Hi all, isn't it funny how we are all clearly thinking/doing similar stuff with our pregnancy.

I tried the Bugaboo which looks really great but £500 and a Maclaran which is much cheaper but not heavy. I think you need to test out a lot before making decisions?

Turtle35 · 06/06/2004 18:57

Oh forgot to mention the friends with the Bugaboo say it doesn't fold down so it's a bit clunky.

Turtle35 · 06/06/2004 18:59

Oh and as for working out - Toots I am sure you have best intentions but PHLEESE!!!

I actually ordered some Yoga and Pilates DVD's through Amazon and will let you all know how they are.

huppa · 06/06/2004 19:02

Welcome Allyco hope your sickness soon improves.
I´ve just got back from my scan and everything was o.k. Confirmed he was a boy by spreading his legs at the appropriate moment.
On the fitness front i`m afraid I was totally unfit before this pregnancy and I´m only getting worse. I keep telling myself I´ll get back into shape afterwards. The fact I didn´t manage it with dd means it´s unlikely with 2 children.
Can´t really help on the TS front - I´m not sure we have the same manufacturers here in Germany. As beansprout said weight is very important - there were quite a few that I simply couldn´t lift on my own. Mind you that could have had something to do with my lack of fitness.

beansprout · 06/06/2004 19:09

Glad everything was ok with the scan huppa and congratulations on your ds!
Maybe you have hit on the perfect solution - we can all buy unfeasibly heavy TSs and get back into shape that way?

Dp was scoffing at the prams that have a drinks holder "for women who stand yapping by Starbucks no doubt ha ha" until I pointed out that it's actually for the child's drink. He kept quiet after that.

Wouldn't mind, but he already has two - it's me that is the novice!

sooz31 · 06/06/2004 19:10

Yup, we were in John Lewis baby department along with 000s of others too! I can't believe how expensive they all are. We had a look at the bugaboo too (already have a Maclaren techno which I can HIGHLY recommend esp. for urban mums), but 500 quid!! we want something to stroll DB2 in a bit more comfort now we are much closer to lovely park but that can also attach buggy board for DS1 - chins are on the floor at prices!

IMO the travel systems (3 in 1) are great for first 3 months, but become a bit of a pain after that... for DS1 we got a separate car seat and the Maclaren (with cosy foot muff) which was all we needed (at the time we lived in a 1st floor flat, where space was v. restricted).

sooz31 · 06/06/2004 19:14

Congratulations on little DS huppa! great news!

Allyco · 06/06/2004 23:11

thanks for all messages. Was only sick once today yee hah.

Am still feeling very new and as though I don't know much about anyone. Would anyone have time/inclination to let me know when everyone else due and what they've already got. For info I am due 6th October and alreadys have three dds. The eldest is 18 (what on earth am i doing getting pregnant and going through all this again?)then one nearly twelve and one six. Feel like I should be old hand now but everything's still very scary this time around. Has anyone else got big age gaps?

beansprout · 06/06/2004 23:47

Hi Allyco. There should be a list of due dates, ages and other children further down the thread, which we will update.

This is my first but dp's third. He has 2 dds, one 18 (but lives abroad) and one 16, so I have just a very small idea of the age gap thing (although dp would know a lot more about it!).

Sooz - thanks for your TS views - really helpful.
Is anyone else test driving at the moment?

beansprout · 06/06/2004 23:51

Oh and agree with Turtle - the price of some of this stuff is nothing short of frightening. And people ask me if I am still working!! Er, yes....!!!

geogteach · 07/06/2004 00:16

Fitness - uhhh last went to yoga about 3 weeks ago and fell asleep so i'm hiding in embarrassment and waiting for a place to be available in the antenatal one!
For the wheels - I had a 3 wheeler 1st time round which I love and still use if walking from the house but getting in the car is a pain, 2nd time maclaren techno (brill and you can get a good discount on kiddiecare.com) with buggy board, now as i'm managing to get the age gaps closer and closer I am going to become a double buggy owner (swore I never would, but expecting a 16 month old to hold on to a buggy board is a bit optomistic even by my standards), fancy an expensive double decker new zealand one but may have to make do with maclaren i've been offered by friends!

thanx beansprout found list further down thread. Doh.

Toots · 07/06/2004 14:02

Hi Harman. Sorry to hear things are still so stressful. Worse things happen than a few cigarettes, my mum didn't even cut down when she was pregnant with me, but if you can help it don't go back full time. If nothing else, it you need the cash for the kids. Can totally understand you not wanting ex p around. Are you settled with somewhere to stay yet?

On the wheels front - we'll probably manage with what we've got: second hand britax ts - bit naff, teddy bear print, and when bigger Maclaren, not techno, next one down, forget name. It's got the small wheels, and they're almost worn away to stumps so will have to try and replace. Also got given a kiddiboard, so we'll see if dd will have it. Would be nice to avoid doubleness, but she often likes a good flop after nursery, so might not get away with it.

miffy2 · 07/06/2004 14:20

Harman,
good to see you back on this thread.
Don't worry about a few cigs, whatever it takes to make you feel better is worth it.

WRT wheels etc, I have a Graco T/S from baby #1 (when I knew v. little and there were no mummy websites like this). Great for local walks as pram v sturdy and lies flat, but not so easy to fold down (need 2 hands) and also takes up most of car boot.

A few mths ago I treated myself (?) to a new Mamas & Papas TS ( was €366 so about £250 as the fabric was going out of stock). Folds down umbrella-style and fits well in boot but sturdy enough for long walks.

Some tips for urban car-driving mums - practice collapsing buggy to see how you would manage alone. See if it fits into your car boot (and imagine adding your grocery shopping too). See if buggy seat reclines fully (NB for newborns). How easy is fabric to wipe clean (think puke, sticky lollies, juice etc)?

Definitely from about 6 months a Maclaren or other is advisable so try not to splash out too much on a T/S with baby car seat.

florenceuk · 07/06/2004 18:14

Hi everyone

Feeling very tired, but that might just be the 6am wakings, thanks to DS, combined with 11pm bedtimes (thanks to DH). Also feeling like I have both eaten too much (bloated, tight tummy) and not enough (hungry!). I have developed a craving for sweetcorn with lashings of butter and salt. Plus the usual second breakfast of an apricot danish and a chai latte at Starbucks....

On TS I wouldn't bother, but maybe that's just me (London-based) as I rarely went out in the car, mostly walked everywhere. You just need to think when you are likely to be in the situation of having bubs in the car and then needing to wheel them around. Also there are now dire warnings about leaving little babies in carseats for too long - now I think they are a bit overstated but at the time I was completely paranoid. I have a 3-wheeler (Mountain Buggy) which took a carrycot, and was very comfortable for the little blighter when he wouldn't sleep in his cot. It wouldn't have worked so well for somebody who went on buses a lot though (in which case I might have bought a Chicco or a M&P which went completely flat). I also have a Maclaren Techno bought cheap off kiddicare.com for travelling, which I am thinking of upgrading to the new style Techno so I have a lightweight buggy which actually lies flat. Practically everyone I know has a Maclaren, so don't go too overboard on that first buggy!

BIBIBOO · 08/06/2004 12:23

Hi All,

Me and dh went new car vs buggy-that-fits shopping yesterday - the outcome..? I get to keep the car!!! We found a Graco TS that does fit into oddly shaped boot (only just mind you). I was v tempted to go down the car seat and good buggy road instead of getting a TS, but having tried Maclarens and Mothercare buggies in boot, I decided I'd have to stick with TS for time being and they were all too long! As for exercise, I think I'm going to get lovely, toned arms from lifting the TS into the boot all the time, the rest of me won't benefit much though!

Went to see Bill Bailey last night and baby loved/hated the music bits - couldn't tell whether it was love or hate, but it made him move about a lot!

Turtle35 · 08/06/2004 17:08

Does anyone else get a sore backside when sitting for more than an hour? my 40 minute tube ride is starting to really hurt, not sure if standing is better now?

think I am looking about 7 months pg instead of 5, someone at work thought I was leaving soon to go on maternity leave

Turtle35 · 08/06/2004 17:14

Harman pleased you are back on MN. Is your p giving you the impression that he wont feel the same way about this bub as the others because you have having problems? Can I be brutally honest and say if that is the case then he doesn't deserve to be with you and the children. Sorry I know that sounds mean but I really feel this should be a time for YOU and ensuring your health (especially mental health) is looked after and nurtured.

PS don't beat yourself up over the cigs, I had a few sneaky ones in the beginning when I was trying to give up and felt so guilty about it. I haven't had one for over 3 months now and still at times think (ohhhhh wouldn't it be nice) but it's not worth it. Take care Harman and go with what you feel is best for you and the children. LOL

beansprout · 08/06/2004 17:29

Good advice on the wheels meeces - I actually feel like I have a decent idea of what I need to get now.

Good to hear from you Harman, hope you are ok.

Yep, backache is becoming a real issue here. My groaning when I get up and down probably looks a bit exaggerated given current bump size, but it's really back related. Will go to yoga tonight and knacker my thigh muscles too if last week is anything to go by. Ah, to be an old crock eh?!

The only muscle I try to exercise at the moment is ye olde pelvic floor. Please god I don't have to cross my legs when I sneeze for the rest of my days!

BIBIBOO · 08/06/2004 18:42

Pelvic floor is essential ladies - I only leaked a little bit when I sneazed the other day, but my god have I kept those muscles exercised ever since!!!

florenceuk · 08/06/2004 19:06

My back was incredibly sore on Tuesday when I had to look after DS all day (my day at home) - guess it was from lifting him up and down the stairs, out of the high chair etc etc. What with sore bump, achey joints and knackered pelvic floor I am not the picture of health!!

Turtle35 · 08/06/2004 19:07

I keep forgetting to do the pelvic floor and must get going on it, am doing them now!!

Bean I feel more confused on the wheels front, what are you gonna go with? We have a car that I am happy to leave the car seat in all the time and so I don't think we need a TS? have heard John Lewis will explain all of this in an hour session at the shop. Have also read about not to leave the little one in a car seat for more than an hour!

Does anyone have an opion on fake tans? I used to go for this excellent spray on St. Tropez that looked really natural but now I am nervous to do it.

beansprout · 08/06/2004 19:08

Florence - my bump gets sore too. Is that the muscles stretching away? Or the sheer weight of looking like I have eaten 500 pies?

Turtle35 · 08/06/2004 19:17

Bean I think it is the stretching and wonder if it ever stops until the bubster is born? some times it really hurts.
