No reason really just wondering.

37+3 with first he's due 12 days before my 22nd bday. Always thought I would have one around this age. Only person nervous to tell s my dad but he was over the moon! DPs dads reaction didn't cross my mind but he went silent on phone (lives away) hung up, called back ten mins later Xmas day might I add. And said oh sorry you caught me by surprise I um don't think I'm ready to be a grandad! He will be 55 my dad will turn 45 6 day before due date.

So how old were you when you had your first? And any others while we're at it :)

I'll still be 31 when this one, the first, makes its entrance.

There's always the possibility that grandparents will have unexpected reactions to the arrival of the next generation - for one thing it triggers a lot of feeling in them (and other relations) concerning ageing, their goals, their own upbringing etc.

My mother is mental problematic, and without even knowing that we have conceived (I'm not 3 months yet) has already started telling my brother she's worried about 'hatred' being passed down through her to me and into the next generation Hmm because she had a poor relationship with her own mother, and I don't have a close one with her.

When I tell my dad I'm pretty sure he'll start talking about fishing. He doesn't deal well with emotional surprises Smile

So, strange things may happen. But people get used to things very quickly, and gonnabmummy I'm sure they'll soon forget they had any worries about being 'too old' when they're cuddling a new baby Smile

boldlittlebird · 11/08/2013 16:26

Sorry, that last sentence should have said 'too young'. Duh.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 11/08/2013 16:28

Mid 20s. I would have to work it out on my fingers to give you the exact age (how weird is that? Who can't remember something like how old they were when their first child was born)

My parents were teenagers when they had me.

I'll be 35 when DC 1 arrives in a few weeks. It took me until nearly 30 to meet the man I wanted to have kids with. Luckily no fertility issues as it happened a month after TTC.

I have a v established career now, a healthy salary and a lovely house. Pretty good really. :)

  1. I think I might have been better off waiting until more my 30s to be honest. It's not a huge deal but looking at my sil who had hers at almost 40 (there are 10 years between her son and mine) I think the extra years are giving her the edge, parenting-wise.

Having said that I have friends now who are becoming (very young) grandparents and were (very young) parents themselves. They seem to have done a good job and I'm a bit Envy about them having lovely grandchildren to spoil, but it seems a shame to have children when you're barely out of childhood yourself.

Swings and roundabouts, innit.

Had first at 23. Is a great way to do things as you have a chance for lots of children if you want, and you have time to space them out so you can carry on with your career. You also often end up with a lot more support as the gps are young. Good luck.

Gonnabmummy · 11/08/2013 18:10

I'm seeing my break from work now as a chance to make something better of myself I'm really looking forward to it :) I stupidly left home really young, ended up leaving college to work and although I've been in reasonably well paid full time work I want more. I've been looking at courses etc and can't wait to better myself :)
I think having kids is totally dependent on the couple and there lifestyles like I said a lot of people from my school year have 4 yo also I know a few of them that go out on thurs/fri/sat and sun every week, both ok just not my cup of tea. I've always been quite sensible and down to earth and this was right for us :)

So glad other people have had similar reactions, I suppose the title that comes with it would make them feel older. It's just the stereotype of being worried to tell my dad as I was his little girl first born too but he was fine about it. Never thought anyone else would be taken a back. His mum was shocked but happy shocked and cried :)
