Hope everybody is well. I was reading through this thread last night and amazed that we are now all mostly past the 12 week mark. The next milestone is the 24 week one and of course the 20 week scan.

I am now 15 weeks and have a lovely bump - mainly fat but def some baby there as well. I can also feel some fluttering. Great watching ER last night and feeling baby move!

miffy2 - I am from Ireland and I thought the reason scans aren't necessarily offered routinely is there is no question of terminating a pregnancy whatever the outcome. I do think in this country there is quite a lot of emphasis placed on what you would do if you found something wrong, and advise given on invasive tests and abortions without the alternative view being presented.

Well ds1 and 2 are in nursery all day today while dh and I have a day off together. Cannot wait as this will be our first real opportunity in a while to have some quality time together.

oooh eyelash, enjoy your day with DH! My DH was unemployed for a while recently and as I work 4 days a week, we played hooky one afternoon and went to a 2pm showing in the cinema. We felt really naughty for some reason, like we should be with the kids but wanted to be kids ourselves!

Turtle35 · 13/04/2004 16:00

My Mother is Irish as is my DH and therefore I hope you didn't think I was having a dig at Ireland or Irish people!!

Yes indeed the reason the testing isn't done in Ireland is because abortion is illegal but what if there was something wrong with the baby that medication could fix during pregnancy? It's possible - no.

miffy2 · 13/04/2004 16:55

Don't get me wrong, tests ARE available, they are just not all done as standard, on every mum2be. To behonest I am quite glad as from what I have read on this board and others, people are often frightened by having the tests done, frightened not to do them, frightened of the results etc.

My OB on my last two pgs was the top foetal expert in the country so even though I only had one routine scan at 18 weeks I knew I was in good hands.
It would be great to have more scans available as standard to everyone (lack of resources and current over-crowding in maternity services!) but even scans and tests cannot always show the severity of (or indeed the lack of severity) until the baby is born.
Anyway, probably abother discussion for another thread! Hope you are all doing well and looking forward to the blooming second trimester

Turtle35 · 13/04/2004 18:40

I just heard that babies born to woman who eat chocolate on a reular basis are much happier babies!! Enjoy those Easter Eggs ladies.

florenceuk · 13/04/2004 19:06

Just waited for over an hour to get my nuchal scan done as today was the absolute last day they could do it - DS was really very good and waited really patiently (even allowing for steady supply of biscuits, crackers and raisins). My risk factor has gone from 1 in 200 to about 1 in 1000 which is fine by me. Baby wiggled around and waved its arms, let us count all the fingers and toes. £3 for the piccie, £5 for parking! One way of making money from the NHS.

Have had cravings for prawn cocktail lately, smoked salmon and McD Fillet o Fish!!! Is smoked salmon OK or not? No throwing up today, yay! Must be all that Coke I'm drinking. Or maybe it's just the magic 13wks (I'm now 13+1)???

piglit · 13/04/2004 19:08

Great news florence. Now you can sit back and enjoy all those Easter eggs.

eyelash · 14/04/2004 12:35

Turtle35 - I didn't think you were having a dig at irish people at all . And love the chocolate theory as well.

FlorenceUK - great news re your scan.

DH and I had a lovely day yesterday - did some shopping, lunch, walk in park and even had a stress-free supermarket shop. Felt all invigorated last night.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Glad to hear everyone sounds well.

Can I just ask what everyone thinks about the knowing-the-sex-of-of-the-baby issue?
Was watching "Friends" last night, and it was the one where, bizarrely, even though Rachel is about 8 weeks pg, they tell her the sex of the child. But then again, don't start me on that - this is woman who is rarely sighted with her child, and for whom motherhood seems to mostly entail carrying around a baby surveillance monitor. I have taken to shouting "OMG, look, there she is!" whenever the child is on screen.

But I digress.... me and DP have different views on the wanting to know before s/he is born thing, and I was just wondering what you all think about this?

Hope you are all enjoying the long weekend....

piglit · 14/04/2004 14:43

We'll definitely be asking the sex at the 20 week scan. No particular reason and we don't have any preference. We'd just love to know. And it means we won't have to call the baby "it" anymore!!

Have a great long weekend everyone.

Harman I am with you on that one! I have never even doubted that I didn't want to know. There is nothing like the element of surprise for me.

Bean I watched that episode of Friends to and my DH keeps saying "so where is the supposed baby" she has shown up in about two or three episodes.

have a great weekend all

scruff · 14/04/2004 23:15

is anyone still being sick at 12 weeks had to go to doc today and get antinausea tablets hardly keeping anything down and in need of some sympathy at the end of my thether. Any kind word would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone is well

beansprout · 15/04/2004 00:10

Scruff, really sorry to hear that. I still had my sickness at 12 weeks, but it was not as bad as yours sounds. Really hope that the stuff doc gave you helps, as it sounds really miserable. I hope it passes for you soon.

piglit · 18/04/2004 12:10

Scruff - my sickness went away at 13/14 weeks but at the time I thought it would never go. Try not to get too tired as that seems to make it much worse.

miffy2 · 18/04/2004 12:27

scruff,
sorry to hear you are still suffering from sickness. Me too, albeit to a lesser extent. I will be 13 weeks tomorrow and for the last 10 days or so I have only been sick in the evenings.

Things I find that help are:

  • not eating and drinking together (ie drink between meals)
  • eating lots of starchy foods - bagels, toast etc. Unfortunately chocolate makes me really sick right now and I am a complete chocoholic!
  • eating something every couple of hours - avoiding getting hungry seems to help.

Anyway, it does generally pass by 14 weeks or so, so chin up and we are here for you!

Hope everyone else enjoyed the long weekend. At last count we have 13 easter eggs in the house, and there is no way the two kids are eating all of that, so once I get over this sickness lark, choc heaven here I come!

Toots · 18/04/2004 14:01

Scruff, that's awful, had no idea it was so bad. Please let us know how you are doing with the tablets.

Miffy2, we too have mucho chocolato in the house. Consumed a lindt bunny's head last night. Felt a bit savage snapping it off. Hope you're up to yours soon.

Beansprout, any better shopping experiences to report? Always anxious once I've recommended somewhere!

beansprout · 18/04/2004 15:23

Thanks Toots - had a much better shopping experience on Saturday at H&M, Next and DP's, all in Oxford Street. Now have some clothes that actually fit me properly... ahhh, bliss....

Apart from that, have stinking lurgy (mainly a v. nasty Steptoe like cough) so am about to slope back to my bed. No drugs allowed. Boo

M2T · 18/04/2004 15:27

Beansprout - just wanted to drop in and add that you can take paracetamol and some of those old style linctus bronchial mixtures (If you're brave enough!). They should ease the chesty cough a bit.

Turtle35 · 19/04/2004 15:28

Bean sorry to hear you are sick that must be depressing with such beautiful weather.

I had my first scan yesterday and it went really well. I was so nervous I felt sick before hand and it turned out to be normal, the nuchal measurement was 1.8, 1.7 and 1.6 but it was recorded as the highest which brought me into 1:757 for 35 years old so midwife didn't feel it was necessary to go for any further testing - phew! My DH was emotional he had tears in his eyes, I think it made it more real for him to see the little heart beat.

Has anyone else had similar results?

piglit · 19/04/2004 15:34

Great news Turtle - it's such a relief to get the scan over with, isn't it? I only really began to relax once I'd had the nuchal scan. Can I interest you in a celebratory chocolate biscuit?

beansprout · 19/04/2004 15:54

Turtle - that's great news. How did you feel when you saw the little one on the screen?! I had the same first measurement (1.7) but am having the triple test so I don't actually get the results for a few weeks yet. Am 34 so thank you for posting your results as I didn't know what mine meant!

Have been to the docs today as seem to be getting worse. Have been told to rest and have some yucky linctus to take. I somehow hadn't really made the connection between being pg and taking longer to get over a cough/cold (doh!!).

How is everyone else? Scruff - how is the sickness? Will join Piglit in eating a biscuit (for medicinal purposes of course).

scruff · 19/04/2004 16:47

Hope everyone had a great Easter. Sickness still here don't know if med is doing any good Got another 2 weeks off work but feeling guilty about it. hoping next week week 14 might see it ease greatly!!! Hope you all enjoy your EEggs(those of you who can eat them. Thanks a mil for the support!!!

Turtle35 · 19/04/2004 17:11

Scruf I had a friend whose sickness stopped at 14 weeks so I am sure yours will to - I will be thinking of you. I think I got off pretty lucky with that, had two weeks of feeling like I wanted to throw up but it only happened twice thankfully, I can sympathize with you though, it gets the better of you at times.

Bean you poor thing, I wouldn't of realised that either but when you think of it, the baby is stealing your nutrients and so on and not leaving you with much to fight off the bug - it really is amazing for such a little thing what it can do to our bodies. I was so amazed when I saw it, I am sure it waved at me! Actually it was just flailing its arms about but it did look like a wave!! he he

Turtle35 · 19/04/2004 17:14

By the way did someone mention a chocolate biscuit? I just can't get enough of that stuff.
