Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Ooh, Rachel I second onceameer on the melon thing. On days I've really struggled with fluids, I've normally been able to eat melon. I did like ice pops for a while, but then had a sickness session after having two in a row and I've gone off the taste. Full fat coke has been my favourite so far (I'm really healthy normally, I promise!).

Racheljayne You are a veteran, then, and congratulations on the courage to go for it again. Do you find ice lollies or jelly any use?
Great liquid suggestions from everyone.I so agree about full sugar coke particularly. In fact, travel reps recommend it sipped flat for 'Spanish Stomach' or whatever they call it. A woman on another thread recommended melon put in a blender and frozen as cubes; she said it was the only thing she could endure for a while.
Ican't Oh dear, like others, I do hope it isn't an infection. You've had so misfortunes.
spandau Are all your LO's back at school? I hope at least you might get a rest during the daytime.
Reebok How are things? I hope OH is being good Grin.
SpecialStains You have every right to a bit of self pity. It's SO Not Fair!!!!!
OnceaMeer I think we have had two dry days since early November hereabouts. If I knew how to build an ark, I'd be tempted...Grin
MotherofPearl I hope the sickness is easing off? Or is it still going strong?
eallison Great advice as ever, and from OnceaMeer.
Madriagal That is happy news. It's so nice to buy some things.

Hi everyone. Just had a really peculiar reaction. DH and I just got home (I managed half a day in work today) and something hideous stinks in the kitchen which as soon as I opened the door had me wretching and gagging awfully. Never had that before. DH is now scrubbing the kitchen with bleach whilst adamantly saying nothing smells. It's such a strong reflex! I've got some albas oil on a tissue under my nose. Feels like the whole house stinks.

I've picked up some cyclizine, will start them tonight. Any experiences (good or bad) with it?

special sometimes we all need to have a day or few lying on the bathroom floor feeling sorry for ourselves! You are doing so well growing your little baby.

rachel meto is one that many of us have had. Safe for baby, but in rare instances can be dangerous for mum - if your legs start twitching, stop taking it immediately and speak to your doctor. onceameer knows more than me, but it is very rare!

cola that is, unfortunately, completely normal with HG. Smells that are normally unnoticeable or nice can turn your stomach. I once spent a lot of time sat On the floor in tesco smelling mens deodorant to try and find one my husband could use that didn't make me heave!

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 12/01/2016 18:49

rachel metoclopramide is good for a lot of people, though if you get twitchy/restless legs ring your doctor straight away (it's absolutely safe for the baby though).

Oh dear cola that smell is very HG isn't it :( is your husband's sense of smell usually reasonable? (my husband's isnt, so if he says he doesn't smell something, I still double check).

Cyclizine is a good first line med. It's an old-style antihistamine and it works to calm the body's overreaction to the HcG hormone and other preg hormones. Give it 3 days to build up in your system. Some people do get very sleepy on it, which might pass or might not. If that's not okay then there are other meds.

If you can ask your husband to get Vitamin B6 from the chemists, it's supposed to work very well with the cyclizine (I don't understand how, but the specialists in HG seem to rate it).

eallison88 · 12/01/2016 18:55

Oh and cola, cyclizine is the first line if defence meds wise. Some find it works really well, some find it less so. Some find it works for bit, then becomes less effective. If it doesn't work or becomes less effective, don't panic, just go back to gp and ask for something different.

Colabottle10 · 12/01/2016 19:03

Thanks. It's the third med I will be trying. Already tried metoclopramide (didn't help) then went on to domperidone (which i use for the sickness associated with long term migraines) though can only take this for a week and then have to come off. So the cyclizine is the third to try.

GP has already flatly refused to prescribe ondanestron.

Odd theyve waited til now for that. Fingers crossed it works

SpecialStains · 12/01/2016 19:25

Cyclizine is the third I tried too. Hopefully it'll give you some relief. It does seem to help me, but I am having a bad day today. I'm finding that sulking and whining is helping the most!

Special, you're entitled to feel sorry for yourself. HG is horrendous, and for many people it's the sickest they've been in their whole lives. If you're lucky enough to be fit and healthy normally (I am, although lord knows it feels a distant memory at the moment) then being debilitated by weeks and then months of illness comes as a horrible shock. I guess the only comfort is that it will end; there's a definite cut-off point.
Thanks for asking after me Lucinda. I'm staggering on. Sickness seems to have crept back up to once a day, but reluctant to go back to higher dose of Ondanestron because of the constipation. I'm only taking one tablet a day now. The nausea is pretty much 24/7, as is the exhaustion, but that's nothing compared to the early hellish weeks some of our newbies are currently going through. I'm 23+2 now.
Onwards, comrades!

Hi MoP! Back ache seems to have eased, I was lugging DD about on Sunday so I'm wondering whether that had something to do with my back... The vomiting bug must have been a 24 hour thing, just nausea today, so glad it hasn't set me back (touch wood)!

Been thinking about twodrifters today, I wonder if its action stations?!

I'm 19 weeks Thurs, seems like a lifetime ago I stumbled into this thread a sweaty, vomiting mess at 6 weeks Grin

Has anyone else had the horrid metallic taste in their mouth? How do I make it go away? Boiled sweets don't help, and although I'm tempted to keep eating grapes until I'm sick, I don't think its the best plan.
Wails I don't feel well!

Yes oh god that taste was just .... UGH. mega mega ugh. the only solution to the taste was to ... er .... keep eating sweets ... which obviously didn't work at first but did later on.

do you get the excess saliva too? Apparently the more you spit, the more you make so it's a balance between spitting if it gets to the point of making you sick, but not before. Whoopee.

sockamnesty acyclovir tablets are anti-virals as far as I can see. I'm no HCP but that sounds slightly odd to me. it might be worth a call to the Pregnancy Sickness Support line and leaving a message asking the elderly, very experienced HG doctor Tony there to ring you back (024 7638 2020) and asking him about it. It seems to be pretty harmless (Federal Drug Category B) but not sure what actual use it is

Sucking on an ice cube as I type. Its sort of helping. I've read about people rinsing their mouths with bicarb of soda, but I fear that would just make me sick. Anyone tried that?
