Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

thank u ladies. will wait for consultant to ring and chat thru. i am booked in for 32 weeks as they can carry out a fetal renal scan on baby then. in the mean time a consultant will review the scan and call me
it might mean a small op for baby when he is here or just some scans. who knows.
just another shit pregnancy complication for me to deal with!

Sally8655 · 30/09/2013 22:17

Bless you fee, hoping all is ok. I was in a thread about the possible markers and outcomes of the anomoly scan just before mine as I was so scared. Most of the comments were reassuring as the marks turned out to be not much of an issue by the time baby was born as they corrected themselves. I just googled it if you want to check it out.
I hope all goes ok for you at your next appointment. Sending cyber hugs xx

MOG, I ran out a number of times due to pharmacies not stocking ondansetron. Hope you get them ok tomorrow xx

jenpatnim · 30/09/2013 22:32

Fee that is so scary, I hope everything turns out to be ok. I was so nervous going in for mine this morning, I can't imagine how that must have been for you. Fingers and everything crossed for you. XX

Mummychuong · 30/09/2013 22:54

Hi feekerry I'm 27 weeks 2 mo and wen I went for my 20 week scan same thing happened to me I got sent to the royal hospital in Belfast to c a specialist she diagnosed a blocked kidney r kidney reflux won't know till baby's born an can be scanned they sayed both is very common and baby might grow out of it herself as she gets bigger fingers crossed try not 2 worry easier sayed than done but after hg I think wee deserve a break ??

jenpatnim · 30/09/2013 23:02

Mummychuong I'm in Belfast, booked in to the Royal!

Meerka · 01/10/2013 09:22

oh dear Fee, I hope it sorts itself out as fast as it can for the baby

LucindaE · 01/10/2013 10:56

OK, Mother Hen is back. BT took five days to get me back a telephone line!. Just glanced at last posts, will read through today to see how everyone is doing, I am sure that you have been supporting each other wonderfully. Welcome to new people, sorry you have to join the thread nobody wants to need, but everyone is lovely and supportive here.
Feekerry I did see your awful worries, you poor thing, hugs. I do so hope if it is anything it can be cleared up with some treatment easily enough - after suffering tow Hyperemesis pregnancies, you don't need this sort of worry.
Back soon. My goodness, the thread has moved on.

10 weeks, been battling hyperemisis for 5 and today I'm beyond fed up, considering ending the pregnancy as I feel awful. I'm taking ondansetron which Is making me constipated meaning feeling worse. Supposed to be back at work tomorrow but highly unlikely. I just want to have 1 days break from this :'(((

mummy thank you for that info. that sounds really similar. has put my mind at rest. i suppose my biggest worry is that baby is taken away at birth for checks or something. just want to have my baby and go home! not have to stay in hospital for scans etc.
suppose its good for hospital to prepare in advance tho. you are right it does seem quite common and lots seem to rectify by 32 weeks. hope your girls does!

thank you everyone else.... just another reason on top of hg why i am NEVER doing this again x

SicknSpan · 01/10/2013 13:47

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear.

Ladies of the sick bag, I'm terrified. Have just found out I am expecting dc3 (2 boys already 5 and 9), both previous pregnancies were utterly horrific with HG from weeks 5-37 and 5-38. In hospital for long periods on a drip, multiple times (I think 6 times with ds1 and 8 with ds2) of up to 10 days at a time because none of the drugs worked and my liver got deranged (as in function, not temperament. it was not a mad liver just an malfunctioning one.)

I'm only just 5 weeks today, +ve test yesterday, what do I do? What actions can I possibly take to try and reduce the impact or likelihood? I used to be really active on the HG threads here back in the day but since the baby days are long behind us (or so we thought- this PG is totally unplanned and the result of a catastrophic failure of the 99.9999999% successful copper coil) I have mentally erased any knowledge of HG or how to handle it. I just didn't think I needed that information any more.

Help. What are my options?

kalidasa · 01/10/2013 14:42

Lurking on here and a bit scared of sicknspan's post as I also have a copper coil. Have you had an early scan? I think you are meant to if you get pregnant with a coil as there's a slightly higher chance of an ectopic, and also they might need to check where the coil is.

There's loads of info on the pregnancy sickness website (linked at the top) about preemptive meds. With your history you should definitely start medicating now - there's some evidence you can avoid the worst this way. If I have another one I will definitely start the drugs immediately (I was also first hospitalised at five weeks, and had multiple admissions though mercifully avoided any liver probs).

Are you feeling sick already? Maybe there's a tiny chance that it won't be as bad? Perhaps if it's a girl . . .

kalidasa · 01/10/2013 14:44

Forgot to say - sicknspan I don't know if ondansetron was available for you last time but if not it does make a big difference to a lot of women. With your history you should push for it early on I'd say. It actually didn't stop me throwing up but I think that's unusual, and at the absolute maximum dose it did (just) keep me out of hospital.

Meerka · 01/10/2013 15:03

hiya

have a read of these: cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenariorecommendation:3

first line is rest, rest and eat what you can, small amounts of whatever you fancy. that helps (getting tired makes it all much worse) but it sure as hell is hot doesnt do enough

second line is. from the NICE guidelines which ALL medical people are supposed to follow:

Consider drug treatment with an anti-emetic if initial treatments such as dietary advice or rest have failed and the woman has persistent symptoms.

Early treatment with an anti-emetic is likely to be more effective and is essential to improve the woman's quality of life, symptoms, and reduce morbidity to the fetus.

Thirdly, these people are super: www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/ Do ring them (answerphone, but they will ring back) and ask them for support. they are really good. number is 024 7638 2020. Very experienced doctor in HG.

sorry I cant add more, typing brings on mroe vomitting, god knows why.

Best of luck!!

Wlecome back Mother Hen!

jenpatnim · 01/10/2013 18:06

Oh so sorry to the new people! I am 20wks now and I can tell you that at this stage it is much more manageable than it was in the first trimester. The meds do help and if you have constipation, your dr can give you lactulose to help move things along. To those of you who are planning to hang in there, you can do it. To those who can't go through this again, only hugs and understanding. xx

eggybrokenoff · 01/10/2013 19:20

oh everyone is going through so much. sicknspan what a huge shock for you.
i have decided to take meds early - i am 6 weeks now and think i was sicker than this at this stage before but cant really remember. i was fearful i had a bug as ds2 was up vomiting all night but he is fine now and i am nauseous all the time im awake. so i figure if i do have hg i need the meds and if the pregnancy is not 'for real' it wont hurt

LucindaE · 01/10/2013 20:00

Welcome, Sicknspan and MissPope and Eggybrokenoff. Sorry you are suffering again.I can't better others' advice about pre emptive meds and will say my normal do get some kesostix in suggestion. MissPope A lot of people find those jelly suppositories good, were they no good for you? Sicknspan I love your sense of humour!
Meerka I do feel for you, its awful the Netherlands, in some ways so enlightened compared to the UK, is behind on treatment of this.
Jen I hope it is a hormonal surge making you feel iller. Crocheting?
With Sally doing weaving? You skillful lot...Sally Meat counter? [green]. When I last contacted Tallyra she was very ill, I don't like to keep pestering her with pm's, but I hope she is holding on.
Champagne It is certainly a strange thing to be most ill on Sundays.
Totes Oddly enough, I read somewhere of the horrors of foaming smoothies being like somehthing from Hallowen. Oh dear.
MommyChuong and Feekerry That is a great piece of reassurance from MummyChuong, it doesn't sound as if they were sufficiently reassuring at your scan, Feekerry about the chances of its going naturally.
INeed Thinking of you.
Jellyandcake Never worry about tmi on here, no such thing. Relentless nausea is very hard to bear, and as MOG Totes and others say, the difficulty of trying to run a household. I really feel for those with LO's, it must be so hard, but they will have a companion for life and this will be forgotten, from all I've learned on this and another thread.
Kali Great advice as ever. Hope baby Joseph is fine and of course, you are too.
choc I've done it again, I've scrawled a message for you and can't read it.
My apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Hi all, so sorry people are feeling so rubbish at the moment, but especially sicknspan, the shock in your situation must be horrible.

Thanks jenpatnim.

I have my appointment on Thursday. Bit of a disaster booking it as they can't tell you over the phone what appointments are available before you chose what option you'd like to have, so there was a bit of cancelling and juggling around. I didn't want to do the tablet but it was a wait of nearly 3 weeks to get the surgical option, and I started throwing up yesterday so that was my decision made for me, really.

It's a logistical nightmare as it means we getting a coach at 7am to another town, then hanging around all day (literally all, its a 6 hour wait!). It's an effort to get back to our home town so I've just booked a cheap hotel room and will chill out there all day until the second appointment. DP has to stay at home to sort DD out, then thankfully my mum is coming to stay Thursday night in case I have a terrible night and need help with DD on Friday. This means DP may as well go on his night shift on Thursday night - new job so I'd rather he did than cause any issues - but still... aargh, I so wish I could have it done in the clinic in the next town!

I feel awful because I'm 34 years old and still have had to call my parents and ask them for help in this situation. It makes me feel like a 17 year old who got pregnant on a drunken one night stand Blush

My biggest, deepest respect to everyone who is choosing to go through this again. I'm scared now that I might never have another child. I'm in awe of those of you doing this right now x

ChocChaffinch · 01/10/2013 20:33

Hi MissPope and SickandSpan

so sorry you have HG to contend with

Miss Pope have you been to doctor re constipation? I need so much fibogel (sp?) it's not funny. ondansetron completely stops normal bowel movement.
loathe being constipated. so miserable coupled with nausea.
Oh SicknSpan - on the bright side... you know what to expect, so being forewarned is being forearmed.... def take early meds and fight for ondansetron, mine had to be consultant prescribed so I could only have it after being admitted; so you may get to go in and be waited on hand and foot at least once Grin
also your 2 older kids will be able to help so much, mine are 7 and 5 and I'm imagining lots of them fetching stuff from upstairs, keeping their own rooms tidy, little things..

eggybrokenoff · 01/10/2013 20:37

just been reading back a little bit over this thread. what hugely brave women are here. good luck for all of you whatever decisions you are making and whatever you are going through x

Totesamazeballs · 01/10/2013 20:47

Hi all.

Sorry to see new faces but hello!!

Fee - really sorry you had a worrying scan. Fingers crossed that it's not a major issue and one that resolves itself before birth.

Misspope we have all had days feeling like that. Hang in there and moan as much as you like on this thread.

Egg and Sickn - hope the meds kick in quickly for you both.

Day two of coping on my own in the day and got through a toddler group without having to suck sweets for dear life. Think I am better than I was last week.

misspope24 · 01/10/2013 21:08

I have syrup of figs in the hope it'll start regularity.
Has anyone used ondansetron on here? My doctors did scare me a little about using it, but my gp assured me she used it and doctors warned me off due to it being so expensive.
Hanging on in there, I'm 10 weeks ahead now, whereas if I gave in I'd be back at day 1!

Mummychuong · 01/10/2013 21:13
