I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

welcome special really do fight for meds that work asap.

I'm finally home - let's hope its for more than a couple of days! my birthday Saturday and DS the Saturday after so recall hoping to be home for it.

waves to everyone

squeezed · 03/01/2016 13:13

Special If you feel like eating or drinking anything at all, then just have it. It seems to be much more likely to stay down.

Madrigal Sorry that you're feeling worse. The busyness of this time of year could be taking its toll.

I'm so sick (pardon the pun) of people saying "shouldn't the sickness stop at 12 weeks?". Also thinking that you feel perfectly fine when you're not being sick 15 times a day, oh the nausea. Thank you for that helpful comments random people!

Reebok · 03/01/2016 13:53

Hi everyone, I'm having a bad nausea day. Feel like crap and keep snapping at dd. I'm so happy she's back at nursery tomorrow...that way I can at least rest tomorrow before I return to work on Tuesday. Dreading it but keep reminding myself it's only until March 24th! So if I don't count half term and my antenatal apps, it's roughly 10 working weeks I need to make it through. That's manageable right? I still can't believe that I've only managed 4 weeks or so of work this academic year!

Special welcome to the thread. Sorry to hear you are suffering. Definitely push for a different drug. Cyclizine didn't work for me this pregnancy and I ended up in hospital at 6 weeks which in a way was my saving grace as I was prescribed ondansetron...been on it ever since! While I'm still not hg free at 23 weeks, I'm a lot better than I was but hugely reliant on the drugs to keep me that way. With dd, hg started to subside at 16 weeks so fingers crossed for you!

Sorry to hear about so many being so sick...gentle hugs for you all.

Laying in bed while dd naps at the moment but can't sleep from the sciatic pain. I tell you ladies...I'm definitely done this time! No more children for me. Oh is going to have to get the snip if he wants to come within a yard of me again!

SpecialStains · 03/01/2016 16:20

Hi all, thank you so much for the messages. I hope you're all doing ok.

Just got back from seeing the out of hours gp. He was very lovely and sympathetic and has prescribed me cyclizine. I had ketones in my urine, and I'm really struggling with food today. I don't like any of it. Trying to eat banana with a glass of coke atm.

I'm going to have to be signed off work, I think. I've just dropped my hours so I'm part time as I am returning to uni this week (part time) to do my MSc, so i'll need to talk to my uni supervisor. I'm gutted, I was really looking forward to starting.

This will definitely be an only child.

LucindaE · 03/01/2016 17:38

SpecialStains So glad you got meds. It's disappointing you have to put the Msc on hold, but it's the only thing to do at the moment.
Squeezed Is the nausea relentless? You're always lovely at supporting others, it's a shame people in real life make foolish assumptions about total recovery (I'd like to use a stronger expression, but I'm behaving myself in accordance with my New Year's resolutions).
Reebok Poor old you, and it's not easy on DD, but this will all be a misty memory to her very soon. Roll on maternity leave for you. Ha, ha, about avoiding 'Marital Relations' with OH if he won't have the snip.
Ican't I am glad you are out and hope you manage to celebrate both birthdays.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Feeling a bit better today so hoping is as you suggest Lucinda and I'm having some sort of weird hormonal surge.

Wanted to wish TwoDrifters good luck for tomorrow - I think that's when you are booked in for your section isn't it? This time tomorrow you'll be cuddling your squidgy baby and the hg and birth will be behind you! SmileThanks

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 03/01/2016 19:44

Been away for a few days, back now.

have not read everything but welcome specialstains, glad you got some cyclizine. it can take up to 3 days to take full effect (and sometimes to let the sleepiness wear off), but there are other meds if it doesn't help. It's totally untrue that the only options are cyclizine and avomine, therés several others.

twodrifters very best of luck for tomorrow!!! :)

reebok I get you totally, I was too afraid to go near my husband til I got sterilized!

lilac absolutely lovely to hear from you. Is tinyrain letting you sleep? absolutely agree about not doing too much, though god the temptation to be up and about after finally getting rid of the HG is intense!

spandau sympathies, you and icant and a few others are having such an awful time :( every day is one day down ...

squeezed i do hope the scan goes okay. They can be little buggers, the Passengers.

mother Hen I hope your Mum is managing okay.

madrigal i hope things are improving even more now and it was just a bad day ...

In the interests of not posting an essay like i usually do, I will wave at everyone else and wish them the very best for 2016... Improving sickness and an easy delivery. (ealli how was tinyalli's christmas? :) )

eallison88 · 03/01/2016 20:23

onceameer It was lovely, thanks. I think he enjoyed it!

special glad you've got meds. As others have said, don't hesitate to go back to docs if they don't work. They do for some and not for others, but a onceameer says, there are other options that work in different ways and are stronger. Keep eating and drinking whatever takes your fancy and dint stress about how healthy stuff is or isn't.

Hope everyone else is doing Ok today! Welcome to the year you meet your babies!

MotherofPearl · 03/01/2016 22:10

Hello All. Lucinda, hope you've managed to have a break these holidays, as well as looking after your mother. My due date is 7 May - those fewer days make all the difference! Wink
TwoDrifters, good luck for tomorrow; hope it all goes smoothly. Do pop on to share your news when you get a moment.
Squeezed, I totally understand how frustrating it is when people assume you're fine just because you're past the ketosis and hospital phase. The other day I was at DP's parents' house and was feeling so nauseous. When I mentioned this, his father said 'why, what's the matter?'!!!! I thought I was going to punch him!
Madrigal, hoping the relapse continues to improve. It's awful to feel back to square one.
Reebok, hope you have a really good rest tomorrow. As you say, it's not all that long to get through. We've staggered well past the halfway mark now, thankfully.
Icant, glad you're home again. Do give us a full debrief when you have time and aren't feeling too wretched.
Strength to everyone going back to work this week, and good luck to Special with the Cyclizine. It does help a lot of people.

Reebok · 03/01/2016 22:42

Thanks Mop. Hopefully we will all manage to feel better soon enough.

Two good luck for tomorrow! Will be thinking of you.

In so much pain. Feels like really awful contractions in my back - I had back labour with dd and it killed pretty much like it does now. Think it's Braxton hicks as its way too early for anything else. Have tried paracetamol and a hot water bottle but neither are touching the pain. Pity I took the paracetamol as I have cohydramol (sp??) arghhh I hate being pregnant!!!

TwoDrifters · 03/01/2016 23:03

Thank you all! I have to be at the hospital for 07:30 so am attempting to sleep now but am far too excited/scared! I have felt really sick all day today and cannot wait for the feeling to pass - I hope it does!

I will let you all know as soon as I have any news. Keep on enduring, everyone! Flowers

eallison88 · 03/01/2016 23:59

Good luck twodrifters I'll be thinking of you tomorrow (today?).

BarmeeMarmee · 04/01/2016 07:59

Thinking of you TwoDrifters -how exciting!

Waves to everyone else.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 04/01/2016 08:16

Thinking of you twdrifters :)

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 04/01/2016 08:32

good luck twodrifters :)

immortalwife · 04/01/2016 08:49

motherofpearl and eallison yes it's my first HG pg. last pregnancy I plan on having. Spent the last week or so keeping myself out of hospital by the skin of my teeth. Didn't get any meds first time round as it was a man and he felt it was mind over matter and they wouldn't work anyway as it was a hormonal reaction. I get the hormone part as I'm having oestrogen migraines too. A dr (woman) came to the house when I was too weak to move and prescribed me metaclopramide and low dose codeine. Feeling better on occasional days then relapsing despite the meds. I'm so tired and off work at mo, feeling like I can't function.
First midwife appt today. Will hopefully be told when my actual due date is. Fingers crossed.

TwoDrifters · 04/01/2016 10:03

Well I just got called up for my section and they gave me a quick scan to check the baby's position and he's only gone and flipped! Head now engaged so I am going home to await the natural order of things. Been up since 05:30 so it's been a bit of a roller coaster emotion wise and I'm very tired!

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 04/01/2016 10:37

Ha ... BABIES! good luck and bad luck there both two!

Hoping it all kicks off naturally very soon for you :)

immortal that male dr was a total fuckwit. Meds don't work as it was a hormonal reaction? Oh dear god, the man was either lying through his teeth or so incompetent he should be struck off.

If the metoclopramide doesn't work, there are several other meds available (have you tried cyclizine? it's good, but don't take it with metoclopramide. Also, if you get twitchy/restless limbs on meto., contact your dr/pharmacist as soon as you can. It's perfectly safe for the baby though).

eallison88 · 04/01/2016 11:40

twodrifters yay for flippy engaged baby! Fingers crossed things progress quickly! My boys head wasn't engaged when my contractions started,so hopefully that means things will progress with haste!

immortal glad you're on meds. I echo onceameers sentiments re first doctor.

immortalwife · 04/01/2016 11:54

I get restless limbs anyway due to jhs so I'm not sure I would notice! Yeah man-dr didn't really seem to have a clue. Lady-dr tutted at man-Drs ineptitude and wrote me a script.

Mw app is at half three. I've been bleeding slightly all weekend so hoping they can reassure me. My 2yo just came back from playgroup with my wonderful MIL who is taking me and hubby to appt in 2nd village over and will babysit 2yo while we go in. Thank god for my family they've really helped.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 04/01/2016 12:18

jhs?

immortal, have a word with the pharmacist. Very rarely metoclopramide can trigger that kind of restlessness and it's very uncomfortable and worst of all, it has a small chance of being permanent. It's perfectly safe for the baby, but even so .. you don't want to be stuck with that restlessness. It's just possible the jhs (whatever that is!) could mask this.

these are the other common meds, ondansetron being the hardest to get and most expensive and ofc, the most expensive Hmm

cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine; can make you sleepy)
Metoclopramide (empties the stomach faster, less to upchuck)
Domperidone (similar)
Prochlorperazine (stemetil/Avomine/Buccastem) (works on your sense of balance; also a travel remedy; can be good for some people).
Promethazine (called Phenergan)(stronger old fashioned anti-histamine, also sleepy-making)
Ondansetron (the strongest and many people find the best, but causes constipation).

immortalwife · 04/01/2016 12:48

onceameer I have joint hypermobile syndrome. It's the reason I won't be doing this again as its to stressful on my joint tissue.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 04/01/2016 12:52

ahhh right! yeah that sounds v stressful on the joints :(

MotherofPearl · 04/01/2016 14:18

Two, glad that you've managed to avoid a C-section, but you must also be disappointed about having to wait. All that bouncing on the birth ball must have done the trick!
Immortal, it's great to hear that you have good family support. Makes all the difference. Let us know when you have your due date so that Lucinda can add you to our list.
On my way home on the train from a morning at work, and feeling so tired and sick. Had a terrible night's sleep last night. Wish I could conquer the nausea. Have to fetch DD from school and then get DS from nursery, so no chance of an afternoon rest, sadly.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 04/01/2016 14:53

oh dear MoP, wishing you strength. morning sickness is so debilitating, never mind HG ... :(
