Parenting question folks - my DS is in his 2nd yr at high school and was a lovely lad, quiet, nice natured, bot into sports but loves computers etc anyhooo his behaviour is getting quite worrying, I found out today that he had detention for not doing his homework and I was getting really worried as he hadn't arrived home, so I contacted his mate who dropped him in it.

As he got in I asked where he had been - I got a barrage of lies, I told him I'd contacted the school and new more than I had let on (I hadn't) he then confesses that he had had a few detentions - I'm really gutted and I don't know whaf to do

Penguinita · 06/02/2014 18:20

Hooray christine, congratulations! She is quite a big girl too, did you really do it all without pain relief? Respect!

Hoping for the best for you hamster Flowers

I'm concerned because Nanna Knitting Frenzy has started. Between them, DM and MIL have knitted 3 cardigans in a fortnight. At this rate, the baby will have 27 cardigans before she is even born Hmm

HopefulHamster · 06/02/2014 18:35

Congrats Christine!

I went the hospital but they only did a blood test. Had a phone call at five to say my hcg was at 4652, which sounds great, but then I said 'what should I do next' and they said nothing, just wait for your early scan on the 17th! They will only do a second blood test if I keep on bleeding next week, and they had no interest in doing an earlier scan. So now I'm in limbo. I am still quite achey as well so not sure what to think about everything. Trying to google private blood tests, or thinking of persuading my GP to let me have one.

Hope everyone is well - sorry haven't had time to read back properly yet.

bakingtins · 06/02/2014 18:35

Congratulations Christine I'm sure she was worth the wait!

fod27 · 06/02/2014 18:35

Sorry well done christine!!! Sooo pleased for you! Awww a beautiful little girl xxx

Aoifebelle · 06/02/2014 19:06

Fod sorry can't help on the parenting. does he tend to struggle at school? Is it any particular subject there is an issue with?. Sounds like something has shifted.

Aoifebelle · 06/02/2014 19:08

Hi hopeful that sounds better. when I had Hcg tested they took 2 samples 24 hrs apart to check that levels were doubling.I found that pretty reassuring after a scan that couldn't really show if all was ok.

allisgood1 · 06/02/2014 19:33

COngrats Christine! And such a big baby--well done!!!

hopeful they really should have done another blood test. What in the hell was the point of doing just 1??? Hope things are more straightforward from here and the 17th brings good news.

Sorry I have been in hibernation. I feel suitably shit. Which is filling me with confidence, so thats one thing--no stress. Just over 9 weeks now so thinking I have only 3 weeks of shit feeling before I feel better (please let me live in my disillusion if thats what it is). 10 weeks when I started feeling better with DD2. I do have a nasty cold which is NOT helping! Back to the sofa...

ImMarmite · 06/02/2014 19:39

And so I'm here again for some hand holding, tear wiping & general support...

I'm 15 weeks today & I'm getting in a mess...not felt baby move for about 2 weeks, feeling sh!t but not pregnant sh!t, bump seems no bigger, & our 16 week scan seems miles away.... I can't face another mc

squizita · 06/02/2014 19:54

Hopeful That does sound a healthy amount, but maybe ask your GP for a follow up to check levels are rising?

Fod maybe ring the teacher whose homework he missed, see if he's fallen behind or if it's a one off. As he's lovely and studious it may be as simple as he's got behind and 'buried his head in the sand' - I'm a HoY at a secondary and have to deal with this kind of thing from time to time. Kids who aren't used to getting in trouble forget their work and then do something which worries mum and teachers much more (e.g. lying, skipping class) because they're worried/upset.

allis week 10 you say... eyes up food which is not babybel or crisps fx it does get better then! :)

Marmite I'm pretty sure reading up everything in my paranoid way I've read on pg guides and here on MN that movement won't be reliably felt until well after 17 weeks - and that some women don't feel it at all until 22 weeks. Could you ring the midwife, describe the situation and see what her take is? Sure that would be reassuring.

Pentagon · 06/02/2014 20:22

congratulations christine, you did so well! and what a great weight! Enjoy your newborn cuddles

kjh it sounds like bringing your maternity leave forward is the right thing to do - the night shifts must be extremely tiring!

saggy hugs for Saturday

fod I don't know what's the best way to deal with teenagers (in fact, I dread to think what I'll do when the time comes) - I guess it'd be better not to lose your temper, not to lecture him and I suggest asking him if there's something that he wants to talk about and if there's anything you can do. saggy and anyone else (is there anyone else?) who has teenagers will probably be able to give you some better advice. Good luck, I can imagine how concerned you are...

hamster I have my fingers crossed for you

marmite I'm sure everything will go well

penguin my mum loves knitting - we have so many cardigans!! A couple have been worn quite a lot, the rest once or twice...Maybe they can knit some blankets?

pixie I know what you mean about not being mentally prepared! I was convinced Elsie would be late so when she was born, 5 days before my due date, I was so no ready for it!

Pixielady83 · 06/02/2014 20:27

fod sorry no idea I'm afraid, maybe ask him if there's anything bothering him at school? does he normally chat to you about stuff? hope there's nothing badly amiss and he is ok.

hopeful I'm not sure what hcg levels mean, sorry you're still in limbo though Sad I hope you have answers soon.

marmite I know some people don't recommend them but I found my angel sounds a godsend for settling my anxiety between 12 and 20wk scan. I felt movement much later in this pregnancy than in my first so I needed some reassurance as was quite panicky. As others have said completely normal not to feel baby or only from time to time at 15wks. It was well past 20wks this time when a pattern of movements developed.

penguin the knitting, the knitting! my Nan pulls out her 1980s knitwear book everytime I visit and tries to persuade me to let her knit things with ducks on Hmm goodness knows what she will produce for a boy. Our dolls are now quite warmly dressed and I have discovered lovely big blankets are a top way to keep knitting fingers occupied (and away from sailor style jumpers, ducks etc!) Doesn't help that everything anyone in the family knits always comes up a size too small on DD, and yet they persist...!

GuffSmuggler · 06/02/2014 20:38

Woo hoo, fantastic news christine!!! WELL DONE YOU Grin Very jealous of the newborn cuddles you are getting right now.

pixie I don't feel mentally ready either which is ridiculous considering what we've all been through here. I just keep thinking, no I need a few more weeks to prepare myself for everything!!!

Aoifebelle · 06/02/2014 20:59

marmite never gotten that far, so am no expert, but is it possible what you felt before wasn't the baby moving. 13 weeks does seem quite early.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 06/02/2014 21:16

Fod im not sure what to suggest really. I've just rolled with stuff really! Confused
I'd say you need to investigate exactly where he is at in terms of work and keeping up and then 'encourage' him to put the effort in. The one thing which did always get my DS moving was threatening to remove his electronic gadgets.

put im crap at teenagers! its why I'm going back to the start! I can do tiny tots and toddlers! Grin

LondonJen · 06/02/2014 21:17

Just a quick stop in to say congrats on your bundle of job Christine! I bow before your no pian relief. So impressive!

Hopeful I sorry to hear you've had some bleeding but I am glad to hear you have had some investigations and I hope you get more answers soon if you can. Glad it has stopped that's good. Thinking of you.

Sorry marmite I don't know about being that far along I hope you find answers soon.

fod27 · 06/02/2014 22:04

aoife he's always hated school but he's academically intelligent (his predicted grades are 6c - the top grade) I've taken his phone, xbox, kindle the lot but I'm not sure what else to do I'm getting more concerned as when LO arrives I'll have less time to focus on him and I'm worried for his future
squiz I've contacted the school - for the 5th time and lost the plot a little, we have received progress reports in the post where it was highlighted that there was some issues in a couple of classes so I contacted his HoY to discuss - they never returned my calls, we had another report with similar issues but that time it was in a different class so again I contacted the school and still no reply, then u couldn't attend a parents evening due to my SPD, I informed the school but requested feedback in writing so that I could support the school etc .... Guess what?? Nothing! My concerns are the lack of communication, I'm a lecturer in FE and there are safeguarding procedures that must be followed and when my son didn't return on time today from school I assumed the worse and got very upset - luckily my husband was on hand to deal with it. We have since found the online access to his timetable and Hwk etc

Thanks pentagon it's sooo hard when you can see their potential and they seem to be willingly throwing it all away, he's seen me out myself through college and Uni ( I was a teenage mum) so he knows how high I regard education and that I wouldn't be where I am without it, my DD is the complete opposite and strives to excell in every aspect of her life (although I think that stems from pyscological issues that she has with her father and a desire to be loved)

pixie he's always been a incredibly quiet child - teachers actually calked me into school over it - it's just his personality but I've staggered bedtimes etc to give us some one to one time, he has become more talkative recently but he's also become cheeky with it

Thanks saggy I'm at that "where did I go wrong " stage. I'm hoping it's a phase

NerdyBird · 06/02/2014 22:26

marmite I've had similar worries. I had my 16 week appointment on tuesday. Was half convinced it would all be over, but baby's heartbeat was there and going strong. Unless you've had DC already it may not be movement you've felt. The MW said movement is more likely nearer 20 weeks for first timers. I've felt some funny sensations but I think it's wind.

Am trying to keep believing things will be ok.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 06/02/2014 22:39

Fod in the most supportive way possible, it gets harder from here on in. Sad
They get opinions and a voice and they get bigger than you.
In regards to the school, follow the chain. Speak to the teachers, follow up in writing. If they don't help go up the chain. Speak and write to HoY, then Headmaster. If that fails, which it shouldn't because if you write to the head they are obliged to write back, then go to the LEA and the governors. Keep at it until someone answers you.
Teenagers are very hard sometimes. They take a whole different plan than little ones.

ChristineDaae · 06/02/2014 23:06

Thanks for the messages all, the no pain relief was an accident, I was trying to leave it as late as possible, feel a bit stupid that I had no idea how much things had progressed!Blush
Fod - if he's quite intelligent could it be boredom? In school I stopped doing homework and stuff, just coz I knew I was predicted top grades in exams, and any homework that wasn't coursework I viewed as optional. Could it be boredom/a little too much confidence?
