I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

TwoDrifters · 23/01/2016 11:43

Good morning everyone, my apologies for radio silence, my life has been quite a saga of late.

Basically nothing with my birth went according to plan, LittleDrifter was eventually born by emergency C-section 2 days after I went into hospital and then admitted to intensive care and after that, the neo natal unit for specialist treatment and observation. He stayed there a few days and we finally left the hospital 9 days after arriving, having aged decades!

Anyway, we are home now, he is gorgeous and we are attempting to calm and de-traumatise him gradually. Cranial osteopath is booked for next week!

Most importantly for this board (!) here is my HG update: I was sick as we left for the hospital to have him and sick as he was being born (!) but absolutely NOTHING since, it's as if someone flicked a switch in me and turned the hyperemesis off. It's amazing!!! WE CAN ALL GET THERE!!! SmileGrin

I actually hadn't noticed, I was so stressed and upset about LittleDrifter that it only occurred to me about 3 days afterwards that I hadn't been sick! So the day will come for you all, I promise! Flowers

LucindaE · 23/01/2016 12:20

WaitingforRainbow7 I am so sorry that you have had such tragic experiences with miscarriage. I only had one mmc, and I found it traumatic.
It is too bad that you are suffering now when things may have gone wrong.
Much sympathy. As you had Hyperemesis with your daughter, I'm sure you know the various comping mechanisms, and what works for you in the way of drinks, etc. Keep us informed what's going on, as the cliche says 'Don't be lonely'.
TwoDrifters Lovely to hear from you. We've all been wondering about you. I was a bit worried that something might have gone wrong, and so glad it's sorted out now. It sounds traumatic, what an awful ending for a pregnancy made stressful by Hyperemesis, but I am so glad you and LO are fine now. I have only known one other unlucky woman who had the misfortune to have to attempted inductions fail, but for all I know, it may happen more often than I know.
Got to rush off for an appointment, sorry not to comment on other posts; back soon.

Huge congratulations TwoDrifters! I'm so thrilled for you, although sounds like you've had a very stressful time. But what a relief the HG is finally gone! Hope you are enjoying lots of lovely newborn cuddles with LittleDrifter, and hope he's OK now.

amysmummy12345 · 23/01/2016 13:47

Congrats two !! Sorry to hear about the awful delivery! Hopefully you can put it all behind you now, and that there are no lasting effects xxx

Reebok · 23/01/2016 14:05

Congrats two! Such lovely news (obviously minus the traumatic birth)...glad to hear Hg has gone and you are both ok. Enjoy food and drink on our behalf...in fact please, chug a whole glass of water just for me! Smile

Well I'm run down again and have lost my voice. Cannot seem to catch a break! On the positive side no vom this morning! 26 weeks now...going to attempt to cut down on the ondansetron. Cannot handle the constipation. I never want to see an enema again!!!

WaitingforaRainbow07 · 23/01/2016 14:53

Thank you so much for your replies, it means a lot as we have not told anyone so feel very alone! I will ask the doctor for cyclizine and see if that helps. Every day seems to be worse than the last and today I don't seem to be able to open my mouth to eat drink or even talk without violently retching. Every single smells sends me into a fit of retching too. Just want to lay in a white silent non smelling room and be left alone. Any stimulation such as the tv etc. Makes me feel worse. Roll on Thursday when we find out what's going on! Xx

SomebodySedateMe · 23/01/2016 16:12

Afternoon everyone.

Dipping in here because at 36+2 my hyperemesis has returned. I suffered terribly until 26 weeks but I've had 10 weeks of respite! Requested to be put back on cyclizine yesterday but the MW thinks I should just tough it out.

Trying to stay hydrated but of course keeping nothing down. I've got the added complication of gestational diabetes now too so all of my go to foods are off limits. Stuck between a rock and a hard place - do I eat something I can possibly keep down knowing it'll send my blood sugar sky high?

On a final charming note my pelvic floor is clearly already screwed because I pee every time I throw up.

eallison88 · 23/01/2016 17:11

ruby you do make me chuckle. I bought raspberry leaf tea the afternoon before I went into labour at 7 am...never managed to drink it but convinced buying it kicked my body into action: the smell was horrid, I can't imagine what it actually tastes like!

two how lovely to hear of littledrifters arrival and lack of sickness. Sorry it was so eventful, but good to hear all home now. I hope the de-trauma-ing goes well.

waitinh that sounds so difficult. Have you tried podcasts or comedy radio? I found music quite difficult to listen it, but worked my way thru the comedy section on the I player radio app! Also listening to the telly with my back to it was quite good.

reebokplease be careful cutting down ondansetron; I know the constipation is rotten but I dont want you getting wider again!

somebody please ignore your midwife and go and see a gp and ask for meds. You do not need to tough it out, silly woman. The peeing gets better when babies out, I promise. Though my pelvic floor definitely isn't what it once was!

LucindaE · 23/01/2016 17:22

SomebodySedateMe Welcome, sorry you are suffering again, after a respite, that's so discouraging. I think you should ask the doctor for the cyclizine again if the midwife's going to be awkward about it, I hope I don't sound bossy. The last month can seem endless to people who are suffering this. How are jelly, ice cubes, ice lollies, sips of flat coke, the fruit or juice of tinnned fruit etc, cheap ice cream or bits of melon or nibbles of crisps?
Peppa Sorry you feel bad again. As above for some foods that have worked for many - as others say, tinned fruit or its juice (I found apricots good as well as peaches - or cheap ice cream.
RubyReins What a supremely annoying woman! Why the condescension from some medical people? A doctor (recently; not when I was pregnant) kept calling me ' my dear girl'. Why???? I suppose in a few years I'll be 'old girl'...
amysmummy and MotherofPearl How are things today?
Reebok Sorry you feel generally rubbishy; how long to maternity leave now?
Ican't I am sorry to hear you are still stuck in hospital. That is grim.
Still really pleased about TwoDrifters' news; Flowers not, as others say, the trauma, of course.
spandau You are doing really well at ploughing on, as is everyone, who has the disappointing lingering of this scourge...
MotherofPearl When does maternity leave start (THAT leave, so begrudged by your manager)?
Waves to OnceaMeer and eallison
Apologies if I've overlooked anyone.

MotherofPearl · 23/01/2016 18:52

Thanks for asking Lucinda, unfortunately I'm feeling pretty bad today. Have (another) streaming cold, and then had a violent vom session this afternoon which made me miserable. I got cocky about eating a wider range of foods and DP made spaghetti bolognaise for lunch, and I ventured to have a bowl. Needless to say it all came back. Doubt I'll ever be able to face spag bol again. Feeling very sorry for myself I'm afraid. Thinking of a very early night.
25 weeks tomorrow.

MotherofPearl · 23/01/2016 18:54

Sorry, forgot to answer your question about mat leave. Last day of work will be 8 April, which is about 12 weeks away I think. Just about do-able.

LucindaE · 23/01/2016 19:15

MotherofPearl I feel for you. Pasta in any shape or form is very unpleasant on the way up again. Take heart; after some years, I was able to face a pasta bake again, though when suffering, I managed to cover a wardrobe with a reappearing one as I dashed by it...

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 23/01/2016 21:05

Glad things have turned out well now two, lovely to hear from you. Sounds like youve had a traumatic time :(
Mop, pasta vom is minging I hope youve a better day tomorrow.
Ruby sounds like we have the same HCPs! You always have such good humour but must be fustrating.
Thinking of you all, sorry for no more personal replies feeling yuck and I worry about missing people out. Always thinking of you all.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 23/01/2016 21:07

Ooh quick question before I forget - any tips for glucose tolerance test? Mine is a week monday, cant barely keep fluids down as it is :/

eallison88 · 23/01/2016 21:09

Eugh pasta. Bring back the tinned peaches! Is so difficult, wanting to try new foods but worrying if they'll reappear and what it will be like. I remember rice pudding being utterly awful on the way back up and swearing if never eat it again. But I had some last week and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ladies, tick off another day! Wishing all a restful night

spandau1980 · 23/01/2016 21:29

Hi all...
two I m so relieved to hear from you !!!!
Glad you are both home and beginning to mend.
Babies are tough cookies .

Reebok commiserations on the constipation.. mine is dreadful.and I'm not taking anything to cause it... its so bad now I dread feeling like I need to go :(

got sickness feeling stach ache and acid from he'll today but my son isn't well either thinking a bug..
Great :(

Was worried about baby as not moved much but going crazy now I'm lying still... having a front facing placenta makes it harder to feel too apparently. ..

Hugs to all on the HG misery train.. the track that never seems to end ... and all the crap stations we stop off on along the way ...

RubyReins · 23/01/2016 22:30

Congrats two! Fabulous news about your new wee boy and the sickness vanishing. Sorry to hear you were put through the ringer and really hope you are in a good place.

icant ah the GTT... Well, I duly drank my allotted 410 ml of original Lucozade (that I had to purchase myself) and somewhat dramatically vommed it all back up. A sonographer came out of her room to see if I was ok and she became collateral damage. They had to get some poor sod out with a mop and a wet floor sign Blush. I did try and warn them. Best advice I can give on that score is to advise them that you will not be able to take the test due to HG and that you should probably just be referred to be on the safe side. Your pre GTT fasting blood levels (should be below 5.5) may give rise to a diagnosis of GD in any event. Checking your blood and being monitored may be enough. I am just in a bad mood about it all as I have been tentatively diagnosed despite not having any blood sugar levels of concern. The docs have said that. I really hope you get through it ok. Oh and wear black. Lucozade is a devil to wash out...

eallison raspberry leaf tea... Tastes a bit like hate.

And yep... been there on the whole simultaneous vomming and peeing. I recommend a covertly stashed ice cream tub in the loo to barf into so you can do both. I have resorted to spewing in the bog adjacent bath which was very messy. And I definitely avoid pasta. Sweet Lord that was ugly...

It's just such a magical time...

SomebodySedateMe · 24/01/2016 00:05

Thanks for all the advice. Am currently wide awake after another late night throwing up session. Joy.

I had a couple of issues at my GTT too and I'd second telling them it's going to be a problem. They can still take bloods and look at your fasting level - I was diagnosed that way.

Food is a shitty thing for me because of the gdm. No sugar or carbs! Focusing on staying hydrated and ready to beg for an induction right now.

squeezed · 24/01/2016 00:24

two congratulations and so pleased the sickness has gone.
special sorry that you are feeling rotten. Hope that you are managing fluids. I also can't sleep as Spd is now disturbing my rest.

TwoDrifters · 24/01/2016 10:13

Thank you everyone! It's honestly so amazing having the sickness be gone. Eating and drinking without the constant worry of how something will feel "on the way back up", that horrid constant bad taste in your mouth being gone, it's such a pleasure. You will all get there, and when you do, whilst I can't for certain say it was worth every single vomit session (!) it comes remarkably close! Smile

LucindaE · 24/01/2016 10:52

Somebody Oh no, I'm sorry, just seen that you can't eat or drink sweet things, so my advice was more or less no use at all, save maybe the melon; I've heard that is good, put n a blender and frozen into cubes, or eaten as slices? That sounds like a horrible night.
RubyReins Are they advising you against drinking sweet things, too? That ice cream tub sounds a good idea. The grotesque contingency plans one has to use with The Scourge; - the plastic bags carefully packed in case of possible Public Puking sessions, the spare pairs of knickers. 'Six Tricks For the Crafty Hyperemesis Sufferer'. I hope the reputedly hidebound lawl framework allowed you some time off for sick leave, remind me? It sounded as if you had to fulfill a draining schedule, anyway...
WaitingForARainbow How are things today?
TwoDrifters That is very happy news, and so encouraging for everyone to hear.
Ican't Do they hold out any hope of a near discharge?
Reebok spandau and others, it must so discouraging when you don't get any relief as the stages go by...I hope Madrigal gets some relief soon, too...
GoldGlitter How are you? Sock and others?

OP posts:
RubyReins · 24/01/2016 11:58

Lucinda They are not really advising anything! I do not have a sweet tooth at all and when not knocked up stick to water and pints of espresso/gin. I did eat some fruit yoghurt and I have been eating rather more fruit than I might normally due to the other joyous bathroom issues that pregnancy brings but my morning sugar levels are all below 4.8 and have been for a full month now regardless. Tested with a plate of rhubarb crumble and custard and still in the 4s. That, to be fair, wasn't terrible on the way back up... Pasta remains the most unpleasant with fajitas a close second.

Last time I had GD I had to avoid all carbs and even carrots sent my sugars sky high. I was however wearing a corset on a night out 5 weeks post birth so it's not all bad!

Officially off work now - the out of office notification is on so it is official! Past few months have been brutal at work so it's been nice to gorge on box sets with DH (also self employed). Get the decision in that appalling 36 day case I was running last year on Tuesday; my attendance has been excused by the very lovely judge Smile which I assume means that he has found against my client...!

Hope everyone is holding up today and that icant is out of hospital. I have fond memories of visiting relatives in hospital and loving the smell of carbolic soap and strong disinfectant. My hospital smells of leftover boxing day sprouts and piss...

squeezed · 24/01/2016 12:40

ruby Good news that you don't need to be at work now. Hope the sugar levels get sorted. You made me laugh with your description of the hospital smell.
Has anyone had uncontrollable retching with occasional foam coming up? It was constant for nearly 2 minutes and worried me a bit.
Hope everyone is having a manageable day.
