Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Agreeing with the others that Ondansetron is definitely the way to go. I am still on 8mg a day and it is (IMO) the only thing keeping me on my feet. Without it I would still be vomiting profusely and unable to eat for days on end.

So tired.. have had a very stressful work day, more stressful than I need. Hoping to go to bed early but waiting up to skype my best friend in Australia who is 19 weeks and not a HG sufferer. (bitch. I love her, but bitch. lol)

Sally8655 · 01/10/2013 22:48

Welcome to the new ladies but very sorry your here x

Lucinda, pleased your back with words of wisdom xx
It's not just the meat counter smell, it's as soon as I walk in the door of any supermarket. They just all smell like my fridge. Yuk!
Totes, glad your having a bit improvement.
Jen, I too am waiting up to talk to dh in aus. These time differences are a nightmare.

I'm not too good today. I think I've just been overdoing it, had to make 2 trips to b&q today. My ME is flaring up and I've got mega flu symptoms that came on suddenly this morning. Sore throat, bad head, aching bones and cough, all on top of feeling like I'm going to puke any moment.

Does anybody know if I'm allowed throat sweets like soothers or halls? The honey and Lemon just isn't cutting it :-(

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 02/10/2013 03:44

Sally I need to know the same thing! Am up now as can't sleep for coughing. Lots of bugs going around I think. I hope you feel better soon.

Inneed, I hope thursday goes well. Guess that at least it's soon.

Slept welllast night for once, no throwing up, feel a bit better so far today for it.

Misspope quite a few people have used Ondansetron and swear by it, except for the constipation

ChocChaffinch · 02/10/2013 11:31

I'd be dead without my ondansatron Grin

and accompanying lactulose

Sally8655 · 02/10/2013 12:51

Thanks choc xx

misspope24 · 02/10/2013 14:05

It is very good, no sickness since taking it but still got nausea sadly- nothing seems to budge that !!

misspope24 · 02/10/2013 15:07

Does anyone get the following symptoms on ondansetron
?
Headaches?
'Sicky' burps and hiccups?

LucindaE · 02/10/2013 16:27

MissPope and SicknSpan I think people mention novicol (sp?)as something effective GP's can recommend, if the suppositories available from Boots (with the absurd rule that you can't tell them you are pregnant) don't work; MOH's wonderful website, which someone else mentioned a few posts ago, was it Meerka ? - it's so easy to miss posts/suggestions on here, this thread moves along quickly these days - does have a load of stuff on safety of meds, etc. Ondansetron as 'Zofran' is the first drug used in the US, I remember from an old thread.
I think that awful burping is common anyway, and vicious headaches, especially as a sign of hormonal changes or dehydration, too, but sadly some people do say that Ondansetron makes the headaches worse. That is awful.
MrsChuong I'm so glad Ondansetron has helped.
Sally Thank you from mother hen! I so agree about the awful smell of supermarkets, and fridges (and my OH smelt of roast pork to me! I would lie in bed with a lavender satchet to my nose). Is Australia twelve hours ahead or behind? I never remember...
Champagne I am so glad you have reached these milestones, back at work, halfway through, and not puking very much!
Choc This message was legible this time. Brave you, fibregel! [green]
InNeed I am so sorry about practical difficulties as well as trauma to cope with.
Eggy I so agree about the bravery on here!
How do the people doing teaching manage? I know I wouldn't be able to control a classroom not feeling sick.
Jen Is the relapse an better?

I hope Everyone is coping today...
Lucinda
xx

Hey there. Lucinda, the relapse is slightly better, so long as I stay on the meds. I have been able to ease off the lactulose and things are moving by themselves, which is great. I have been in work this week (and it is a mental week).

I am much better than I was, but I am still very tired. Wearing my maternity trousers and they are so comfortable! It makes all the difference. Now we know we're having a boy, there seems to be so much to do!

eggybrokenoff · 02/10/2013 17:53

hi ladies. so i got my ondansetron today - one a day to start with which doesnt seem a lot but we'll see how it goes. hoping having it as soon as i wake will help through morning hell of making breakfast, packed lunch and doing school run (dh starts work in early hours so im on mt own in mornings). midwife rang today for booking in appt - made it seem real but also made me worry more that something might go wrong.

eggybrokenoff · 02/10/2013 19:11

how does everyone find dehydration affects sickness? i am only really nauseous at the moment but i have noticed that i am struggling to take on enough fluid because drinking makes me feel sick - and then being dehydrated makes ne feel worse and so the spiral begins. i am really really trying not to get dehydrated but it is really hard when i can only sip tiny amounts at a time

Meerka · 02/10/2013 19:25

I find it hard too, cause my saliva glands have gone into stellar overproduction. I barely wee, but spit all the time (so disgusting :( ) and am always thirsty.

People say really hot or really cold drinks can be better. taking small sips, like you say. Water seems to be bad, maybe flat coke can be better. If you -do- suddenly fancy something, try it right then and there, if you can.

Ketostix are great for checking if you are actualy dehydrated or not. can get them from amazon or maybe the chemist.

dehydrations more than weight loss is a real danger, so if you think you are dehydrated, go to the doctor's.

Oddly, I find that if I have a totally empty stomach, then I feel sicker too. Though getting anything to stay down after managing to choke it down is kind of hard. HGpregnancy, the diet you really don't want to try.

eggybrokenoff · 02/10/2013 19:28

it is a terrible diet. but if it is any consolation to anyone my body looked amazing after i gave birth to ds1! lost two dress sizes, and walked out of hospital in pre-pregnancy jeans falling off me. that with huge boobs i have never looked better! (crap skin and hair though and piled it back on in a fortnight with bfeeding and the novelty of being able to eat!).
i wouldnt recommend it though

MurderOfBanshees · 02/10/2013 19:32

Dehydration definitely makes the nausea worse, unfortunately it becomes a vicious circle in that nausea makes it harder to drink. Try anything you can to get fluids, whether it's sips (I find using a straw makes it easier), ice lollies, jelly, whatever.

Worth getting ketostix as well so you can keep an eye on how dehydrated you are. If you are really struggling to drink then it may actually do you good to get admitted and rehydrated by drip.

It is really hard :(

Totesamazeballs · 02/10/2013 19:39

I am struggling with dehydration too. I pee about twice/ three times a day if lucky and it's always dark. I just find eating easier than drinking. All I can take at the moment is fizzy water in small sips. At he beginning it was just ice lollies...have you tried lemonade? Or R Whites lollies? Or watered down still/ real lemonade?

Slight increase of stress in my life - DH got to find a new contract for next month. I was planning on buying a few bits for the house but all spending gong on hold until he gets a job!

Meerka · 02/10/2013 19:39

murderofbanshees? are you related to murderofgoths? :)

MurderOfBanshees · 02/10/2013 19:46

Haha oops, forgot about that, it's my Hallowe'en namechange Grin

eggybrokenoff · 02/10/2013 19:47

lemonade is all i can drink really but worried about amount of sugar - fizzy water a good idea if i can find one without that funny metallic after taste

MurderOfBanshees · 02/10/2013 19:48

I was told sugar is actually quite useful in pregnancy, especially with HG. You'll be lacking glucose and the baby benefits from it
