/04/2016 16:52

Thanks for the repliesSmile I've got a midwife appt tomorrow so will speak to her then. I think because I'm overweight to start with I don't look that bad if you know what I mean? Even though I've lost weight. Plus I'm usually only sick at night, on the whole I'm fine during the day apart from the odd retch Blush I've had a slice of toast and some mini cheddars this morning, and just had some watermelon now and I've got a smoothie to sip. Thanks for the advice, hopefully will get some sympathy tomorrow!!

SpecialStains · 26/04/2016 17:33

Glad to hear you have an appointment tomorrow. Make sure you stress the ketones and headache to the midwife. Watermelon is good. I remember being able to stomach that quite well in the early weeks. Have you tried eating ice? Other than the headache, how are you feeling?

SaraC8 · 26/04/2016 17:46

I've been full of cold for the past few weeks so been feeling a bit off but not bad enough to be off work. Think it's starting to go now though, touch wood. I'm a hairdresser so am quite busy at work but have been putting myself some breaks in here and there. Apart from the being sick, not too bad! Which is why I keep thinking I'm being a bit dramatic, but my mum was sick all the way through both pregnancies so I have that in the back of my mind, I can't do that! So fed up of having toast for tea and usually not even keeping that down, I just want to eat properly! Sad

SleepymrsE · 26/04/2016 17:57

Hi sara, sorry to hear you're so rough still at 16 weeks. Def mention to midwife and I suspect if ketones are high she might make you an appointment with GP to discuss meds. Other things that I have found ok, strawberry crusha and ready salted pom bears. It's all I could stomach at one point. I can now just about drink water but couldn't stand it for weeks.

My 16 week appointment went ok, blood pressure fine, urine fine - no ketones (yay) and after asking we had a listen to beans heartbeat. Was also very blase about spotting. Brown = old blood and not to worry. Probably caused by a tiny bleed a while ago, but that spotting of unknown cause is very common. Still no results of slapped cheek blood results.

amys hope you don't have to wait as long for your results but suspect it'll be the same. Sorry to hear your spd is really bad. If it's not one thing it's the other.

mop your pedicure sounds amazing! I think it'll be something that I would want to do esp further on when I know my feet will turn into fat swollen trotters. Hope you're enjoying no work.

special hope you start to feel better soon. I don't know why the doctors feel it so necessary to go on about the risks of taking the medication when it is needed to badly.

cola hope the headache clears soon. I suffered for a few weeks but touch wood they have disappeared (to be replaced with heartburn now).

ickle hope work was ok and you didn't stay too long. If you enjoy masterchef like I do, are you watching the fancy bake off programme? I enjoy watching that too even though I doubt I'll eat chocolate until I've given birth! We can enjoy the torture together.

reebok thinking of you & icant good luck. Will await news of arrivals soon.

Hi to everyone else who I have missed.

MotherofPearl · 26/04/2016 18:11

Sleepy, glad you had the reassurance of listening to baby's heartbeat. Are you taking anything for the heartburn? I'm finding ranitidine a huge help, and it's available over the counter. It's been a game changer for me. Grin about 'fat swollen trotters'! That's what I have! I'm booked to be induced next Wednesday, and so while the rest of my body will probably be in ruins by the end of it, at least my toes will look nice!

SleepymrsE · 26/04/2016 19:32

mop I've only got cheap fake gaviscon at the minute, and forgot to mention it to the midwife today. If it gets worse or carries on then I will go to the GP. I remember in my last pregnancy I was throwing up in the night towards the end due to acid reflux.

I have a child free night tonight, DS is at my parents. I'm just getting into bed now wondering if I'm in bed before my 22 month old!

SleepymrsE · 26/04/2016 19:36

Also forgot to say mop after my last birth when the midwives were walking me to the toilet (epidural meant lack of feeling in legs hours after) I was complimented on my toes so it won't go unnoticed. Bet you can't wait - in 8/9 days you'll have a baby... And be eating whatever you want, and not being sick. Hurrah!

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 26/04/2016 19:43

sara welcome.

Have you tried drinking through a straw, small sips? Sometimes very hot or very cold liquid is easier, or ice chips. Glad you've got a doctor's appt tomorrow. If they prescribe meds, please do take them; the meds are considered safe by people who are experienced in dealing with HG (despite what some generalist doctors seem to think Hmm ) and definitely safer than going without liquid.

Hoping you find a good doc!

icant good luck tomorrow, at last the end!

Reebok · 27/04/2016 03:37

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I'm currently an emotional wreck. Up in pain once again so assuming contractions are going to start up again after allowing me a few hours of sleep.

Just popping on to wish Icant luck for her induction! Lots of love x

icklekid · 27/04/2016 03:55

Well ladies yesterday evening I got as far as writing "I'm afraid I'm too shattered to write " and I was asleep!!! Now sadly wide awake so will try and catch up!

reebok sorry your awake too this early is not a fun time of the day and leads to exhaustion. Hoping that we will have 2 babies born today! Good luck icant hope the house move went smoothly too!

sleepy enjoy your child free night especially in the morning. To not have to deal with a sleepy toddler would be amazing! I do indeed watch the bake of creme de la creme or whatever it's called although mainly because they seem to make a lot of mistakes and judges are very harsh! All good television!

mop glad you too have an end date and beautiful toes as well! Got to focus on the positives! 😉

sara we all know the frustrations of just wanting to eat normally so feel free to vent away. For most the sickness does improve and become much less frequent however when that happens varies hugely. Keep going as it will get better! Sorry to hear about your cold that makes everything seem 100x worse! Eat what you can and try not to put too much pressure on yourself even if that's toast, crisps and more toast!

special I need to stop watching obem too! I find I don't get upset but much more emotionally charged for the rest of the day. Very bizarre over reactions and like I'm on edge!

Right sorry to anyone I've missed thinking of you all and hoping Wednesday is a positive day. I'm still juggling work and trying to find out how to stop feeling so exhausted by doing so little. Was sick in the morning which hasn't happened since last at work but just don't really know what else to do. I'm being stubborn and refusing to get signed off unless I get really bad. I may look at increasing ds hours for half term so that I get a rest then. Then only half a term to go and can stop thinking about work and focus on baby!

Nuttypops · 27/04/2016 07:25

Icant, wishing you a smooth and easy induction today.

squeezed · 27/04/2016 07:53

Sorry if I've missed anyone, my ability to retain information has gone now.
icant Good luck with induction. Really hope it goes well.
reebok Hope the baby gets moving, you must be exhausted.
special Good that you got your meds. I think we develop a filter to try to stop us snapping at the less helpful comments.
Sara like others have said, try snacking on foods with high water content to keep hydrated. Ice pops are also the best.
sleepy Oh I do hope you got a good night sleep last night.
mop one week to go. Hope induction goes well, you're nearly there.
Ickle I can empathise with the stubborness of being at work. With my last hospital admission DH was with me so I wasn't able to downplay how I was, so had it just sick it up and not go to work. Right decision, but still not great for my head.
Good news is that I'm much eating better, but still being sick. Think this is more down to lack of sleep and the agony of the spd aggravating the HG rather than hormones. Getting pissed off with people thinking I'm fine because I'm not being sick 5 times a day now. They don't realise how miserable the nausea is. I'm really hoping the sweep works next week or the baby just hurries up now. Feel like I've been pregnant forever and can't remember what it is like to not be in pain.

mrsmonkey14 · 27/04/2016 08:21

Just a quick one to say good luck with induction icant and reebok I hope your ordeal is over very soon. Thinking of you both and sending positive non-sickness vibes to everyone else. Xx

SaraC8 · 27/04/2016 09:53

Hope everyone is ok Flowers just done a urine sample to take to my appointment later and checked it and seems loads better than yesterday? I didn't have any tea last night as felt sick so had some mini cheddars and more watermelon and tried to drink a bit, feel a lot better today! Will still mention it to the midwife and see what she says. Thanks for all the advice ladies Smile

sara good that your ketones are down but do mention to the doctor / midwife how high they've been. And that you are struggling. Don't be brave; get the necessary help for you and the baby.

mrsamerican · 27/04/2016 12:36

Hi everyone, just a heads-up to pop in and say hi again. I've had classic "morning sickness" just being sick about 11am for about 5 days now, which I guess is an improvement from HG, but really annoying as I thought I was over it for a couple of weeks.

reebok I canNOT believe they are letting this go on. Well, actually I can, as I had the same thing, but it's so rough and exhausting. Plus, I only found one person who even believed me.

icant big hugs and best of luck with induction

Weak high fives to everyone else. X
