possible pregnancy with copper coil

Had my copper coil put in after my DD was born in 2013 however I'm now 6 days late for my period and have been feeling nauseous and got sore books and felt very emotional yesterday. Did have 2 days of period type pains but nothing came of it. Has anyone else got pregnant with the copper coil? I know contraception isn't 100% but I had it put in because we didn't want another baby. Not sure I want or could afford another baby at the moment

I know of at least two people who have got pregnant with a copper coil. You need to get checked out, as there is a higher risk of the pregnancy being ectopic.

My sister's baby was premature and came pretty much clutching the coil (he was fine, small, but fine).

Well Iv done a test an I am definitely pregnant will have to wait until Tuesday to make an appointment at the doctors as tomorrow is a bank holiday

I'm currently 24w pregnant with copper cool still in situ (and still BF...).
Their primary concern with me was to scan asap to locate the coil and check the pregnancy location. Since then everything has proceeded fairly normally.

Absolutely terrified if I'm honest as ideally didn't want another child until DD was 5 (currently 2) still very much in shock

Yes it does happen as Iv done 2 tests and both positive I have to ring the doctors on Tuesday to see what happens next as they are closed tomorrow as it's bank holiday only found out boxing day

I have it too and always thought it was next to impossible to get pregnant. Eek!

Me too but here i am in a bit of a predicament no a couple of days won't make a difference but need to get checked to see if it's eptopic. Have had a bit of pain in my left side but don't know if that was implantation pain?

I totally sympathise. Obviously if you get the copper coil, it means you want the door shut for a good few years!

I think that ectopic pregnancy is meant to be very painful, so a twinge is hopefully not a bad sign. I've got my fingers crossed for you though.

Thank you. Yes we didnt want anymore for a good couple of years as we need a bigger house, i need to go back to work full time to be able to have 9mths off financially. Will update on Tuesday once Iv been to the doctors

this has just happened to me. Had copper coil, all was fine, had random spotting last few days, last period was only 2 weeks ago and oddly very light. did test, am pregnant, am shocked and unsure what to do. Have no children, didn't want children for a while, hence coil. Docs on tuesday. Never heard of it happening to anyone with coil before... Until now. I know nothing is 100% but never expected this to happen at all

I hadn't heard of it happening before either [GrassWasGreener]. I was reading statistics and it reckons 1 in 100 so I guess we're the unlucky ones let me know how you get on at the Dr's I was hoping mine would be open tomorrow but I don't think they are

thank you, yes will do. My docs defiantly not open tomorrow. 9am Tuesday, I will be there at 8.55.

I was thrilled when I got my coil. No more drugs to prevent pregnancy, not more remembering to take anything, or use condoms. Having it fitted was't even that bad. Thought I was sorted for years and that it was pretty reliable.

Obviously someone has to be that statistic

I found out on boxing day too. Was the only thing I could check for at home as was worried the spotting could be a sign of disease, so took a test to try and rule that out. Although pleased am not sick, am totally over whelmed that this has happened.

[Jenjen85] how pregnant do you think you might be?

I had a coil in before I had my little girl for around 2 Years and had no problems at all.

I think I might be around 5weeks pregnant according to the pregnancy calculator. How far do you think you are? I have been feeling nauseous but I was really poorly when I was pregnant with my little girl was off work for around 10wks and was nearly hospitalised twice due to sickness, just hoping get I'm not sick anytime soon.

I'm not sure how I feel at the minute as I'm still in shock. Me and my husband haven't really spoken about it much but I could swear I felt a little weird flutter in my tummy before

I have no idea how pregnant I may be, last period was light but was definitely a period so could be anywhere between 3-7 weeks.

Would also have the added complication of my blood type, I am A-, its a funny one when it comes to pregnancy apparently, and of course there is the eptopic risk factor here. Too many questions at the moment. How far along I am also plays a big deciding factor on whether I have the choice of keeping... or not.

I feel totally normal physically, had an ache on left hip for a bit but its gone now. Read something here earlier about this being the implanting ache.. not amused.

Am focusing on the docs appointment and that I can not make and choices or assumptions until I have seem her.

My BF knows, because I mentioned the random blood. He is relieved everything with us works correctly, but also shocked and unsure as he was in agreement when I had the coil fitted. We have talked about it a lot, but all hypothetically and ifs and buts and maybes. He agrees we can only wait until tuesday.

I'm wishing Tuesday was tomorrow for both of us. I had quite bad pain in my left side for 2 days so took ibuprofen might have been implantation but I just thought it was period pain obviously not!!!

You have options. Abortion limit is 2 4wks I think but keep your options open and chat to your Dr and BF

yes we will have to update.

We have decided we will be fine whatever we decide. Its the few daunting thoughts like, if we are able to keep, if its not eptopic, this time next year I will have a small person to look after. I will have to be pregnant and will have to give birth. I will have to tell my dad! We will have to tell my BF pretty catholic parents and we are not even engaged never mind married. Most importantly we have said we will make our decision based on us not others opinions as it is us that will have to live with them either way.

Of all the things i envisioned doing in my life, looking a positive test was not one I have ever pictured. We still have some time. So for now, roll on tuesday for both of us so that we can both find out any next steps we wish to take

DS was conceived exactly 13 years ago whilst my copper coil was fully in place! Went to the doctors for a new patient check in the February and was told I was pregnant. Had no idea! We were living with DH's parents at the time and sleeping on a fold-out bed in DH's bedroom, I was out of work and circumstances weren't ideal, but they often aren't.

How do you feel about being pregnant?

2 of my friends were conceived with the copper coil. Both were born having grown around the coil. One has an amazing scar on her thigh, looks like a Catherine wheel, from where the coil was stuck in her when she was born. Both are totally fine though.

I was conceived on the copper coil too. Mum had major abdominal surgery weeks earlier too (have no idea how she managed to DTD). Her coil had dislodged a bit - they just kept a close eye on her and things went to term.

Unfortunately no contraception is fool proof - mirena better than copper only but things can dislodge etc. I just hope you can get seen and questions answered etc - good luck!!!

I know nothing is 100% but never expected to become pregnant. I can't have the more mirena coil as I just constantly bleed with it hence having the copper one

If the foetus is implanted in the right place, i.e. not an ectopic pregnancy, then it's perfectly possible to have a healthy baby with the coil in situ for the duration of the pregnancy, and it's also possible for the coil to be removed, as happened with me at 8 weeks. There was some spotting but that didn't last long and DS was born healthy at 40 weeks.

When you see your GP you'll most likely be referred for a scan to confirm viability and check where your coil is, and you can go from there as to how you feel about continuing the pregnancy. Have you spoken to your DP about it? I'm guessing it will be a massive shock for him too.

I told my husband straight away and he said well we will deal with it, it's not ideal but we'll have to cope. Is it selfish that I don't want to just cope I want to have money so we can do things with my DD and move house whereas if we keep the baby we won't be able to do those things

It's not selfish, it's practical and I know what you mean. Babies are a huge strain - financially, physically, emotionally - and thought your DH is saying the right things in supporting you it doesn't take away the practical things that you want to do that would be harder if you had another baby right now.

However, would the things you want to do, such as moving house, just be made harder by having another baby now or would they be made completely unattainable?

I don't think that's selfish. We have to consider that too. I am just about to sign contracts on a new house in couple weeks once Xmas is over. I have a loan to pay back and my work contract isn't permanent until March.. Unsure if they will keep me if pregnant. You have to be realistic about all the circumstances. Bf has an enormous amount of work to do this year to upgrade his farm and home house and his mum is poorly and needs treatment from January for 6 months so he really didn't need a pregnant gf aswell.

We will have to discuss everything Tuesday. Also we are not getting any younger! So do we bite the bullet and carry on or not. It's a tough one alright.

On the plus note jenjen85 Tuesday is only 1 more day away
