Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

eallison88 That's a thought! I'll bear that in mind thank you Flowers

Just popping back to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
Having spent most of 2015 with my head down the loo, 2016 is looking a lot brighter! My DS is 14weeks now and the centre of my world. He was worth every hardship of HG! This thread was invaluable while I was suffering.

Ealli belated congrats on your baby boy, I remember you were due just after me. How are you getting on?

I had a rough time after the birth. Just wanted to say, ladies, do take it easy after an HG pregnancy! I tried to do too much too soon, ended up with repeated infections, anaemia, PND and a back injury. Felt very weak and tired for the first 3months, (probably depleted by 9months of vomiting). I also struggled to eat and had nausea on and off for a month or so (more due to exhaustion/sleep deprivation than HG but it was horrible as brought back memories). Also found I had to re-introduce foods slowly... my diet was so restricted when I was pregnant, after the birth I couldn't eat normal food for a while without feeling sick. Luckily I'm back to normal now! My SPD has finally cleared up too, it took a while for pelvis to get back to normal.

Good luck ladies and don't give up, you'll be holding your lovely babies before you know it!

LucindaE · 01/01/2016 15:00

Hello, everyone. Back at last from Buckinghamshire and cooking for mother who was struck down with worse health problems than usual. I'm glad the thread didn't run out, and I'm sure that what with OnceaMeer and eallison and Mother of Pearl and elizabethsmum and everyone, you have been getting great advice. I'll catch up asap. I hope everyone has a much better 2016 than they did 2015 (or anyway, the latter part of 2015).

I can eat chocolate and I'm really pleased. Not as much as the final christmas guests leaving tomorrow! Feeling really miserable, I've been sick and got a nose bleed. Also my 20 week scan couldn't be completed because of the baby being bloody awkward, so I've got to go back again and I'm worrying something is wrong. Stress, stress, stress. Oh to have one of those easy pregnancies.

MadrigalElectromotive · 01/01/2016 21:28

Reflux seems to be starting for me. Sad just feel permanently acidic and constant indigestion to add to the nausea. Feel so fed up - thought that once the worst of the hg was behind me I might be able to enjoy the pregnancy but I'm starting to think that how I am now is as good as it'll get for me.

Looking at a phased return to work and might try to go back part time until I can start maternity leave. Going to speak to my boss about it asap.

Also starting to get a bit worried because I haven't felt the baby move yet. I'm 18+4 and thought I would have felt something by now so I'm worrying about whether she is ok.

Sorry for me me me post. Hope everyone else is coping.

LucindaE · 01/01/2016 21:37

Welcome to Poppy. You've had brilliant advice from Ican't. It's very brave of you to consider ttc again.
Ican't Sorry to hear you've been re-admitted and have had more trouble.
Reebok Sorry also to hear of heartburn and exhaustion looking after DD. Toddlers have so much energy!
spandau Sorry too to hear of constipation and heartburn. As others say, a lot find those suppositories good.
Madrigal I wrote a message for you and can't read my dreadful handwriting. I have a horrible feeling it has happened before with you.
eallison Great advice as ever.
LilacRain Lovely to hear from you, and so happy and recovered. Thank you so much for coming on to encourage people. Congratulations on LO.
TwoDrifters I do hope whatever route you choose works out well for you.
Best of luck.
elizabethsmum Welcome back. Your OH having a work colleague suffering is an interesting synchronicity. Lol about ginger and OH. I wonder he dared say that! I've been away for a few days myself.
amysmummy My goodness, I am sorry to hear of more worry for you.
squeezed Good advice as ever and MotherofPearl too and I can believe sparkling elderflower water is soothing and glad elizabethsmum thought of that. It is great just for ordinary stomach bugs. Much sympathy over disgusting crisps and satsuma vomit.
I'm also sorry to hear that there have been a couple of relapses. I hope that is due to overdoing it, ie, daring to socialise for an hour or two a week. It is not fair!
Thanks for enquiries about my mother. She is in poor health and housebound, but it's chronic.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

squeezed and Madrigal cross posted. squeezed sorry about scan disappointment; try not to worry. Madrigal I believe it is fairly normal for some people not to feel movements until as late as you or later. I wonder if you might talk to your midwife for some reassurance? I do feel for everyone with heartburn. It does so ruin things when you've got over the worst of Hyperemesis.

OP posts:
iamdivergent · 02/01/2016 10:20

Relapse! Was just sick all over the kitchen sink - not my finest moment. DH was not pleased Hmm not like I could help it.

eallison88 · 02/01/2016 10:39

lilac thank you! Sorry you were one of the unlucky ones to have a rough ride after giving birth. Others, don't panic though, most of us revert to normal pretty quickly if not immediately.

squeezed yay chocolate! That was one if the things I really missed. Towards the end I could easy veru dark chocolate cos it was dairy free. You'll find chocolate one of your best friends if you breast feed! Try not to worry about the scan, instead look at the silver lining: extra chance to see your baby!! I understand the worry tho.

madrigal speak to your gp about reflux. In the meantime sainsburys own brand heartburn tablets helped me. Phased return sounds good, let us know how you get on.

iam calmly ask him if he'd prefer you to vomit on him next time.

spandau1980 · 02/01/2016 11:10

If placenta is at front
If you have a lot of fluid or your on bigger side you may not yet.

Everyone is sur prised I can feel baby I'm 22 weeks so don't worry

eallison88 · 02/01/2016 12:23

Oh and baby movement; had my flutter at 17 and half weeks, could've been wind...kicks/movements for definite at 19 weeks or so. Try not to worry too much!

LucindaE · 02/01/2016 18:02

Iam Poor you. I don't see why DH should be displeased - at least you made the sink; the floor would be messier! His shoes might have got it, too...
eallison and spandau Excellent advice about baby movements. I didn't know that about placenta position making a difference.
LilacRain I meant to add that I suffered after the birth, too, and so did a few on this thread. It's very unusual, but that's no comfort when you are the one it has happened to. Every now and then I mention that it does happen to the unlucky few but they mustn't despair, as it does clear up in time; you're not going to have Hyperemesis for life if you are one of those unlucky tiny minority. It's hard to strike a balance, though, as I don't want to alarm current sufferers who are just getting by counting on feeling instantly better after birth, as most do. I'm so glad you feel better now and thanks again for your lovely post.

Terrible day, alternatively sleeping and being sick with a headache thrown in. DH not been at all sympathetic, heading back to bed soon

SpecialStains · 02/01/2016 18:41

Hello, mind if I join in? I'm 6 weeks and 3 days (I think), and I've been constantly nauseous for the last fortnight. There is no pattern to when I throw up (e.g. today I didn't until the evening, I've had some days I've thrown up several times in the morning and then others where its been every few hours). Its the constant gagging that gets me. I have gone off most foods, can't open the fridge and have discovered dh has the patience of a saint. Last Tuesday my urine was high in ketones, but that's improved since I've been forcing myself to eat tiny and often.

I'm on Avomine, asked to try cyclizine instead as Avomine just makes me tired, but was told they won't prescribe anything else to pregnant women (bollocks).

Very worried my baby will come out looking like a loaf of bread or a potato, as that's all I can eat. I'm a lifelong vegetarian and haven't touched a vegetable for two weeks.

Took the last week off work, but I want to go back on Monday. Any advice on how to practically cope with this? I'm just miserable and lonely and want my normal life to resume. Sad

MotherofPearl · 02/01/2016 19:13

Welcome Special, and sorry to hear that you're suffering. It sounds as if you already have some experience in dealing with HG, as you know to test for ketones. You're quite right to push for different medication if avomine is not working. As you say, it's nonsense to suggest there are no other options. If your GP is not helpful, is there an EPU near you? Getting seen by a consultant at an EPU is one of the best ways to get proper treatment. Unfortunately you often have to be pretty dehydrated/starved to be admitted. I've had Ondansetron this HG pregnancy and while I am still not 100%, I feel it's made a huge difference to my quality of life. As for work, I know you feel you want to get back to normal, but at 6 weeks you're likely to be entering the worst stage of the sickness (sorry), and HG is so utterly debilitating you simply can't work. I was signed off work for nearly 2 months when I was at my worst. It's frustrating, but rest is the best thing. I really believe that by resting properly and taking good medication I was able to get on top of the sickness much more successfully than in my last pregnancy. I'll be 22 weeks tomorrow. And try not to worry what you eat: the baby will happily thrive on the most atrocious diet. My DS was 9lb and 4oz, and in that pregnancy I threw up every single day, and ate nothing but junk food (not at all my normal diet). Please do stick around on here: it helps so much with the terrible loneliness of this condition.
Iam, many sympathies on the kitchen sink vomit. I'm afraid I'm a kitchen sink vomiter of some repute. We don't have a downstairs loo, so if a bad smell in the kitchen sets me off and I don't think I'm going to make it upstairs, the kitchen sink it is. Nothing that a bit of bleach can't fix!
Madrigal, try not to fret about lack of movement. I've really only started to feel proper movements in the last couple of weeks (22 weeks tomorrow).
Hope everyone else is managing OK. I'm sure I'm not the only one guiltily looking forward to the DC going back to school and nursery next week. Feeling exhausted.

SpecialStains · 02/01/2016 19:50

Thanks for the reply motherofpearl. I've haven't really much experience of pregnancy sickness ( in fact I feel bad at not having been nicer to work colleagues in the past when they were struggling). How have you been feeling over Christmas?

Dh is a gp and he was surprised when I came back from the gp appointment last week where I was told they wouldn't prescribe anything other than avomine (dh suggested I ask for cyclizine, as avomine really hasn't helped) and then started trying to scare me by whittering on about cleft palate abnormalities (wtf?) with any other anti-emetic. They also didn't bother testing my urine which is why dh did it for me when I got home. I've seen two different GPs at my practice and both have been very patronising.

One of the GPs also said they wouldn't consider prescribing me anything else until I tried the sea-band things. Funnily enough, the magic f@#$ing bracelets have not cured me of my ailment. (I promise I'm not usually this grumpy!).

I'll have to see how it goes tomorrow with regards to work. In my heart of hearts I know I'm not fit enough atm, but I really want to go back. I've just realised you can buy buccastem over the counter so may give that a go tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

shoopshoopsong · 02/01/2016 20:13

special welcome and sorry you've had to find us. Excellent advise from MoP and I'd like to echo seeing another doctor because the sooner you get medication that works the sooner you'll feel relief as you enter the hardest weeks. I saw many different out of hours doctors and hospital consultants when my GPs were being useless and went through lots of medication before finding what worked for me (metochlorpromide and ondansetron). Also if you do buy over the counter stuff it's probably best to not mention you're pregnant and just say it's for travel sickness or something otherwise they can be reluctant to give it without prescription.

LucindaE · 02/01/2016 20:18

SpecialStains Welcome. I'm glad your DH will as a doctor understand about anti emetics. I have only a lay person's understanding, but understand that cyclizine has been proven safe in decades of use, and it was one of the others where one study showed a possible unproven connection between use and cleft palate in a tiny proportion of the babies born. If your surgery is being so unhelpful, it might be worth ringing
the Pregnancy Sickness Support helpline (they'll have to ring back, but they will) on 024 7638 2020 about how to get drugs. I'm glad you have an on site tester of your urine. Very useful! A lot of people find that tinned fruit and its juice is bearable, and flat coke, ice lollies, jelly, cheap ice cream, nibbles of crisps, and other such healthy stuff.

Corabell · 02/01/2016 21:40

Hello everyone. I hope fluids are staying down as much as possible. I am now 17 weeks and as sick as ever. In fact I think my sickness has worsened over the past few days. Can this happen so late on? I desperately believed I would feel better after 16 weeks but instead am vomiting despite they ondansatron and stemitil. I planned to go back to work for the new term but I've been signed off again which is in turn making me feel stressed.

SpecialStains · 02/01/2016 21:46

Hi shoopshoopsong and Lucinda, thank you for the sympathy. Hope you're both doing ok. Dh popped over to the supermarket for me and i have buccastem dissolving as I type! I hope this one works. I am going back to my gp practice, there's one nice lady gp with a special interest in women's health, so I'm going to try to get an appointment with her. Hopefully she'll be more sympathetic.

It's the patheticness of how I feel that's getting to me. Hats off to anyone who has already got children - I've already declared several times I'm not doing this again!

I was doing so well with not having any caffeine, until last night when there was a bottle of full fat coke in the fridge. Along with the buccastem dh was also sent to go get another bottle. Grin

MadrigalElectromotive · 02/01/2016 22:01

Welcome to the thread no one wants to be on special. Smile

Thanks everyone for the advice about movements - I will try to stop worrying! I know my placenta is at the front so I'm sure that's partly why.

Have had a terrible day today - uncontrollable vomiting for a significant part of it and gut wrenching nausea for the rest. Feel back to how I was a few weeks ago. Hoping it is just a one day blip and nothing more permanent. Bollocks to this bloody condition improving after the first trimester. Hmm

eallison88 · 02/01/2016 22:51

special my baby boy was grown almost entirely on tinned peaches and he looked very much like a baby! The fact that you can keep some stuff down is a blessing and you should roll with eating and drinking whatever you can. Definitely go see another gp and get yourself some meds. And stick around here, you'll find lots of support.

LucindaE · 03/01/2016 11:39

Madrigal Oh dear, I am sorry. Maybe it is a hormonal surge? I do hope so; if so, it' won't last long.
SpecialStains and eallison There we are, eallision is a great advocate of tinned fruit too. I wonder my own LO didn't look like a bottle of gaviscon, come to think of it. Don't hesitate to ring the number I mentioned below, SpecialStains. (it's also in the blurb). They are great at helping sufferers to obtain meds.
I hope everyone is coping today. I'm off to find the latest Due Dates list to cheer everyone a little.
