I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

squeezed Don't worry too much, I remember that foam; I managed to produce a lot of it once. I think anti acids can make it?

That is all

MotherofPearl · 24/01/2016 19:08

Squeezed, just seconding what Lucinda says about the foam. Sadly seems to be yet another delight of HG to add to the amusing litany that Spandau posted a couple of days ago. I've had a few foam voms, and retching for ages too. Since I can only stomach fizzy drinks - mainly fizzy water or sparkling elderflower - the first few retches are always accompanied by very loud burps. Blush
I wonder how Special is doing, we've not heard from her for a while?
I've had a better day today. Intense nausea this afternoon, but no actual voms. I've told DP that all forms of pasta are off the menu until the baby is out!

MadrigalElectromotive · 24/01/2016 19:12

squeezed I have also had foam and haven't popped my clogs yet so I don't think it is anything sinister.

Hope you get some rest soon spandau.

Glad you are a bit better today MOP - I agree - pasta in all its forms can Fuck. Off. Grin

No voms today which has been nice, but I have been feeling horribly sick and also passed out this morning after getting out of bed. Confused Going to ring the midwife about it tomorrow as I've been feeling dizzy on and off all day. Just what you need when contending with HG! Hmm

WaitingforaRainbow07 · 24/01/2016 19:29

Thank you for asking. Still getting worse, just can't seem to stop the retching! A lot of the time nothing comes out but I just keep randomly retching constantly, it's so annoying. Feel like I'm constantly trying to stop myself iyswim?
Did anyone else find it easier to eat than drink? I can just about stomach bland beige foods (thank you to whoever mentioned mini cheddars!) but the thought of drinking is horrible and I can't stand the thought of anything. Managed a milkshake earlier as it was thick so more like food!
This is still a lot better than last time but I can't remember when it got really bad before. I didn't eat or drink for weeks and would still vomit constantly, just blood and bile. I completely wrecked my throat and stomach, burst all the blood vessels in and around my eyes and weighed less at the end of my pregnancy than pre pregnancy! Ended up passing out and being rushed to hospital. I really really feel for all of you ladies xxx

SpecialStains · 24/01/2016 19:34

Hey all!
Congratulations twodrifters! Though sorry to hear it was a difficult time.
Squeezed - I've had one foam vomit before, I don't know what caused it and thought I was malfunctioning!
I'm doing well. Not completely right, but doing OK. My mum has been up to help with the house move, and she's been fab. She has done so much with packing, moving and unpacking and then she's been cooking for us as well. I really enjoyed a spag bol tonight. She suffered with hg with me, so its nice to have someone sympathetic around. I'll miss her when she goes home on Tuesday.
Got my booking in appointment tomorrow.

Hope everyone else is doing OK.

Reebok · 24/01/2016 20:53

Hi all, had a rubbish weekend. On top of the nausea etc have a yucky cold which adds to the nausea. My voice still hasn't returned so not going into work tomorrow. I'm past caring about work now. Had enough of it. Bosses don't care about my health anyway and are clearly glad I won't be back after maternity.

I've had that foam too. As mop said it's an unfortunate side effect.

Sucks to be 26 weeks and still feeling shitty. Wish these 14 weeks would hurry up so baby would arrive. To be honest, with the way I'm feeling, I will be grateful if she arrives any time after 37 weeks!

Another day down. Hope you are all doing as well as you can.

spandau1980 · 24/01/2016 21:08

Had a stomach bug yest and now have dd cough .. great :(
Baby doing the lambada (sp?l)
Tonight Grin
No matter how grim I am I can feel she s growing .. every day few days more powerful

Reebok I second the baby early thing... anytime after 32 weeks I think baby ll be a ok these days but 37 weeks would be ideal lol but I doubt it dd was 40 plus 4 and induced .. son was 40 plus 2 and twins were only 36 plus 6 as was induced due to one being greedy or I'd have gone term they said :p

Is it just me but even reading the word PASTA makes me wanna be sick

Ewwwwww

icklekid · 25/01/2016 06:17

Can I joiI please? Had sickness with first pregnancy however was managable with medication. This time I can't even keep that down. Constantly sick and not keeping anything down. Dr helpfully advised that other than keeping tabs on ketones there is nothing they can do! Have hardly been in work since Jan and just feel useless. Anyone else struggling with a toddler and hg?

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 25/01/2016 08:43

Welcome icle, hg is terrible but youll fimd loads of good advice on here. A few of us have hg and little ones, my ds is 3. Anyone able to help with childcare? How far along are you? Flowers

icklekid · 25/01/2016 08:53

Sadly only 9 weeks so a long way to go yet! Ds goes to childminder mon-wed when I'm meant to be at work however that's not really happening at the moment.

Just tried to have a yoghurt with the hope that something liquid like might stay down.

LucindaE · 25/01/2016 09:47

Oh dear, suffering all round. Sorry to hear about cold and unsympathetic work, Reebok. Ruby and others, that test seems to be handled as unsympathetically as can be, so I had to smile at your account of vomiting on the personnel. Thinking of you all, and it's particularly hard for Rainbow with the stress of having to wait to see if you've had an mmc.
Icklekid Welcome. Sorry the dr is so blase. Do invest in some kesostix to check for the early stages of dehydration if you don't have them in already, as you've suffered before. What meds has s/he put you on? There are a variety to choose from (I know that is not grammatical, but I'm sure nbody cares).
Apologies that I have to rush off. Back soon.

Ickle kid ... welcome and commiserations

I have a d d who is 3 in Feb. . It's been so difficult and still is

I have a horrid cough and been sick twice all ready all over my self first time :(
Keep.weeing myself too.thanks to coughing ... wonderful :(
Today is going to be a long day .. toddler here plus one I'll 11 year old too.... sob ssob

icklekid · 25/01/2016 11:24

I'm on cyclazine at the moment, it did help last pregnancy. Probably would if I could keep it down this time...good idea to get some kesostix. Got a phone appointment with Dr as just can't carry on at the moment

SpecialStains · 25/01/2016 14:51

Messed up my booking in appointment today. Went along for the appointment, lovely community midwife, halfway through I mentioned that I wanted to give birth at a different hospital to our local one, and apparently that means that the booking in appointment I had today at my gp was worthless, and I need to have a booking in at the hospital further away...its the same bloody form and set of notes regardless of hospital! I don't understand why I need to do it again!
Also, why did nobody tell me at my gp practice about this different procedure? Now annoyed because there's no way I'm getting the 12 week scan at 12 weeks. They also refused to acknowledge that my private scan date puts me a week ahead of LMP date, and so I think I'm going to end up being around 14 weeks before my first scan. Grrrrr. Why can't NHS services work better with each other?! Asides from my booking in and two scans which will be done at the further away hospital, all my community care will be done by my local midwives, so why not the booking in?!

LucindaE · 25/01/2016 17:42

Icklekid I do hope they put you on something else, and as you know well, keep an eye out for getting dehydrated by getting those kesostix it can happen so quickly. In fact, you may already be so if you haven't retained much liquid over the last day or so. Do you have headache, blurred vision, dry skin, dry mouth, dark scanty urine, etc?
SpecialStains That sounds so annoying! It is ironical you enjoyed a -sorry, spandau and everyone - spag bol, as poor MotherofPearl had a horrific experience with one the same day, and I join others in having had a Horrific Pasta Experience! I am so glad meds are working well for you now.
spandau I meant to say how I had to smile at your dirge:

'Constipation catastrophe
'Bad smell bedlam
Pee yourself party
Uti ugly
Can't shower or do teeth calamity
Dehydration drama
Isolation island'

Hyperemesis Poem!
Waiting I hope you are managing? So stressful.
SomebodySedateMe How are things?
Reebok I'm very glad you stayed at home. Why should you struggle in if they're not being helpful and you feel foul and are leaving soon, anyway?
There is a particularly nasty cold and coughs going about that seem to last for weeks rather than days, just what people on here don't need!
Ican't I do hope you are getting good treatment?
squeezed Ruby* * SPD sounds terrible.

I've thrown 3 times today amd trying to hold.onto some toast
Acid reflux.is horrid after honey and lemon (the acidic juices)

Is there any cough sweets I can take at all ??????

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 25/01/2016 19:25

Im so sorry for not having caught up since friday.

twodrifters wonderful news that tinydrifter is alright. Very pleased to hear it. Not really the sort of ending you want to a pregnancy anyway, never mind an HG one!

waiting, if you're still here this is the list of effective meds:

cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine; can make you sleepy)
Metoclopramide (empties the stomach faster, less to upchuck)
Domperidone (similar)
Prochlorperazine (stemetil/Avomine/Buccastem) (works on your sense of balance; also a travel remedy; can be good for some people).
Promethazine (called Phenergan)(stronger old fashioned anti-histamine, also sleepy-making)
Ondansetron (the strongest and many people find the best, but causes constipation).

Phenergen is actually a stronger version of cyclizine so Im not sure cyclizine will do much :/ Ondansetron -is- the best but doctors are often reluctant to prescribe it. If your doctor won't, perhaps try prochlorperazine with the promethazine, if the interactions are okay (they should be, but do check that with the doc!)

As everyone has said, sorry to hear that it's so bad and with possibly a difficult outcome

somebodysedateme when you upchuck, crouch. Put your crotch onto your heel; it stops the pee coming out (or hop into the bath unclothed, but you never really get time to strip do you). Agreed get some cyclizine if you can.

icklekid welcome .. you really can get more meds than cyclizine. The NICE guidelines that Mother Hen posted are the best ones, can you print that out and take it to the doctor's? And maybe take an advocate with you, your partner or a close friend who's seen how bad it is? If you can get meds, it's worth it; there's some evidence that early meds can take the edge off the worst.

Hope everyone is surviving. Thinking of everyone. ruby you make HG seem almost funny (almost); you could write a book on your experience!

squeezed · 25/01/2016 20:04

I've been given metoclopramide to be taken with promethazine. I read on the pregnancy sickness website that metoclopramide can cause twitching and other side effects if taken for more than 5 days. Does anyone have experience of this? I'm having a hormone overload at the moment and not really thinking rationally.

PeppaPigStinks · 25/01/2016 20:42

Iklekid sorry to hear you are unwell. I've just come out of hospital (would have been tonight too but the needed the bed so literally just got home). We must be nearly due the same time as I am also nine weeks.

Sorry to hear everyone is so poorly.

Does anyone have any tips for constipation- I fear this is the next hurdle I am about to encounter!

LucindaE · 25/01/2016 22:03

Peppa How long have you been in, poor you? Did you manage to post when in hospital? Sorry you had to leave before fully cured. Have they changed the meds?

OP posts:
eallison88 · 25/01/2016 22:03

squeezed it's a side effect that's very rare. But if you get twitchy legs you stop taking the meds immediately. As far as I'm aware, there are no risks for baby.

peppa eat what fruit you can. I think the reason I never had to constipation too badly when I was on ondansetron is cos I was surviving mainly on tinned peaches and the juice. Any fruit you fancy, eat it.

special that must be so frustrating for you. Yes the nhs is brilliant, but it definitely has its problems!

icklekid · 26/01/2016 04:12

Gp sent me to hospital due to ketones. Managed to get some more water down (not throw it up!) before I got there so wasn't so bad when got there didn't feel was necessary to hydrate on drop. Got prescribed Ondansetron and got to go back on Thursday as they were still concerned. Ended up having to pick ds up from childminders and take him to a friends who bathed him and put him to sleep. Felt awful for him 😯

eallison will be buying tinned fruit on your recommendation now!

Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome!

Reebok · 26/01/2016 07:20

Welcome ickle. Sorry to hear you're suffering but glad you're on ondasetron. Be prepared for terrible constipation. Nothing has working for me so I've had to rely on enemas since I was 6 weeks. I'm now 26 weeks.

Peppa you poor thing. Sending you hugs. As I type this dd is watching Peppa pig!

Home again today. Was up from 1 - 5.30am with a wheezing cough and temperature. Feel awful so definitely no work for me today.

Spandau the cough makes me feel extra nauseous too and vomit. Plus pee myself. Sucks doesn't it.

Hope everyone else is feeling ok...mop, barmee, shoop, icant, madrigal and everyone else.

Waves to mother hen, meerka and ealli x

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 26/01/2016 07:50

squeezed that is right yes.

Most people don't get the effects, but if you do then stop the meds until you've talked to the doctor or (just as good and maybe better in this situation) the pharmacist.

It's a very good med which is why it's prescribed and it's entirely safe for the baby, but ocasionally it does have these nasty side effects which can stick around (even more occasionally).

ickle glad you're on ondanstron

peppa about constipation, some fruit can help but most people with ondan. end up taking a laxative. Other people know the possible meds better but I think fybogel, movicol (or english equivilent) and there's another prescription one that is very popular.

reebok sorry to hear about the bad sleep, it reallly sucks doesn't it. Glad you're taking it easy today.
