Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Madrigal Still no news as yet and a friend who was due the day after me has just had her baby Angry but I'm not impatient no siree Wink

squeezed Congratulations! How lovely :-)

Well I'm having a boy so I concur that I don't think there's much to that theory I'm afraid!

My HG, whilst still lurking around, definitely got a whole lot better in the last trimester. The thing that gets me down the most at the moment is the constant coughing and throat clearing to rid myself of the excess saliva/mucus and the ever-present horrid taste in my mouth that disappears momentarily when I'm eating but is straight back afterwards to annoy me at all other times!

Never mind, ladies, we will all get there! Flowers

Madrigal I think the incidence of Hyperremesis is a few percentage higher if expecting a girl, but there's only about seven per cent in it, or something.
I do know that one of the people who suffered worst on this thread Kalidasa had a boy each time. I can't You now have that unenvitable title, but not sure whether you're having a boy?
squeezed Sorry about bad day and odd looks over loud vomit (why do people stare about that in a maternity department?!) but happy news about scan. Tipped you upside down? That does sound bizarre!
spandau Oh dear, missed your last post, and some sort of an improvement is long overdue.
SpecialStains and Madrigal People worry about the caffeine, so I'm glad there's a reassuring book.
Wedgie I too, and still horrified by the way that they just left you to suffer last time.
eallisonI hope your mastitis is improving. Of course, small babies rely hugely on scent. I'd nearly forgotten that!
TwoDrifters Oh dear, it looks as if baby is delaying for a grand entrance.
Waves to all. Sorry if I've missed anyone/cross posted.

Having something of a relapse but DD is making me smile. After I told DD I had to stop playing because I was going to be sick she said "Hope you have a lovely sick mummy". Previously she has asked me to "do a green sick". You know that you're vomiting a lot when a 2year old is talking like this Smile

Hi all, sorry not been on. Really struggled after Friday at work.

And today had awful contraction pains..lasted an hour. Was so bad I couldn't stand and literally on the floor on all fours in tears. Stopped after an hour. Called triage and they said if I got 6 or more again in an hour to go in for monitoring. And also said to lay on left and drink more water. Hopefully it's nothing. Fed up of all of these scares though. Only 24 weeks. Shouldn't be this hard. Sorry for the 'me' post. Love to you all x

Hi all, just caught up on new thread! Haven't been on much in past few weeks as DS has been super clingy and whinges when I try and take a minute out to MN! As I'm well enough to look after him now, but not well enough to do it properly, he spends most of the day climbing on me while I'm curled up in a ball on the sofa. Poor thing doesn't understand why I'm being so boring.

Sorry to hear all still suffering, and some new names too. But posts like glitterball thinking of ttc so soon must spur us on! Personally I'll be getting me tubes tied asap!

Reebok I hope hospital have been helpful re: your pains, sounds ghastly and scary, don't hesitate to keep getting in touch with them with any changes.. I know you have form for brave-facing it but it does sound worth monitoring and keeping them updated.

I'm 29 weeks tomorrow. Nausea still awful but throwing up minimal so have weaned off ondansetron over the past couple of weeks to try and get my digestive system back on track. Nothing helps my nausea anyway.

yes, Expecting Better is really good. not 100% accurate on HG mind you but a lot of really interesting stuff in there.

squeezed big grats on the Pink variety =)

As far as I've read, the literature seems to think that HG can strike equally happily no matter what colour your Passenger is. Only if you get twins, then it's more likely you'll be painting the loo new shades

Hello everyone. I've been suffering since week 4 and am now 8 weeks. Constant nausea. Been on buccastem, metoclopramide and domperidone and nothing is working. Called GP today and she's prescribing something else that I take at night as its a mild sedative (can't remember the name).

I asked about ondanestron and she said she wouldn't prescribe it as its only licenced for cancer patients but I'm sure I've read lots of women here are on it. How did you get it and how do I get it if this next drug doesn't work?

Morning Ladies,

Sorry haven't posted in a while I had suspected water infection plus keytones in my urine so GP switched my meds to stemetil syrup - no bacteria in my urine so water infection was out. Must be my body changing to accommodate two babies. I am now the proud owner of a girdle!

Oh sorry - MCDA yes identical twins :)

I managed 3 days at work last week, the most I have done since last October before I found out.

So far the only thing (other than the syrup) is eating through the sickness, loading up on carbs, lots of water.

Hope everyone is ok? x

Just popping on to say sorry for silence. Busy and nauseous few days. In haste, Cola, you're right that many of us on the thread are on Ondansetron. As far as I know no drugs are specifically licensed for use in pregnancy, including the ones your GP has already prescribed. However, they are widely used in pregnancy and all regarded as safe, including Ondansetron. Probably the best way to get it is through an EPU if you have one near you? Some you can self-refer or you get sent there via A&E if you go in with ketones of 3+ or more. Once a consultant at hospital has prescribed Ondansetron your GP should be able to go on reissuing (or at least that's been my experience). But even Ondansetron, excellent though it is for cutting down the voms, doesn't seem to touch the nausea. As Shoop says, nothing much does, sadly. Good luck.
Gold, eating through the sickness with carbs sounds good.
Reebok, sorry to hear about further contraction scares. Hope you're OK now.
Icant, thrilled to hear you had one sickness-free day! If anyone deserves it it's surely you.
Squeezed, great news about the girl and your scan!
Madrigal, hope you're stabilising after your horrid relapse?
TwoDrifters, can't be much longer now, surely?! We're all cheering you over the finish line, which is now in sight.
Ealli, hope the mastitis has eased now? Sounds pretty painful.
Sorry for anyone rudely neglected, must dash and try to do some work.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 11/01/2016 10:20

cola all the meds used in pregnancy are offlabel (not officially for that purpose) but meds are very often used offlabel and the preg ones are considered very safe after sometimes decades of use by 1000's and 1000's of women.

You -can- have ondansetron ..... I can't get to the Nice guidelines as im overseas. Could someone maybe copy + paste the Meds that the NICE say are okay to use in preg? Ondansetron is in there.

NICE is the governmental body for best practice in medicine cola. The recommendations are considered pretty hefty.

Also if you like I can dig up the 2013 Danish study where a few thousand Danish women took ondansetron. the overall result was that there was no risk of birth defects.

The doctor might be giving you either cyclizine or promethazine. Both are old fashioned anti-histamines and if they help at all, can help quite a lot. HG is not fully understood (afaik) but they are sure that the body is reacting too strongly to the pregnancy hormones, so the anti-histamines can help calm that reaction

good luck, keep going and take it easy as you are able to ... rest helps a lot too.

amys good luck at the docs, sounds a horrendous day

good grief gold I hadn't heard of girdles since my adoptive mother died! :)

ealli hope the mastitis is easing

Cola - If you're taking it once a day at night, I think you'll be on Avomine/promethazine. It's an old class of antihistamine. Sadly didn't work as well for me as cyclizine has, but it made me incredibly drowsy all day. But then, other people haven't responded to cyclizine as well as I seem too. It does seem to be very luck of the draw with regards to what is effective.

Nice guidelines are the gold standard for treatment (I.e what a Dr should be doing when you present with a condition). If its on the nice guidelines and is appropriate to you, they shouldn't refuse it. However, you may need to try a week on promethazine/cyclizine and for that to be unsuccessful before they'll agree to ondansetrone. I thought this was because ondansetrone is expensive but I think it's off licence now (can be manufactured by anyone) so it shouldn't be as expensive as it once was.

Cola Welcome. You've had lots of good advice already, but it might be worth, too, phoning 924 7638 2020 Pregnancy Sickness Support for advice how to get Ondanestron. They'll have to phone you back, but they will, and they've helped lots of women on here to get meds.

Hi all.

ondansetron is fine for pregnant women, as has been said by many. Be more insistent with your gp, or do as lucinda suggested and ring the pregnancy support helpline. If you do go back to your gp, remind her that a mummy that can't eat/drink and is thus severely dehydrated and starved is not good for baby. Ondansetron was a complete game changer for me, cut dowm voms and helped nausea (didn't get rid, but certainly helped a lot!).

Mastitis pretty much gone, thanks all!

Back from gp. Think I saw a junior doctor as had 20min appointment and she was very thorough! She has signed me off for another week. Have a uti (its so painful) and have had blood taken for a variety of tests.
Meh. I thought this was meant to be a magical time, and I was meant to have a pregnancy glow. Instead I've lost weight, pale skin, dark eyes, dehydrated, chapped lips and walking funny as my pee pipe hurts!
