OneLittleToddleTerror · 22/04/2014 22:29

mabel can I ask how old are your older children? I have a 3yo and I haven't told her yet. I'm wondering should I tell her after the 20wk scan or much later (like start of 3rd trimester).

MabelMay · 22/04/2014 22:48

Thanks jbrd - I won't get blood results back for another week or so so still waiting on all the genetic testing they do out here (USA)

onelittletoddler my DCs are 6 and 8 so much more aware of everything and even noticed my big belly the other day. It would be v hard to keep from them much longer. But if I had a younger DC I would probably wait until 20 weeks if I could. Totally up to you though. It's v personal choice.

MabelMay · 23/04/2014 01:00

Oh, and again onelittletoddler yes you'd know fairly quickly if you'd caught anything. It's so unlikely though. I think it's e.coli they're worried about at feeding/petting farms? Which I ended up with through a urine infection a few weeks ago - (since treated with antibiotics). I really wouldn't worry - but that's impossible on this thread.

I had some brie without thinking the other day and cursed myself for the next 24 hours and became convinced I'd catch listeriosis or whatever it is.

Also, to add to your comments about how many people don't really understand the impact of miscarriage, one of my close friends - who took a really long time to conceive (albeit without any MCs), so I assumed she'd be sympathetic - was really dismissive of my two MCs, despite me telling her how devastated I was after the second. I haven't felt close to her since. Bit sad really.

Alb1 · 23/04/2014 02:25

Havnt been able to come on much recently but jus wanted to congratulate mabel and mrsg on the good scan news!

Welcome to the newbies, hope ur all have long uneventful pregnancys!

MabelMay · 23/04/2014 06:04

Thanks alb!

MrsGiraffe12 · 23/04/2014 06:58

mabel that's fab news xx bet your so excited to tell the world :-)

squitz good luck today xx

CallingAllEngels · 23/04/2014 07:13

That's so sad about your friend's reaction to mc mabel. I was lucky that everyone I've told (and after 2nd mc I told pretty much everone!) has been really supportive.

When we were ttc DS and no one knew it was taking so long it was a different story. So many people just don't realise that it's not simple for everyone toddle.

I wouldn't worry about the brie mabel unless you bought it from a French Farm, direct from the cow. Most supermarket sold cheese is made from pasteurised milk anyway. I will be careful with goats cheese and blue cheese, but brie is on my list of things I can eat! Though, we're planning on going on holiday to France this year and almost crying at the thoughts of all the meats and cheese I won't be able to eat!

toddle you just have to make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. You've reminded me that I need to make sure I have some new, clean gloves for gradening in case of rogue cat poo!

Signing off for a few days ladies. We're going to England today to see my family so lots of zoos, shopping, eating and drinking not wine obviously Good luck for all scans and see you next week.

amicablemoomin · 23/04/2014 07:27

That's great news on all the scans ladies!

I had a horrible anxious day with bad cramping all day, but today it feels better, although very tender so am trying to be optimistic. Made worse yesterday by 'treating' myself to an episode of one born every minute....why why why.....

A week till my doc appointment, so based on previous experience probably another week until my first scan. oh to be there now, at seven weeks.......!

bakingtins · 23/04/2014 07:35

Brilliant news mabel hopefully you can relax a bit now! Grin

OLTT we told our boys, who are 3 and 7, after our 13 week scan. If it was just the younger one I think I'd have waited, it's such a long time away from his POV even now. Our older son was quite anxious about all the hospital appointments etc I was having, it was good to be able to reassure him at that point.
The main issue at city farms etc is toxoplasmosis which you can catch from sheep and goats at lambing/kidding time ( and cat poo/ soil contaminated with cat poo) but also E.coli, salmonella etc from animal faeces. Very basic hygiene will protect you. I'm a vet, I have been lambing sheep and handling sick cats for the last 25 years and I have not been exposed! Be sensible, don't kiss any sheep, wash your hands (and your vegetables) and make your partner clean the litter trays, but beyond that don't worry.

squiz thinking of you today. Good luck!

CorporeSarnie · 23/04/2014 08:01

Off I go (1st appointment of the day). No sleep since 4ish, but as positive as I can be. Wish us luck.
Congrats on the good news from mrsg & Mabel.

QuietTiger · 23/04/2014 08:18

Onelittletoddleterror Try not to worry about going to the farm and the signs you saw. :) I'm super high risk at the moment, as DH is a farmer in the middle of lambing and we have 16 bottle lambs in the yard that I have to feed. We also have 10 cats, with associated litter boxes...

The secret is really, really good hygiene. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap in warm/hot water, and as bakingtins says, don't go snogging any sheep or eating any cat poo and you'll be fine! (I know it doesn't helpWink)

QuietTiger · 23/04/2014 08:20

Oh, and like bakingtins, I haven't caught toxoplasmosis yet. :)

OneLittleToddleTerror · 23/04/2014 08:28

Thanks for all the reassurance ladies. I know I just need some slapping to get myself together!

We have a cat who uses litter boxes. Best thing about pregnancy is not having to clean up her poo Grin. Engels you reminded me of getting some new garden gloves. I'm not sure if I have caught toxoplasmosis already. It's one of those things you can only get once isn't it?

Good luck squiz and CorporeSarnie today.

CorporeSarnie · 23/04/2014 11:02

Thanks terror, I think as other more qualified posters have said, that the toxo risk of just being in the same place as birthing lambs etc., is not that bad, and is removed by hand washing. Although having grown up with a cat I have always assumed I had probably had it (no actual idea, but it didn't affect DD).
So, all went well. Baby is in there, quite quietly pootling about, very normal CRL and NT measurements, arms and legs and a nasal bone, so will await the serum measurements now. Strangely I don't feel as elated as I expected to, want to wait for the PAPP-A and HCG results before I start talking to people really.
May perhaps be down to lack of sleep last night I guess. Currently trying to fight off the urge to take a late break/early lunch to refill my ever-rumbling tummy.

squizita · 23/04/2014 11:19

Apologies- quick mememe.

Baby is very quiet and placid today. Had horrendous constipation and a painful 'motion' yesterday, then prune juice, then a loose one. This freaked it out last time so may well just be that, and I have felt some flutters to be fair. Also DH suggested the poo might have squashed everything closer to the surface/easier to feel. There was a lot. Grin
Just paranoid cos of the scan!

JBrd · 23/04/2014 11:32

Good luck corpore and squiz for your appointments/scans today! Let us know how you get on.

OLTT I tried to get any information about 'personal' consultant stats regarding their success rate with amnio - no luck. I will try asking him/her directly when I go in on Monday (or Wednesday).

I've also got two cats - DH is on litter tray duty Grin, but they go mostly outside anyway.
I second the advice about just being sensible - washing hands and food etc. I have to admit that I have had some of the 'forbidden' foods, mainly cured meats when I was visiting my mum in Switzerland - they have just wonderful stuff there.

What about cat sick? One of them threw up a lot last night, and I made DH get up to clean it all up, poor bloke. I'm a bit worried about the poor cat, some of the sick had blood in it Sad Normally I wouldn't be too worried, as she is always eating grass and bringing up hairballs, but this was different... Just one more thing to fret about!

Wonderful news MrsG, I'm so pleased for you.

Oh Mabel, that is wonderful! Smile Smile Smile Delighted for you.

Corpore sounds like you're in shock! Fantastic news! So happy for you. Let it sink in. Grin

Well, what lovely news for this morning ladies!

Did your mat clothes survive Fedup?!

"Don't kiss any ship" !!! Lol Baking that made me chorttle!

Good luck Squiz!

The waiting room was stressful today but the Dr was lovely. Apparently I may be developing mild asthma (cos of hormones) but at the mo it doesn't need treating. Have to see if it gets worse which it might not, it might go away, but if it does it would be standard asthma treatment, which wouldn't effect baby. So. That's that and I survived! Hurray!

16 weeks today, which feels huge. Going to tell some friends today.

LondonJen · 23/04/2014 11:44

Er, sheep even. Not sure you can catch much from ships Confused

QuietTiger · 23/04/2014 12:19

Oh dear- I think I need to get a grip. Someone give me a slap!

I've just ordered a job lot of cheap pg tests from amazon so I can check if I'm still up-duffed! This is besides the 4 I did on Monday and the 3 I did yesterday... I'm supposed to be a sane and sensible "farmers wife" type. DH just finds me obsessing funny. Confused

MrsGiraffe12 · 23/04/2014 13:00

quiettiger time for your first wet fish slap :-) you have had positive tests. You are pregnant. Put down the tests an back away slowly.

But really, it's normal to be scared. I took 6 in total before I would believe it myself. You just need to try and have a little faith in your body, which is tough after a loss I know xx

OneLittleToddleTerror · 23/04/2014 13:21

Fish slap to quiettiger. But it is totally normal to want reassurance. I'm sure many of us did use those internet chpeaies to check if we were still pregnant before the scan. If it gives you a little bit of peace of mind it's not that bad is it?

Emki · 23/04/2014 13:54

Great scan news ladies - well done!

bakingtins · 23/04/2014 14:48

Congratulations corpore it's sometimes quite hard to grasp that it's all ok.

londonjen scurvy, maybe? Grin Glad you were reassured by the doctor.

jbrd it's unlikely your cat is shedding toxo anyway, it tends to be a short lived thing in young cats when they first start hunting, it's only faeces that are infected (and you have to get some in your mouth - yuck) and only after they have incubated for 2 days. You are most likely to pick it up from contaminated soil. You are safe to clean litter trays if you do it daily, wear gloves and wash your hands, but don't tell DH that. Hope your cat is ok today.
Toxo is only a worry if you pick up a new infection in pregnancy, quite a large proportion of the population are already immune. Can't believe I'm not really, given that I have worked with pregnant sheep, sick cars and I garden, but it just shows that hand washing is all you need.

squizita · 23/04/2014 17:02

One little provided you washed hands etc I'm sure it would be fine just to look at farm animals! You'd have flu like symptoms if you caught it.

Mabel UK brie is pasteurised anyway, so should be OK!

Moomin hope your cramps sort out. Obem - still too yuk/scary for me. I'm of the opinion god put fanjos where we can't see them for that very reason! Grin

Corpore Woop good scan news.

Jbird :( for your cat.

tiger fishslaaap! :) Of course you are upduffed!

London good to know its not serious, hope the asthma stays mild.

Waves to Baking, MrsG, Emki, Engels and all!

Scan "normal" in every way, except baby has a chubby belly. Consultant happy: it appears the belly isn't an abnormality just a body shape thing! Body is long, she thinks it may end up "big"! Shock reads up on pain relief
Oh, but also not "it" any more... She's a girl. :)

JBrd · 23/04/2014 17:11

Congrats squiz on being team Pink, that is wonderful! Now you can start on fighting discussing names for real Grin
I don't think that the measurements at 20 weeks can be taken for granted regards the final 'outcome' - you still have another 20 to go, lots of changes ahead!

Corpore Great scan news! It takes a while to sink in, but do enjoy it when it does Smile

tiger I'm throwing the leftovers of my salmon lunch in your direction! Stop testing, that way madness lies.

London Good to hear it's 'only' asthma (this is not meant to sound patronising). In the grand scheme of things, this can be dealt with quite easily, yes? Fingers crossed it stays mild.

I am so tired today, which makes me feel slightly nauseous, bleurgh. Early night for me today, I think! I'm rubbish at getting early nights, though, hence me being tired a lot more that I need to be. Spot the vicious circle.
