Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thank you very much.

It seams so crazy reading through these threads just how many of you like me end up here several times.

I have a good feeling this time that I will avoid what happened last attempt and I get beyond 34 weeks.

mis I'm so sorry your having a relapse are they going to start you on steroids at all?

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 05/01/2016 18:34

congratulations sock, fingers Crossed you get meds that help.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 05/01/2016 18:47

sock wishing you the very best and glad they are going to be managing you with a good plan right from the start.

Pity icant can't move to where you are :/ yet again, that's a shocking story icant. I think that when you are well again, you have a very good case for some serious neglect and mishandling from your hospital.

madrigal sorry to hear you're having another bad week. It -can- take up to 21-22 weeks to show a steady improvment but the fact you've had some good days is a positive sign, it really is.

Reebok I do hope you have survived. If I could, I'd wave a wand to get you extra maternity leave .... i really think you should be off sick. Courage.

spandau how are you now?

How did telling yoru supervisor go, special?

MoP good to hear you're working from home at least.

Good images Mother Hen. love the one with the baby punching the bladder =)

immortalwife · 05/01/2016 19:44

Hi guys!
Congrats sock by the way. Good luck.
Well I've had a good non sicky day which is sooo nice, but I have sad news as my DD(2) is starting nursery tomorrow! Sad I will weep into my drink later I'm sure. It's good I suppose as I am really struggling to care for her on my own.

Hope everyone else is ok.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 05/01/2016 19:50

Immortal I'm glad to hear of a non sicky day I hope it lasts! we all know how unpredictable HG is :(.
I know its hard sending DD to nursery but sure she will love it and you'll need the respite.

spandau1980 · 05/01/2016 21:10

Thumping headaches all the time. . . .
Can't sleep due to reflux uncomfortable dd ect ect 22 + 5 now
No sign of blooming again this preg

Anyone else with headaches
Mine thump with heart beat.. checked blood pressure it was 120/67 which was fine they said but iv always had very low blood pressure in pregnancy..
Guess not with this little tinker...

Hi to all.
Sorry not very chatty head kills all the time n I'm so so tired all the time x

eallison88 · 05/01/2016 22:35

spandau I imagine the headaches will be connected to the dehydration. Are you able to try and up the intake of liquid? Or perhaps try those sachets of stuff for when you've got the runs (or a hangover) dialryte (definitely not spelt like that!).they taste pretty unpleasant but are good at rehydrating you. I sometimes managed a few sips. I hope things ease a little for you to get some sleep, being tired can't be helping matters. Remember though, you're over half way.

Wishing everyone a restful night

elizabethsmum · 05/01/2016 22:52

Hi all
So lovely to see lots of you on here who have recently been through HG horrors advising others, I am trying to remain a more regular presence on the thread again. Have found it much more tricky to keep up since the app went down- can't follow the desk top site nearly so easily on my phone and that is with my glasses lucinda!!

To update on my dSil having chemo- it is all going well, been hard going but mainly positive news and she is due to have mastectomy shortly.

Sad news today from dh's lovely work colleague who was finally pg after several rounds of IVF and had been suffering badly with nausea and sickness, unfortunately the scan today showed no heartbeat at 10 weeks so dh and I are devastated for her. It is something I deal with a lot sadly in my job but so heart breaking when so close to home.

So sorry to be negative today but will be back in a more positive and helpful frame of mind tomorrow.

amysmummy12345 · 05/01/2016 23:13

Hi all! Been lurking but every time I get five minutes to write something pops up and distracts me!
17+5 today and having lots of good days, then every four or five days I get a curve ball with bile runs etc but definite improvement!!

Reebok I hope you're on reduced duties still? I'm hoping to get day to day supply now seeing as my last place ended at Xmas, this is the start of my qualifying weeks for smp so need the steady income!!

Spandau sorry to hear your suffering with the headaches, they bring me nausea at the best of times Confused

icant I'm not sure how much more drama you can take you poor thing!! Really praying that things improve for you, how's your dc?

Lucinda hope your mum I'd ok?

Waves to everyone else (my brains like a sieve and my phone doesn't scroll lol) xxxxx

Reebok · 06/01/2016 07:42

Thanks guys. It was inset day yesterday so had to try and keep myself awake during boring training. Kids back today but as I'm only a cover teacher hoping it will be ok. My hours are increasing now so that I go back to full time again amys. Hoping to survive today. There's a damn staff meeting after school.
Good luck with the supply amys.

Icant that story sounds awful. You poor thing!

Elizabethsmum sorry for your friends loss...very sad news. I've a history of mc myself so I know how awful it is especially when you are being sick!

Spandau I can completely relate to no sleep. DD wanted to lay on me last night which is hard with a bump and I could barely sleep as every time I let go to turn over she cried. I think she's recognizing the changes i'm going through and feeling slightly anxious as she's been playing up a lot at night.

How's everyone else getting on? Mop, shoop, barmee, madrigal and everyone else? Sorry my mind has gone blank!

Welcome to all the newbies and sorry you have to be here.

Has anyone else been getting a lot of kicks to their bladder and groin? It feels constant and makes it really difficult to not need the loo all the time/to walk/heck to sit! Baby thinks I'm a punch bag! Doesn't help with the long commute. I'm so tired already! Roll on Friday! 5 working weeks left for me until half term...luckily I have two hospital appointments so I lose a few days!

MadrigalElectromotive · 06/01/2016 07:50

I think I'm going to ring the ward in a little while to see if I can be admitted today. Have been up most of the night bringing up bile or retching and this morning my ketones are 3+. This is just like how it's been when I've had to go in previously.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 06/01/2016 08:49

reebok - hope these next few weeks go fast. Totally understand with DD my DS Is the same and a right terror at nights. Also many loo trips down to low down kicks.
madrigal - hope you get to the ward soon and they get plenty of fluids and antisickness into you :(

LucindaE · 06/01/2016 10:33

NeedAsockamnesty Welcome. I hope all goes well this time. That must have been a traumatic decision for you, last time. From your comment, I wonder if you were on this thread before under a different name and we knew each other before? Don't feel you have to say, if you don't want, of course!
Madrigal Poor you. This is such a disappointment after a break from suffering badly. I hope you soon start feeling a bit better with fluids. What meds are you on, remind me? Can they add some?
Ican't That sounds dreadful. Such inefficiency! Words fail me. What a dreadful sage of suffering and medical incompetence you have gone through.
Reebok Oh dear, full duties. I do hope OH helps you to rest at home a bit.
spandau I had awful hormonal migraines up to sixteen weeks, but as others say, they are so hard to tell from dehydration headaches, anyway. Are lollies or ice cubes, soda water or flat coke or anything liquid no use?
I hope you can avoid being admitted but you might need it, like Madrigal . How are the ketones testing?
SpecialStains I hope the journey went not to horribly?
amysmummy Sorry to her bile runs are still a regular event. Those are foul.
elizabethsmum That is so sad about your OH's work colleague. Fingers crossed for your SIL. Lol about glasses. I have to take my reading glasses about with me these days, or I end up trying to read things at arms' length...
TwoDrifters Like others, I so hope things start for you.
immortalwife You will miss DD, but you do need the rest. Glad about good day.
Great advice from eallison and OnceaMeer and others.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Yes lucindawe did chat back then, ive been around in various guises (easy enough to work out if you realise all names have the same word in). I also lurked and chatted on here 4 years ago with second youngest and 2 years ago with current youngest.

She was induced at 34 because of HG

LucindaE · 06/01/2016 17:42

NeedsAsockamnesty I think I remember - I'm no code breaker, as you can see, or I'd have worked that out. It's brave of you to go for a third. I'm so glad they're taking things very seriously.

OP posts:
NeedsAsockamnesty · 06/01/2016 18:07

If only it was only 3! It's the 4th pregnancy in 4.5 years I have older kids as well. And the waves of nausea with the occasional bit of puke coming out of your nose bit right now but still able to keep meds down,I'm pretty certain bonkers as opposed to brave Grin

But I can't rave enough about my GP the entire practice is fab

MotherofPearl · 06/01/2016 18:14

Argh, been sick every afternoon for the last 3 days in a row. This hasn't happened to me for ages. Over the last few weeks I've reduced my Ondanestron to one a day, and now I'm wondering whether that was wise.
Madrigal, hope you're OK? Awful to have such a bad relapse at 19+ weeks. Hospital is rubbish but IV meds and rehydration are heaven when you're really feeling bad.
Icant, I'm horrified by your most recent hospital drama. It's shocking that no HCP has bothered to put together a proper care plan for you, and crucially, to ensure that it's implemented. The HCPs you've encountered don't seem to communicate with each other at all! There's no taking of responsibility, no continuity! You're so stoical through it all.
Reebok, hope school isn't too taxing for you. It's so hard to concentrate when you're feeling sick and tired, I find.
Spandau, sorry about the headaches. As if things aren't bad enough eh?
Amys, bile runs are the pits! Sympathies.
ElizMum, that's so sad about your friend. I've never had a miscarriage but I can imagine how devastating it must be.
I've a nasty feeling I've forgotten people; apologies if so.

EnglishGarden15 · 06/01/2016 18:55

Hi everyone. I'm new to mumsnet and posting on threads. I'm 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant and really struggling with this horrid condition. I thankfully have an amazing doctors so I was prescribed Prochlorperazine on Monday and rehydration medicine so thankfully didn't end up in hospital. Is anyone else using this medication? I've been signed off work for a week but worried about going back as it's making me really drowsy and it takes at least an hour to take (dissolving on my gum under top lip). Are there anymore easier to use medications that don't have drowsiness as a side effect? Really sympathise with everyone with this, didn't think it was possible to be sick so much in one day!
X

LucindaE · 06/01/2016 19:05

EnglishGarden15 What a lovely name. Welcome. There are several people on this thread on that, I believe. You'll find lots of support on here. Was the redhydration meds diruylite ( I can't spell it either, eallision)? Do you find the juice of tinned fruit (and maybe the fruit itself) cheap ice cream, jelly, sips of flat coke, ice lollies or ice cubes, soda water, nibbles of crisps, or the juice of crushed melon at all bearable?
MotherofPearl You poor thing. That is not good.
INeedAsockamnesty Goodness, you are a veteran! I hope all goes much better this time.

OP posts:
MotherofPearl · 06/01/2016 19:19

EnglishGarden, welcome. I've not had experience of that particular medication, but there are lots of options available so do ask to try something different if you're struggling. Cyclizine, which is widely used, can also cause drowsiness. Although it's difficult to tell tiredness from pregnancy (which especially in the first trimester is extreme) apart from tiredness because of meds. Do stick around here; it helps to chat to others in the same boat.

LilacRain · 06/01/2016 20:37

Elizabethsmum so sorry to hear about your friend's miscarriage Sad Must be devastating especially after all they went through to get pregnant. Life is so cruel sometimes!
Hope your dSil's mastectomy goes smoothly, good to hear the treatment's going well, though it must be very hard for the whole family.

English I was on prochloperazine for a while in first trimester. It helped a bit but not enough so I moved into stronger meds though I believe it's effective for some. I rather liked the drowsy effect as I could sleep the days away when in worst stages.
Don't return to work too soon. I tried to go back at 16weeks, relapsed and was off sick the rest of the pregnancy.
Rest is so important with HG!

LucindaE · 06/01/2016 20:51

Hello, LilacRain. I hope you saw my post below about how you mustn't feel bad about talking about Hyperemesis coming back after birth for you (and me) as part of the unlucky very few. As I said there, I think we should warn people that there is a tiny chance it might happen, and if it does it won't last forever.

OP posts:
MadrigalElectromotive · 06/01/2016 21:05

I'm home after being in hospital for a day admission. Been rehydrated and had iv ondansetron. Feeling a bit better but worn out and very bruised from the numerous attempts to cannulate me! Will read through properly tomorrow and do personals. X

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 06/01/2016 21:38

In haste ]

english often people start out on cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine) and then try the other meds. Ondansetron is the most effective, hardest to get and most expensive.

cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine; can make you sleepy)
Metoclopramide (empties the stomach faster, less to upchuck)
Domperidone (similar)
Prochlorperazine (stemetil/Avomine/Buccastem) (works on your sense of balance; also a travel remedy; can be good for some people).
Promethazine (called Phenergan)(stronger old fashioned anti-histamine, also sleepy-making)
Ondansetron (the strongest and many people find the best, but causes constipation).

You -might- find that you adjust to the prochlorperazine, give it 3 days. Cyclizine and promethazine can also make you sleepy, but again sometimes that passes.

best of luck, do keep posting for moral support, we've all been through it and there's no such thing as too much info :)

MoP would you consider upping the ondansetron again? just to see what happens?

sockamnesty you've done this how many tiems? Really wishing you the best this time.

wishing everyone a quiet night

PoppieD · 06/01/2016 21:53

Ok- another day spent mainly sobbing clutching the toilet bowl as I vomit the nothing in my stomach up- any tips for the next smug arse that tells me to 'cheer up- it's all going to be fantastic' and no-one other than DH is taking me seriously when I say I don't think I could go through another pregnancy after this one. As the song says 'I'm sick of being sick, I'm tired of being tired' 😖😖😖
