Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

good luck MoP and Squeezed!!!

I had a 34 week scan today (even though I'm 35 weeks tomorrow!) Baby looking nice and healthy and just under 6lbs ish... dreading having another bruiser! Consultant has referred me for physio after watching me limping about with my dad's walking stick at appointment! result! He also arranged for me to have a late GBS swab as I was GBS positive with Amy so I had to have antibiotics during labour. Hoping this swab comes back clear and that I can have an active birth instead of being "strapped" to a bed this time :/

In other news Sunday and Monday I was really nauseous, and have been dreading the return of the vomiting but touch wood its staying away... for now...

Waves to everyone, another evening almost done and closer to baby time!!!!!

squeezed Good luck in the race. You seem not to be on the list, so that took me by surprise! I knew it was close, but not that close.
amysmummy That's a good weight. Sorry about returning nausea.
SpecialStains Sorry, I had to smile at that, though it can't have been any fun.

Hello there I posted last week and haven't had the chance to thank you lovely ladies for the replies I got. I will hopefully be seeing the Dr this week to get my iron levels tested again.

The tiredness and headaches are still there as is the impressive retching. I'm finding the Cyclazine is knocking me out more than ever - am I right that it is from the anti-histamine family?

Report
SpecialStains · 04/05/2016 19:12

icant Sorry to hear Dexter has been poorly, but glad he's home! And so pleased you're feeling good at the moment! Also pleased to hear that the baby was worth it all - he must be very cute!

Water Cyclizine is indeed an antihistamine. From responses on here there are some people who love it, and some (like myself) who really get all the drowsy side effects and find it may make you sleep through some of the vomiting, but doesn't really control it otherwise. How long have you been on it? I didn't find any meds that stopped the retching, but as long as the vomiting is reduced, that's the important thing. Are you in the first trimester still? Don't underestimate how tired that makes you as well. I'm nearing the end of the second trimester and feel so, so, so, so much better than those first few weeks. Are you keeping down vitamins and if you're in the first 14 weeks, are you on a higher dose folic acid? If not, ask the Dr for a prescription of 5mg tablets. Women with hg should be on higher dose, but obviously hg isn't that common so not all HCP remember that one. Hope your iron levels are ok. Could the headaches be due to dehydration? Are you keeping any fluids down? Ice and fizzy water worked for me the best. Others recommend the syrup from tinned fruit, flat coca cola, smoothies, etc. One of the GPs I saw recommended I drank Evian instead of tap water.

Ooh thinking of squeezed and MOP, racing to the finishing line.
Welcome back water, yes cyclizine is an antihistamine. It knocked me out so much I couldn't stand up! So I can't take it. So if it is really impacting you, speak to dr about trying a different medication?

SpecialStains
Thankyou - i'm actually at week 32! I was awful with HG for the first 17 weeks, was hospitalised for rehydration and had all kinds of nasty side effects that I posted about earlier.
I have found that it seems to be creeping back again which is why I came here to see if anyone else had had a similar experience.
I can cope with the retching but as its getting worse it tends not to stop until its produced something! I wasn't too bad with cyclazine in the first trimester but I was signed off work. Now I'm in the last few months and having to take it again it's knocking me sideways!

Report
SpecialStains · 04/05/2016 21:41

Water sorry for the confusion . You're a more experienced hg veteran than I am! Gosh, I'm sorry it's back though. I did find cyclizine a little helpful, but for me ondansetron has been the best (though that's swapping cyclizine tiredness for ondansetron constipation!). Have you tried other hg meds? Have a chat with your gp about it.
It's so hard when you are sick and feeling nauseous and having to work/childcare/family life etc so you get tired, and then tiredness makes everything worse. You have my complete sympathies. Flowers
Are you keeping much down ATM?

Hi everyone,

I haven't used mumsnet before but stumbled across this thread and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm 14 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Have been off work for 5 weeks following a hospital admission with HG. Am on ondansetron and steroids as nothing else was working. Am now not vomiting thanks to the steroids but still nauseous all the time and absolutely exhausted. Am due back at work next week and have asked for a phased return but am worried about how I'll manage. I have a 45 min drive each way and my job is very physically demanding. I guess I can always go off sick if I need to but I'd rather build up and manage if I can.

The steroids are amazing for controlling the HG but they have so many side effects and thats what I'm struggling with at the moment. I'm trying to wean them but it has to be done slowly and it's a balance between weaning and HG symptoms.

Thanks for reading.

Hi Rice welcome to the thread, but sorry you're here. Glad you've got your meds sorted. Phased return sounds good. Are your work likely to be supportive? Don't rush back. Tiredness makes it all so much harder.

Spandau I hope your baby arrives soon! Sorry you feel sick again. On the upside, did someone on a previous thread say that nausea can be a sign of impending labour?! Fingers crossed for you. Smile

icklekid · 05/05/2016 05:12

rice firstly welcome and so sorry to hear that you are suffering there are some amazing ladies on this thread and hope you feel supportEd here. I'm on my second attempt at a phased return and I only work part time anyway! Please get a dr fit note stating what is reasonable eg. I'm just working mornings for 2 weeks. If your job is very physical it may be that reduced duties are also appropriate- I work in a primary school and whole class teaching would exhaust me so just doing groups at the moment. I am incredibly lucky in that my school is very supportive.

spandau not long now looking forward to hearing your baby news. My first was born on due date so is possible! Will be thinking of you and you can race squeezed and motherofpearl!

water having hg come back must be the most depressing thing- maybe I should look on that as a positive for it never leaving! Perhaps just start counting down to due date or 2 weeks after to make it manageable. I would definitely be back at the dr to see if they will try anything in combination with cyclazine or at least ammend your hours/duties at work to help with rest. It does make a huge difference to hg for all!

icant sorry pleased Dexter is now home. Hope you are all continuing to do well and eating everything that you haven't been able to for last 9 months (even if it's gone cold and has to be introduced slowly!) Hope the lupus treatment doesn't set you back too much - my only knowledge of that is from watching House so going to be useless I'm afraid!

amysmummy glad they are taking it seriously and getting you the help you need . Great news on scan, I'm certainly going to push for a more active labour this time too. I remember lying on my back being so frustrated thinking this is the worst possible position how have I got myself here!

special pleased that, eggs aside, you have been feeling a bit better that is great news. 2nd breakfast sounds like it's working well. Little and often is required to keep sickness away at lunch time for me too! Horray for looking pregnant too transition from could just be fat to definitely pregnant is always rewarding!

So I know I pushed myself too much yesterday. I went to work in the afternoon and ended up doing whole school assembly followed by staff training. Both of which required me stood up and jumping around the front of the room smiling and feeling enthusiastic when realistically I just didn't! However looking on the plus side 1) I did it! 2) I enjoyed it. All sickness and exhaustion brought on by it is worth it right? Spoke to my mum last night who is really worried about me and just thinks I should either only do mornings the rest of pregnancy or get signed off. She can't understand why I'm pushing to do more hours. I probably am mad but I love my job and want to support my colleagues. Sorry for the rant just want someone else to say they feel the same!

Thank you all for your good wishes ladies, must have done the trick! DD was born yesterday at 7:05pm, weighing 8lb 4oz! Had such a short rushed labour - the prostin tablet went in at noon; nothing at all happened until around 4pm when I had a few twinges. Proper contractions set it at 5:30, full dilated at 6:15, baby born 7:05. No time for anything but gas and air! I had one huge vomit shortly after delivery but now feeling great - the taste and the nausea are finally gone!
Squeezed and Spandau, you'll not be long now I'm sure. Take heart everyone, it's so worth it. I feel so happy this morning. Thanks so much to all of you for your support, especially the ever-lovely Lucinda. Will pop back on the thread when I'm home and settled.

Mother huge congratulations! I'm impressed with the speedy labour. You must feel so relieved to feel better. Very happy to hear that HG is worth it! Enjoy your little one Flowers

Special glad you're feeling less sick now and are off the ondansetron! Great news!

Amys I'm so glad you're being referred to a physio!

ICant sorry to hear that Dexter has been back to hospital- glad that he's home now.

Water just wanted to say that like Special, I find ondansetron works better for me (though I am still taking cyclizine, and the constipation is horrible).

Welcome rice! I'm in a similar position to you r.e. work. I'm also going to ask for a phased return. I hope it goes well for you.

spandeau I've got everything crossed that your little one makes an appearance soon!

Thanks ickle, I will definitely ask for a phased return. I know exactly what you mean about work- I cried in the doctors on Friday and said "I love my job!"the doctor looked at me and went "yes, but you can't do it at he moment, can you?"

Not much to report here. Feeling ok today, just bored. I've just realised that I haven't been outside apart from to go to hospital/ the the Drs for exactly 6 weeks now! So, I've decided to dose myself up, and if I manage to eat breakfast, see if I can walk the quarter of a mile to the polling station. This is either a brilliant idea or a really stupid one...

waterjungle It is disappointing that for some it comes back in the third tri.
It's almost never as bad as earlier on,but nasty enough. What did the d''s say about the headaches? AsSpecial says, dehydration can set in quickly and it might now be that.
icklekid You can guess what Mother Hen is going to do. Really sorry, but I agree with your mother. You must be selfish.
spandau Sorry to hear of the lack of action..
squeezed You are very brave to DTD. I did NOT feel up to playing the siren.

Just popping on to say congrats to Mop! Such wonderful news! Flowers

Icant thanks for the congrats. Sorry dexter is so unwell and about the lupus. Really hope you get some well deserved respite now.

Squeezed and spandau, I'm looking forward to hearing your news. I Defo agree that Lucindas due date list helps.

Baby reebok is doing well apart from the fact that she's unable to have a bowel movement since birth. So if she doesn't soon, she will have to go back into hospital. Fx for her. Other than that, we are adjusting gradually to our new life as a family of 4.

I hope it's ok if I pop back on now and then once I'm settled to offer encouragement to those suffering. In the meantime, I am always thinking of you and hoping you are managing as well as can be. Remember this too shall pass and soon you will have a beautiful baby to cuddle. Flowers
