I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

poppie I feel your pain. Please feel too alone in this, everyone here knows just how hard this is for you. I know it's not quite the same as real people, but do moan/rant/talk here. You'll receive nothing but understanding here. I'm sure it doesn't feel like it, but you are doing so, so well. Every day you crawl your way thru is another day closer to meeting your wonderful baby. Unfortunately, unless you've been thru HG or some husbands/partners really get it, it's just not possible to understand how physically and mentally debilitating it is. You could try saying something like "yes, it will be fantastic to meet my baby. However, right now I've never felt more ill on my life, so you saying things like that aren't helpful". I think some people think they are being helpful by reminding you that you're going to have a lovely baby, unfortunately what you need is quiet understanding that you're finding this the hardest thing youve ever done. But already you are an amazing mother. This day is nearly done; one day closer.

EnglishGarden15 · 06/01/2016 22:00

Thanks so much for the replies and support :-) I'll stick with it and see how I go. It's difficult to know what's normal in pregnancy ie the tiredness and what's not! My doctors are really supportive so I know they'll give me time to make sure I'm definitely OK before I go back to work. Do most people find that they need to take medication throughout the pregnancy? I really hope it's not going to hurt my little one. It makes it hard to get excited when it's still really early on and you feel miserable with this. I hope everyone has a good nights sleep.

eallison88 · 06/01/2016 22:00

Please don't! Please don't feel too alone in this. Of all the words for my phone yo miss!!!

eallison88 · 06/01/2016 22:02

English I took meds from week 6 -41 (and in labour!), but much lower dosage and frequency towards the end. Try not to worry about effect on baby; dehydrated and starved mummy is far, far worse for baby.

EnglishGarden15 · 06/01/2016 22:02

And big hugs Poppie.

EnglishGarden15 · 06/01/2016 22:14

Thanks eallision. That's a good point and it's so nice speaking to others who are going through the same or have been through it. Though I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

BarmeeMarmee · 06/01/2016 22:55

Welcome EnglishGarden. Sorry you're feeling so low Poppy - I'm sure we can all sympathise! Hope everyone else is "ok".

I'm surviving thanks Reebok. 31 weeks tomorrow and on Monday will be 4 weeks till I finish work. Not that I'm counting. Equally not sure I'm going to make it that far. SPD is horrendous and a 2 hour commute each way is killing me. I hate the tube!!!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 07/01/2016 00:24

welcome English garden :)
Barmee - sounds rough :(
mardigral - hope you feel a bit Better after the fluids and iv anti sickness?

just got back from OOH had a bad throat that got really bad, sore ear/neck, unable to swallow etc and been told I've strep throat? they mentioned admitting me but the ENT facility is in hospital far away like the maternity ward! I said no, so had an injection of penicillin and they've given me injecrion of painkillers to see me overnight and syrup to try tomorrow but if no joy see GP for admitting for iv antibiotics. ketones sticking at 2+ so not getting worse but shall see how I go with this penicillin syrup :/.
night all x

eallison88 · 07/01/2016 04:40

icant you poor thing. You're body must be so run down that you're catching anything and everything. Fingers crossed you're able to keep the syrup down and it makes a noticeable difference.

PoppieD · 07/01/2016 07:39

Thanks all- it really is something you can't empathise with I think unless you've been there. I'll try and remember to use your helpful words ellison. EnglishGarden I've been on meds since week 7 now at 15.6 I was really scared too about them, but they are keeping me out of hospital. I'm still being sick about 20+ times a day a times but I'm at least keeping Ice chips and ice lollies down so ketones are just hovering at an acceptable level. Thinking of you all x

squeezed · 07/01/2016 08:43

Had an awful day yesterday stuck in traffic for 7 hours. Vomiting on the motorway and work was hard work. Really wish I could rest today and just feel like crying. Hard day at work today where I need to be ontop of my game but took medication late and feeling rough.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 07/01/2016 09:17

LucindaE · 07/01/2016 10:46

Oh dear, suffering all round. Horrendous commutes and sickness, and other ills.
Poppie Is that the number of heaves, rather than separate vomiting sessions? Either way, if you're on meds, it seems too much to me. I'm glad the meds plus ice lollies etc are keeping you out of ketonitis (or whatever they call it) but this is still awful for you. Have they tried all the meds? If not, they ought to offer you new ones/a combination. Sympathies about OH not understanding; a few are angelic, but most can't really understand how exhausted you feel. I won't make sour comments about how serious their one-day self-inflicted hangovers/stomach viruses are seen as being!
*NeedAsockamnesty Eleven times is too much. I think you need stronger meds, too.
squeezed SEVEN HOURS in traffic?!!!!!! That sounds appalling, my goodness. Is it flooded where you are?
BarmeeMarmee I had no idea you did a FOUR HOUR commute every day, and am in awe. You must be exchausted.
ICan't Oh dear, what can I say? This has been so awful. I continue to hope for better days for you. Much sympathy.
Madrigal I am so happy that as of last night you feel a little better.
Great advice from Meerka (our resident drugs expert) and from eallison.
Apologies if I've rudely ignored anyone. Back soon.

poppie yes, that cheerful 'helpfulness' becomes irritating very quickly. eallison's advice can't be bettered.

(Alternatively another answer is to 'accidently' aim the next upchuck on their shoes! )

english about the meds. All the meds presecribed in preg are considered safe for the baby (cyclizine most of all). Metoclopramide can occasionally have serious side effects for the mother, but even that is safe for the baby.

There are few formal studies done on preg women but long term and sometimes massive studies (a Danish one in particular) have, in summary, found no increased risk to the baby.

There can be risks from dehydration and physical weakness though. Dehydration / long term starvation weakens your system.

some people take meds throughout. They have to. I've got the feeling that they are something of a minority though.

barmee ive been wondering how you are. I found the 30 weeks turning point so reassuring because the chances for the baby are so very much better then, if they decide to evacuate the premises early.

squeezed yesterday sounds horrendous :( I do hope you managed to rest ok and that today is a bit better. thinking of you.

icant you're going to deserve a diamond medal once all this is all over.

Have they ever talked of putting you on steroids? A few people have had to use them and you are having such an extreme time of it that it does sound something to consider ?

Goodness, everyone, I didn't realise we were so short of space!

poppie that you're still being so sick suggests you need to try different meds; remind me what you're on? sock I agree with lucinda, perhaps you need to move up the medicine ladder too.

Also poppie if a nice calm response doesn't work,I'm all for onceameers advice of spewing on feet.

PoppieD · 08/01/2016 07:33

I'm going to practice my aim I think! I've been on cyclazine, stematil and now going for buccol(sp?) as apparently this dissolves in mouth rather than having to wait for it to do stomach-bloodstream route. DH is great don't worry- particularly as I am between 'why are you hovering listening to me be sick GO AWAY!' Then where are you going?! Come back and hold my hair'! 😳
