I hope no-one thinks this thread is too 'exclusive' or 'cliquey', but I can no longer join in with the weight loss thread, so I thought I would start this one up!

I wish I had had the benefit of the internet (and especially Mumsnet, of course!) first time around and felt pretty isolated after ds was born, so it's good to have some 'virtual' friends in the same boat now I'm expecting no 2.

It would be interesting as well to find out just how many of us are pregnant, there must be loads of us! and just to have a general chinwag.

Joe1 - yes! toast and marmite actually, a lethal combination. Anything I throw up I then can't eat in the future...so the list of foods is dwindling...

tigermoth · 12/03/2002 11:55

Joe, just to remind you it's nearly lunchtime! you probably know already.

When first pregnant, I continually chewed gum to ward off sickness. It really did help. However, the gum used to get wrapped around the toast (yes, me too!) when I was too lazy to take it out of my mouth before having a bite. Not nice.

Joe1 · 12/03/2002 12:02

Yep thanks Tigermoth I had just looked at the clock on the pc and was just thinking the same thing.

Dixie · 13/03/2002 15:22

Well, for the last 3 days I've been throwing up constantly, I can't hold anything down - not even liquids. Went to the doctors yesterday he says it's probably not pregnancy related as I'm 24 weeks now but it is awful & they've found Ketones(?) in my urine....so they've given me some stuff to stop me being sick. Thought it was working but had my 12 o'clock dosage & then threw all that up about 5mins later!? I don't even feel hungry but know I need to eat for the baby's sake so I do try but it is just wasted....

I thought reading all the lovely things you lot are talking about may have helped my appeittie (sorry no good at spelling!) but I'm just sipping soft drinks to keep my sugar levels up (diabetes!). I feel so awful not eating though, do you think baby will be ok?

Joe1, my bump took awhile to appear toobut as someone else said, i remember reading it only being size of a prawn to begin with. My bump was very prominent at about 18 weeks.

Finally...who is next in line to give birth....JASPER has finally popped!! I'm due in June?

ScummyMummy · 13/03/2002 15:39

Oh Dixie, poor you. I'm sure that wee one inside you will be just fine- apparently your body prioritises the baby and it'll nick all the nutrients going -at your expense! Hope you feel better soon.

mollipops · 14/03/2002 03:01

Dixie, the ketones mean you are dehydrated. Understandable since you are not keeping anything down! Do you think you might have a tummy bug? Otherwise it could very well still be morning sickness...have you tried a re-hydrating powder from the pharmacy? You mix them with water and they are wonderful, and you can just sip it thru the day, it has the right balance of salts and sugars. Stay away from cordial and soft drink! Apart from that just try to nibble thru the day, graze! Dried fruit and nuts are good...crackers (not the salty kind)...boiled potato. Baby will be fine, they are amazing! You worry about looking after yourself and nature will look after the baby! Keep your chin up and get some rest! All the best, m

Dixie · 14/03/2002 08:49

Thanks mollipops, I was wondering what they meant, Hubby went to get me some sachet things last night but they only had blackcurrant flavour (something I can't stomach at the best of times). Still being ill, trying to get another doctor appointment for today, it's so confusing what to do with the diabetes on top of it all as well. Still got to take insulin but then keep sugar intake so don't go into a hypo...blah blah...3 months to go. I'm really hating this pregnancy (feel really guilty about that but it's been absolutely awful, but deep down I know the baby will be worth it all). I just hope I don't resent it when it arrives for making my life so horrid right now...goodness that must sound bad but you know what I mean (I hope).

Joe1 · 14/03/2002 10:46

Dixie, horrible, Ive hated throwing up approx once a day. Are you able to drink flat coke, apparently they give this to children in hospital when they are poorly as it has everything in it. I cant remember who told me this, nurse or somebody like that.
Im still hungry all the time. I think my bump is starting to grow, with ds Im sure I had one straight away. Off to see the midwife today at lunch time of all times, how will I get through, will have to have a snack before I go. Going to get my iron tablets, had to have them with ds, as I am so knackered all the time so hoping that is the problem this time.

Enid · 14/03/2002 11:00

Joe1, have discovered Tesco's Organic Cola - its marvellous, has no caffeine but a lovely spicy cola taste and is really helping to settle my tum. Having a very bad couple of days, literally can't get out of bed now without barfing copiously. Keep telling myself its all a good sign but feel awful...

Joe1 · 14/03/2002 11:20

Enid, I will get some, I really wanted coke yesterday but could only get hold of some diet coke which Im not too keen but couldnt stop drinking it and I must admit it settled my tummy for the night enough to enable me to have a dinner and pineapple fritters.

sml · 14/03/2002 17:15

I thoroughly recommend Tescos Organic Cola, it has ginger in I think, so must be good for settling the tum. Plus, despite being organic, it's only 37p a tin - cheaper than coke!

Enid · 14/03/2002 18:49

Its been so successful in making me feel better that I went back today and bought 6 more cans. Its got ginger and nutmeg in it. I've been sipping it slowly through the day and tonight I've felt so much better I've actually made dp a curry - frying onions and all! I suppose the real test will be if I can eat any myself...

Fentimans also make something similar called Curiosity Cola which is even more delicious but unfortunately 99p a bottle.

speaky · 15/03/2002 18:37

Hello. My name is Maria, and I am 9weeks pregnant. I have read some of your mails about sickness. basically how much longer does it usually go on for??? I have tried ginger products and its left me bloated and still feeling sick. i find that I come home from work and get straight into bed. I wont my life back...LOL

Joe1 · 16/03/2002 07:45

Welcome speaky. Poor you we know how you feel. Its been trial and error as to what I can eat but at 14 weeks Im still feeling and being sick so who knows when it will stop, but I think for most it is around 12 weeks. I go to bed around 8-9pm because I feel sick and feel so tired but Im hoping I will have more energy in the coming weeks. When I tried Ginger ale, just a sip now and again, it made me sick so I havnt touched any ginger since. I find cornflakes, french toast, toasted sandwiches, fruit, chips, potatoes, any carbohydrate really has been my best foods at the moment. Sorry I cant make it disappear but you can at least chat to us

mollipops · 16/03/2002 13:16

Hi speaky! Welcome and congratulations! The good news is that morning sickness usually subsides by around 12-14 weeks...the bad news is it doesn't always! But think positive - chances are you'll be feeling much better soon! In the meantime, try to keep nibbling what you can handle, if you get too empty it will make things worse (as I found out with pg number 1!) Snack on small amounts often, rather than trying to eat "meals" as such. Avoid anything that sets you off (I couldn't even stand to open the pantry door - dh couldn't understand it!) Have you tried any herbal tea? Twinings make some really nice ones, Lemon Ginger would be perfect if you like it, if not chamomile or lemon tea are settling too. Buy a small packet first just in case!

I don't think flat soft drink is recommended if you are dehydrated, but I'm glad to hear it has helped some of you to drink the cola - with ginger and nutmeg, sounds amazing, shame they don't sell it here!

Enid · 16/03/2002 13:54

I started taking B6 last week as I had read somewhere that it was good for morning sickness - seems to have subsided SLIGHTLY. Yesterday I had a migraine though which was the icing on the cake!! Have had two since I've been pregnant, before that hadn't had one for about 10 years. Hmmmm. AND dd completely LOST her shoes (how do these things happen???!!!) so I had to go shoe shopping, with a 2 year old, with a migraine and morning sickness. I deserve a b**y medal I can tell you. Ended up buying the most expensive kids shoes I have EVER seen, simply because I was so untogether I didn't check the price, then was too embarrassed/couldn't be bothered to say anything at the till...

Rhubarb · 18/03/2002 11:46

Ginger Beer! Make sure it's the fizzy stuff, that helps for some reason. I used to have a glass of it handy every day, and I would take intermittent sips of it, it did help keep it at bay. My sickness got worse in the evenings, and I couldn't stand that 'fresh bread smell' in the supermarkets!

Joe1 · 18/03/2002 12:01

Enid (thats a medal by the way).

Rhubarb I cant stand shopping either and rush around as quickly as I can before Im sick. Im now 15 weeks (I was a week behind until midwife put me right) and still being sick. All I seem to do right now is eat and sleep, Im looking forward to getting some energy back. I should have my scan next week (we only have a 16wk one
) so Im looking forward to that.

Enid mumsnet thought you deserved two.

kid · 18/03/2002 14:15

I am 36 weeks pregnant and am booked in for a c-section in 16 days ( and counting down!)
I have suffered with terrible heartburn with this pregnancy (number 2) and the doctor has only just prescribed me with something for it, better late than never I suppose!

Joe1 · 18/03/2002 14:34

Not long to go then Kid, make sure you keep us informed.

By the way I forgot to mention I have suddenly got a bump, I used to be able to do my trousers up now I cant. It seemed to appear overnight. Oh no all that food has caught up with me.

Enid · 18/03/2002 15:57

then when I got home dd proudly showed me where she had put her old shoes - in the big flower vase on the windowsill! Now why didn't I look in there??!!

MalmoMum · 18/03/2002 22:29

What do you do with your existing children when you have a midwife appointment? I'm midway now so have more frequent appointments coming up and don't want to use up all goodwill babysitting before the new baby arrives.
